- Steve Clark performs "Wasted" (From On Through The Night Album) in 1983, Montreal. He dazzles the crowd as always and makes absolute awesomeness spew forth from his guitar.
I do not own this video clip. I merely found it and would love to share the Steve Clark Magic with everyone.
Steve was so underrated as a guitar player. He was the riffmaster. Today is Steve's birthday. Rest in Peace my friend.
Steve Clark was the Jimmy Page of the 1980s. No question about it. Everything to love about this guy!
He had Jimmy’s moves
I never knew that Steve could shred that fast!!
The VH1 story made it look like he couldn't shred like Phil Collen.
Yeah i know, total horseshit
he was a virtuoso even phil collen would tell u this.
He can kick the crap out of any guitar player to this day!
Lori Gibbs No crap! He was like Eddie Van Halen, he was classically trained and he understood the notes and the composition structure. Had he been less committed to alcohol, I believe he would’ve been far better than Eddie. RIP. 🎸🇬🇧
And Steve was just 23 at this time.....just imagine the talent at that young age.
30 years ago...but Steve always: The Prince of Hard Rock & Gibson. Forever! 👑 🎸💕🌹
classy Steve always makin bad ass riffs if only you were still alive to this day r.i.p. big fella rock on in the heavens
he was pretty quiet and reserved most all other times....except when he was on that stage. a TOTALLY different person then! Love it! :)
Steve died 21 years ago today, the Riff Master, Rock God, the reason so many of us wanted to play guitar, RIP SMC!!!
"The Riffmaster" would probably be using his rare Les Paul XR-1 here. Or his tobacco burst Standard. This is one of the last live gigs where "Steamin" used a fixed bridge before first using a Floyd, before settling with a Kahler which he had fitted to all his Gibson's that had tremolos. Steve was a classically trained guitarist, grew up playing classical guitar, so he was extremely well educated in that sense. His loss remains incalculable, his lyrical and musical gifts have enabled Leppard to tour off the back overwhelmingly of what he largely gifted the band and the world. As Viv noted in 2019 "90% of what we play Steve left us". He 'could' play very fast, it depended on the song. But he was a player, the really great gifted players bleed through their guitar, and Steve had that inane gift of playing in a way that just magically blended his own style, and the style of his idol Jimmy Page. Always strapped SO low like his idol, the exception being when he played his 18 string Razors. If anyone ever see's Tesla's Frank Hannon when the song they wrote and dedicated to Steve ["Song and Emotion"] when Frank finishes his main solo he points to the sky, as in he is pointing to the heavens to Steve, Steve and he became good friends, Steve surprised Hannon one day and gifted him a red SG. That was Steve, humble, extremely shy, but bi-polar, and a depressed alcoholic. So tragic.
Here he's using most likely a Boss delay pedal, he did use Boss, but also different pedals. Sadly the magnificent website named "Steve Clark In Loving Memory" is no longer up. The person that owned it was so in awe of Steve he had pretty much ALL the specs-details of Steve's rig from the very early days up until he passed, his last performance with Leppard was in San Remo..For me personally the most beautiful guitar he has was the mid 1980's LP Custom, creme, triple pick ups [PAFs], his earlier LP's had 'Dirty Finger' pick ups, and the creme LP Custom had a Kahler attached. It went for nearly 1 million at public auction to a private collector. Sveral people have gone on to replicate this beautiful guitar, there's videos of these examples if people want to find them. But Steve's XR-1 is epic, the XR came in 3 different versions, XR1--3. To find one today would be like finding a needle in the proverbial haystack.
Definitely a great show if his talent. Will never be forgotten!!
this was awesome I love Steve's rockin guitar solo!!!!!!!!!!!!
There was no one better than Steve. He was the best and always will be.
Steve came up with the most inovative guitar riffs , he was a Master of the guitfiddle !!!!!!
And magic you’ve shown us. Steve was a fantastic rock guitarist. Natural defined his ability and energy. 🎸 🇬🇧 🎵
Joes scream at the beginning was great!

