- First Blood is one of the most unique action films because of the subject matter. A post Vietnam veteran is under attack by a small town sheriff. Here's my review. #rambo #FirstBlood #LastBlood

I remember it being 1982 and my older cousin came to town from Portland, Oregon to stay with his father for Summer and we were goimg with my dad to a wedding of a family friend and my cousin telling us about First Blood. I was 8 going on nine that summer and after hearimg about the movie I begged my father the whole week to take us to it and he and his brother took my cousin and I to it. Funny thing is me being so young not understanding that both my uncle who served in vietnam in the Special Forces and my father who served in the Army Combat Engineers during the Tet Offensive, how this movie affected them during us viewing it. I remember them both being very Tense and very serious during the whole movie. At the conclusion of the movie when Rambo Breaks down it was very emotional for them both and I remember my father taking a very deep breath and was fighting back tears and my uncle kind of nodding his head in approval of Stallone and the movie. I remember back then the veterans still weren't treated very good and they still were made to feel bad about being there and right after we went to that movie we all went to this Vietnam veterans get together and my uncle and after both got these real cool t-shirts that commemorates them being in Vietnam and my father who was a photographer took pictures of them both and I still have the picture and I think That First Blood kind of helped them feel a little better about themselves. That's big time because Vietnam really messed my father up with PTSD that took effect a couple years after 82 and Agent Orange a few years later. The government finally recognised that my father was exposed to the chemical but it took them 25 years and two bouts of cancer for them acknowledge it.
Will Grello thank you for sharing this heartfelt story. So many soldiers in Vietnam paid the ultimate sacrifice. I always try to take the time to talk to any of them that I come in contact with.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews no problem brother. Thankyou for taking the time to read my comment. But really the First Blood series kind of helped my father feel better about being a veteran. Him and my Uncle are huge Stallone fans as am I we never missed a single movie in the theater. Well we didn't go see stop or my mom will shoot but the rest we always were ready to watch a great Stallone movie. I just wish my uncle who served in the Special Forces on Recon Team Mamba was still alive because he really liked the first one and the 2008 one. Cool thing is his superior officer who fought alongside him kind of like Troutman became a Two Star general. Gen. Eldon Bargewell and he and the fort Bragg green beret color guard came to his funeral. It wasn't until then that we found out how highly decorated of a soldier he was it blew me away. He never told us how many awards he won. But I got to meet his buddy and shake the hand of a general in charge of Delta force which was a great honor. My uncle told me once when we were drinking beers and listening to his favorite singer Marty Robbins, that he regretted getting out of the service after his tour. He said he too probably could have done what his buddy Eldon did and became a general but he said he just wanted to get back home and party. He said the first thing he did was go visit my dad at his work and he was able to purchase a small handgun in the lunchroom of the potlatch mill my father worked at. He said times were different back then imagine being able to purchase a firearm at your workplace. He then said I didn't feel safe until I had that weapon on me, after that he said he could breathe. He never complained about having PTSD and I know he had it but smoked a ton of weed and drank a lot of beers to calm the nerves. My uncle being a green beret he told us he did approve of Stallone and First Blood. Ironic that the last movie I ever watched with my Uncle was 2008 Rambo on cable in 2010 about a year before he passed. I wish he was alive for this new one I would have bought him a ticket and picked him up and we would have watched it this Friday. Like Rambo he lived in Chaing Mai back in 1983-84 and even named his small yacht after it with the city name painted on the back. Have a good one Lee, I know on Friday my brothers and I are gonna while we watch Rambo in his final movie.
Great story.
@@currahee556 thanks David. I have hundreds of them I spent a lot of time with my uncle growing up. Since my cousin was only 8 months older than me whenever he would come visit which was every summer and spring and winter break. Then when he came to live with his dad fulltime we were inseparable.
First blood is the best one in the franchise; MY FAVORITE!!! 👍👍 😃
Best, but I can watch the 4th one the most.
Love this movie. Can't wait to see Last Blood this weekend.
