  • So yeah, I've had my say on this dude and not a lot of what I've previously said was very good. But that was pretty much based on his performances from 2017 to 2019. Now we're in the middle of 2021, has my opinion changed on the boy?

Lance Stroll right now is a new Grosjean. He’s inconsistent but on good days, puts on good results. Inconsistency in F1 is what makes some drivers a bit ignored/doubted. One day he’s in the top 10 while in the next few races he’s outside of the points.

I want to see him (and the rest of the grid for that matter) try a race in IndyCar. The cars in European series tend to be more engineer's cars than driver's cars where engineers set up the cars and drivers need to adapt to how the cars are setup. Like how in F2 and F3 there is a clear team hierarchy despite being 'spec' series. The cars used in IndyCar and the American open wheel ladder are all about the driver finding a setup they're comfortable with and wringing out performance by driving the way they're best at. A great example is seeing on-board footage of Pato driving versus Palou driving. Pato is all over the place while Palou is very composed behind the wheel yet they can both extract the maximum form the cars.

      - Average Race result: STR 10,62 - 11,00 VET
      - Stroll leads 7-4 in terms of who finished ahead in races (Baku, Silverstone and Hungary discarded bcs of DNFs - Baku and Hungary would have gone Vettel's way, Silverstone would go to Lance; and in the last 2 races there was some atrition between them, so I'd say they were pretty equal, which means that overall, Lance and Seb would be pretty equal)
      - Russell was severely aided by Spa's qualifying and basically got 9 free points (huge kudos to him, but you saw how Sochi went, he'd most likely not retain that 2nd place, not even P5, which would make up for 10 points)
      - And yes, Stroll hasn't shown absolutely brilliant pace, and yet he is managing to, "race-result-wise", match Seb, or even beat him. 3 brilliant results for Vettel (4 if you count Hungary) won't tell the whole story - that's why, for me, points are misleading
      - Stroll's best finish this year is P7 at Monza, which isn't brilliant, but couple that with 4 P8 and 2 P10 and you have 7 top10 finishes out of 15 races, in arguably the 7th best car, while Vettel has only managed 4 top10 finishes (5 with Hungary), with 3 (4) of those being top5 finishes

It's definitely 100% the chassis this time around. RP/AM went with a 2019 Mercedes and then ended up eating crow a year later with the floor diffuser and brake duct changes. Mercedes has found a way to turn their 2020 car into a contender in 2021, but Aston more or less shot themselves in the foot since the 2021 regs were pushed to 2022 leaving them with essentially a 2019 car they had to continue to build on. The way it seems, a lot of things that were tossed in betting on a one off shafted them long term. I would not be surprised if the Aston is giving Stroll trouble the same way the 2020 Ferrari gave Seb trouble. The chassis went from strong and predicable to unpredictable as hell. That ruins confidence.
And I am not even basing this on a bias towards Stroll, I am just looking at it logically. There was no way Racing Point expected they were going to sneak by the rules the way they did and get away with it long term. So, they duplicated the 2019 Mercedes car to get more winnings based on placement in 2020 so they had better funding going into the new regs hit. Then Covid happened and everyone got screwed. It's like Mercedes with DAS, they put it in the 2020 car as a sendoff of the regs, knowing that the new 2021(2022 regs now) wouldn't allow that. Then 2021 regs ended up being a modified 2020 and Aston has to take a car that is a 2019 car especially, much like Alpine and Sauber.....and look where they are in the standings. Surprise, surprise, they fell back in the standings.

Lance Stroll is the only F1 driver that i've seen in 25 years of watching the sport that goes from absolutely bang average in perfect conditions, to a superstar when it all gets tricky. The more difficult it is, the better he does. Turkey last year, rain on bad surface, he sticks it on pole and dominates most the race. It has to be something in his driving style, how he works tyres etc, because you can't be as good as he is in the worst conditions without serious talent. We see it in dry races too, when the car is heavy and the grip goes down, he's generally fairly good, he's capable of picking up lots of places (albeit helped by qualifying lower than he often should) but the guy has very little pure speed in the best conditions, new tyres, low fuel etc. He's a total mystery.

i feel like there is a weird underappreciation for WEC drivers. They do a heck of job, driving for, 6, 8, 12 or even 24 hours in LeMans on some of the most difficult tracks of the world. Sebring with it's suuuper bumpy surface is so hard to nail consistently. In LeMans you have to get through a lot of complicated mid to high speed corners while basically having no downforce as that would slow you down on Mulsanne. And you have to do that for sooo many laps, in all conditions, day, night, dry and wet. You basically need to nail the whole package of being a racing driver. But still it is often seen as a "playground" for "failed" F1 drivers.

Honestly, Lance I think is a good wild card to have on the grid because while not fully consistent he can be actually wildly good when he’s on a good day. It’s actually almost strange how quick he can be sometimes. Lance got pole position in a super wet track back in Turkey 2020 and even beat Verstappen and by a solid margin too. Like around 3 tenths. I don’t mind him being in F1 because I feel like he’s that wild card in F1 where he might just win a race or two. I think he provides for the sport today and I’m glad to see him on the grid. I do agree his inconsistency last year were greatly exaggerated as people forget tire failure in mugello, Russia having Charle put him out of the race and Germany getting covid. Hardly his fault whereas Bahrain, portimao and Imola he had some input in the outcome. The problem was that he has a good season whereas Checo had a great year. This year though his unfortunate tire failure came out the same time Seb podium which for a team like Aston Martin is next to impossible to overcome. I do hope he lives up to the title of F1 driver cause the better a driver performs, the more they push their competitors to new heights like Checo did with Ocon, Daniel did to Max and now that he found his footing at Mclaren he is starting to do for Lando.

2020 he was actually really good for a large portion of the season, he has promise, next year is make or break for him imo

Yes, he gave Vettel floor damage in Monza, which basically ended his race, otherwise both could have finished in the points.

As a Canadian and a fan of F1, I can say that I am completely indifferent to Lance Stroll and couldn't give two shits how well or how poorly he does.

Same, and based on the very few Canadian fans I have met (west coast), none of them are big stroll fans

To add to CC F1’s segment, Lance’s pole last year made front page news here in Montreal. I even saved the newspaper!

I'm from Toronto and I'll tell you how we view Candian drivers here, Gilles was a man sent from God as our saviour, Jaques disgraces his father's name, Sir Lancelot is an average driver and we don't like or dislike him, and GOATifi is well the GOAT, we know he's an average driver but he's so nice and everyone genuinely loves him. Also, racing isn't very well known here and there arent many people who even know he exists, racing is getting increasingly popular every year here but people still don't have a high interest.
