I'm oldschool learned from father may he rest in peace. Great video, I'll add 1 thing he forgotten to mention. A bad worn out gas cap The sound will change in a bad or faulty gas cap the sound will come together far as the clicking and will not be solid. A new (vacuum) gas cap will have a more (solid) (louder) clicking sound and the clicking sound will not be coming together. Note put a paper towel in the gas filler, Next using rubbing alcohol clean the filler neck where the seal will contact the neck. Next use a very light coat of vaseline on the seal of gas cap to condition and protect. Reason for this step is dirt debris and road grime will get under the gas door making it's way under the gas cap. Resulting in #1 bad seal torn or cracked. #2 Not locking correctly, Note that's where the sound in clicking changes. Thank you and bless you all.

My dad is a mechanic and I also helped him work on cars growing up. My arms are small (still are) so I can fit in the tight spaces. I do most the work on the cars. My dad still teaches me how to do things, I cherish him and his vast automotive knowledge.
Lots of check engine lights are due to a bad gas cap. After installing it may take several days for the light to go off. Always start with the simple stuff and cheapest first. Good luck.
You can turn the light off by disconnecting the neutral post on your battery for 1/2 hr.
This was a nice easy fix for you and a smooth loss of $200 to the customer.
Seems to me the fella had an inkling that it was like the gas cap to begin with. But I suppose there ain't no money in that. me if I get a small evap leak code I'm going to change the gas cash right away clear the code driving about eighty miles and see if the light comes back on. If not I'm going to take an educated guess and say it was just a bad gas cap.

Just got a P0447 engine code, tightening the gas cap worked last time it came up, but now it’s back. Retightened it, and if it goes away I’m buying a new gas cap
My o-ring attached to the nozzle where you pump gas is ripped up and I’ve changed my gas cap but I still get an evap check engine. Can I replace this oring?
Can Code P0006 be related to a faulty gas cap? Or O-ring on nuzzle? Every time filling the tank the check engine turns on.

Learned something. Either have to turn on purge solenoid, go straight in the hose to the tank, or connect hoses.

My 91 Honda Civic idles rough when I hit half a tank. Could something like this be causing that ? I already put in new fuel pump. But it only idles rough when I hit half tank. Thanks 👍

How bad can am evap leak get? can the vehicle drive okay until it's fixed? I never done evap leak repair.
I'm sure this is my problem I have a Honda accord and it was leaking under the car on the side where the gas cap is after I opened and closed it it stopped leaking could this be why ?

Hi, my Hyundai Veloster gas cap is not clicking when tightened due to which it shows engine light. I tried a new replacement gas cap and that's doing the same thing. Haven't seen any video to solve that problem, do u know what could be the problem?

Iknow it’s been 4 years since the upload sorry for the comment lol but did you close the vent solenoid on that vehicle or no? Wondering because I had a Hyundai I forgot to close the vent valve and smoked it and had smoke coming out the cap, I assume the cap is bad because I doubt closeting the vent valve will change the results

2001 honda accord v6 300 engine gas cap is new but still losing pressure.
There is a hose not connected to anything in the fuel fill compartment in the body next to the fuel fill pipe. The smoke is coming out of it. Is that normal?

The new one sounds tighter
BLACK cap for gasoline, YELLOW cap for e85 flex fuel, GREEN cap for diesel.

Why not just replace the gas cap first, instead of investing in the smoke machine? The code (in my case) says replace the cap. Between me and the previous owner, we've replaced the gas cap three times. Yet the problem remains. What do you do when replacing the cap doesn't fix it?
I have been dealing with my gas cap for years now.I think I fixed it.Its an aftermarket cap and I thing the seat is too narrow for the rubber O ring to sit and seal properly.I filled the gap between the seat and the rachet ring with 5 minute model airplane epoxy and let the epoxy self level while drying.The O ring now sits and seals properly,I'm now left with trying to clear the stored codes on the computer
Can vapors leak past that rubber seal that is mounted on the pocket, (between the fuel cap pocket and fuel cap)?

