- More Steam Engines In One Place That You Can Imagine! Real Operating Steam Locomotives! These steam trains are in Cass, West Virginia at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. This is the Parade Of Steam. 5 Steam Locomotives putting on Americas best steam show. Plenty of smoke and whistles. There are 4 Shay locomotives and one Heisler locomotive that are all under steam and running between the railroad crossing at the train station and the water tower at the railroad shop area. We also see a double headed steam train at a public railroad crossing shoving up the steep mountain to Spruce, West Virginia.
When at Cass, listen in on 160.455 and find out what is going on. They also have an HO scale model railroad. It is seen near the end of the video. The model train layout is set up to represent what Cass looked like back in the day. Don't forget to see what the pets are up to and check out the slide show at the end of the video.
The Parade Of Steam is an annual event in Cass. I filmed this a couple years ago and posted it while the 2023 Parade Of Steam was going on. Look for the updated version out soon.
Filmed Saturday, June 19, 2021 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Those whistles represent an era that really solidified the building of America with families determined to make a go of it. To be fair not everything was the " good old days" but these Steamers represent true engineering to overcome whatever nature threw at them. It certainly isnt noise but rather a sound that told millions of people in towns large and small here we come and we're getting it done. Happy Father's Day whether trackside or by the BBQ.
Yes the engineering is quite awesome with these locomotives to get them extra power and torque!
Happy Father's Day !!🎉 Love, Blessings and Greetings from Phoenix, Durban, South Africa
🙋♀️🙋♂️🙏✝️❤️🇿🇦
I enjoyed watching all of the shays in operation! And that Climax locomotive (#9) is a rare oddity.
Thanks for watching 😊
Those whistles echoing in the mountains are an unmatched piece o music!!!!!!! All the major railroad conpanies need to go back and use the steam engines and old passenger cars for overnight trips and "dinner trains"!!! Wouldnt that be a hoot JT???!!!!!
2:00- That's one hell of a drivetrain👍
Did the Greenbrier Express Experience last Sunday. Great ride to Durbin. The river views and valley was great. Seen fishermen and deer 🦌. Well worth it
Very cool!🎉
I loved it when they would run them through the Swannanoa Valley (Black Mountain, NC) years ago. We would find a spot to wait, then get in the car and go out ahead of it so you could see it again! Great times!
Love this. Those distant whistles echoing through the valleys just puts goosebumps on your arms. Nothing more nostalgic than that. One good thing about being old is that I'm old enough to remember the distant whistle of a steam engine. Thanks JT.
I was wondering if you were there for this years parade. I absolutely love hearing the whistles resounding throughout the beautiful mountains of West Virginia.
It's been a minute since I've been over to Cass, but I've riden up to Whittaker and Bald Knob dozens of times over the years.
Happy Father's day everyone.
I’m from WV as well!
my father was raised during the great depredation in the state of Colorado he saw steam trains or locomotives way back when before moving to San Francisco California my father rode in a steam locomotive sorry for any misspells or mistakes in spelling.
@@bendavis6722 my parents were also depression era. Dad and Mom were born in 1917 and 1923 respectively. Dad from a Coal Mining Camp in southern West Virginia and mom from a farm in southwest Virginia. Both rode steam many, many times. Even 5 of my 6 older siblings rode steam throughout West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
@@GandAdventures I'm in Kanawha County, where are you located??
Yes I am! I am in Cass right now 😊
Awesome video
@Bryant Sanders you said it, this video is absolutely magnificant, i wish i could be me do this video.
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidèo et très bon dimanche ! 🌟
Everything about them is cool! I especially like the old steam whistles. They sound so much better than the modern versions
Awesome video, JT. You nailed it again.😊😊😊
They use their steam whistles like musical instruments. Using the echo of the mountains for reverb.
Great trains from them there old days. With all the moving parts I'd say they are pretty quiet.
Thanks for watching 😊
I consider myself extremely lucky to live near Yorkshire’s National Railway Museum (NRM), which probably has the biggest collection of steam locomotives in the world, but sadly not many are functional anymore. My favourite locomotive is the Ivatt Atlantic, 251, which currently resides at Danum in Doncaster, beside Green Arrow. Last time I was at the NRM in August 2022, the other Ivatt Atlantic, Henry Oakley, was behind doors having works done. It’d be nice to see him functional.
What strikes me is the way the pistons operate a shaft that runs all the way back to the coal car, looks like gears run off the shaft. Plus I love those whistles
Yes, the shaft has teeth at each wheel, and the wheels have teeth, too. . .
Awesome video with a horn salute but wait there’s more 👍😎🇺🇸🚂👍
More to come!😊
I put this on the big screen for the 3 year old . He loved it, and so did I.
I've never seen loco's like these.
Many thanks for putting up.
Great video! Enjoy seeing those ole shays & the climax pull! They may not be fast, but they can drag a mountain behind them!
Cass is only about a 100 miles west, so we all love to go there.
Thanks again for letting us all get up close and personal to the railroads!
Great video! My brother was there several years ago when they brought one of the locomotives to Cass.
Very cool!😊
The mechanicals on these engines are fabulous also. 😊😊
Indeed!😊
That is cool, a parade of Shays. Your videos are aweaome😅 You got it made in the Shays😂
Thanks 😅
Wow, awesome video 👍❤️
Finally trains you don't see everyday
That depends on where you dwell or work. ;-)
Back in 1952 I lived in Southern Illinois in a town that had two different railroads come through town. I remember seeing my first diesel Locomotive and it was pulling twenty-six steam locomotive to the steel mill in Granite City where they were all scrapped. Livingston had a coal mine and water tower along the tracks and the Steam Locomotives would replenish their water and Coal supplies. I still love to watch and listen to the old Iron Horses any chance that I get to see.💝. The two railroad companies were Chicago and Northwestern and New York Central.
I was at Cass in 85. Talk about your natural surround sound. Totally awesome. Thanks J.T.
If I could like this video 100 times I would.
I would like to thank all the people that put their money, blood , sweat , time and love in to keep these beautiful steeds running.
Don't know why but just seeing these things operating beings tears to my eyes.
AWESOME!!!!
WOW JUST WOW!!!!!
Thanks for sharing this!! Even though I live minutes away I was not able to go. Wish I could have seen the trains and met you. Iworked on Climax #9 during it's rebuild. We assembled the rear truck!! I think the run Cass ro Durbin is running now.....or at least they sell tickets for it!!! Yet to ride myself. Thanks
Next time! Sounds good 😊
Awesome catches and great long video
Thank you very much!😊
Nothing screams Narrow Guage like 4 Shays and a Climax. God, those multiple chime whistles sound so good.
NOT Narrow Gauge and not Heisler but is a Climax
All standard gauge although I understand your sediment
Definitely not a Heisler. Climax build #1551. Built in Corry PA in 1919
Do they like kitchen, bathroom, well or bottled water? Best stream show ever, Señor Jaws. Gracias por tu video. RT sends, Puebla, México...
STEAM RULES!!! Thanks 😊😎👌👍👍👍!
Thanks Jawtooth for helping me relive a piece of my childhood. Those whistles sound beautifull.
Amazing video JT, I never heard the train whistles so clearly, they were echoing throughout the valley there. First time I saw screw pistons on the locos. You're getting special access to places no one else gets. great!
so beautiful nothing gives you the true sense of American history. Thank you so much. Brings back memories of my grandpa, an engineer on Lackawanna railroad.
There was lots of smoke and whistles in this video! Thank you for uploading this wonderful video of the locomotives of the Cass Scenic Railroad, Jaw Tooth! I enjoyed watching this video that you took two years ago.
Great video and happy Father's day to you and your family from GA and stay safe and God bless

