People were definitely shocked when Avi left but I’d say pretty unanimously people accepted Matt into the group with open arms. He’s amazing and a perfect fit with the group!
Avi left totally on his own accord. He is doing well I think in his solo career and all Pentaholics hope him nothing but the best. Matt had actually attended PTX concerts earlier and was already a fan when he interviewed. No one on earth can slam a bass part like Avi, but Matt brings a lot of different things to the group and has been a great addition.
Matt and Avi are very different, and I will always miss what Avi brought but Matt is special as well.

Matt has given PTX a shot of positivity, along with his obvious respect, talent and formal training. He is a joy on stage and behind the scenes.
my favorite thing about what i have noticed about Pentatonix as a group is there seems to be an overall love to showcase each other's talent - let each person get a lil smidge of a solo for the song :)

Avi went out on his own solo career. First guy to sing was Scott. The girl’s name is Kirstie. Nice reaction. It’s hard not to like Pentatonix.
After they knew Avi was leaving, there was an audition process for the new bass singer. Somewhere between several dozen and a few hundred singers apparently tried out. It got narrowed down to about 2 dozen singers, all of whom could perform the technical singing role, but Matt was finally picked because of his personality and how well he fit in with the other band members.
After 7 years of almost constant touring Avis mom got cancer and he needed to be home and he needed a quieter

I have a very unpopular opinion but when people ask about Matt I will say it....I prefer Matt over Avi. I'm grateful for Avi and appreciate his very talented self but I prefer Matt and if there is a song they recreated after Avi left I will always watch the one with Matt. ✌️❤️
Same. I feel the exact way. Matt also just fits better personality wise with the group. He injects them with youth and energy, especially during his first few years. He’s a natural on stage and tbh seems the most comfortable with crowd participation. Very charming and fun to watch.
Honestly, that’s not really an unpopular opinion. Most people I know much prefer Matt in tandem with PTX. Avi’s a freaking legend, but I believe going solo was absolutely the best move for him AND PTX.
They sound / blend /perform much better than they ever did back then (which is saying something, because they were already the Best of the best). The addition of Matt took them to a level most of us couldn’t even imagine.
Not unpopular at all. I'm right there with you. It does get annoying that people feel like they have to bring Avi up anytime someone says something about Matt. Avi has moved on; everyone else needs to as well.
I think Matt fits in the group better musically and functionally. Avi was worn out and depressed by all of the traveling. (I don't blame him; I would have been too. Have you see some of those cities they have been in? Total energy drains for a nature lover.) Matt is living his best life and is a joy to be around. Which guy would you rather travel with?

Yes, Matt had to go thru auditions for the group. Probably a few of them. He's such a great fit with the group...always happy, cheerful and just as goofy as the rest of the group in their off the stage time. And his singing is wonderful. His rendition of You're A Mean One Mr Grinch ( with PTX) is excellent and shows his versatility. There's lots of TikToks of the group and a PTX Weekly channel run by a lady named Courtney that is about 10 minutes of fun shorts, general goofiness and some tour shots.
Great reaction. Pentatonix videos get blocked a lot unfortunately but blurring the video, having a logo over it or pausing a lot can help. Hope one of these might be helpful to you. We have seen the videos a lot so we don’t mind not seeing it as it’s the reaction to them we come for. Look forward to seeing more 😊
Matt has such a beautiful voice! Him leading the vocals on the “You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch” song is a perfect song that shows off his range and talent! ❤️ This group just mesh together really well!
Everyone has favorites. Avi and Matt have totally different sounds which means they can be utilized in unique ways. I love both and am glad Avi is singing what he likes best now. He is so good. Matt brings a deep smooth soul sound that I love. And he’s a fun entertainer on stage. You can see his personality in “you’re a mean one mr. Grinch”. Enjoy and most reactors find unique ways around the production companies blocks. Fading the video, overlaying transparencies, and I wonder if links to the original and your words for people to go like it helps. Seems to for a few.
One thing of note: when the bass is singing lead, like Avi in “Hallelujah” and Matt in “Sound of Silence,” Scott Hoying sings bass. Yes, he is a phenomenal singer! He is a beast!!
I love Matt and he is wonderful and always in tune.
Matt is amazing, I love him. His personality is infectious and he meshes so well with the group. I still like Avi, but Matt won me over immediately. Plus I just got to see them live on Saturday and they are even more special live and in person. Matt especially got the crowd hyped and brought the audience to life.
I haven’t heard anyone complain about Matt, he’s amazing!!! I think everyone was shocked when Avi left, because he seemed irreplaceable. They are very different but both so incredible. Everyone welcomed Matt with open arms.
Thanks for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Matt has been bass for Pentatonix since October 2017. Not really so new. Anything recorded since October 2017 will have Matt and he is amazing.

