    W&N's gamboge appears to be more of a quinacridone gold hue, especially since it contains PY 150. This is why it's so important to learn pigments instead of relying on color name only (since many brands use unconventional names). It's funny.. You and another commenter were talking about your preference for the W&N brand, whereas I generally avoided it due to all the negative reviews and artists who used to love it, then switched. There's something for everyone, and luckily for us, we can pick and choose from each! Nice demo illustrating the importance of pigment choice.

      Aww thank you for watching the video, I agree with you about knowing the pigment numbers. In the next video I’m uploading tomorrow, I say all the pigment numbers and going forward, I’ll be doing that in future. I definitely need to get more to grips with that information 😊.
      I do love my W&N set and I think it’s because I’ve used them the most, I definitely feel that I have more control with them than the other brands. However, these videos have been a really good exercise for me and I’m becoming used to the other brands, especially the Sennelier set. I’m currently doing a painting with them and I’m really starting to like them a lot. I’m hoping to build a large palette with all my preferred paints and going through the process of making these comparison videos, will definitely help with that.

      @@TammyNewmanArt sometimes even if they contain the very same pigment, they still end up looking rather different (just look at all those colors who are listed as PBr7). It depends on how they treated the pigment in the process and other factors, that’s what I was told

      @TammyNewmanArt  3 года назад +2

      Yes I actually didn’t know that until I started my comparison videos lol. I was very confused until people told me in the comments, that’s why I love people commenting - I learn so much 😊😊😊

    Tammy, I'm finding your comparison videos invaluable (including the one of your earliest novice videos in which you compare Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton (and lost some footage but posted any way). Last week I lost a beloved and much used set of Maimeriblu half pans that were a gift from my mother during a trip to Italy that she gave me for a graduation present. I do have other watercolors in tubes (WN), and use both the tubes and the pans, so I've been looking at pan set replacement options, and was at a loss as to what it would make sense purchase. Your videos are particularly helpful because I want to replace my lost box of pans with one I've not used before-- I'm trusting that my Maimeri box will show up and if it does, I want to have a box to travel with so I can keep the Maimeri at home.
    Also, if you've not yet done so and want to pursue some other comparisons, I would be interested to see some videos on different qualities of brushes and what they are good for.
    Thank you and best wishes

    Nice demo. I enjoy both brands. It’s important to do the experimenting that you have demonstrated to see what the colours do which then helps you decide how to use them to your advantage.

    Hi Tammy, I'm new to watercolor and would like to know if you could mix W&N with DS.

    • @TammyNewmanArt
      @TammyNewmanArt  3 года назад +2

      Hi Gloria, I think it’s okay to mix any paints however I’m not an expert. I would do a bit of online research. All I would say is that both W&N and DS are expensive paints, so if your new to watercolour then it maybe worth looking into a good student range.
      Good luck and I hope you get to love watercolour as much as I do 😊

      May I weigh in? It’s fine to mix brands, but I would caution against mixing the honey based brands like sennelier and Roman Szmal with the non honey based brands like WN DS Schmincke etc. The honey in the watercolours can make them behave differently, in large areas of wash they can be streaky if not handled carefully. That would be my take on it. I’m a paint junkie and have most of the brands ( usually bought in sales I should add! ) , I thought I was going mad when I couldn’t get a smooth strong chroma wash with my Sennelier, then I watched a professional artist say exactly the same thing and realised it wasn’t my fault or ignorance. I think the honey based paints are better suited to slow build glazing techniques where they truly can outshine other brands.

      Aww thanks you and that’s great advice! I didn’t even think of that and I’ve recently put a palette together that has my DS and Mission Gold in. So I’ll have to take one of them out, thank you so much as I would have made that mistake as well if you hadn’t said 😊.
      I’m terrible for buying paints as well lol and like you always get them in the sale or if my boyfriend or dad wants to know what I want for Christmas or birthdays, I’ll find something on sale and they’ll get it for me lol. That’s how I got my Cotman, W&N professional and Schmincke! Lol

      @@TammyNewmanArt can I ask, have you ever noticed any problems with loss of colour? I’m really intrigued by this because a couple of established artists use it no worries and , both Daler and WN quote it’s got good light fastness...yet it gets a terrible press. Charles Evans uses it as his only red. And it does seem to be a beautiful shade. I’d love to know your take on this?

      @@suzisandpiper tbh no I’ve not but I’m not an expert by any means and I know what you mean. I love the tone of it and like I said, I think it’s great for mixing skin tones - I usually mix it with yellow ochre

      @@TammyNewmanArt oh no! People can be so rude can’t they? From what I’ve read I get the impression it may depend on how the paint makers handle the process. I have the daler rowney PR83 as it comes as standard in their sets, and had it swatched out for years and it’s as powerful as ever...I think I’m going to try some tests like the other lady it would be good to know. Aw thank you for watching the video. I know it’s a mix with PY150 but I can’t remember what the other pigment is. Yesterday I did a painting where I mixed transparent yellow PY150 with Burnt Sienna and it produced a very similar colour to the W&N New Gamboge