Thanks a lot Jaw thooth!
Many greetings from Belgium!

Not a Heisler; it's a Climax.
@Eric Emmons Thanks for the info

A steam train marathon, this video! I had to pick a time when I could sit down and watch the whole thing.
Those have a to be some of the most interesting drive units ever! Great video JT!
🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃💯👍🇺🇸
Thanks 👍😊
Kinda wild to think that this was “high tech” at one time.😂
Even wilder: breeding horses is "higher tech" now than when these engines took over from the horses.
Watching this engine gives me a feeling of calm.
i enjoyed video and the kids covering their ears good job j t
Excellent Video
☘️🌵🇮🇳☘️🌵
Up until my son was in his mid teens, we would go to Strasbourg to see & hear the steam engines. Although born in Lancaster City,we were living in NY. Any time we traveled through the area, we had to make a stop. We were both enamored by the huge machines but to this day he still is awestruck. He's doing the same w/his kids. They are magnificent!
That's pretty cool there my friend.
Nothing will beat the Barker's bark but steam train whistles come a close second.
I believe that you have found the perfect steam locomotive retirement center. 😂😅🎉
Interesting facts Shay number five is the oldest operating shay locomotive in the world has been operating since the 19 teens correct me if I’m wrong
Wonderful video, I liked it my friend! Have a nice new week, greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Thank you! You too!
The crossing at 55:25! Nice!!
HAPPY FATHERS DAY BRIAN! This made my day!
Glad to hear it😊

Hi Jaw Tooth 😊 you always got a thumbs up! Vintage Steam in the essence I Say! Thank You and Happy Belated Father's Day too U!!
Who is more beautiful
Is it a steam train
Or a diesel train
I vote diesel. They are like stinking monsters 🤭
But what about
The beauty and the majesty
Of the steam train
Steam, without a doubt. . .

