- Cotman vs Professional- Winsor & Newton watercolour comparison and review(2018)
Hi Folks! Welcome to my channel! In today's video I am testing out and comparing Winsor and Newton's Cotman watercolour paints in pans with Winsor and Newtons professional watercolour paints in pans. In this review, I show you the packaging and layout of both sets, swatch out and mix colours and then demonstrate the two watercolour paints alongside each other in a quick speed paint. Hopefully I've managed to squeeze in the answers to most of the questions you may have had on these two watercolour sets, but if I've missed anything, please don't hesitate to leave a comment or question in the box below. I read and respond to all of your comments and really appreciate all your wonderful support. 😊

Perfect comparison. Both are outstanding paints, you can clearly see the professional line is more vibrant and smooth but the student line gives you really good colors for not so much money, therefore is a great option
Thank you so much Druido! 😊
Is it bad if I actually liked the Cotman version of the owl more 😂, idk but the reddish brown feathers on the cotman side just looks a lot more interesting to my eyes. I am a beginner at watercolor and those are some Insane skills you got there. Didn’t know it’s possible to get so real drawings with watercolor.
I keep on reading that the paints are tools and a good artist will be able to make the Cotmans work as well as the artists’ range. Now I’ve seen it. Awesome owl.
Aww Thank you! 😊😍
Every time I'm at the art store I ask myself if the more expensive paints are worth it. The only other thing I wish I could see is a lightfast test (maybe putting the paper in the window for a few weeks and seeing the fade on each?). Thanks so much for showing these differences!
Hi Rebecca! I have a new video going up today at 4PM GMT which might be helpful! 😉
@@SarahNewburyArt can't wait! I'll keep an eye out 😃
I bought professional Winsor Newton half pan watercolors, but there is room for more paints and I was thinking should I mix things up and order a few cotman half pans or fully keep it professional. This video helped me see that some of the colors look almost the same, but in some of them there is a huge difference, so thank you!
You are very welcome! 😊
Yes i think the earth tones are almost the same. It makes sense since those pigments are cheap af.
Great review... I used Cotman for many years and still do for teaching and my own field sketch palette. I tend to buy only tube colours now and re fill any pans. The 21ml tubes, are great value and seem better quality than some of the Chinese made Cotman pans... don't know why! Some of the pan colours I have bought felt gritty on the palette and you could feel the slight abrasive texture if you ran your finger over the colour when it had dried on the paper - I have not had that with the tubes. Though I mainly paint with artist watercolours now, I have no qualms about mix and matching colours I like. WN Professional artist grade watercolour are more finely milled and you do notice more transparency in some colours like yellow ochre compared to the Cotman. One I can't live without is Cotman Cerulean Hue - I find it better behaved than genuine PB35 Cerulean and way cheaper - It mixes better, doesn't flocculate and is great for skies or cool shadow - Mix it with a little Ultramarine and you have a perfect Cobalt blue hue or add a little light red and you have pale greys for cloud shadow. It's a permanent part of my colour palette and I wouldn't swap it for anything. I have tried other artist grade - phthalo based Cerulean hues but keep coming back to the Cotman.
Thank you Peter! Its really interesting to hear your thoughts on tubes vs pans- I have recently read that the formulation of pans and tubes is different and each has its pros and cons - I may steer towards refilling the pans with tube paint as I use these up- I also really appreciate the advice re the Cotman Cerulean Hue- will definitely try that out!
I agree with you as I also prefer cotman tubes
Thanks so much for this comparison! I just bought the Cotman set of 45. :) I was a reading lot of negativity on the Cotman set on Reddit and was doubting my purchase but your amazing owl shows me its potential. A great artist can always make it work! Also I really like the palette that comes with it and plan to use it in the long term haha.
I have been in watercolors since 2009 after spending over 20 years in Acrylics and about 6 years in Oils (which was my starting point back in late 1970's)... Ans since 2009 I have been a fan of Winsor and Newton art supplies... I started with the Cotman series and then move to the Professional ones; but still use Cotman as my prefer one for journals watercolors. And your review is actually splendid...
Thank you so much Walter!
Lol.. someone as good as yourself could use dirt and the painting would come out great. For those of us that are NOT artists.... either will work just fine. Thx.
😂 Very kind of you to say! 😊
the best comparison!! great clip!!
Thank you! So glad you liked it! 😊
Sometimes a ‘Hue’ can be used when they replace toxic pigments, eg:cadmium
Thank you for the info! 😊
Thanks for spending the time to paint such a beautiful owl for the sake of the comparison. I haven’t used watercolors since grade school so I’m excited to do it again but with much higher quality materials and more experience with painting (oil and acrylic).