I saw "First Blood" in the theater when I was a kid, and I had never even seen a Rocky film before, so I was new to Stallone.
When they ran that knife across his chest in the flashback, that was something I'll never forget. "First Blood" was one of my greatest moviegoing experiences.
Then next year I saw "Rocky 3" in the theater, my first Rocky film. That was even more incredible for me.
Those films are a year apart, and it's amazing how different those characters were. Not just the person, but the way Stallone seemed to transform his body from one film to another.
And then look at "Nighthawks." That was released the same year as "First Blood" and it's hard to believe it's the same guy in both films.
Great video Lee! First blood doesnt get enough crédit, great movie.
"Don't push it! Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe."
I get chills every time that scene comes up when I'm watching this. It just never gets old.
Rambo is in my top 5 movies of all time. I love it more and more on each watch. Cant wait to see Last Blood tomorrow.
Excellent review bro!!
Locarbmonster Thanks brother. Last blood tonight!
One of my own personal favorites. It's the last movie my dad (who served in Vietnam) and I watched together before he died. Such a great movie though with so many memorable scenes. Thanks for the in-depth review of it.
I LOVE watching The Rambo Film's even especially seeing them in a Marathon in September and November Month...I feel The Rambo Vibe for those 2 Months
Juno2000 They are great in marathon form.
First Blood. One of my favorite 80's movies.
I've followed you for about a year now and have seen damn near every review you've done, going back to some of the earliest ones. This one however, I'm going to have to say is probably one if not your very best, Lee. This movie is way too often overlooked as an action film ( which it is clearly) but it goes way deeper than that, often being very much a thriller and a psychological study. It's very tragic and the final speech to Troutman is soul crushing when he mentions the hatred of civilians he suffered in addition to witnessing sheer horror.
It's always an honor to have you share your military background with us all and as always, I am eternally grateful for your service and the service of millions of other veterans everywhere. Thank you!
Michael L Rakes Thank you so much Michael!!! 👏🖤
I've warmed up to First Blood over the years. When I first saw it, I didn't really like it. But I gave it a second chance & I'm glad I did. The maiming montage in the forest is one of the best sequences in the film. David Caruso was one of the deputies in the film long before his roles in the tv shows NYPD Blue & CSI: Miami. Kirk Douglas was originally supposed to play Cournal Troutman. There's an animated series called Rambo: The Force Of Freedom that aired in the late 80s.
Wow, I never thought of Troutman as similar to Dr. Loomis...
I like how this movie subtly displays how people enjoy their freedom but don't appreciate those who fought to provide it.
My Pops served and retired from the Air Force, he passed last year. Thank you for your service! Love the flick and your reviews.
JoWeMa So sorry about the loss of your father.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Thanks man, I appreciate that
'First Blood' is a great film, it's a shame the two '80s sequels were a bit on the bombastic side as it somewhat diminished the character. However when they revisited it with 'Rambo', that felt more like a true sequel to FB.
Thanks for the behind the scenes info Lee.
I love how Rambo goes out of his way to be deliberately non-lethal he probably could have escaped from that police station a lot faster if he was being lethal.
It's an amazing character study this film is as good of a drama as it is an action movie
This movie was so awesome to watch as a kid at sleepovers... Then came the cartoon, cereal, etc lol.
I watch this movie every now and then, and rediscover its genius every time.
RyThYmnation 1383 Same here man.
First Blood is one of my all time favorites! Great review and THANK YOU for your service Drum dums 👍🇺🇸
ShotgunMikey Thank you!
Nice review, Lee! It's so easy to just lump this first film in with the other more action-driven Rambo movies, but I've always loved the underlying messages and deeper themes of this movie.
Pause the video at 08:07 ! Is that Axl Rose with a cup of noodles?!?! Hilarious!! Awesome video anyways! Cheers!
Brewtal Austria OMG it is!! 😂😂
Haha eagle eying for the win!
