You did a great service to boaters... I only discovered after changing props 20 years ago the bird's nest, eggs, fledglings, mom and dad all in there - and a wasted seal (torn not high on whiskey and downers). Ever since then, I always check when doing oil servicing. Great job Cap'n Digno de Confianza! Gracia
Thank you FatAndy That's incredible story but I believe it everywhere there's a Purvis some creature wants to do in nest. De nada y un saludo my capitan de Florida🖐
You have the best tutorials on diy for parker boats which has helped me save tons of money. Thank you for all you do! Did this today and holy cow there was a lot of fishing line. Thankfully the seals were still good, I verified by checking lowe unit oil and topping it off.
Wish I could say I never had fishing line destroy a prop seal. Learned a lesson after that one. Preventive maintenance is key. As always great video. Thanks capt
Got those same pins coming before I pull my prop off to grease and check. If I find line in there I’m going to look into pulling the washer off like the comments suggested to look more. If no line I’m going to grease and put it back. Thanks for the vid again. 👍🏽🤟🏽
nice propeller no damage or heavy scratches well done.if you running smooth you can get a long lasting bushes and prevent the spun hub.have a nice day captain
Thank you Captain and you know it's hard specially in the Bahamas since the water so shallow I've been very careful with hitting ground but I know one day will happen hopefully it doesn't happen
It was my pleasure Captain thank you so much for getting in touch name for stopping by and chatting with me it was awesome. And please tell your wife to collaborate with you in one trip. Hi Capt... thank you for another great video.... My boat is on a lift and I have to be very careful not to drop the parts in the water when I do this! ☺ .... I do this, and change the lower unit oil/lube from a floating work barge... It would be nice to do it from land like you do!
I know what you mean Captain you're limited to do things that other people can do because you're in the water it has his benefits maintains the boat bottom paint looking good 👍
You don't need the prop to start the engine captain. And you can see that when you put the engine in idle. It doesn't move so there's no need to have it on while starting on neutral
Hi capt, I don`t know if it makes any difference but you install the big washer with the letters in, You took it apart with the letters out, I never have change mine so I don`t know if it matters, Tight lines , David c
Yes Maggie Fishing is correct. For Out On The Reef I’d suggest. 1. Take the brass Thrust Washer off to further inspect behind there where other line can embed into the seal. The washer just pulls away with a rubber mallet tap or two. 2. I’d recommend replacing the seal that usually takes a marine mechanic to do. This is because you only have one engine. Perhaps not If you know the line did not get emebed or between the thrust washer and the shaft seal. An area you did not show in the video... Reasons why to replace your lower unit drive shaft seal. 1. Scheduled maintenance at 200 hours. Including fluid change. 2. You have no Kicker or back up motor. 3. Sea tow is great but takes a day to get to you and will only tow you to the nearest safe port. 4. Rules out if the integrity of the lower unit engine was compromised, or if is about to go out because of salt water intrusion in the lower unit gearbox. Safe navigating captain. Cheers J.
Great video and great advice but you should clean the old grease and water off of the prop shaft, prop and all other parts before re-greasing and putting it back together.
Hi Capt, I enjoyed watching your videos. Thinking of buying a used 21 ft pilothouse and thinkering about whether to find a one or two outboard setup. Two outboards seemed to be a reliable setup offshore. It gives you a backup outboard when the other one breaks. Can you pls share your own opinion. I was just wondering why you chose one outboard setup. thanks
Hi Ootr, another helpful video maybe I should carry a spare nut and cotterpin along with my spare prop , hopefully never have to use it but might be nice just in case
Hey Captain, have you had a trip where you take on a lot of water, specifically over the bow and do you have any water leakage whatsoever into the cabin from the Square Hatch above the cabin or by the windshield at all?
Yes you always get a couple of drops of leakage especially when the weather is rough it's normal on all these Crooked pilothouse the weather seal leak that's what we pay for,🤔⚓
Out On The Reef I take a considerable amount of water into my cabin and I’m wondering if the boat was not built correctly or something. Would the fishing line melt to the prop??
What I was told is that and breaks your seal with your oil is in the lower unit and then you have a leak and then your motor out drive will burn out