I will be happy when fans stop thinking of Matt as a replacement for Avi. Matt stands strong with this group. He's no longer a replacement. He is delightfully the base for Pentatonix.

you mentioned that you liked the contrast between scott and mitch's voices. the prayer is about the best example for that. matt, the new guy i think has a richer singing voice than avi and avi had lower notes. avi's mom was ill and they toured so much he couldn't see her much so he made a hard decision. he helped find matt. they're just different; both good. try an old throwback of theirs, 'can't hold us' by mackelmore or an original, 'sing'.

I believe Sound Of Silence was 2019.
Pentatonix hired a talent company to do the first round of scouting. Those auditions were blind and done via tape; none of the basses knew what they were auditioning for. Ben Bram (whose name you will hear a lot as he helped Scott start the group, brought in Avi, helped bring in Kevin and has been arranging with the group from the start and is named on 2 of their Grammys) convinced Matt to audition. I think the number of hopefuls was around 60, but it's been a while since I read the articles so I could be off.
The talent scouts narrowed it down to under 10 - I think it was 8, but again, not positive anymore - who got called to a second round of auditions... with the group, at Scott's house. The group said any of those finalists could have worked but they chose Matt for his energy and personality.
Matt said he didn't hear anything after that audition for two months, when he got a call asking if he could relocate to LA within 2 weeks. He recorded his first song with the group the day after he landed, which was early September 2017.
He went on their 2017 Christmas tour with them as a "featured artist" (was also credited on that CD as a featured artist) as a trial run... he sang with them but left the stage when they did the banter between songs. They made him a full member in February 2018 when they renewed their contract with RCA.
Avi's departure was definitely shocking and heartbreaking. But I love the fact that he was instrumental in finding his replacement. And they didn't just throw Matt out instantly to everyone. They took a bit of time, released a couple of songs with just the 4 remaining members and then introduced him as a featured singer before they finally announced him becoming a member.
Dee Jay, Avi had absolutely nothing to do with finding Matt. Matt auditioned, along with 40 + others. Matt knew Ben Bram yet he still had to audition. At first Matt was not told for which band he was auditioning. He was later told and when he came to Scott's house for the final audition, Matt had learned all of the bass parts of Pentatonix songs. Matt won his place in the band based upon his talent, experience, work ethic, personality, etc. Avi was not involved. It is a false internet rumor which really should go away.

I’m so glad you are continuing with Pentatonix! It’s like that old Lay’s potato chip commercial in that you can’t stop at one. From what I’ve seen, it’s the visuals that trigger the copyright block on official videos. So obscuring the video by overlaying with text or logos or playing with opacity to make them nearly transparent can be a successful strategy to get the videos to post. Please do not worry about us being able to see the videos. We have seen each one dozens of times, and the only important viewer in this scenario is you. As long as you can see it and react, that’s what we’re here for! We can always go watch the original if needed. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I don’t want you to get frustrated. Peace from Ohio … Almosr forgot - Avi was always a treat (and still is) and I love what Matt brings to the party.
I would highly suggest going to one of their concerts. I went to 2 concerts in Chicago early on in their career. I realize now that I was a witness to generational genius. I am glad that I am alive, and was able to go to their concerts. They are a blessing to all of Music.

