- Straightforward video explaining how to approach cold orbiting and what to expect. We tried to filter out all the unnecessary info. But before you try, we recommend that you read the basics of Interceptor combat such as mechanics and how the flow of the fight goes. Pause in between the pictures so you can carefully analyze them.

Best cold orbiting tutorial on the you tube. Other videos are too advanced and not explained simply like you. They say they are beginner but not actually. You are a great teacher.
I second this notion, will definitely send this to my friends trying to learn ax combat with me!
@@yakuvorster1896 awesome👏 good luck🤞 man
Can't understate how good of a tutorial this is; I'd been struggling forever trying to learn to fly without *any* flight assist, but I managed to get my first reasonably stable orbit after about 20 minutes of practice!
That is amazing to hear now go get those flowers :D
This is really a great tutorial! Finally I found someone who teachs in the right way.
How can I add 1 millions of likes?
This video certainly is cool and revolutionary.
Very comprehensive and easy to understand cold orbiting, love it!
the best (by far) Cold orbit training video. Thanks. I will spread the word
It's amazing what simplicity can accomplish isn't it :D
Great video and clearly explained
This is gold, best AX tutorial for a beginner like me
Yep. I've been practicing orbiting Jameson Memorial. It was actually really hard at first because I'm using a controller. It's much more difficult I think. Also, I've tried to just get out there and start practicing but I keep getting interdicted by multiple Thargoids. I need to practice on just one but I can't even get to a conflict zone without being bombarded first.
I think the safest bet is getting a fleet carrier and just jumping to a system with it
@@mariemonroe553 I never got one because of the upkeep.
what's your control scheme for controller movement?
No wonder I could never get the hang of this, I've been using pitch and roll all the time. Thanks for the tips Commander 😎
Oh i forgot to respond... Yes they are hard to learn at start but once you get better try implementing roll
how do you aim without pitch?
Perfect creation here
You definitely have some serious skills. Excellent tutorial!!!
I try my best to make it accessible for everyone :D
Thanks for the clear explanation, figured out orbits of my FC yesterday so next time I see a cyclops it’s on
Fantastic video, really well done. Feel far more confident I can actually be effective against the murder flowers now! Before I was just spinning around in space like a young dog with Gauss cannons for eyes!
Truly Reborn
GOATed cold orbit tutorial tbh
I think I'll be switching my mouse left and right directions to be yaw, because the rolling is what's tripping me up. Amazing video btw.
Yep that's what the recommended controls are don't forget to check the link.
Try not to make any sudden movements be slow and precise don't overcorrect either.
@@mariemonroe553 Did basilisk solo in a Fer De Lance today. 07 thank you for the help.
@@vax3783 in an epic ship too
Best way to get a good feel and practice orbiting, is to pop asteroids (a.k.a. deep core mining). It helps learn aiming, lead fireing projectiles while on the move, and practice at keeping your nose pointed at the target. Also helps if you avoid using collector limpets, and just bounce them into cargo off the door. Eventually you can even learn to orbit with the assyst off, and boosting around a target while always pointing directly at it.
AND... you make money. While learning to maintain situational awareness so as not to hit the surrounding asteroids.
Great, great, great tutorial ty very much.
Ooh. This is nice.
I gotta get to putting some parts together for a practice ship. That and maybe changing something in the controls menu for keeping my ship steady during FA off.
Forgot all about the thermal vent laser too.
Have fun :D
O7 CMDR, best tutorial for cold orbiting i found.
Wishing for best improvement :D
Great Tutorial! If not one of the best, I'll be looking forward smashing some insects once out of hospital
I wish you a great recovery and hope to see you plucking some space flowers :D
Night vision could also help to control distance in shadows (by outlines).
I will say that this is absolutely the best tutorial for learning cold orbiting. Having said that, I can also say that it is nearly impossible to learn. So far it has been completely frustrating.
For example, how does one NOT use pitch and roll? Pitch and roll is a part of the control by mouse. Turning it off on the mouse makes the ship uncontrollable. Does one have to map pitch and roll to keys and then add that to the myriad of keys one is trying to manage?
In my experience, one jumps into a threat 5 and the Thargoid is RIGHT THERE, not 3 or 4 kms away. Once one starts shooting with the laser, the Thargoid immediately releases a swarm. So forget the orbit, one is attacked by the swarm and has to deal with that first.
This is just a few of the hundreds of unexplained things. I appreciate the tutorial, but it seems to be unrealistic considering what one really runs into.
