Cass Scenic Railroad, Cass West Virginia Steam Train, Mountain Train Ride With 2 Switchbacks, Part 1

- Shay Steam locomotive train ride up steep mountain grade through 2 railroad switchbacks to top of the mountain! Welcome to the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, West Virginia. The steam train does a run by so we can see the rusty rail before and the shiny rail after the train passes. Then we ride the train through the Cass railroad yard, through the switchbacks and to the 3rd highest point in West Virginia! Along the way we see miles of mountains and we refill the train with water. The train starts at the replica train station along the old Chesapeake And Ohio Railway and then takes the original Cass right of way. The original tracks were unballasted, smaller pound stick rail and standard gauge track. The end of the video shows a steam locomotive being refilled with water and we have the usual dog and slide show. We stayed 2 nights in an old company home in town that is owned by the state and we stayed one night in a nearby motel that has a view of the train station. The state owns the old company town and the railroad. This railroad is a must see for every railfan! Trains use 160.455. I filmed this on July 17, 2020 and I am going back again this June. This is Part 1 and Part 2 will show the train ride coming down the mountain and more runbys. Thanks for watching! Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

That whistle in the morning... it’s gotta be like the cannons on Constitution... so glad that freedom rings regularly!
I'm working on a video right now with cannons being fired. Lol
@@JawTooth *☺️
Same Freedom we get here in the UK as my local line has the same sound on their locomotives
A marvel of engineering for its day with all those gears spinning. What a sight. That uphill braking to stop for water was fantastic plus those unspoiled views of the valleys. At one time Milwaukee had 2 industrial spurs with switchbacks both now abandoned but the one has a 30ft section of trestle preserved that used to host FM switchers booming on the hill. Don't forget to take a moment to pay tribute to those who gave all so that we have the freedom including pursuing this hobby
What a great hobby it is, but greater are men and women that have and are serving.
Thanks Paul ! 😎👌👍
there was a day.. when steam reigned supreme.
What A Cool Little Trip
Thanks For Sharing Bro

Glad you enjoyed it

Geared steam locomotives it don't get any better than that should have brought your dog
This is the most amazing coolest video J. tooth had produced.
I am modeling coal mining operations in West Virginia in the fall of 1948 on an n scale 4x3 layout.
So this video here is by far my favorite video on RUclips! Excellent work. -from Buffalo
We rode this nearly 3 years ago. Loved every second of it, and the view from the top is spectacular.
This is probably my favorite train ride. The ride to the top has everything. We have done it twice when they had train races at the the top at Spruce. I filmed a steam train racing a diesel train
Thanks for the ride! Almost like being there. Can’t wait for part 2!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Luv that train ride up in the mountains
I love Cass!!! I have been there twice and and trying to figure out how to get there this year!!!!
Love the steam whistle, so much more pleasing than droning, moaning diesel air horns.
Couldn't agree more!
This video is pretty cool. It was if we were riding on the train. So cool. Beautiful scenery and wonderful sound.
Pretty good video at Cass Scenic Railroad.
Sweet
As a resident of West "By God'" Virginia, I have rode this train on several occasions. I loved the video and wanted to tell you that I truly appreciate you posting this.
Two things that stood out with your video. One, there wasn't a whole lot of background music or other non-essential distractions added into your video, I cannot express how much I appreciate that.
Secondly, I truly appreciate the fact that you brought the kids along and offered them explanations to their questions. It is always heart warming to see families being together and enjoying a day together.
Thanks again, glad you could all enjoy the day having a great time and enjoying the clean mountain air!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! We are making plans to revisit again next month
@@JawTooth It's always a great time at Cass. You should rent the caboose and stay the night up top. It is truly a great experience.
Thanks for your kind remarks.😎👌👍
Love steam engines, saw them in operation on a main line railroad when I was a small boy. It was love at first sight.
Awesome!
On my bucket list to ride when we’re up North.
Wow that is so cool. Will have to put that on my bucket list for sure
9% grades! That's insane!
Hello from the UK. I love this video; Great scenery and we get to hear the commentary in real time.
1. It is always interesting to see the stuff at the lineside on preserved railways, so much historic rolling stock in various stages of repair/decay.
2. I have never seen a "switch back" before and so now I understand why the loco was pushing from the front. Look forward to the ride back down!
Awesome, thank you! I am working on that video now
Welcome to west Virginia
Awesome! I LOVE that whistle at the beginning of the vid
So do I!
"We just got off the phone",..Im dyin!! 🤣🤣🤣
What was it like to be on the train rather than the guy standing by recording it from the ground this time? 😁
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL Scenery!
That locomotive is quite impressive.Amazing that it handles that grade so well.Great video Son!
It sure is!
Very interesting ! Great view also......good job Jawtooth !
Many thanks!
Awesome place Jawtooth! I'm going to have to visit there someday! Thanks for sharing!
You should!
Sitting at a table with my bible and coffee, hearing that whistle would just make my day.
Interesting crane rail car.
That is the coolest scenic railroad I've ever seen, gonna put that on my bucket list, if I can stop working so much I'd love to go spend a day there.
Really like the Shay engine, and all the other vintage equipment was really neat, so glad people preserve this stuff !!
Great video !! 👍 looking forward to part 2. 👍 Shine up those rails son!
Shine those rails, Roger That ! 😎👌👍
I remember that train that's the second time you made that trip to my knowledge job well done keep up the good work once again an A+ job well done keep up the good work a steam engine reminds me of the TV series Wild Wild West I'm sure you seen a couple of times maybe more that's what that reminds me of job well done keep up the good work you and your son work very well together please keep up the good work thank you
Thank you very much! I have more videos of Cass to post. I'm going back in 4 weeks
Cass West Virginia is one of my favorite places on Earth!
5:25 - Shay 5 was built in 1905 and has spent its entire life on the same property under four operators - West Virginia Pulp and Paper, Mower Lumber Company, Midwest Raleigh, and the State of West Virginia (Cass Scenic RR).
Thanks for your imfo. 😎👌👍
yes whistle to high for kids , moms remember to take ear protectors ,and sunglasses for embers . ha ha always something .
And a hat if you ride in the open car when it is attached. the bigger the brim, the less chance of a cinder doing something.
Wonderful. Thanks for the video beautiful site
Glad you enjoyed it
Fabulous scenery! Loved the video. Very unique engine configuration. I assume it’s geared down to handle the steep grades. Thanks for taking us along. Cass is now on our sight seeing list.
Love it! 😁
Yay! Thank you!
How interesting. When she mentioned the cars where originally transport cars to transport logs to the saw mills , I imagined The show the Walton’s . Remember they were in West Virginia and they owned a saw mill. I imagined a train like this transporting logs to that area to cut at the mill .
Those were the days, logging for the mills !😎👌👍
Thank you for that, will never get to ride this train myself, so I'm glad you did it for me
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@JawTooth Roll on part 2, start the video son lol
Nice train ride up the mountain , cool sounding train whistle and a very interesting drive system on the loco ( I don't think I have seen a drive system like that before ) .
Yes. Geared locomotives (Heisler, Shay, Climax) aren't fast but they have superior traction and maneuverability on the rough, steep, curvy mountain railroads. Just what you need for logging and mining operations.
@@johncombs2990 cool , thanks
@@thomasfletcher4765 Glad to be of help. I like to give information to people.

