Pretty cool video of the Cass Scenic Railroad. I hope one day to visit this railroad. My favorite locomotive at the CSRR is the world’s oldest Shay in operation, Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #5.
My special needs son does too! He has a dvd 📀 from Pentrex about the Cass Scenic Railroad's 1990 railfan weekend starring Shays 2, 3, & 4 and Hiesler 6.
My special needs son and I both like geared ⚙ steam locomotives 🚂 too! My favorite is the Shay with its 3 pistons on the right side that move up and down instead of side to side, I think it is a very interesting mechanical system!
My son (who will be 3 in May) is fascinated by your footage of the Cass locomotives - its all he wants to watch right now! And why not?! This is some beautiful work!

When compared to other steam locomotives of the times these Shays were built, they were extremely advanced and complex. It’s a shame the technology didn’t progress further until the end of steam.
I am so looking forward to the day when the Cass to Durbin line will be finished when it was washed out in 1985 I thought it would never be rebuilt I just hope it wont happen again but it will be a joy to see the cass locomotives visit Durbin again I wonder when the BC&G 2-8-0 will get started on I am really looking forward to seeing that girl run again.
I'm pretty sure the Durbin Rocket will still run. I believe they're going to run a river mainline train in addition to the normal Cass trips. For the first few years, one of the Cass Shays or Climax 9 will handle this train, and eventually a conventional steam engine will take over from them (Buffalo Creek #4). This is what I've heard online at least.
That is a great and cool video! The shay, climax, and heisler are my 3 favorite locomotives. is it true that the state of west Virginia does not own the railroad any more? also did the railroad receive a new steam locomotive that is not a gear longing locomotive?
@@DynamoProductions-trains o ok, thanks for clearing that up. What about the CSRR reciving a new locomotive? Have you heard or seen anything about that?
@@DynamoProductions-trainsMy son is delighted to hear that! It is one of his dreams for abandoned and/or removed railroad tracks 🛤 to be rebuilt and used again.
What happened to Durbin & greenbrier valley's climax #3? is it still operation, or is it's 1472 inspection still ongoing ? (Haven't seen any recent video of climax #3)
No, at least it's not currently planned to. (Plans change, though) They had originally made one for the Climax, however they opted to go with the shotgun stack for her as it is what she wore in freight service.
Awesome! What a rare treat to see a Class-C Climax running again, especially since Hillcrest #10 fell silent a few years ago. Wonder if MK&Co #9 here suffers from the same vibration issue Hillcrest #10 does. Anyway, thank you for the wonderful footage and for sharing!
Correct. We film far too much to post everything we cover when we cover it. Dozens of videos go into a backlog and get scheduled for posting months, or even a couple of years after they were produced. This video was filmed in 2019, but not posted until 2020.
Sorry, I really am not qualified to have commented. I have never gotten to go on this train yet. We retired recently and hope to see some running stream locomotives and ride on ones that take people on excursions. My daddy was an Santa Fe engineer on steam locomotives in 1947 until they were replaced with diesels. He always entertained the grandkids with a really good impression of a stream locomotive whistle and puffing of the smoke.

This is probably the best Cass Scenic Railroad video I’ve seen in a while
Thanks
Pretty cool video of the Cass Scenic Railroad. I hope one day to visit this railroad. My favorite locomotive at the CSRR is the world’s oldest Shay in operation, Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #5.
Great and beautiful train ride, always love Cass WV. Some beautiful scenery and all the steam engines.
Couldn't agree more!
Thank you. That brings back beautiful memories.
Glad you enjoyed
I LOVE CASS
So do we
My special needs son does too! He has a dvd 📀 from Pentrex about the Cass Scenic Railroad's 1990 railfan weekend starring Shays 2, 3, & 4 and Hiesler 6.
Logging locomotives have always been a breed unto themselves, just watching the driveshafts spinning around powering all the wheels is amazing.
They've always been great to watch in action.

Thanks for keeping all these magnificent beasts in working order.

Magical subjects, magical filming... thank you, Brian, for the pleasure of watching and, of course, listening. Best wishes, Bob K.