Thank you Jon! Enjoy your watercolour painting 😊
Thank you--I was actually looking for a good student set to learn with, and you sold me on the Cotman!
Hey Dragon! Thank you for watching- have fun with the Cotman, they're a good set 😊
As someone who is a beginner, I find these videos very helpful but jumping in at the deep end can be a good way of starting. Experiment, make mistakes, and then do it again. I thought this was a good video for someone at my level.
Great review! I’ve had a small cotman set for years that I only recently started getting good use out of so I was curious how the professional set compared. I’m a digital artist but I do a lot of ink and watercolor sketches, and while the professional set looks fantastic I don’t think the price is justified for loose sketching! The cotman set is great for throwing a splash of color onto something.
Thank you! I would love to try digital art, even just as a way to sketch out ideas but I struggle to get my head around how it all works! Hats off to you! 😊🌺
Thank you! I’m getting back into watercolors again and sorting through the different grades of paint can be a headache. This helped immensely! ❤️
So glad to have helped! 😊🌸
I’m grateful to see the comparison here Sarah. I’m working my way through the New Botanical Painting book, and have found that starting for practice on the XL paper is somewhat frustrating. I’ll finish this pad for practice and warm up only. It felt as though the paper was fighting me. But then when I used cotton papers for the final piece (Fabriano and Strathmore) painting was like a delicious breeze, lol. Paper most certainly makes a big difference. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Rita! I agree, there's nothing quite like painting on cotton paper! 😊
Many thanks, Sarah, for a clear and unbiased review and comparison - for your comment about the paper, too. :)
Do NOT be sorry, you did a good job, did not talk too much and were really helpful. Thank you!
Thank you Mauro! 😊
Amazing owl! My bottom line are Cotmans and Art Spectrum. Using water colour of lower quality than these 2 has frustrated me so much that painting became hard work.
Love the own!!!! So nice. and thank you for the very nice video. I think they put the yellow ochre in because a lot of people seem to use it. I guess they took the most popular ones.
A lot of beginners (me included) are a bit scared to use a certain colour if it really pops and you don't yet know where to put it.
I started with the Cotman series. I LOVE them. But I decided to slowly upgrade.
I use the tubes and make my own colour palette and it gives me the option to buy an empty mixing palette that is as big or small as I like.
I got my first Cotman water colours as a small pan palette with 12 colours. I then bought an empty tin to add pans into and bought some already filled pans and some empty ones to use the tubes for the empty ones.
Yesterday I bought my first 2 (tiny!) tubes of professional paint. I want to gather a good range of colours first , then use my new palette for the pro paints only.
Will keep using the Cotman for practise and also for anything that is just for fun. Although I don't plan on going into paid art, I'd use the pro series for anything I would make especially for someone.
I think i would buy the cadmiums instead of the hues, and maybe stick mostly with cotman otherwise. I noticed the professional looked creamier even when applying to paper which is nice but I doubt I would need a full set. Thank you for the recommendation of white gouache, very helpful tip!
I loved your comparison approach! Look forward to more of your paint studies and opinions.
Thank you! 😊🎨
The Art Hive - Thank you! I need to catch up on all your vids! Is there a WC paint you are curious about? I have a stock of several - happy to send you samples of anything I have - a mix of Holbein, M. Graham, QOR, Mission Gold, Daniel Smith, Old Holland, Lukas, Yarka - St. Petersburg/Jack Richeson palette.
I also have a cool Peerless Bonus Pak - more ink than true watercolor - but so fun.
Happy to share what I have!
Wow thats so kind of you! I have been curious about the QOR and M. Graham watercolours. 😊🎨
The Art Hive - Heck yes - happy to send you samples of what I have! I forgot to mention I have a few Sennelier wc’s as well.
Love the notion of sharing when I can......as there is nothing more satisfying than promoting/helping a fellow artist grow. Just ask you do the same when you are able - good karma!
Will you please direct me to where I should send the sample set?
I love the idea of sharing art supplies! Not sure the best way to send you an address though as don't want to share it everywhere? Ideas? 😊🎨
Thank you...you’ve soothe my anxiety about having the Cotman set. Plus, I do have a few better watercolor tubes that I can switch out.
You're welcome! I think the type of paper you use makes more difference than the paint and the Cotman paints are good so enjoy them 😊
That was a great comparison! Thank you so much! You are very talented! The owl was so lifelike!
Thank you, you are very kind! 😊
Love your painting, thanks for the video.
