Now that's workholding at its finest.
Finally the Primitive Technology collaboration we have all been waiting for
He made this a couple years ago for his antikythera project. Awesome series if you haven't seen it yet
‘Finally’? Dude where ya been, this is just an edit of work Chris did ages ago!
Can’t wait for them to converge at the same level of technology!
It's kind of heartening to know there's at least one guy who can jumpstart technology after the zombie apocalypse, with a rock and a sharp stick.
Yeah, there would be some fire involved in producing the first batch of metals. I think the rock and sharp stick would come into play there too, though.
I was just using my Yankee Drill , thinking I was clever using a forgotten tool!
I sometimes use a spear point drill to define a punch mark, I pop one into a pin chuck great when chasing accuracy.
I just sat down for a break, this made it very nice, thanks.
I love these short videos. They are quite relaxing.
Funnily enough "the pumpdrill" is Mrs Clickspring's nickname for Chris amongst her friends... 😀
Got some jams going now, Chris!
Great vid 😄
Wax is the OG superglue.
I think that’s pitch, or the red stuff, I can’t remember the name. It’s too hard and brittle to be wax though. It is so cool that he uses such old tech. IT is amazing how effective it was.
@@torchmd The 'Wax' Oscar is referring to is Shellac (probably the red stuff you're trying to remember. In this case with added carbon to make it black for filling in clock dial numerals. Why the Horological world calls shellac, 'wax', I don't know :) The 'wax chucks' for watchmaker's lathes is a flat disc on a stalk, that is held in the lathe collet, and shellac is applied to the surface, and the object to be turned stuck on it. Again, why not 'Shellac Chuck' ? I don't know. All the Horological books I've got, from antique to 'only' 70 years old use this terminology. Cheers.
Whew… that was a “hole” lot of pumping!
SNL I'm not worthy keeps running through my head
I wonder what shape the drill used here has ❓
Nice video, thanks! But can anyone tell me how would they have removed shellac in the days before acetone?
Shellac dissolves in alcohol :) Also most of it will chip off cleanly leaving little to dissolve off. Cheers
Awesome, love the music, anyone know the title of it?
what is the piece of leather by the tip for?
In order not to scratch the piece when the drill bit goes through and should the drill drops down, I think
To add mass like a flyhwheel to better regulate speed/add momentum for the reversal
What is the black resin-like material you were using? And can it be used to hold while engraving too? How aboit chasing, might be too fragile for that?
It's probably shellac. It's used by watchmakers with a so-called "wax chuck" on the lathe, too, so it's pretty sturdy stuff if there's enough surface area. A lot of machinists use cyanoacrylate glues for the same purpose since they are easy to release with a torch, cleans off with acetone and is likely stronger than shellac. Some even use blue tape on the chuck and part and just glue the tape together which seems insane to me.
The black stuff you always affix things with..what is it and is it reusable?
G'day, it's Shellac, and, unless you over heat it, it's continually reusable. Most will chip off cleanly, ready to be rewarmed and formed into a reusable pellet, and the remaining shellac on the work piece will then dissolve off in alcohol. Cheers
Oh silent drill...
Does it have Bluetooth?! 🤣
Great video, but was completely distracted by the lo-fi skibidi
