Is Callum Ilott deserving of a Formula 1 seat?

- Last year's FIA Formula 2 Championship saw Mick Schumacher win the title by just 14 points over Callum Ilott. However, while Schumacher will make his Formula 1 debut, Ilott is still left on the sidelines. A great many people are disappointed with this, however was Ilott deserving of a Grand Prix seat? In this video, I aim to find out...

Sound like Ilott's career
THATS A LOT OF DAMAGE
The brutality of the comment
This is the major point he did not touch on. Ilott does not bring the cash or commercial value. But I think he will get his shot. If F1 just becomes a bunch of billionaires kids racing. I won't be that interested anymore.
JESUS CHRIST CHILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
As a Drugovich supporter, that hits waaay to close for comfort.
If HAAS weren't fucked financially he'd prob have one so I think he deserves it
If Haas is financially stable:
-No rookie driver in haas. Guenther said haas is not ready for rookie drivers.
-Giovinazzi or Kimi would've been kicked out to make room for mick
-Mazepin got no other option except to put his money in williams, george would've been left without a seat.
-Ilott is still left without a seat anyway
@@tegarsatriyo486 True. Even Mag+Gro salary is less than 10M a year
@@tegarsatriyo486 If Williams got rid of Russell for Mazespin, I would've lost hope in the team there and then. God knows they would tho
@Dutch van der Linde That's the general idea. Toto has done everything he can to keep George in that Williams seat until Mercedes are ready for him. I'd be surprised if he isn't in a Merc next season especially with the nature of Lewis' and Valtteri's contracts.
@@tegarsatriyo486 Giovinazzi is sitting in the "Ferrari seat" at Alfa Romeo. If Ferrari wants to decide who sits in the Ferrari seat at Alfa that is Giovinazzi losing it, not Kimi. Even if Ferrari had had the option to decide both seats they'd be complete fools to deny Mick a mentor in the form of a very experienced former world champion.
Last of all. If Haas is financially stable *they won't keep both Grosjean and Magnussen forever* That means a seat at Haas. Since Mick ends up next to Kimi at Alfa, it's in Haas' best interests to hire another Ferrari academy driver. Especially since both Grosjean and Magnussen appeared to be distinctly average drivers - even before they drove for Haas.
tl:dr : if Mazepin got a seat, Illott should've gotten one.
The question is where would Illot go ? Not at HAAS because it ain't surviving without Mick's german sponsors and Mazepin's Russian sponsor...
is mazepin got a seat illot should have gotten two lmfao

Seeing his carrier leading up to F2, I would say no. However, his 2020 season does look like he deserves a seat. Overall, I don’t know if he does deserve a seat. Does he deserve it more than Mazepin? Heck yah he does, but do either of those two deserve it? Not Mazepin, but maybe Ilot. I would want to see him drive another season to see if he is consistent enough.
Didn't Mazepin beat him during a season though? (Not literally, that is obvious that happened)
@@denismatei937 Mazepin in last season is like a cheetah to me, super fast in some moment but after that....meh
and the style tho, aggressive at the very least
@@dhupee i mean there definitely are more talented people than him but he doesn't actually seem slow so we'll see how he performs... probably in 2022 since 2021 is irrelevant to Haas anyways.
I don’t think what he’s done up to F2 matters, because F2 is where everyone is trying to get to. And he was a proper title contender, so I say he definitely deserves it. Especially against mick Schumacher who also was in his 2nd season. If anyone lower than him deserves an F1 drive, so does he.

Proof that Stroll is a bit underrated.
Stroll is inconsistent but he is a fantastic driver on a good day. Stroll did show a ton of talent before getting into F1. Mazepin on the other hand.......

When you look at some of the other talent that have missed out in recent years, no. Just cause he's better than Mazebin doesn't mean he should be in F1. That's not really a yardstick to compare someone with.

Stroll leading with close to 200 points ahead of the next guy in the championship 😳
And people say he's trash, poor guy was thrown into F1 too early
just as talented as leclerc he should have been in f2 in 2017 and after he dominated that, thrown into f1. It was too big of a jump f3 to f1 not everyone is verstappen
@@jacobrinka3336 meh, I wouldn't say he's up there with Charles and Max but he's definitely not miles off either
Otherwise I agree with you fully, finally some common sense around here 😁👍
Well i mean did you watch the Turkish Gp? I think that race sums Stroll quite well, he has potential, duh, he has podium finishes, but his main problem has always been the inconsistency when it comes to his pace, and he has admitted that himself. One race he is super quick and in the next one he is not, hopefully one day he can find a cure for that. Strolls beyond the grid episode is worth a listen.
He was driving for prema f3 which is equivalent to mercedes f1. And his car is the only prema car that get the upgrades that season. There are even rumors that his car is illegally tweaked.
@@ckasetti1233 turkey wasn’t his fault
Callums chance of f1 seat was gone when Alfa Romeo kept Kimi and Gio on tbh I really thought Giovinazzi would get the boot in replace of him or Mick and Callum at Haas
It was always gonna be an uphill battle trying to convince Alfa to choose ANYONE over Italian Jesus.
Alfa romeo that is the title sponsor for sauber wants an Italian driver, just like the german Haas sponsor wants a german driver. Money tips the scale in your favor for a seat

