For the most fleeting of moments, the synapses in the patient's brain connect and surge with electricity generated in the axons, and a memory, so close, yet so far away, successfully breaks through the all-encompassing mist.

The sad part to me, is that this moment of lucidity might have been a fake memory because of the line "I'm afraid I'll wake and find, it was only in my mind." Since I've heard that Alzheimer's patients tend to create fake memories to try and fill the gaps.
This, this does bring a tear to me. Not only does it depicts the tale of love, but the personal nature of not believing what happened, happened. Because that experience was just unbelievable to the person.
It's like remembering the deepest moment of being in love with someone from your past through an actual daydream. It feels so good and you try as hard as you can to maintain that profound meaningful memory, only for the picture of you and them be forgotten and be literally be shredded apart by the horrible disease. 💔
