By the way, Best Car Magazine also says that this 2.0L turbo 4 engine can be tuned upwards of 600 ps (metric hp) for track use, and that the application for MR2 should have at least 400 ps. So despite the small displacement, it produces power similar to a V-8 engine.

So long as the Celica and MR2 are purely Toyota in engineering, design and manufacturing, I think that they will have significantly better positioning from the get go than the current rebadged Subaru and BMW cars sold as Toyotas now. David, from an engineering perspective, how would Toyota go about adding AWD to a mid-engined transverse engine? The transaxle would be to the rear of the engine, so it seems the driveshaft would have to go through the oil pan, but I don’t know that there’s clearance for that. I find the rumors of an AWD MR2 hard to believe. If it were hybrid, they could add electric motors up front, but I struggle with how they would do this from a purely mechanical perspective. I can’t think of any other non-hybrid AWD mid-engined car with a transverse engine.

Happy, it is not an EV, but - sry - AWD is for a small sporty car is a questionable decision, sport cars are RWD, everything else is mainly driving up the weight and cost.
Hope they find a solution for the snap oversteer problem that destroyed many of the MR2s.
I'm not convinced the layout mentioned is a good decision, makes a small car even more expensive than the BMW-Supra:; as I fear, an 80K-MR2 will diminish any chances for a new MR2 to become a successful product, sry...

Keep it simple, keep it light (under 3000 Lbs), 6 speed manual, Manual adjusting seats, limited electronics and gizmos, preferably rear seat room for two average sized adults, at least for short trips (unlike the GR86/BRZ twins), and Reliable! This CAN be done! And it would restore faith in Toyota fans (my 83 Celica was one of my favorite and most memorable cars, even though it needed more power). 🙏🙏🙏

If the MR2 does come out and is in the US it'll be great. Porsche has already said 2025 is the last year for the Cayman/Boxster as an ICE vehicle, so a mid-engine vehicle with similar power output as the GTS and GT4 models (not GT4RS) and AWD at a cheaper price would be great for enthusiasts looking for a replacement. Really looking forward to more news on the MR2 moving forward.

At US$40-50k, the Celica looks to be aimed at the Nissan Z, but lighter and AWD. Sounds good to me. I was planning to get a BRZ next year, but I might have to wait and save up a little more.

$70-80k for the MR2? The "affordable" and reliable mid-engine sports car? Yeah, no. AWD?! Unnecessary weight and will remove from the experience. There better be T-TOPS on that too. And pop up headlights, especially considering how EASY it would be to get around the so-called regulations. They need to sit down their designers, show them a SW20, and the tell the designers THAT is what the enthusiasts want. Do not let another Supra like mistake happen. That 4-cyl better put out some big numbers, AMG 4-cyl like numbers if they're charging $80k for a Toyota. And would it kill Toyota to put not just one, but multiple crazy cool wild colors on their sports cars? And finally... hopefully the car is produced to meet demand, no bottlenecks, and thus price is controlled at stealerships, and designed so someone over 6' tall can get in and out of it without smashing their head like with the Supra roof.

I'm happy the MR2 is coming back, but I was really hoping it would have the 2.5L 5th gen hybrid engine that the new Camry has. That would be a real hoot to drive. Just mash and go! No gears to get in the way. Just set up the corner, hang on for dear life, and gently power your way out of it. never having to let go of the steering wheel to grab a shifter. Super fun on a twisty road and could drive circles around the 2L turbo engine model with the 6 speed. And much more predictable power delivery than the turbo engine, especially important in a mid engine car. How do I know? I had a mid engine sports car and you can get yourself into trouble really quick if you power out of a corner too aggressively and do a complete spin around. I've done it. Also, I own an 8th gen Camry hybrid so I am very familiar with the 2.5L hybrid powertrain. And I also own a Mazda Miata NA, one of the most balanced fun to drive sports cars on the planet. Since I got the hybrid Camry, I've always wished that powertrain could be in a sports car because the power delivery is so smooth and powerful. If that engine was in a MR2, it would be an amazingly fun combination. Not only that, it would probably get around 60 mpg while planting many smiles per miles on your face. When Toyota finally comes out with the MR2 Hybrid, you will see what I mean. I just hope Toyota is smart enough to use the A25A 2.5L hybrid engine from the Camry, and no the 2.0L or the 1.8L hybrid powertrains from the Prius and Corolla. The 2.5L hybrid engine is the best hybrid engine Toyota has for power and efficiency bar none. If they had put that engine in the Corolla instead of the 1.8L hybrid, the Corolla could have got near 60 mpg and got to 60 mph in 6 seconds or less.