Thank you for the comparison and review. I'm a student and will now start with the Cotman
Glad it was helpful! Happy painting! 😊
So this is what a god tier set looks like. I've heard a lot of praises towards the cotman set, which I've learned later on was only their student set, so I couldn't imagine how much better the professional set was.
The Cotman Series is vegan, the professional is not. That is why for me personally only the Cotmans have moved into my art supplies. Thank you for the review!
Thank you Marvelenia! I've learned something new! 😊
Ty for this. I know that Cotton Paper is the only way to go and that being said Hats off for this Super Awesome comparison done on Paper that everyone can afford.
Thank you so much! 😊
Your review is spot on. I have used both but honestly i could not paint so well with the cotman series on that paper like you did❣️
Thank you so much Bushra! 😊
@@SarahNewburyArt It's a pleasure
Beginner here 🙋🏻♀️
Thank you for the video 🌸💜
You're so welcome Rosie! 😊
Little trick I've used for man years in removing tape, and or any sticker. At my art table I keep a Black n Decker heat gun in a custom holster. I use that heat gun mostly to remove my masking tape from my paintings.
Thank you so much for this comparison, very helpful indeed & nicely narrated.
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful!
Beautiful owl!!!! Great video full of info.
I use either depending on what work I'm doing. If I am painting an English landscape in March I'd use Cotman, If I was painting a summer or Mediterranean scene that had strong colour I'd use the artist quality. Very often I use both in the same work.
Thanks for your comment Syd! Tha's really interesting !🙂
Great comparison. I current have/use the Cotman set and haven't had an issues with them but seeing how much easier it is to work with the professional series, I'm sold. The owl painting is beautiful. Now, I'm curious if there's a big difference between tube liquid paint and these dry watercolor paints. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I have done a video fairly recently on the difference between pans and tubes - not sure if you've seen it or fancy a watch but in case you do, here's the link 😊 ruclips.net/video/JW8xmpEItmA/видео.html
Great comparison review and love the owl!
Thank you Sondra 😊
I just received the professional set today. Right away I was disappointed when doing the swatches. Prussian Blue & Viridian, are pastel instead of deep rich bright colors. Also as you mentioned there is no dark brown. Some of the paints have an almost gel like texture which I see a lot in lower end watercolors. A lot of the browns in this set have that gel like feel and I just couldn’t get the colors to show any depth. I have almost every brand watercolor there is and I have to say Schminke, Mission Gold, Danial Smith & White Nights are so much nicer rich and vibrant.
I get what you're saying!- I do have a few of the tubes of Winsor and Newton which I think seem to have richer pigments but I always end up going back to Schminke or my Mission Gold set. I love trying out new paints and its interesting to compare them- I haven't tried the white Nights yet but hopefully will get to try them out at some point. Its great to get other peoples opinions so thank you for commenting 😊🎨
Thank you for your reply! Love the owl, excellent review.
You're welcome 😊😍
What paints would you recommend for a beginner with a decent budget? I am torn between these two sets but if there are other companies you might suggest, I’d love some feedback!
@@chyanneperez1301 i got Schmincke watercolors for my Birthday. They are the best watercolors and, because they are a german brand, always high quality. They also overfill the tubes sometimes, that means you get more paint than you pay for. And the tin case the colours comes with has a lot of mixing areas. The also have a selection of over 140 colours, that is a lot. Schmincke watercolors have only one flaw, one of their manny yellow tones can't get mixed well whit one of their manny purple tones. It looks weird. But when do you even mix these colours in the first place? 🥴 ( I forgot the names of the colours )
Schminke is really expensive but you absolutely get what you pay for.
Winsor and Newton on the other hand is good for sketches and doodles, yknow stuff where you kinda waste paint. And they are super good for travelling and mostly designed for exactly that.
Great info, and love the owl!
Thanks DeeJay! 😍
I prefer the professional because it will last you longer and you'll get the most out of your money
I'm going to buy a new watercolor soon this video is so helpful
Thank you! Exciting buying new watercolours! Have fun 😊
Great comparison! Just what I was looking for.
Thank you.
Thank you Lili! Have a great week 😊
Great review, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Eva! 😊
I just bought a 14 PC Cottman field set of half pans. I can't afford W&N yet. I like them.