Well first of all there is always a timer before the thargoid actually shoots and needs to release the swarm.
The video doesn't state not to use pitch.
And well as for the roll on mouse that is precisely one of the worst settings you can have and is recommended to change on one of ur preferred keys such as A/D or Q/E which is included in the link of the recommended settings.
You can see at the start of the video there is an imagine pointing out my key layout and mouse roll is not part of it
And normally we don't start cold orbit fights right next to the face we use our speed to boost away and make distance WHILE the thargoid is deploying it's swarm
Coool drawing mate!
try using "smooth" animation curves, they look better
Thanks for the advice :D
@@mariemonroe553 problem with smooths thou is that it starts and ends smoothly, soo from keyframe to keyframe it may get... odd, but it can just be altered to use different curves
Great video! Thank you very much for the tutorial. I have a question here. How can you distinguish goid move vs goid boost? In your video you sometimes follow the moving direction of the goid, but sometimes moves towards the oppsite.
When thargoids boost they usually stop for a second , look at you before doing so. They also make a distinct higher pitched noise when the boost happens. Normally you want to follow the goid but in a way that doesn't collide with their exact path. Because if you go in the same pathing as they do itll end up colliding with you aka orbit decay. Its hard to say what to do, like its not a pattern each situation requires a different input so you need to see it yourself when youre in danger and whats safe to do.
But the idea is always the same "what keeps me from getting too close" , "what keeps me in optimal range" , "what keeps me from getting shot". Notice how i sometimes follow it but not too much where i dont let it allign with me and shoot me.
@@mariemonroe553 Gocha. Thanks.
what control scheme do you recommend for a controller? im thinking up/down and yaw on the right stick and forward/back/left/right on the left, but then how do i pitch in order to aim?
This is interesting, but as a complete noob to Thargoids, there's a couple of assumptions being made. I didn't see any of the swirly things that seem to be there when I see the Goids - why is that, is it to do with heat? or is it the type of Thargoid?
You mentioned reloading which I think mean the Thargoid - how does one spot that?
didn't follow the fragility comment :(
Of course I have much to learn and I know I am useless at combat, but you have at least given me something to try :)
Yes you're right, this is mainly focused on just cold orbiting and usually before you get into it you need to read some basics on AX combat as a whole. I suggest using the Anti-Xeno Initiative wiki or joining the NEWP/AXIN server. There's some information to cover, too much on youtube to write. :D.
Also the fragility comment is basically if you can stay in optimal firing range for longer the more damage you will do in turn making it seem like theyre a lot weaker
Very helpful, thanks! Is there an equivalently good tutorial for how to kill the swarm with flak?
Id suggest watching Orodruins textbook cyclops, basilisk kill video.
My question is how do you just get 1 to attack you? EVERY time I run into one, 3 more warp in within 60 seconds making the odd totally against me.
Are there any cold orbiting key binding guides for controller (PS4 controller user on PC)?
Great video! If I used a keyboard your input display is awesome.
Even if you use a controller use the keyboard as a reference. For example (F) is DOWNWARDS for me. So use whatever is downwards for you.
I believe that’s right analogue stick down, but I’m confused when thrust and throttle terminologies are used. I likely need to read up on controller standard vs alternate controls schemes and what does what.
how to do all this now on the joysticks x56?
"Against a stronger interceptor type"
*Proceeds to show the strongest of all*.
I have a quick quesiton, I struggled my whole life with Flight Assist off. And I think I know why. In your video, when you move the mouse left and right, it doesn't roll the ship. It just moves it left and right. Is that correct? Because in my case, moving the mouse left/right rolls my ship to one of those directions. I forgot what the defaults were but I guess it is irrelevant now.
Yep that is correct and that is the worst setting possible for all this. Check the recommended settings I linked that should include it too
I keep getting my fingers muddled up with the up/down controls. Do you use your index finger? If so, I noticed you using the d/e key simultaneously, which I also use my index finger for. What's the technique?
I use the middle finger for forwards backwards pointing and ring fingers for left right. Its weird but thats how i adjusted it for myself. Note that the control scheme shown is more of a point of reference rather than "what you should be running". Some people have A and D for left right as it replicates some other games. But overall, however you set it up its going to take a while getting used to because your hand might end up jumping around
@@mariemonroe553 thanks for the reply! Ultimately, we only have three fingers to control the ship. Let me know if anyone here has a use for the pinky and thumb. Either can be used for a boost function, I have opted to use my thumb.