What causes the gas caps to go bad? The rubber seal or something more complicated? Could you just add a new rubber gasket ring around the cap ?

Just age on the seal. I just end up changing the gas cap. Oring is not serviceable
The rubber seal is worn out. You should replace your cap every four years or so before failure.
It's only an investment of $15-20 for a new one.

Can a person intoduce pressure into the tank and use soapy water to find the leak. How much pressure does the smoke machine put into the evap system?
It puts out very low pressure. The only time I actually put shop air. I completely dropped the tank, after I verified the leak was at the tank and I capped all the lines to the tank and added air. If you try adding shop air to a complete system most likely damage the sensors
I got a smoke test and my cap was smoking just like in the video, but when I tried the new cap that I had with me it was still smoking. Could this be a filler neck issue?
Prod. Stress yep. Make sure the matting surface on the filler neck isn’t pitted either

Nope it wouldn’t. I would prefer taking it to a well known shop which has good reviews. Sometimes it’s better to get a proper diagnosis. I’ve saved my customers a lot of money by doing the right diag
One occasion I left my gas tank cap Open I didn't close right and after I had the engine light on the code was that evape leak I left that for a couple of weeks untill I replaced it with a new gas cap that the old didn't seal it right but I noticed that I still get poor gas mileage every time I fill the tank what should I do will something be clogged in my gas tank that's why I get low gas milea distance I suppose to get 390 Miles distance but everytime I get 280 when I filled it up
Could be bad O2 sensor(s), the Mass Air Control Sensor or you are in need of a tune up, particularly new plugs.
Just the idea of watching smoke being emitted from my gas cap is unsettling to me.
I noticed my truck was eating gas like nothing and it was my gas cap, no codes either.
My 2004 Pontiac gran prix to seperate occasions check gas cap 10 yrs.ago. I replace the gas cap. Problem solved. Now again I replaced gas cap . It didnt go away. The check engine lite comes on from time to time.

@@OzMechanics my mechanic is going to use the smoke machine. I'm going g to have both 02 sencors replaced the same time. Everything is fine no skins no hesitation. Great acceleration 265 factor hp. So I'm not overtly concerned unless the part is no longer available. As we know GM no longer make Pontiac. What bad business discition that was.

@@OzMechanics the gas cap I believe had a code it come up on the center controls milage other setting check abs. Stuff. . We will get the codes from what the check engine lite when my car goes in. I'm holding off un till April when I have vacation time.
just finish smoking a 2016 impala with a brand new gas cap from autozone P0442 ...the gas cap is no bueno...

I have a gas cap light on I replaced it and it's still on. Now the check engine light came on and it won't turn over when I try to start

I own a 2000 Chrysler Concorde LXI 3.2, and I replaced the entire Evap system. I even changed the computer PCM. I keep getting a code for EVAP LEAK DETECTION PUMP “Switch”? I can’t find anything on an Evap switch? Any ideas, would be great?

What area are you located I have plenty of automotive buddies that can pin point the problem. Just don’t want to give you info that might not help. Just hard to diagnose with out looking at the vehicle

How’s it going WWMP. With an evap leak that would not cause your gas to run down overnight. Might be looking at another issue

@@OzMechanics what will cause my fuel needle to drop badly? Im getting 6mpg on a 04 v6 4runner. It has new injectors. Just replaced o2 sensors and it reads very rich -20 upstream and -30 down stream

Nice way to show how a gas cap is bad and possible sign of an EVAP leak, but are you supposed to use the same color gas cap e-85? You replaced a black from a vehicle that uses e-85 gas.

You are not obtaining the correct mixture of O2 with the gasoline.
The cause is probably a bad Mass Air Control Sensor.
The part is not that expensive and you can change it yourself = pretty simple, easy to reach.