*sigh* I feel a little bit disappointed after watching the video. I am from Argentina, yesterday I payed for the cotman set $3000 pesos (or €48/£43) and now I get to know that they're the cheapest tool even though it's Winsor and Newton. They were expensive as hell if we talk about pesos, so I feel sad to be honest. And altough practice and hard work are heavier than tools lets say, I feel terrible; Shop sellers here believe that they are selling you the ultimate profesional set and they know nothing. Much less I do! Gosh. So much money inverted in something that is ment for students and there are Much better things. I feel so fooled. RATS!!
I will try my best with my set but still... gosh.
Hi Anahi! Don't feel sad, many artists use the cotman sets and love them! Yes, they are advertised here as student grade paints not professional- but that's not to say they aren't still really good. Get some good quality paper if you can that's 100% cotton -as this makes more of a difference ( in my opinion!), to your painting than the paints themselves. Use the cotman set you've got and enjoy them. You can always replace them with higher grade paints if you want to, once these have run out. 😀
I feel you man...by watching professionals review different products i get overwhelmed. The best thing you can do is have fun with them. I would say that even the professionals always learn about different supplies.
The name of the set doesn't matter. If you like the colours that's what matters
To be honest i have been painting with no brand ones for 2 years i think...i upgraded to Cotman and i love them. To be honest i prefer having a variety of colours so i will invest in the 45 set of Cotman watercolours which costs 60+ €... i wouldn't even imagine how much the professional ones cost.
I'm from Dominican Republic, and it's the same here, I expend $15 on a set of cheap brushes, and then found them in amazon for $5 or so, I guess they are also charging custom fees and stuff, but still... 😕
Don’t feel bad at all, the Cotman range is amazing. A lot of pro’s use cotman. They are as good and better than a lot of so called pro paints
I upgraded to Cotman last year. It’s a world apart from the cheaper paints. You’ll go far with Cotman.
Blimey. ABsolutely stunning. Subscribed. Can't miss out on your talent!
Thank you so much Abi! Enjoy the rest of your weekend 😊
I really can use both, in different type of works...of course the professional set it's more pigmented, but the Cotman set it's perfect for diary paints.
I totally agree! 😊
Very helpful thank you.
You're welcome!
What about the longevity of the paints?
By which I mean both the 'light fastness' (degradation by UV Light over time) and the longevity of the paints themselves.
I have an old set of professional half pans that must be thirty years old. They're still moist and I can still 'activate' them with a splash of water.
I'm wondering if the Cotman range would last as long...
if you do layering, use Cotman
Bigger differenfce whyat i imagined. i used cotman years ago and still have some artist range pans but slowly go very likely fully Schimcke Horodam works so much better for my personal needs.
Very interesting, thank you!
Thank you Bea! 😊
Love the comparisons. The cotman set looks more warm the professional is more cool toned.
Thank you Meka! 😊
Very helpful, thank you!
You are so welcome- Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful comparison!
Thank you so much! 🙂
Cotman tubes are very good, buy all the single pigment colors from cotman and some convenient mixed colors like indigo, Paynes gray and sap green 😊
Thank you Sabiha! Great advice 😊
@@SarahNewburyArt actually I missed writing I buy 😀
I'm happy if you take it as a advice 😊
I can't even afford to buy a cotman haha. Btw your painting looks so cool, its so beautiful
Thank you so much 😀
Woow fantastic work my dear friend. You are so talented stay connected 👏👏👏👏🌹🌹
Thank you so much 😀
That was wonderful! I will never get anything as beautiful as that made, but I know I will have fun using the paint. I did not know that you're supposed to tape down the paper. Maybe that's why I struggle so much with my paper buckling. So I will do that. Is that masking tape?
Thank you! The tape I use is either washi tape (in this painting) or scotch magic tape. Happy Painting! 😊
Fascinating! Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed it! Take care 😊
Love these paints! I just reviewed the tubes!
I have the 12 pan version of cotman and some colors separate after mixing
wow! the owl looks great
Thank you Kathy! 😊

Wow the owl is stunning! 🦉
Have you tried any water colour pencils before? I don’t really use watercolours but I find the pencils with brush pens work for me a lot easier because I am hopeless with a paint brush haha
Thanks! Only done a few bits with watercolour pencils but probably need to give them another try soon!
Nice side by side comparison ...
Thank you so much John! 😊
The right eye...it’s piercing my soul. There’s just something special about the right side.
I have the professional set but the quality these days isn't so good. I mainly use Jackson's artists paint from tubes now. Big tubes at reasonable prices
Hi Terence, that's really good to know- I will have to try them out, thank you 😊
Hello, do the professional version have more then 24 colors or only 24?
