    I know this is an old video, but: I am a returning player and this is the best guide I've found on cold orbiting so far. back when I used to hunt regularly, I developed an imperfect cold orbiting technique and I could never figure out how to avoid orbit decay. the tip to keep the thargoid trail on one side only and strafe in the opposite direction is insanely helpful. will be joining the good fight once again!

The trickiest things I deal with are pulsar boosts and blowing up asteroids. I might get around to Thargoid combat... in a year.

      Keyboard and mouse is the suggested optimal control scheme for what you are seeing here. Getting fine grained control for accuracy with a stick requires high grade hardware, and even then it doesn't quite stack up to kbm. You can do it with a bit of practice 🙂

      @@vengefire The OP says they use stick and throttle for this, which takes either a $1K hotas setup, smoothing software outside the game, or was a lie. look at the smoothness of the aiming at all times. You cant do that with a t16k joystick. Its input is physically not possible.

      @@vengefire Sorry for the late response, I didn't see your reply until just :O.
      The two biggest problems I have with 'control' using a kb and mouse are throttle manipulation and dealing with FA OFF. In combat I rely on my thrusters to manoeuvre as I can't easily get to where I have set up the throttle increments and with FA OFF I end up wildly swinging about as I can't re-centre accurately after an input. Neither of these are the fault of the input devices themselves, I realise but when you're nearing retirement age and your joints are getting stiff then getting gud is all the harder :chuckles:.

    • @Sanghelias

    The best guide to cold orbiting. Thanks Kate.
    I really don't think you need to use 2 vectors for cold orbiting, I orbit with the goids trail off to my right, i use right thrusters, you end up in a swinging orbit with the goid, you get its momentum along with it, the only time i use downward thrust is if i begin to stall, you cant stall in front of the goid anything more than a cyclops and you will take huge damage in a shieldless build. I really tried using both down/right thrusters and i just couldn't steady my aim, so maybe its a me issue, i'm not at your skill level ether.

You told we need to move 90 degrees perpendicular to the trail of the thargoid. but according to the diagram. then you shouldn't be able to see the petals (heart) of the goid. but when you are cold orbiting all i see is goid is facing you. which means goid is able to move in directions they are not facing.

    Seen a few of your videos now . Well presented and explained .
    Also has made me realise just how much is involved in AX combat !!
    I have yet to get to this . Im planning on a Krait 2 as that seems to be a popular ship . I have,a type 10 but Im not sure its fast enough or maneuverable enough . I use it for AFK massacre missions. It seems perfect for that ( made couple of billion in credits ) . I use a Vulture for CZ massacre missions.
    That is the extent of my combat .
    This is interesting , I plan on doing scouts at first .
    Think I would struggle with the advanced stuff . Plus Im on console so the controller is not as flexible for use in weapon fire groups .
    My initial problem here would be having gauss cannons on separate fire buttons and then be able to still launch heatsinks . A lot of fire group switching which is the limitation when on console , as Ive found .

    Gotta say as someone that currently does exclusively cargo and exploration, but is thinking of giving AX a try, this is all WAY more complicated than I thought itd be, but also looks really cool... but I think I should probably get more practice at just flying under thrusters first, since I spend almost all of my time in supercruise other than take off and landing (although have taken up mining recently, so maybe those asteroid belts could provide a good training area for manuvering)

    • @minighost244

      this comment is a bit old, but if you're still playing: I do suggest ship combat first, even if you fly exclusive FA-on. let yourself get used to real-space flying before taking on FA-off combat. very well worth the effort, I'd say thargoid combat is the most fun I've had a long, long time.
      tip: the cobra MK3 is a great beginner's ship that can do everything. fit a couple lasers and take some combat missions!
      but, hey, don't worry about missing it if you're not into combat. ED has something for everyone, but you don't **have** to do everything. most important is to have fun!

    Thank you. The only issue I have is I use an xbox style controller instead of a Hotas on PC, while up/down & lateral thrust is ok I have trouble with forwards/backwards thrust. When I'm cold orbiting I'm forced to use main throttle to maintain distance but this often causes the orbiting to become too erratic. The result being poor aiming at the hearts. I don't really want to use a shield tank, any advice? (My anti-xeno ship is a shieldless Cutter).

  • @Snubbs
    @Snubbs 3 года назад

    great video, but i've just got a quick question about the orbit part of cold orbiting: why do you need to use lateral thrusters? couldn't you just align yourself so the interceptor trail is always below you and just hold the downward thrusters? I ask because i'm having some real trouble thrusting in 3 directions at the same time while keeping my aim steady, and was wondering whether there was an easier way.

      In more technical terms, firing a beam laser at the same time draws more distributor power and can either result in less gauss firerate or more heat generated by the gauss (distributors are weird) and causing heat spiking. It's way better to just fire a split gauss firegroup and rely entirely on heatsinks while the beam assists outside of attack runs.

    • @BrotherSabathius
      @BrotherSabathius 4 года назад +1

      Always take the swarm down before attacking. The exception is if the Thargoid is enraged, in which case, reduce the swarm down to 10 or so, then go for the attack. Once a heart is killed, enrage ends and you can dispose of the remaining swarm. Note that the swarm does not care how cold you are, boost away, flip round in FA Off and shoot them down that way.

    You're amazing, so jealous of your skill! Something I'm trying to figure out is how your are setting your fire groups. Specifically, how you're firing your heatsinks without changing fire groups. It appeared... like you were manually firing heatsinks one at a time, one after the other thru 3 sets of heatsinks....but you didn't change fire groups. Can you explain how to do this?

    • @Citizen_Kate
      @Citizen_Kate  3 года назад

      there is a dedicated keybind for heatsinks under 'cooling' in the options :)

    Do you get 0% heat generation simply by not having shields turned on? Or does it require more specific setups?

      you use heatsinks, basically they last 10 seconds and when runs out you just use another one

      I use a HOTAS, specifically the VKB Gladiator NXT stick and TCWS throttle, but at the AXI there are members that use everytihng from Keyboard + Mouse to Xbox Controller :)
      It's all about practice and persistence - everyone is bad at FA OFF to begin with but in time it becomes second nature

      @@Citizen_Kate Agreed, I use FA off regularly to "slide" when its preferred. but my TM 16000 (3rd warranty so far) is giving out again, and the 3dPro is showing its age as well. Twitchy controls and no center make for difficult thruster control. I'm trying to hold out for Virpil / warthog to become availalbe again. VKB comparible to Virpil I presume.