Their label is highly protective of their stuff. Yep Matt Sallee took Avi's role as bass. 1st vocalist Scott. Honestly it took some time for everyone to accept that Avi was leaving but Matt has been such a great fit that it lessened the blow. Kirstie (like thirsty) has so much power, think about how you can hear her cutting through with all these Alpha Male vocalists. Loved this! great reaction man. 2019 was when this came out. PTX listened to about 50 audition tapes and sang with about 8 or 9 basses. Matt came to the first practice session with Pentatonix having memorized the bass line of every single song they had ever performed, including the ones not written down. Job goes to Matt LOL.
Yes we were devastated when they announced Avi was leaving. Actually it was really classy. They were all on video together as a group and Avi himself announced it. Obviously they were all really bummed and stressed. We all were. I saw them on the Sing-off and knew from the first measure on their debut song Alien that they would win it. A couple episodes in after they came off stage and they do the brief interviews with the groups, Avi stated he wanted to do this for the rest of his life. So yeah, it was a huge devastating surprise. It wasn't a really long time after that, when Matt joined them. I know they did auditions. Don't know any details really, but he ended up with them and has filled the spot quite well. 2 different people, 2 different voices and qualities. I believe Avi could go lower, and he could do other things like percussion assistance to Kevin, as well as overtone singing(very well), and his voice quality is just phenomenal. Matt also has a good voice quality, and it really shows in this song. He has a good strong upper range as does Avi. I saw them live last Christmas time and they were just awesome. I think they're up for another Grammy for Evergreen...

Hi. Scott is the tall blonde and Matt was selected by Avi as his replacement. Matt is great but still miss Avi. I know that Avi was having family difficulties that he wanted to be present for and so he made the difficult decision to leave PTX. The first time I saw PTX was 2013 in Mobile, Alabama so he's been in my heart a long time.

So sorry about all the blocking. This is a hazard with Pentatonix. Many reactors use a filter or some writing over the video and that seems to help. There was a minor meltdown among Pentaholics when Avi Kaplan had to withdraw from the group. Matt had enormous shoes to fill and a dedicated fan base to win over, but he has done a masterful job of carving out his own unique spot. Many of us are still in love with Avi, and he has a thriving solo career that many PTX fans are also following. A favourite among many reactors is his "Change On The Rise." I love his solo version of "All Is Well," recorded by 7 Layers in a church in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on his last European tour. It's stunning. Really enjoying your reactions. 🙂

People seem to have pretty good luck getting around copyright if they make the video transparent and also put something over the video. For example, you can put the word "blocked" over it, you can put your page logo over it, anything like that. Remember, we have all seen the video. We come for your reaction, not the video.

I think you would like a group called walk off the earth. They use instruments but usually in a unique way or makeshift/nontraditional ones. They are also amazing singers and have a very creative style of making music

If you want to hear more of (first guy) Scott's lower register, I recommend The Prayer. So beautiful. He also takes the bass line whenever Matt/Avi is singing lead, amazing range. For more Matt lead, agree with the comments I've seen recommending Mr Grinch. Suits him perfectly.

When Avi left they looked long and hard for someone to replace him. They wanted to make sure they found someone who would get along well with the rest of the group.
You’ll find much of their stuff does cause copyright issues. You can get around it by putting a screen or else to disrupt the video. Pauses for your “comments” help too. Trust me, us pentaholics have seen the these videos so many times we k own them by heart. It’s about seeing your reaction to what you’re watching and hearing. 100s if covers and more more originals too. You can watch a song a day and busy for years. They all have their own channels as well. Either solo or in groups. They never disappoint and everything you listen to is better than the last you heard. No matter what song it is. They started on season three of the SingOff and won of course. You have all those you can see and catch up on a lot of their beginnings. Many live videos too and they sound just as good if not better.

Matt had been to Pentatonix concert before he auditioned for the band. He want know it was for PTX until until the numbers went down. He fits in so well that all 5 members were part of Matt's wedding in January 2022.