Sometimes I see rust on my brake rotors in the morning... it’s just not the same as on the rails...
Was hoping one of those other railfans filming would yell out, hey jawtooth!!😁😁 awesome video tooth.
I liked that Jaw Tooth was filming rail fans filming Jaw Tooth! Ha ha ha.
Great train ride. Thanks. Chris from England.
Many thanks!
I bet they have to machine their own parts to maintain that beauty :) I like the spirit and tenacity of the folks who keep these scenic RRs running. Very cool. I hope the train is open in June. Some RR's remain closed - probably lost a lot of money last year.
They are open. I am going back in June
@@JawTooth Cool :)

Your on the right channel for whats on your bucket list ! 😎👌👍
A beautiful example of an external combustion engine. After riding the Cass, I realized how and why the phrase "internal combustion engine" came to be.
I took a ride on that train in the mid 90’s …neat hearing that gorgeous whistle echoing in the mountain!
👍👍👍
Awesome Video
👍👍🇮🇳👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Very cool!
I'm going back in June
@@JawTooth I'd make that trip. Thats a cool place!
Wow what a cool train and piece of American history... hopefully one day I can take a ride on that train. I used to go visit my grandparents every summer in the Smoky Mountains and the views from that train kinda remind me of it...very scenic.
You should!
When I was there in the late 1970s, we were advised, if we got off the train at the picnic area to look out for the "meadow muffins", also known as "cow pies". Is this still the case?
😎👌👍
thanx for sharing!!
My pleasure!
Nice 👍 sharing
Thanks for visiting
Great video jawtooth
Thanks!
Shay Steam Action! Thank you very much Mr. Jaw Tooth!!
Thanks for watching !
I bet that is a popular train in the fall when the leaves show there colours
People come from all around the world to see it
It is. On those days they used to run two locos to the top with the train and the cars would all be full except one. The open car right in front of the engines. Even with that, if there were leaves on the track and they had to stop ( Deer on the track in our case ) it made for some interesting restarts up the hill. The original engine shop was still smoking when we first went there. And the mill was still pretty much intact. Many don't know it but the station there is also not the original as it too caught fire and was rebuilt.
❤ people who as a hobby? Restore and maintain (to working order) of these ladies.. 👍