They weren't lying when they said they getting back into f1
01:33 is pure brilliance
Wish we had a 12 team grid. Hulk, Illot, Albon, and Magnussen being off the grid makes very little sense to me beyond the obvious that, "Cash is king." Arguments could also be made for Schwartzmann and Vandoorne
agree, and the likelihood they may never come back or get in is kinda sad
I'll agree with Hulkenberg but I'm have disagree on the others. With a few exceptions the grid is pretty much perfect at this moment in time.
I was hoping that Ilott would stay in F2 and win the championship convincingly next year to silence the naysayers. These "test driver" seats have an unfortunately frequent history of never actually amounting to an F1 seat, much less an F1 career. Mick definitely deserves the spot more than Ilott, as he simply drove a better season overall (as reflected in the results), but I hope both Ilott and Schwartzman get a shot at an F1 seat eventually.

Here before Callum Ilott comments something cheeky like he always does
Love these videos, keep it up, you are amazing!
I think he is more deserving than Mazepin, talent wise. But we all know money talks.
Especially when that team desperately needs it.
money doesnt talk it preaches in motorsport
Cash is King
- DTS S3 E1
Haas need money, so no shit
Of course it does this is ah incredibly expensive sport and driver sponsors are often the biggest incomes
Looking back over the season, his 1 lap pace was incredible and that almost worked against him at times....many poles but almost no points in the sprint races.
That’s cause his racecraft was nonexistent
10:01 I always loved the way he ends the video with his quote,"BE RESPECTFUL, BE WHOLESOME AND BE AWESOME AND DON'T BE A MANUS".
1:17 just love how the F2 car spitting flames from the exhaust system. Today's F1 cars are not doing that anymore.
4:11 at the hairpin Ilott slammed into Jack Aitken's Dallara.
4:43 and the other things as can be seen here in this dramatic reconstruction.
When we have Mazepin and Giovinazzi still in F1, Callum defiantly is. He’s a dream guest for our podcast along with Josh Revell.
@Mr. E he is
Respect Gio bro?
@@f1memes881 he isnt
@@f1memes881 he was level on points with raikkonen and outqualifed him
@Mr. E he’s slow in quali gets a good start and then his race pace is awful. He’s thieving a living in that Alfa. Without his hair, he’s an F2 driver at best.
Ilots rise wasn’t as rapid as yukis but Tsunoda didn’t win formula 2 or 3 either and everyone said he deserved a seat (which he does). Ilot is a rapid qualifier and a consistent driver in the race, when you look at anyone who was eligible to enter f1 last year he 100% earned himself a seat. I feel like if there is an open seat for a Ferrari junior next year he mightn’t get it if Shwartzmans performances are good enough this year.
I just love the sound effect when he says Nikita Mazepin
I was just thinking about Callum Illot today. Thanks for making this!
I think Alfa Romeo could very well not extend Giovinazzi's contract for next season, which could open the door for Ilott. Kimi will stay at Alfa for as long as he wants to, they like to keep him for the technical feedback he provides. I hope he gets his shot, I like Antonio but with Schumacher now in F1 and Ferrari wrapping their arms around Charles Leclerc as their golden child, I highly doubt he'll ever make it up to the Ferrari seat.
Hey man, i LOVE your vids, i was wondering when you're gonna do a vid on cars 3??
That