I ask myself how did I miss this yesterday. 🤔💭🤷♀️lol I haven't seen last blood yet cause I know it came out today. I'll be watching it within the next few days. You mentioned a number of behind the scenes stuff that I never knew about first blood, like the movie originally being a 3 hr movie and using real rats to name a few. I have to tell you that I love all these Rambo Movies but my brother is actually the one that's really into the Rambo Franchise. Everytime any of the Rambo movies come out on cable he watches them, he knows all the lines to each movie but the one that stands out the most for me that my brother loves repeating alot when the movie goes on is "All I wanted was something to eat" it drives his girlfriend nuts that she has to leave the room. lol My brother doesn't know this but this year I'm getting him 3 Rambo Tshirts for Christmas. One of them has that phrase printed on it. lol One last thing Lee, is that I really admire you for being in the service as long as you were. My uncle served for 21yrs also retired and my Grandpa served in the Army and actually fought on the field at WWII. He's going on 3yrs since he passed away but before that he once told me that he was shot on the arm or leg during the war (I can't remember which). He earned his purple heart plus other medals and he was recognized during his funeral services. That's why i have so much respect for anybody and everybody that has served for our country, including you and for that I thank you.
Hey Lee. Another great review. This was definitely my favorite out of the franchise. I remember renting it at my local video store and watching it with my family when I was a kid. This one will always hold a special place in my heart. Never gets old. Also, I just wanted to say thank you again for your service to our country Lee!
Thank you, Lee, for your life of service! And for making great video reviews, these days.
Tim Lord Thank you Tim.👏❤️

if i am being honest, lee,
i appreciate this movie and its sequels
they are fun to watch
seeing stallone get into fights with the police and stuff
that is pretty amazing that he would have the guts to take on dennehy
this will definately be a 4k purchase
First Blood is an All Time Classic 80s Action/ Thriller with Badass Rambo Fight Action Throughout Stallone is The Best Here As John Rambo, and Definitely One of my Favorite Jerry Goldsmith Scores there very Sad and Great in mix Beautiful Score, Great Review Drumdum on First Blood This a Great Classic Stallone film definitely One of his best Roles he ever done, love every minute of it....
Great review Drumdums. First Blood is very Frankenstein’s monster. Rambo being the monster we made but want to throw away. Thanks for your Service Lee 🇺🇸

Matthew Boren You’re welcome Matthew!
Congrats on making it 24 years in the Air Force, I just recently found your channel and I’m enjoying it very much. As an Army vet of 8 years I really appreciated your picture from Afghanistan, brought up some fun memories of my time in Iraq.

My FAVORITE line
"Don't push it"
"Don't push it ......................"
I don’t really consider Rambo to be a franchise. I just love First Blood as a stand alone movie
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First Blood is a great movie. Sylvester Stallone should had got a Oscar nomination for his performance as John Rambo. I felt real sorry for Rambo in the movie.
Daniel Williamson Agreed. He was amazing.
Love first blood, child hood memories watching it on VHS!
corey mickanuik I have it on VHS.
JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME, SLY, and ARNOLD are without a doubt the big three (3) of action films all So Iconic in iconic roles.. . Van Damme being my favorite with BLOODSPORT, Kickboxer, Timecop, double impact, sudden impact, nowhere to run, HARD TARGET, The Quest, Street Fighter, Universal Soldier, LIONHEART !!! He revolutionized Martial Arts 🥋 to a whole new level after Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. Those 3 guys Sly, Arnold, And JCVD are worldwide phenomenal compared to the other action stars like Dolph Lundgren, Wesley Snipes, Bruce Willis, and Steven Segal, the big 3 have the fan base love WorldWide 👌🏼👍
Lee,
To me First Blood is not just a great action thriller it’s a great movie as well. I appreciate you sharing your military background; I’m about to retire this summer and your comments are spot on about Friendships and how a Veteran views war-movies as well as how our Vietnam Veterans were received as they redeployed.
Keep up the Great Work my Friend
Erick
Thanks brother. There are some things that only military vets can fully understand. Thank you for your service brother....and enjoy your retirement.
Great action movie. Love the review.
I watched First Blood as a teen for the first time and since then I’m urging everbody to watch it, when they see Rambo just as this 80s Action Hero...
