Steam Train Race, Train Ride Through Switch Backs, Cass Scenic Railroad Trains In West Virginia!

  • Shay steam locomotive races diesel at the top of the mountain at Spruce, West Virginia. Steam train ride up the steep grade to Spruce with 2 SWITCH BACKS! Cass Scenic Railroad steam trains in Cass, West Virginia. This video shows the ride up the steep mountain grade through both switch backs and it shows the ride back down. There was also a race between our shay steam train and the diesel train that came from Elkins, West Virginia. Both trains met at Spruce to have lunch, enjoy a live band and watch the train race. I have seen this train race a couple times and it is a lot of fun. These steam locomotives are the real thing! They burn coal and most of them actually worked on these steep mountain grades pulling the lumber out to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway mainline. However, the original tracks up these mountains were narrow gauge, unballasted and stick rail. We rented one of the restored company homes in the state owned town of Cass. We are returning here again for the 2020 rides and I wanted to post this since I had not done so yet. 160.455. Filmed July 15, 2017.

    My wife and I lived in Philippi, WV from 1967-1973 and taught at the college there. We have been on the Cass Scenic Railroad numerous time and have found it to be the best scenic railroad. We have pictures of the mill and shop before the fires. We currently live in Mesa, AZ and have not been back east in 20+ years. My late father-in-law was a conductor on the L&N, ran from DeCoursy to Corbin.

The most notable is a STEADY CAMERA, thank you, Steady start and stop of smooth pans, interesting details, smoke and scenery and wheels and rails and people. Well Jaw Tooth, i'm glad that you finally made it across the border to the mountains of West Virginia and some old-time railroading. I have ridden those Shays many times, serious whistles, and fished the Greenbrier alongside that parking lot as well. In the late 1990's I was part of a tree planting team in the upper Shavers Fork with Trout Unlimited. We traveled up the river in the Rail Diesel Car to plant red spruce seedlings and came back down on the tailgate of their Bronco roadrailer turning the vehicle around at Spruce, WV. What a ride. Nice to see the BL-2 Western Maryland.

    • @JawTooth
      @JawTooth  4 года назад

      Awesome! I knew West Virginia used the rails to put fish in the creeks but I didn't know that they used them to plant trees. That is cool!

    • @richarddrum9970
      @richarddrum9970 4 года назад

      Jaw Tooth....Well Trout unlimited had instituted a program to help shade the upper Shavers Fork to lower water temperatures and came upon a great number of red spruce seedlings, so we spent a couple days planting them in the upper watershed in the spring. It was a fun day but getting to Spruce via the roadrailer Bronco and back down to the station was the highlight of the day. I assume that you have seen the original layout of Spruce back in its heyday? Had a hotel.

    • @JawTooth
      @JawTooth  4 года назад

      Yes, I have seen that. I would have loved to have visited it back in the day and stayed at the hotel. That would have been awesome! Main street was the railroad. The dirt was built up after Spruce was gone and came from the connection to Cass Railroad.

    • @richarddrum9970
      @richarddrum9970 4 года назад

      Jaw Tooth..........it would have been a great place to visit. I guess at one time that line through Spruce continued to Durbin and onto Cass, Marlinton and eventually Hinton where it connected to the C&O. There is a great book out there “The Durban Route” which chronicles the history of that connection. Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them very much.

    Most of the locomotives at Cass worked for the lumber company that timbered those mountains. The State of WV bought the town and rail assets at the close of the lumber mill in July 1960. Cass Scenic Railroad State Park opened up in 1963. It is the largest collection of gear driven locomotives that still operate today.

    I'm surprised he can keep up his forward momentum as much as he's blowing that whistle!

    Those Shay's are a special kind of locomotive! Did you notice that even the tender is powered from the locomotive through the drive shaft driving the wheels of the locomotive? I don't know of any other steam tenders that had that unique feature! :D

      The Erie Railroad had a Triplex, which is basically the same. Some railroads hooked up boosters to the tender trucks to power them at low speed.

    Two diesels against one Shay, seems like a fair match.

      @@JawTooth We're riding the Durbin Rocket on 7/18. Cass 7/19, and Strasburg pretty much every day from 7/25 -8/1. Finishing up with the Northern Central Railway on 8/2. It's going to be wonderful.