I never knew Randy Rhoads played for Def Leppard.
Steve is a legend
😂
He never did. He played for Quit Riot. He formed Quit Riot.
Zane Roote ] That was Quite Riot
😂😂😂 Steve and randy are literally my two favorite guitarists. Funny in this live performance Steve sounds just like randy and I fucking love it!
also did epics like overture from on through the night plus switch 625 is imo a incredible epic(nothing but scales). the song On Through the Night is pretty crazy too. Fast triplet riffs plus a bad ass bridge that i damn wish i could play on guitar
MUITO BOM MEU GUITARRISTA FAVORITO.
O meu tbm, ele era magnífico em todos os sentidos
this makes steve look great, And HOT!!!!!!!!!
true - one of guitar god .
Steve knew as much about guitars as Eddie Van Halen. No telling what he would’ve accomplished had he lived longer than age 30.
Steve is showing off!
Badass. All day, everyday.
The Master of the Riffs forever....
He used. Les paul with a floyd rose. Totally custom shop only.
Recuerdo en el Charleston , el Luis R o el Cats en Monterrey N L Tocar ese Cover y Siempre era un éxito Bien Aplaudido por el Publico Siempre Cerrábamos con esta Excelente Canción Buenos Recuerdos
Steve was NOT sloppy..... Steve was technically proficient and this video is just one piece of that evidence. A classically trained musician (which is what Steve Clark was) is taught how to avoid being sloppy. I've no idea why some of you subscribe to this myth. Where is the evidence? If you are not a musician and don't fully understand the fundamentals of music then please don't bother to reply... if you are a (decent) musician you should know better than to believe Joe Elliott's daft comments.
ClarkOVision, THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT!!!!
Fuck joe elliot. He played guitar as much as lars ulrich. Wth does he know lol
This is another example that pisses me off over imo the most over hyped and music industry corporate publicised guitarist in Slash. Steve was playing vertically back here in what 81 and 83. Steve was a genuine rock star who was the complete package, that Leppard have failed to deliver anything remotely basic since his passing evidence of this. He is a true rock star with serious talent. Page he idolised for the same reasons, he ended up completing what Page was able to do.
Steve Clark was a real shredder & amazing guitarist.Even their pop stuff with Steve was cool.Too big of shoes for Vivian Campbell to fill.Def Leopard were never the same without Steam in Steve Clark.R.I.P brother
I loved this so much. Fucking EPIC
I agree, sloppy isn't quite the right word. You can tell in his solo's (especially in Love Bites) He wasn't known for his technicality, but for his true emoting. The reason why he sounds "sloppy" is because his guitar was strung so damn low xD. R.I.P Steve.
That was insane.
They called Jimmy Page sloppy and for most of his career he never missed a note. Same with Ace Frehley. Sloppy is a term invented by jealous 12 year olds who are just picking up a guitar and are intimidated by the skill of men like Clark.
😍
@knoxpages Yes, I agree with you. Steve's compositional skills and riffs were very Page-like.
@cidman2001 Man, you are awesome for simply being there and watching this obliteration!
Steve wasn't wasted! Steven was known for drinking after the show, never before a performance.
smart man indeed.
Wasted is the name of the song.
Lo MÁS!
Still trying to learn solo
Wow
Vai and Malmteen are both ungodly guitarists but have they been able to string together some highly memorable notes together as "Bringing on the Heartache"?
Maybe not like Stairway to Heaven but they did do epics like Die Hard the Hunter, Gods of War and White Lightning.
James Caddy Steve Clark was a better player than jimmy page.
Die Hard The Hunter > Stairway To Heaven
9lamers you wish. Ever since i listened to the demos and eps I followed them, even tho some of their albums sucked Popsicles, still Steve is like an unknown father guitarist to me
@pachor2 Congratulations, I got him on for you. Go have a look. Also how come your comment got flagged for spam?
The only problem is I can't turn it louder
Clark was 19 When they done On through the night. Rick Allen was 16
@Steve Clark returns to earth:
Your comment was SO OFFENSIVE and IGNORANT!!!
