Those whistles represent an era that really solidified the building of America with families determined to make a go of it. To be fair not everything was the " good old days" but these Steamers represent true engineering to overcome whatever nature threw at them. It certainly isnt noise but rather a sound that told millions of people in towns large and small here we come and we're getting it done. Happy Father's Day whether trackside or by the BBQ.
Love this. Those distant whistles echoing through the valleys just puts goosebumps on your arms. Nothing more nostalgic than that. One good thing about being old is that I'm old enough to remember the distant whistle of a steam engine. Thanks JT.
I was wondering if you were there for this years parade. I absolutely love hearing the whistles resounding throughout the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. It's been a minute since I've been over to Cass, but I've riden up to Whittaker and Bald Knob dozens of times over the years. Happy Father's day everyone.
my father was raised during the great depredation in the state of Colorado he saw steam trains or locomotives way back when before moving to San Francisco California my father rode in a steam locomotive sorry for any misspells or mistakes in spelling.
@@bendavis6722 my parents were also depression era. Dad and Mom were born in 1917 and 1923 respectively. Dad from a Coal Mining Camp in southern West Virginia and mom from a farm in southwest Virginia. Both rode steam many, many times. Even 5 of my 6 older siblings rode steam throughout West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
Those whistles echoing in the mountains are an unmatched piece o music!!!!!!! All the major railroad conpanies need to go back and use the steam engines and old passenger cars for overnight trips and "dinner trains"!!! Wouldnt that be a hoot JT???!!!!!
I loved it when they would run them through the Swannanoa Valley (Black Mountain, NC) years ago. We would find a spot to wait, then get in the car and go out ahead of it so you could see it again! Great times!
Did the Greenbrier Express Experience last Sunday. Great ride to Durbin. The river views and valley was great. Seen fishermen and deer 🦌. Well worth it
Great video! Enjoy seeing those ole shays & the climax pull! They may not be fast, but they can drag a mountain behind them! Cass is only about a 100 miles west, so we all love to go there. Thanks again for letting us all get up close and personal to the railroads!
Everything about them is cool! I especially like the old steam whistles. They sound so much better than the modern versions Awesome video, JT. You nailed it again.😊😊😊
What strikes me is the way the pistons operate a shaft that runs all the way back to the coal car, looks like gears run off the shaft. Plus I love those whistles
Beautiful done video about a special american steam locomotive, the Shay and Heisler locomotives. What a wonderful machines with their particular pistons! Thanks a lot Jaw thooth! Many greetings from Belgium!
Thanks for sharing this!! Even though I live minutes away I was not able to go. Wish I could have seen the trains and met you. Iworked on Climax #9 during it's rebuild. We assembled the rear truck!! I think the run Cass ro Durbin is running now.....or at least they sell tickets for it!!! Yet to ride myself. Thanks
Amazing video JT, I never heard the train whistles so clearly, they were echoing throughout the valley there. First time I saw screw pistons on the locos. You're getting special access to places no one else gets. great!
so beautiful nothing gives you the true sense of American history. Thank you so much. Brings back memories of my grandpa, an engineer on Lackawanna railroad.
Up until my son was in his mid teens, we would go to Strasbourg to see & hear the steam engines. Although born in Lancaster City,we were living in NY. Any time we traveled through the area, we had to make a stop. We were both enamored by the huge machines but to this day he still is awestruck. He's doing the same w/his kids. They are magnificent!
Back in 1952 I lived in Southern Illinois in a town that had two different railroads come through town. I remember seeing my first diesel Locomotive and it was pulling twenty-six steam locomotive to the steel mill in Granite City where they were all scrapped. Livingston had a coal mine and water tower along the tracks and the Steam Locomotives would replenish their water and Coal supplies. I still love to watch and listen to the old Iron Horses any chance that I get to see.💝. The two railroad companies were Chicago and Northwestern and New York Central.