Never been here, but I want to go! cause you inspired me👍
Glad we inspired you to go. It's a hike to get there, but the scenery and operation is hard to top.
@Dynamo Productions good to know
Great work on this one guys! The photo specials at Cass never seem to get old!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video with fantastic sound! It was almost as good as being there!!!

Track got a lot better and less about "quick setup in non-existent track"
Good job.....

Super good video, thumbs up :)

Looks like 2021 will finally be the year
Is it me or is the valve timing on climax number 9 a little off
yes after the photo special was over they started to fix that issue
This was one of the 9's first real runs, the timing would need work.
Once the entire line from Cass to Durbin is rebuilt, will trains still depart from Durbin or will all trains be departing from Cass?
I'm pretty sure the Durbin Rocket will still run. I believe they're going to run a river mainline train in addition to the normal Cass trips. For the first few years, one of the Cass Shays or Climax 9 will handle this train, and eventually a conventional steam engine will take over from them (Buffalo Creek #4). @@thunderbird1921 the mechanics at Cass sure know their stuff and I bet Cass scenic railroad is proud to have a climax in their collection
@@thunderbird1921 They purchased Southern 604 (BC&G #4) from the NCTM for this explicit purpose.
There will still be a train from Durbin, it's likely they will run an extra on the Durbin line.
Awesome video liked just 1 % more to do to fix rail line !🚂🚃👍
Glad you enjoyed
Great video!!!
Thanks
when could the whole rail line be rebuilt ?🛤
They’re hoping to complete the line this summer
What whistle is #9 Wearing??
That is a great and cool video! The shay, climax, and heisler are my 3 favorite locomotives. is it true that the state of west Virginia does not own the railroad any more? also did the railroad receive a new steam locomotive that is not a gear longing locomotive?
The state still owns it, they simply do not operate it anymore. They contract the operations to the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad.
@@DynamoProductions-trains o ok, thanks for clearing that up. What about the CSRR reciving a new locomotive? Have you heard or seen anything about that?
@@jacobramsey7624 I imagine you mean the former BC&G 2-8-0 No. 4. No. 4 is expected to be restored at some point for service on the Greenbrier line.
Is the line being rebuilt from Durbin to Cass, or all the way to the mainline connection at Whitcomb?
The whole line is being rebuilt between Cass and Durbin. (Which is now complete)
@@DynamoProductions-trainsMy son is delighted to hear that! It is one of his dreams for abandoned and/or removed railroad tracks 🛤 to be rebuilt and used again.

Still being rebuilt. Cass is working on several other projects in the meantime.
was No 9 wearing a PRR 3 chime?
Shay #5's front buffer is maroon for some reason.
I think it’s wooden, but I’m not sure.
Great work, new subscriber
Thank you.
hiesler 6's bell sounds cool.
Shay's Heisler's and Climax's Whistles in the woods. Listen to those echos. Not a PAINTED up.
The real deal right here
Is the climax getting a diamond smoke stack?
No, at least it's not currently planned to. (Plans change, though) They had originally made one for the Climax, however they opted to go with the shotgun stack for her as it is what she wore in freight service.
Why has the whistles been changing?
They always change the whistles at Cass
@@DynamoProductions-trainsMy special needs son likes the whistles Shays 2 & 4 and Hiesler 6 had during the 1990 Railfan weekend.
Why not bring Viscose 6, Flag Coal 75, Lehigh Valley Co. 126 and Jeddo Coal 85 to visit the Cass Scenic Railroad in the future? That'll be nice!
Cass already has five or six operable steam engines on site, they don’t need to bring in tank engines

when did you record this
September 6th-8th of last year for the fall photo special
Correct, 2019 fall photo special.

I think the only three truck Heisler on the world?
There’s a few three truck Heislers out there, the 6 is the only currently operable one.
What would make Cass even better is if the didn't blow the whistles so much....dam whistle punks. Nice video, thanks.
Seriously...the whistles are my favorite.
@@JJs-ClassC-Adventures Yes seriously. Way to much whistle....made for foamers...not realistic.