Oehhh a English man pronouncing Amersfoort racing.
Try saying vaaan aaamersfoort

Amersfoort is also a city in the Netherlands

Nice to see Josh not having a sponsor in solidarity with Callum
His F1 chances are in the mud I'm afraid, especially if Schwartzman wins F2 best he can hope for is to be the main man in Ferrari's #1 WEC car in a couple years
That’s just not true at all mate
He’s good enough arguably even better than Robert he’s very consistent and he has been very close to a championship before so he definitely still has a very good chance
He’s already gonna be racing in the factory Ferraris in GTWC so the chances are high. Will he be the main man tho, idk, Ferrari has a lot of good drivers.
Reminds me of Joylon Palmer.
Slow burn driver that eventually wins more because of experience rather than raw talent, but still manages to be solid, just not setting the world on fire like Leclerc or Verstappen
This comment section needs to understand that drivers bring much more than on-track performance. Mazepin provides bad driving and bad PR, but unparalleled financial backing. That makes him the best man for the job.
Yeah people saying he should replace mazepin don't understand that without mazepin those two Haas seats don't exist
I feel like the focus of these videos should not be "does [driver] deserve a seat" but instead "does [driver] deserve a seat MORE then others" as anyone who makes it to F2 deserves to be in F1, but it is about who deserves it the most.
and callum definitely deserved it the most last season
FYI: Ragunathan competed in F2.
And Deledda
and Sean Gelael
And Calderon
And Nissany.
I think he deserved it. But rookies entering f1 this year was only about money (mick with 1&1, mazepin with uralkali, and Yuki with Honda) fortunately mick and yuki are on the grid with loads of talents but had Callum Mazepin’s money, he would be on that haas team
Callum Ilott- Does everything right to reach Formula 1
Meanwhile Ferrari- Nah....we ain't doing that here
I like your content so much. You can just speak for hours without me getting bored
I predict both he and Schwartzman will become the 2022 Alfa drivers, I think this is Kimi's last season and unless Anto produces some magic this season I don't think he's going to stick around for much longer
Agreed. I like both Alfa drivers but sad to say as much as I love Kimi he's getting old, and Antonio hasn't done anything that special in my view. I'm relatively new to F1 and F2 but I think based on what I've seen and read, Schwartzman and Ilott probably can become the Alfa drivers in 2022.
No chance in hell they will replace both drivers, they might even keep both for next year
@@VeranaXS I mean... Haas just has done that
@@hammyjammies yes but haas currently really needs money more than good experienced drivers that's why they have basically the same car as next year
Alfa actually has good financial backing and has a good chance of moving up the midfield this year
Also next year experience will be be alot more valuable with new regulations so rookies will be a bigger risk
"This episode was sponsored by..." Me :) lol keep up the good work Josh!
Just a quick question, at 3:18, what is that large bump on the side of both cars. I have always wondered this and would like to know what it is for
Your probably talking about the air intake on the f3 cars, the large torpedo shape helps it cut through the air yet still provide positive pressure on the intake manifold
Daruvala left the chat after you said Callum had the worst engine 😂😂
1:34 I need this sound effect for whenever I do RUclips videos or TikTok.
The issue with f1 is there just simply isn't enough room for everyone, there's a few I think are easily good enough, but they can easily miss out on their chance
More talent than money: The age old tragedy of life in motorsport. I wonder how many of these youngsters would consider employing the late Justin Wilson's "stock shares" fundraising idea. Sounds to me like Ilot has the kind of results so far that might just draw some interest in such an endeavor.

Long answer: Yes, of course
Why is the video 10min 13 seconds? Should have been 2 seconds with just one word - ‘Yes’
At least this season he’ll be racing as a factory Ferrari GT driver which is still a great seat to be in especially with Ferrari coming to Le Mans with a hyper car in a couple years.
Kong vs godzilla racing edition looks lit asf
what do you think about Igor Fraga and the possibility of sim racing leading to a future F1 driver?
Jo Josh, don't know whether you did already, but what about a video about Maximilian Guenther? Maybe as kind of inspiration. Appreciate your videos, keep up the great work
Thank god you spelled his name right. People in the comments should do the same especially when presented with the correct spelling in the video title.
He deserve it more than Mazepin, that's for sure!
He never will though, that Ferrari academy is stacked. He'll get jumped by shwartzman and pourchaire will get first dibs on the Alfa seat cause he's a Sauber junior
At least he still has a job as a Ferrari GT driver
Note from the future, Ilott races in Indycar now
What's the impression of the new 18" wheels and tyres in F2, it has been a couple of years but I have not found much feedback about how they ride
maybe next year if Kimi retires they can take in Ilott to pair with Gio or even go full FDA driver lineup with Ilott & Schwartzmann (hopefully)
I don't write in here often (even tho I'm a super early subscriber and have been watching you for well over a year now) but I have one request this time:
Is it possible that u can make a video on the legend sabine schmitz? Tyvm
If you look at the relatively high numbers of F2 drivers that are either in current f1 seats, and since this vid, Ilot going into f1 as a reserve driver,,i think there is a much bigger game afoot in f1.
With russel, norris, leclerc, sainz, russel, shumacher, ( spinazepin), and the whole bundle of f2 drivers either in reserve or sim drivers, the rules change next year will see a whole lot of current f1 drivers leave, and these youngsters getting f1 seats in the next 2 or 3yrs.
I can see bottas, perez, alonso, tsunoda ( unless he learns to keep his mouth shut, and not break cars), raikonen, lattifi, riccardo all either leaving f1 or driving for pay in tail end cars.
The big rule changes will leave plenty of seats free, and i can see ilot in a alfaromeo in 22

So we put a team owned by the cold war rivals with a driver pairing of world war 2 allies turned rivals, great
Callum is an amazingly quick driver, getting so many pole positions, just never can put it all together, but he definitely deserved the seat over the boxer, hope he can get in at some point but it's though
It's times like these where you wish there were 3 or 4 other teams, even if they were just backmarkers, to give drivers like Callum a chance :) Even if it was Marussia-spec, a few great drives could prove top Ferrari guys he's good enough!
Nice sponsor :)
Chill hop music is lite!
Who are these Gunther and Eriksson guys? They seem to jave had decent results in F3. Is Gunther in FE right now or am i wrong? Also, is it just me, or, at least from this video, are Mazepin's junior career achievements not also half decent as well?

i think he does deserve a shot at F1, but i don't think he was quite ready yet for this year. so if he can dominate F2 this year (i do really believe he has the talent, so all that's needed is for the car to not break down and him to be a tad more consistent) he could definitely be in F1 next year. I think he's got the speed and the talent.
i hire this guy in f1 2020 game in season 2 I have the 4 fastest car and finish 2nd in the end he in the two seasons I have him he score 1 point. One whole point So No he doesn't need a f1 seat :( one star!!
