- First Time That 5 Shay Steam Locomotives Operated At Same Time! These Are Real Coal Burning Steam Engines On The Cass Scenic Railroad In Cass West Virginia. The Worlds Largest Collection Of Geared Steam Locomotives, Cass Scenic Railroad Operates On Logging Tracks & Ex Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Tracks. Lots of smoke and steam train whistles!
I left my home at 3am and arrived at Cass, West Virginia at 9am. This is Part 1 of 2 parts. We see the locomotives make 5 round trip passes from the water tower to the train station and back. Each eastbound trip the locomotives were running forward and something different was done. You will see the steam engines running single and in groups. The final pass was the grand finale with as much whistle and smoke as possible. That was really awesome and loud! I filmed at a couple of different spots. Which location and which pass was your favorite?
It was special to see Shay Number 6 back in operation. It was the final Shay built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1945. The locomotive spent 4 years in operation hauling coal before retirement.
The trains operate on 160.455 and are standard gauge. Last year Cass operated 4 Shays and a Climax locomotive. I filmed that and you can find last years Parade Of Steam in my Steam Trains play list. Part 2 will show the passenger trains pulled by the steam locomotives. They ran 2 round trip passenger trains along the river on the line that goes to Durbin, West Virginia. The line is finally open all the way from Cass to Durbin although these trains did not run the fun distance.

Happy birthday! I didn't know it was your birthday on that day. That was a good day to have one. I was glad to meet you also. I had been thinking of stopping over at St Denis to Railfan for a long time. Cass would be a pretty good little ride for the dogs but I took Chessie today to chase a train. That was fun at Cass and I hope you had a great day!

Those Shay's are such an interesting breed of steamers. Great invention for handling the steep terrains when they were logging.

Nice! My late mother-in-law would love to be here! We took her here in the 80s, and in the 2000s my oldest son rented a car and took her back to Cass again! She couldn't get enough of this place!

I had an uncle who started out on steam engines with the L&N Railway and he had two whistles which he kept when he retired. I remember he used both of them.

DPU. Definitely Perfect Unison. I can just picture JT there I see you and you and you. Also you had it made with all the coal smoke drifting just to the other side so you didn't have to breathe it all in and it didn't block the photos. Perfect place to just sit back and enjoy the view. I love it when you visit Cass, always a highlight for me JT. It's hard to pick a favourite they are all so special. I definitely preferred trains going forward on the first individual run & for me Cass number 5 edged it! for the amount of smoke bellowing out of her huge funnel, they all had extremely loud whistles! It's a beautiful place with the backdrop of all the hills & trees. I bet people come from all over the US to witness this spectacle it's awesome. The highlight of course all of the locos riding along together beautiful sight. Unfortunately I can only watch on video because all that smoke & steam would aggravate my lung disease & put me in hospital! 😅 All your fans appreciate you so much JT for driving all that way & filming Cass for us, thank you. ❤❤❤❤🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂😊👍

Was hoping you would go this year. It looked like a perfect day, smoky, steamy, loud, no rain. and exciting!!! Glad to see they had a large crowd, hope they had plenty of food trucks and concessions. And plenty of porta potties!
This is the best weather I have ever seen at Cass. Perfect temperature and sun. Last year it was cloudy. They also had live music under a big tent. It was excellent and thanks for watching!

The engineer aboard the Number 5 locomotive was the best, and seemed to be the only one who understands how to (impressively) blow those steam whistles in mountain terrain...you time each "blast" (with a "snap" of the cord) to "play off" of the mountainsides...it's the "haunting" echo that makes these timeless whistles so appealing...not pumping the "daylight" out of 'em.
It's probably my favorite place in all of West Virginia!

in Kentucky. Even though it scares the daylights out of me, I can't get enough of that bridge!
JT those Shay engines was strictly built for power, not speed. I think their top speed was like 20 to 30 miles an hour, but they were built for the logging industry. They used to pull massive loads of logs out of the mountains and through the valleys and stuff like that but anyway, another awesome video my friend and you stay safe out there and watch your back and be careful on your ride back home.

JT, the only way that could have been better is if they came past one by one, throttles open all the way, pulling 30 cars of logs. I'm talking _Shays!_ Lots of people these days don't know just what steam power did for everyone. We didn't live in that era. However, if it were not for that steam era we would not have gotten this era. it is a shame we have forgotten how to make them.
When they all pulled the whistle cords at the same time I laughed out loud. Absolutely 💯👍👍👍👍👍

Love this. I spent some time as a kid above Cass at uncle's homeplace. There was a stagecoach that crossed the river then too, along with original store, before it burnt.

Yes, these are geared locomotives called Shays. First time that they have done this with all 5 being a Shay. Thanks for your support again Mark! I really appreciate it and it goes to a good cause. That was a drive. I'm planning on going to East Broad Top Railroad in Pennsylvania this summer and you will really like those locomotives over there. they have narrow gauge. Thanks again!

Always enjoy footage of these "snail's races" between Shays, though a double vs. a triple-header is all new to me. I've never seen anything like it before.
Those rough and tumble locomotives really make fine power for a tourist railroad. You could say it's the easiest retirement these iron draft horses could ever have hoped for.