I’ve got the pro set, thank goodness for the £100-off offers they have sometimes. I also have a 12 set of Cotman from about 1999 and some are a little paler or a different shade eg sap green, but some shades seem nicer in some way or not very different. Just bought the Cotman 12 tube set so I’ll see how that goes, I’m having to be frugal right now.
Hi Carryl! I always look out for special offers as sometimes you need to experiment to find what you like best and it can get expensive. I think you'll enjoy the Cotman tube set as I've heard lots of good things about them. Happy holidays 😊
The cotman set is more ment for students therefore a wider range of pigments such as Indian Red. The professional set is for professionals who know colour theory and can make MOST of the color wheel with just the primary plus black, so everything else is like a convenient bonus. Most professionals don't need more then 12 premade colours to work with. They're just there for convenience.
Good point. 😊
Good I love it thank you soo much 😊
Thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊
You have done a nice job with your comparison, I would also offer that you are an exceptional artist and you can create a wonderful painting with any grade of paints! I have become a convert to DaVinci Paints from California. Great professional paints at very affordable prices! I am a true fan of Denise Soden “In Liquid Color” her Earth Friendly Palette is a wonderful selection for just about every subject matter. Have you ever tried DaVinci paints? Thank you for sharing your expertise and this lovely video! Have a lovely day.
Thank you, you are very kind! I would love to try Da Vinci watercolours- especially Denise's earth friendly palette but sadly, they aren't easy to get hold of here. I could order them direct from the Da Vinci website but I think delivery is quite expensive. Have a great week 😊
Thank you!
You're welcome!
They have a canson xl watercolor pad to use also
Thank you 🤩
You’re welcome 😊
If you want they sell the individual half pans to add to the set.
not to different from eachoter, i feel like the cotman just needs more layers to achieve that good bleed effect
Owls eye looks vibrant on both cotman and professional
Thank you 😊
I prefer more phthalo blue(PB15) to Winsor blue(PB15), it is intense and a little more transparent.
Just bought a cotman set for a friend's birthday 😂
Cotman is fine. It's not as vibrant but workable for sure. Stunning owl.
Thank you Jayce 😊
cotman are an excellent student grade wec
Great review! Thx
Have you tried the white nights paints? If you have, how do they compare to the professional W&N watercolors?
Hi! I have some but haven't used them yet so will have to let you know!
At 9:50 do you mean glycerine rather than gelatine?
Awesome video. Thank you so much 🙏 subscribed 😃 x
Thank you so much Becca! 💜
Would you consider the Colman’s be a good starter set for a somewhat beginner? If not what would your recommend?
HI Sherry! Thanks for your comment! Yes, I would say Cotman are pretty good for a beginner- I know quite a few people who use them- another set which you might consider is the White Nights watercolours 😊🎨

Very helpful Sarah. Do you stretch your paper?
I'm a complete novice and so far haven't mastered the art of stretching without the paper sticking to my board 🤔 I wondered what your take on it was.
(I'm currently using a gator board)
Thank you! I haven't stretched my paper before as typically I paint in my sketchbook or on blocks (where the paper edges are glued on all 4 sides). Washi tape seems to keep the paper flat enough on smaller pieces of artwork (A4 or less) and then I tape my paper down to a board, but if I was painting on larger pieces I would have to look into it!
@@SarahNewburyArt Thanks Sara, this old watercolour lark isn't as easy as it looks 😁
Honestly there isnt much difference apart from the professional set has more pigment. With the Cotman set they are completely fine and you can get the same pigment depending on how much water you use or how many layers you use.
Pigment in professional is different than in Cotmans. Looks the same but isn't and if you paint something in Cotmans and hang on your wall, after few months you will be disappointed how your colours look like.
Nice mate well done :)
Thank you! 😊
Ps...awesome Owl! Wow
Thank you Kellly! 😊

Thank you 😊
@@SarahNewburyArt no, thank you ! 😊 i appreciate the time, energy, effort and $$ you put into this to help other artists/creatives out!
It works fine if you apply Cotman in layers? it doesn´t wash off from the paper?
(sorry english is not my native language)
Hi Mel! As long as you let the paper dry completely in between layers it should be fine but it will also depend on the paper you are using. The better the paper, the easier it will be for you 😊
@@SarahNewburyArt Thank you so much!
Great Art
Thank you so much 😀😊
Much as I enjoy comparison videos, I can't help but think they're not really fair. I would like to see a comparison where the artist did not know what paint they were using. Like a 'blind test'
That's a great idea! 🙂
I liked better the colors in the Cotman version , they look kind of pastel which is what I´m looking for thanks for the video
So glad you found the video helpful Ari! 😊