That was cool JT!! Thanks!
Guys, i just want to let all know that in September of this year, im going to a train drivers course, and hopefully next year, i will conquering my childhood dream.
Best of luck to you! - Are you aware that it is common practice (globally) to start as a fireman? (Actually as some depot best boy before starting on a moving engine.)
@@chrislaarman7532 in Portugal, i will achieve my dream of drive trains, and i will have a successful career.
@@chrislaarman7532 i have some great videos of the trains on my channel that you will enjoy a lot.
@@LisbonRailProductionsandF1 Thank you! I have just subscribed. :-)
@@LisbonRailProductionsandF1 I see: the "fine print" didn't mention "steam". Yes, then your career may go faster! (Pun intended.) Best of luck to you! :-)

@walter langston good for you, my friend, one day, im planning on travel to the USA and film the trains, im from Portugal.

Amazing !! Living locomotives with each having it's own haunting whistle ... so haunting ... Ghosts of the Woods ~ Live .
That was a cool video. Thanks for taking us there.
Glad you enjoyed it
Son that was a good show from the past. Start the video for five dpu's son.
I think steam engines are the best
Thanks for the video JT! Brings back a bunch of memories. I have not been there in ages and really need to go back especially since they have the Climax operating. I really like shays but the the climax is my favorite geared locomotive. Happy Father's Day!!
The first time I seen one of those steam engines with the three vertical cylinders, was back in the 1960's in New Jersey. I was a young teenager at the time. Neat steam engine switcher for hills as well. Wow 5 (or so) engines with gear driven traction wheels! Have you considered traveling or been to the Strasburg Railroad and museum in Lancaster county Pennsylvania? Now that is a cool place to visit as well!
They have an amazing collection of steam locomotives, awesome.
I agree!
Hey JT, did you ever take a trip up the mountain there at the Cass Scenic? WOW, all 5 of the locomotives together are INCREDIBLE!!!
Yes, more than once
Okay, JT, all your videos at the least are very good. A lot of them fall into the excellent category, some into the WOW category. But this one is the "bestest" one yet! There is not an adequate word to describe it! The steam whistles sent chills up the spine. Watching all the moving parts that turn the wheels is seeing an engineering marvel. Hearing the bells ringing really brings back memories of my dad. He went to work on the NWP RR in 1923 at the age of 15. Among his duties at first was always making sure the bell was shined up before the train left. He worked himself up to engineer on the steam engines and then on the diesels! Thanks so much for some great video and memories! Liked the quick little peek at the family. Especially loved seeing Chessie up the tree!
Awesomely great video thanks Jaw tooth happy father's day
Lovely looking ladies - all of them!
Thanks for the unintentional update on the Buffalo Creek and Gauly #4. aka the Spencer 604. I havent seen any pictures of it since it got there. I know they're waiting on funds for the boiler, but it looks like the rest of the running gear is done. From what Ive read, that will eventually by the go-to engine for the Durbin Rocket.
Excellent video, Im going to try and be up there next year.
Love it !!!!
There is something special about live steam locomotives. To stand next to one you might think it was alive. The sound of a lonesome steam whistle in the mountains give me goosebumps. As a historian, I try to imagine life in America in the 1940’s. A time when this sound was commonplace across the continent.
Very cool Video JT! Would love to go there some day!
Great parade of steam! I was hoping to hear a hooter whistle.
Next time!😊
Next time, park your car on the level crossin. ;-)
awesome video!
Good morning 🙏 🌄
The ash is used to make concrete. It is part of the cement portion of the mix.
Nice ❤️ 👌 👍
Pretty incredible. You don’t see Steam engines much anymore, do you?
Totally awesome! This place is on my bucket list.
Go for it!
The locomotives blowing there whistles in unison was cool, those old Shay logging engines are neat!🛤🚂
Yes indeed!