Thank you for your service, much love and respect to you.
einsp227 thank you!👏
Awesome video 👍
I'm wanted to go back and commend you on this great review. Its one of my all time favorite films, and I just rewatched it last night and had my wife sit and watch it. She liked it. In my opinion it is a perfect movie. I know it technically is not but for my taste it is. It has a simple plot, great characters (especially John Rambo, he is a very deep character). Sheriff Teasle is a great villain that you love to hate as was Galt. I love the relationship between Trautman and Rambo. Im not one to get emotional easily at movies but the ending speech Sylvester Stallone delivers as he breaks down gets me misty eyed. Knowing that there are vets in real life struggling with those same things just breaks my heart. This is just a great movie with a powerful message. Great review Lee. Thank you once again Lee for your service to this great country, nothing but love and respect for you! ✌
Thanks so much Kenneth, and I completely get what you mean about this movie. John Rambo is a very deep and complex character, and might be one of Stallone's finest performances. He says so much with his silence in this role. It is a perfect movie in my mind.
Such a great movie, touched on the effects of PTSD and the need for understanding and respect for our soldiers/veterans. It's just incredibly shameful how Vietnam veterans were treated once they came home. One of Stallone's best films.....loved Richard Crenna also, and honestly Brian Dennehy was great as a small minded sheriff/ villain. Early 80s Classic.
Could not agree more. Anytime I meet a Vietnam vet, I stop to chat with them and shake their hand. Such a shame how they were treated.
Great review...one of the best action thrillers of all time! Great acting by Stallone! Nothing is Over!! You just don't turn it off!!👍👍
His most underrated acting performance imo.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews I agree...that emotional monolog at the end hit me hard...shows Stallones range in dramatic acting! He also has an underrated amazing performance in Cop Land...I think he should of got nominated for an Oscar for that...wasn't the usual action Stallone in that!
Great movie, and one of 1980's best! I'm glad that even today there are many people who recognize it for being much more than just action thriller, and that it really shows the problems through which so many veterans are suffering from, which unfortunately sometimes are not easy to deal with. Sadly, this is something i seen happen to those who are close to me as well.
What's with the superimposed picture of axl rose on the left side of the "we won't fight another rich man's war" sign? ...classic!
Leia was racist toward wookies I didn’t even realize! 😂😂😂
I loved the pictures and stories from when you served in the military. It was nice.
Thank you!
One of my absolute favorite movies. This will be one of the first 4Ks i pick up for sure.
black hawk down is my fav military movie i recommend it! thanks for ur service btw man true bravery much respect
I would even call this a western since it has that trope of a lone soldier or gunman going into a quiet town then havoc ensues. This and the first Rocky feel so similar to each other where they're both more grounded than their sequels which is a good thing for me.
Ian Bulaclac Very good point Ian! There is definitely a western vibe to first blood. It’s actually a very unique action film.
As a horror fan and a Vet, Im subscribing. You are awesome!
Thank you David...and thank you for your service.
Stolked to see Rambo tomorrow
Great and terribly underappreciated movie
I saw this in the theater and it really got to me (I cried) and then I read the book which I highly recommend although it ends differently. As a result of this movie whenever I see someone wither in uniform or with say a cap with their unit on it I always make a point of thanking them for their service. I hate how people were so misinformed back then and took out their anger over the war on the men who fought not the people who were responsible for sending them there to fight. Just seems so stupid to me. It seems our country learn its lesson. I hope so.
Bill McKinney the Mountain Man from the movie Deliverance is part of the cast of Rambo:First Blood:Part I
Iconic movie!!! 👍Together with Terminator, Cobra and Rocky, my all-time 80's favourite!!! 😍

One of my favorite films also Lee. I'm a huge Stallone fan. This movie holds a lot of nostalgia for me, I'll never forget the first time I saw it. Great review, I could never say enough about it. Stallone is great! Rocky is my favorite cinematic character, Rambo is way up there and so is Hawk (Over the Top). All Sylvester Stallone characters. I'm so pumped up for Last Blood, an I'm looking forward to your review of it. Take care Lee, an I've said it before but I want to again. Thank you so much for your service. ✌
The director of First Blood, Ted Kotcheff, is from Toronto. That's where I'm from. Go Raptors!