Steve was not "sloppy" at all! Perhaps you are referring to guitarists who played like robots at every concert. Steve wasn't a robot. He played with emotion and true talent, yet always remained humble.. He and his guitar were one with the song. He played FOR THE SONG, INSTEAD OF OTHER GUITARISTS IN BANDS WHO SHOWED OFF BECAUSE THEY ONLY CARED ABOUT THEIR "IMAGE" AND THEMSELVES!
Steve performed along with everybody and did his parts, he NEVER SHOWED OFF.
So basically, shut your ignorant and asinine mouth.
I wanted to add something about the comments regarding Steve as being "sloppy". This is widely misunderstood by non-musicians and even some musicians. It is not a criticism to regard someone as sloppy but rather just a description of their style. Lots of legendary and brilliant artists are sloppy, like The Who, The Foo Fighters, every punk-ish bands out there. The opposite would be a tight, neat, technically precise style like Vai, Malmsteen, or,,, Collen. A brilliant and complimentary balance
Riff in peace Steve. well said.
Steve was sloppy just means he wasn'T a technician and buffed a note sometime or just played notes out of no where which was really unusual but nonetheless sounded great. he was Jimmy page.
@knoxpages Def Leppard was the Led Zeppelin of the 1980s.
I know joe Elliott prides himself on growing on the English glam wave and leppard undoubtedly were one of the top nwobhm bands but the shit they keep pumping out year after year completely ignoring their formative years....THIS is def leppard
Clark was the Jimmy Page of the 80s! He was sloppy only in a strictly technical sense. He might not have been as buffed to a sheen as Collen, but a hell of a guitar player nonetheless who sold emotion with every note.
Def Leppard is not Def Leppard since Steve´s death.
i think they both are awesome..i really love steve but we dont have to forget that phil was his close friend, and def leppard wouldnt have been the same with one guitarrist...but it really anoys me that he was replaced by vivian, i mean it was necessary to be replaced..but at least for a guy that is the same good as him! i hate vivians style, and the songs became ...good..they were awesome and incredible and then they were just good
Can't hardly See Them , very Poor Photography.
how def leppard never had an epic song like stairway to heaven
Because of the band they were. They may have... If Steve was alive...
sloppy? I dont hear people call jimmy hendrix sloppy I mean, even hendrix never played the a song the same way twice
@Bigschwang Id rather listen too clark then too super technical stuff like steve vai which is just plain boring..... as hell
Sloppy describing steve is total bs. Listen to switch or gods of war. Or just on through the night.
Mehhh. Back in the 80's by the time you were 16 you were able to play individual solos like this. Not too impressive for the time period. Steve's strength was his song writing, extremely talented.
You’re obviously not a guitarist (or not a very good one). Although he’s one of my fave players, Page was indeed a sloppy guitarist, and saying “for most of his career never missed a note” is absurd.
Maybe you never heard any Zep bootleg recordings from the late 70s (particularly when he was strung out on heroin). I’ve heard lots, and “sloppy” would be a euphemism. He even said his playing in TSRtS (the movie) was “full of howling guitar mistakes.”
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
steve is a guitarist idiot and he is really good at guitar ur jealous cause u probs play guitar and suck at it and hes better at guitar so u could shutup and go to hell
Def Leppard died with him. Nothing but over polished, over produced, sterilized pop drivel from them since Adrenalize, the last record he had any influence on. Although he did not play on the final version of Adrenalize, his spirit and riffs were still there, IMO. Not so, for the last 28 years. As great a player as Vivian is, he can't hold a candle to the riff/melody machine that the great Steve Clark was. R.I.P. Steve. You are dearly missed.
sloppy means u drink to much...... steve was kinda sloppy
Of course he would've missed notes if he was on heroin.
20 years you passed away , I miss you, great icon , the white lightning, RIP STEVE
@knoxpages Yes, I agree with you. Steve's compositional skills and riffs were very Page-like.