As you dive into the world of Pentatonix and encounter Pentaholics like us, you'll no doubt see a definite fan base for Avi Kaplan. Not only are Avi's vocal talents amazing, but as a founding member of Pentatonix, a great many fans have a special place in their heart for him.
In the beginning, a few fans may have unfairly resented Matt for taking Avi's place. This is actually normal human behavior and I take it with a grain of salt. Matt Sallee certainly had some big shoes to fill, but I think he has done so remarkably. He is truly an amazing singer AND an amazing person and is a perfect fit for this amazing group.
First off; Avi is an excellent bassist and knew how to use his gift to full potential as this initial 5 were, in a Pentatonix fans heart, the package meant for greatness. As i said before in a different video reaction, checking out their Sing-off experience shows more of the closeness and bonding created by this journey and I still emphasize checking it out . Speaking for myself, I fell in Love with the group as a whole, even though my most favorite is Kirstin. When Avi made his announcement, it was a tough one to take and created many questions of what now?

This seemed to be the direction they were headed, but actually were searching for Avi's replacement and then there was Matt. To me Matt fit right in, but to fully fit in completely would take some time and he is getting there..

Tip: Ask Pentaholics how to keep from getting blocked. They have a lot of suggestions that may work for you. Also, if you have to hide the video somewhat, no problem. I love Avi Kaplan, but like Matt as well... And the lead vocal is Scott.... You need to check out Down by Kevin Olsula, he is awesome on his solo stuff, and doesn't disappoint....
Avi left on good terms with plenty of notice. Yes we were all saddened at his leaving and still miss his presence , but Matt is an excellent replacement.

The new guy Matt is really good. I miss Avi. But Matt has done a good job of holding his own. My favorite is Kevin. All respect to him. I ride beat boxing and I couldn’t do it for 2 minutes much less a full song or a concert.

Never heard of these guys, & I'm not a fan of R&B or singing exclusive songs (i like rap w singing in it, but i need lyrics, that's what i listen to music for), but these guys are amazing. Definitely a fan, now. Not sure I'd buy their music, but I'll definitely look for it on RUclips when I'm in the mood. I'm listening on headphones, too, & i hear all of that u are talking about. Avi left because it is what was best for his mental health. Happy for all of them doing what makes them happy. I miss Avi, but Matt is also fantastic and a perfect fir for the group. Avi has solo work which is also great.
As acapella groups go Ptx has the most copyright barriers. Voiceplay and Home free don't cause near as much trouble.
Avi leaving was a shock, but he helped looking for his own replacement. Matt is totally different than Avi, but has his own unique sound, and he just fit into the group completely.

Hi, new subscriber here. So far I’ve watched your PTX reactions and your Chris Stapleton reactions and really enjoyed them. Now it’s time to introduce you to “the best of both worlds”: Home Free!! The world’s first Country A Capella group. A lot of reactors start with Man Of Constant Sorrow and most are hooked immediately. It’s brilliant. But since ’tis the season I’m going to suggest two of their Christmas songs as well. Their version of Do You Hear What I Hear is the best I’ve ever heard, it’s arranged by their beatboxer Adam Rupp and it’s amazing, especially the bass and vocal percussion. Second one is a Home Free original written by the bass Tim Foust called Full Of Cheer and it’s hilarious, both the lyrics and the video.
And remember it’s 100% A Capella, so all the “instruments” you hear are produced vocally.

I don't know all the details on Matt taking the place for Avi, but I do know that Avi played a big part in finding and interviewing Matt, and making the recommendation to the group. I was just starting down the PTX road as Avi was leaving, there is a video of him explaining what he was doing and why, basically his mom had cancer, and he felt he needed to be with her instead of traveling the world. I can't blame him for that, he did the right thing in my opinion, but my opinion does not matter.

Keep trying to manipulate the video with like a watermark...or sometimes people blur it or increase transparency. There are a multitude of ways to get them to post. We Pentaholics want to view your content, especially PTX reactions.

Avi hand picked matt to replace him! so I heard
This is now the definitive version of this song (my opinion), nothing comes close. It’s almost like Paul wrote this song with PTX in mind. Though Garfunkel is the Darkness, PTX really gave this song life and light.
PTX is now only an upgrade and also better than disturbed
Yeah, you HAVE to pause every so long and blur or so something with the video. It will get blocked due to copywrite otherwise..