You are right, practice is the only way to master this. Regardless, it isn’t at the level of complexity of a guitar or pianist, but the same mechanics are appropriate. Ergonomically, I’m sure there is an optimal technique for manipulating a ship in four axis (up/down, roll [assuming the default yaw is moved to mouse], left/right, and forward/back). I’m with you on middle finger for fwd/back, ring on the left and index on up/down and right movements. The index/pointer finger has double the duties of the other fingers.
I suppose my question is around how that fact impacts planning an orbit beforehand, and how to manage the disadvantage those port side thrusters have (accelerating right and rolling CW) when using keyboard/mouse.
@@smrack Best of luck , experiment if you put effort im sure you can find a setup that eases everything for you. And check my channel for a video where i test with an overlay you can see me use it in a faster pace.
I have downward thrusters on L shift and upward thrusters on space bar, helps free up your pointer finger.
@@smrack I made the decision 7 years ago, to use 99% of FDevs default settings.
...Your muscle memory will kick in pretty quickly.
Just stick to a single control scheme, and it'll be second nature in no time! o7
great video!!
I have a question!!!!
Why every station charge me with 15% fee for thargout bounty vauchers??????? i can`t find information about this. In the begining of my thargoid fights averything was fine and in some moment they charge me with this fee.
Ughh I don't know how to answer that. Normally that's just on fleet carriers but never heard it happening on regular stations

Is there a similar guide to cold orbiting on controller? Thanks in advance
You can do the same thing as show on the video. Just use my keys for reference. For me W is forward and just use whatever is on ur controller binds.
I never knew this method of flying was called cold orbiting, I prefer kiting, but I guess it fits the scenario. Anyhow this is what I've been doing against pirates in faster ships vs my FC or conda.

Hi!
I’m alway running in that one freaking problem: he matches my orbit!! I go backwards and down, the first 30 seconds are perfect, but then he comes super close to me and matches my orbit and idk how to counter that…
You have to pay attention to the distance whenever you see him getting too close go backwards the moment you think you're in danger or add sideways trust as well that might counteract the movement. Also if you need extra breakdowns feel free to join NEWP's discord i'm always active there
I think I've been doing it wrong. I always use "thrusters" for up down, side to side but my forward and back is with "throttle." Am I to understand you don't use throttle in combat but only just thrusters?
No you haven't been doing it wrong, forward and reverse throttle are used to control range. If you look at the overlay Heli uses, W is forward "throttle" which is used to close range to the interceptor and S is reverse "throttle" which is used to increase distance from the interceptor (see from 4:30 where we explain this).

Is it the voice ?
@@mariemonroe553 No, it's the haircut
@@N3ukenInD3K3uken Damn a fine haircut indeed
I thought cold orbit was a brand of gum...
Problem is, in the real fight, swarm just keeps spamming missiles and drains your hull within seconds no matter what you do. So you cant just focus on interceptor like you are doing here. It just doesnt work like that.
Well the video does say to use the flak launcher to deal with the swarm. Thats how every textbook fight is performed.
@@mariemonroe553 Its a very impossible thing to do to reliably fight a year 3000 swarm by using year 1940-tech flak gun.
@@bronzejourney5784 im sure you can do it with practice. Check orodruins textbook cyclops kill he explains pretty well
Against a Cyclops, I just ignore the swarm (Take some spare HRP!)
And against bigger targets - I'll take some wingmates with me to use as meat-shields 😉
Those are thermo vent lasers that are icing the cockpit?
_"Keep it simple"_ 🤣 easy to say
Now try that using an xbox one controller! Mouse control is so much finer that fixed weapons with the controller are practically useless!
Not true , one of the best achievements in AX were done with a controller. Of course its not as easy to aim as it is with mouse but its proven to be very viable.
One of the finer examples : ruclips.net/video/qwdwN_w57Os/видео.html
I'm sure with practice you'll get it down don't you worry :D
@@mariemonroe553 Sorry... I don't think the same that you. Its fine in keyboards, but very much difficult in pads and HOTAS.
The keyboard intro pure movements... not parasitism move when you adjust the target with the stick. If you click on 2 keys, you obtain 45⁰ pure movement... and the mouse will be the perfect fine tune for you mainten the target into the sight. Only in PC with adjust extrem in "S" can you obtain something very similar.
In console (my case), this not possible. Its very hard.
In other case... the cold orbit is fine for not receive damage, but is very slow for my flights/combat style.
Thanks for you video, it's 10/10 and fligt safe. 😉👍