Bro, you're getting high on your own supply.
Your car's 208hp from a heavy engine would be a terrible match for a sportscar. The economy isn't that good either 44/47/46 for the upper Camry trims. You have a nice car and enjoy it that's great but people don't care about fuel economy in a sportscar that doesn't see too many miles anyway. What enthusiasts want is high power and light weight. That's why Toyota has developed this new 2.0T. They know what they are doing!

    • @escheidl
      @escheidl 21 день назад +1

@@bearclaw5115 I may be "high on my own supply," but it's because I know I'm right. The 2.5L A25A FXS naturally aspirated Hybrid powerplant would be perfect for a sports car. And the new 5th gen version of it even more so. As far as it being too heavy, remember it doesn't have the 6 speed transmission and turbo/intercooler that the 2.0T setup does. So I think weight would be similar. It would require a traction battery, but the Li-Ion battery pack in my Camry weighs 70 lbs. and could be placed between the front axle and passenger cell for a great weight distribution. And that would be a better weight distribution than the AWD setup that is currently being proposed because the weight is closer to center.
A turbo engine has no place in a mid engine sports car. If the boost comes on too strong while coming out of a corner the car will go flying into a spin. Very dangerous. The naturally aspirated 2.5L Hybrid powertrain has linear power delivery. Perfect for a mid engine sports car. Have you ever driven a go cart on a track? Go carts don't have gears that you have to row through. It's just mash and go. Great fun! The MR2 doesn't need AWD either. RWD in a sports car/go cart is a much more desirable setup. As far as fuel economy not mattering to "enthusiasts?" I am an enthusiast. But I can't afford a "special purpose" car that isn't practical for the "rest" of my life. I've owned my NA Miata for 31 years. I drove it over 200k miles commuting to work. I did that while I raised my family. I could do it because that was "my" car and it only carried "me" to work. It was great fun to get to and from work, put a big smile on my face, and was very cheap transportation. I had the family car for the family, which always happened to be a Camry, but the affordable commute car for work, which was my Miata. I'm retired now and still have it.
Regarding the fuel economy. The hybrid engine in my 2018 Camry LE is rated 51/52/53 mpg. Weight and wheels matter as this same engine in the 2018 XSE Camry is only rated 44/46/47. If this engine was in a lighter mid engine sports car it could easily achieve 57 mpg no problem. The 5th gen 2.5 hybrid engine puts out 225 hp, and I'm sure Toyota can massage more hp out of it as they do when the put this powerplant in different models. I can easily see 260 hp possible without too much effort.
Fuel mileage does matter to many of us. If Toyota were to make the MR2 attractive to the masses, and not just a specialty car only driven for special occasions, they would sell like hotcakes and be a huge success.
Toyota seems to be in the business of building fun cars now. Look at the new Tacoma. The TRD Pro is just a street legal ATV now. Make the MR2 an affordable street legal Go Cart and they will come. If Toyota can sell the new 2025 Camry with a base price of $28,400 with that engine, there's no reason that an entry level MR2 couldn't be built for well under $40k, I'm thinking more like $35k.
I write these comments like this in hopes that Toyota's engineers will read them which they should be doing anyway if they're smart. It's a free source of seeing what their consumers are thinking. And this channel just happens to be run by a Toyota engineer himself. 🙂

I'm beyond thrilled about both cars (assuming this info is credible and accurate), however what would send me over the moon with excitement is if Toyota put the new 2.0 turbo in the next gen 86. That new engine is giving me massive SR20-DET vibes and to essentially having a modern day Silvia (but a Toyota obviously) would be the best possible thing I could ask for!

Thank you so much Toyota. I have a GR Yaris at the moment and it is a blast of a car. And the best thing is that it is not ruining me and I can even afford to do the service at the dealer and every time I do, they extend the factory warranty.
I would totally buy that MR2 if I can afford it when it comes out. I have been looking at saving money for a Lotus Emira, but I don't want any of the reliability BS of Lotus. Brand new Porsche 718 are totally out of my budget. Since the Nissan Z is not available in EU and I don't really want the BMW supra, a MR2 with 400hp would be perfect for me if it is around or under 70k

Haven't heard much about the new engines other than they are designed for compactness, but I'm definitely curious to know if they will be tuned for ok-ish midrange power like the current 2.4L turbo or if they will be pushed to produce perhaps even more power than the 3cyl used in the GR Corolla.

This is exactly the news I've been waiting for ever since Toyota announced the Supra would be a BMW. Finally, not just one but two gas, manual Toyota coupes.