I consider myself extremely lucky to live near Yorkshire’s National Railway Museum (NRM), which probably has the biggest collection of steam locomotives in the world, but sadly not many are functional anymore. My favourite locomotive is the Ivatt Atlantic, 251, which currently resides at Danum in Doncaster, beside Green Arrow. Last time I was at the NRM in August 2022, the other Ivatt Atlantic, Henry Oakley, was behind doors having works done. It’d be nice to see him functional.
I would like to thank all the people that put their money, blood , sweat , time and love in to keep these beautiful steeds running. Don't know why but just seeing these things operating beings tears to my eyes. AWESOME!!!! WOW JUST WOW!!!!!
There was lots of smoke and whistles in this video! Thank you for uploading this wonderful video of the locomotives of the Cass Scenic Railroad, Jaw Tooth! I enjoyed watching this video that you took two years ago.
Okay, JT, all your videos at the least are very good. A lot of them fall into the excellent category, some into the WOW category. But this one is the "bestest" one yet! There is not an adequate word to describe it! The steam whistles sent chills up the spine. Watching all the moving parts that turn the wheels is seeing an engineering marvel. Hearing the bells ringing really brings back memories of my dad. He went to work on the NWP RR in 1923 at the age of 15. Among his duties at first was always making sure the bell was shined up before the train left. He worked himself up to engineer on the steam engines and then on the diesels! Thanks so much for some great video and memories! Liked the quick little peek at the family. Especially loved seeing Chessie up the tree!
Thanks for the video JT! Brings back a bunch of memories. I have not been there in ages and really need to go back especially since they have the Climax operating. I really like shays but the the climax is my favorite geared locomotive. Happy Father's Day!!
Great video it's good to see them still use coal the cumbres and Toltec the Durango Silverton use oil it just isn't the same with the smell of coal thank you keep them coming that was great
Thanks for the unintentional update on the Buffalo Creek and Gauly #4. aka the Spencer 604. I havent seen any pictures of it since it got there. I know they're waiting on funds for the boiler, but it looks like the rest of the running gear is done. From what Ive read, that will eventually by the go-to engine for the Durbin Rocket. Excellent video, Im going to try and be up there next year.
There is something special about live steam locomotives. To stand next to one you might think it was alive. The sound of a lonesome steam whistle in the mountains give me goosebumps. As a historian, I try to imagine life in America in the 1940’s. A time when this sound was commonplace across the continent.
The first time I seen one of those steam engines with the three vertical cylinders, was back in the 1960's in New Jersey. I was a young teenager at the time. Neat steam engine switcher for hills as well. Wow 5 (or so) engines with gear driven traction wheels! Have you considered traveling or been to the Strasburg Railroad and museum in Lancaster county Pennsylvania? Now that is a cool place to visit as well!
Couldn't you assign different ring tones to different (groups of) people? Your partner in life, mother in law, boss, always-complaining client, ...? ;-)
@@chrislaarman7532 An interesting idea! Who would best be represented by a lumbering old relic spewing sparks and smoke, and emitting a load of hot air? On the other hand, is there someone who used to of great service to the community and now is regarded as a national treasure?

Yes the engineering is quite awesome with these locomotives to get them extra power and torque!
I enjoyed watching all of the shays in operation! And that Climax locomotive (#9) is a rare oddity.

Nothing screams Narrow Guage like 4 Shays and a Climax. God, those multiple chime whistles sound so good.
NOT Narrow Gauge and not Heisler but is a Climax

Who is more beautiful
Is it a steam train
Or a diesel train
I vote diesel. They are like stinking monsters 🤭
But what about
The beauty and the majesty
Of the steam train
Steam, without a doubt. . .
Kinda wild to think that this was “high tech” at one time.😂
Even wilder: breeding horses is "higher tech" now than when these engines took over from the horses.
Petticoat junction came to mind when I saw the water tower and the train lol.

Interesting facts Shay number five is the oldest operating shay locomotive in the world has been operating since the 19 teens correct me if I’m wrong