Awesome!
It's a true classic! I wish the last Blood movie went more in this direction. But still gonna see it. It is Stallone and Rambo!
Nicely done! I love revisiting it. Seeing those knock-off examples reminds me of Dolph's 'Red Scorpion'. I watched the hell out of it as a kid, but something tells me it didn't age very well!
I did all 4 yesterday on the channel in one sitting. That was fun.

Great Review Lee Hands Down The Best Of The Franchise 9/10 ☆☆☆☆
Verry good movies and IT shows how bad society the Vietnam veterans where treated
I’ve seen this movie for the first time around 1992 or 1993 and I love it since then...the sequels are all very good as well....in fact, First Blood is my favorite Stallone movie...
I remember watching First Blood as a kid (between 10 or 12) and I got my big nerf gun, a red bandanna and a tank and would play Rambo. Great film.

Matei Bobes Awesome!
I agree with the military movie thing. My favorite ones are less about war and more about the soldiers themselves. Rambo, Tigerland ,Hurt Locker etc
Rambo first blood is classic film
I think the first film is the best of series Lee.
Guess what I just went out and got myself a copy of Rambo first blood blu ray 4k restoration now I have to buy the others on 4k
Bill McKinney the Mountain Man is part of the cast of the first movie
the scenes with col. trautman are brilliant
when you get to rambos 2 and 3, you see trautman as a character evolve
and same goes for stallone's performance as rambo
and theres more characters in rambo 2 and 3 that are entertaining
like for 2, you have murdock , as well as that girl rambo talks to
while with 3, kurtwood smith makes an appearance as robert griggs, an embassy official that warns rambo that trautman was captured by soviet colonel zaysen and his henchmen
in both sequels, basically rambo gets into more fights with enemies
but the pacing of the fights seems to get better on these two sequels
first blood is a great start to the rambo movie series
highly recomend you look at rambo 2 and 3
Hell yeah. Troutman is one of the greatest characters ever. He's Rambo's Loomis.
Wolverine and John Rambo have a similarity with each other
Good,you got it
I still remember when my brother and I were little (he's 9 years older than me) he would always be Rambo and I had to hide so he wouldn't beat me up lol he would tie one of my dad's ties around his head, rub dirt on his face and come after me. He would set canned food in the halls so if i ran through there he would hear it fall over or hear me trip lol Ahh those were the good times lol.
Rambo:First Blood is a Christmas movie
Awesome review! I never really watched any of the sequels because they just seem to have missed the point which like you said was making a character study. Now, I'm no expert on the Vietnam War but I understand it was pretty pointless or a big mistake, and where this movie shines is showing that the soldiers were not to blame since they suffered terribly (illustrated in the last scene) because they were simply taking orders. I know there's a lot of gray areas in that regard but anyways, the movie was indeed a great character piece.
Also, it's always great to have your insight about the military life, I think you could do something really interesting based on that experience.
1982 is one big year for Jerry Goldsmith he’s a really venerated composer
Indeed.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews and he won an Oscar for his work on The Omen(1976)
The only two films in this series I really enjoy are this one and Rambo (IV). I feel that with the gritty, grounded and emotional take that each film offers they work great as companion pieces. As opposed to the second and third movies, which while rad action flicks, feel a little silly and bombastic to me. I'm hoping that with Last Blood, we get what could be seen as a real trilogy of films that have at least some of the soul of the first.
part 2 is my favorite.
@@disneyerapowerrangers2923 that's cool. I know two and three have definitely got their fans.
I think I'd lose my mind if I ever met Stallone.

You should check out A Bridge Too Far Lee. That is a great movie with a lot of A List actors of the time. It’s about the disastrous Operation Market Garden in which the allies tried to end the War before Christmas.
