Paul ty for your valuable imfo, this is jimmy and daisy dog mobile mechanic,my customer had a p0442 code and so since I've literally replaced all his hose during my process of bringing his lexus to life,I followed your advice.wrapped several layers of plastic bags around gas cap and no new code.pulled off cap removed rubber oring cleaned gas tube area and gas cap used synthetic caliper grease generously and seal was incredible.that caliper grease is good as it is synthetic and does not damage rubber!! So ty sir and God bless you and yours this new year 24!
Thank You! The smallest detail overlooked, can be the greatest stumbling block. The gas cap!
Exactly! Made my check engine light come on. This is why you don't panic when seeing that light.
I've been starting to have problems with my check engine light. I would often open my gas tank and reclose it to fix the issue. I didn't know what kind of lubricant I needed. This looks like it will work. Thanks for this video!
Outstanding video. I never knew to do this before and have issues with gas caps in the past. Thanks Paul!!
You’re welcome Steve! 👍😊
No problem.
Great video. I never thought about that. It makes a lot of sense. I thought that when your gas cap got old that it would leak fuel vapors and that's what would set off the check engine light. I didn't know about the fuel tank pressure escaping. Thanks Paul.
👍😊
this video literally saved my marriage !
👍😂
sorry to ask but im curious on how
😂😂😂
Why aren't there replacement gaskets?
Because they want to sell a cap.
Hey the ol Mcgyver paper clip hack to the rescue
No one has addressed what the "clicking" function actually does - and in fact if you try to find any info on the net about the anatomy of a modern gas cap - you can't. Why? Because one of the primary failures of the modern day gas cap is the "inner" seal - which is what the click regulates. Manufacturers want to sell new gas caps as often as they can. The outer seal works to control the seal of the cap outer threads that hold the cap in place - so they do not go out of their way to inform people about maintaining gas caps. The "inner" seal works to set the caps "pressure" maximum level - meaning, if the pressure in the tank reaches a certain height, the air can escape. This should normally not happen if the evap system is working - but the function has to be in place as a safety measure. When the inner seal gets dirty and clogged, the cap will not seal - thus the over-pressure regulation is wide-open. The only way to "clean" the inner seal is to remove the cap from the attachment cord and soak it in soap and water - then blow it out with compressed air. Dirt enters the inner portion of the cap through the vent holes you can see at the top of the cap.
Hey!.... adorable man and puppy ❤❤
I'm just going to install a brand new gas cap and go from there. I tried a quick fix like this months ago and it worked! Now the issue is back, quick fix didn't work this time. So now it's time for a replacement. Eventually you'll have to do it anyway 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Any silicon lubricant will work with rubber.
I know this is late reply. Will wd40 work?
@@ApemanstrongLV-- May cause rubber to rot.....silicone grease is best for this application
my gas cap still doesn't click when I close it after applying the vaseline to the gasket, the lubricant you used in your video costs more than just buying a new gas cap, if the vaseline doesn't work do you think I should just buy a new cap?
NEVER use Vaseline on rubber, it deteriorates it.
do they make replacement rubber seals for these caps?
What if the problem is not the gasket? Is the gas cap toast?
Great idea, clear process and heart made video.
👍😃
You can also use carb and choke cleaner.
I have a five gallon pail of KY Jelly can I use it instead of the Teflon?
is your name diddy?
could we use vaseline rather that jelly?
My rubber gasket has some cracks in it , I tried some silicone lubricant and its already running better, I orderd the gel online.
How about a little di-electric grease, or silicone ?
Hi, great video. Can I use vaseline in place of the Magic Lube?
Yes
@@proclaimliberty2000 Thanks a lot, I will try vaseline on the rubber gasket tomorrow. I have 2005 Sienna, mileage only 98k. The gas cap still clicks but I guess the rubber is withered. Right now the check engine, vsc and trac off lights are on. Instead of buying a new gas cap, I will try this economical fix first. 😃
@@proclaimliberty2000 Btw, just subscribed to your channel. 😊
@@brighteyes6559 Once you put the gas cap back on if that was the problem all the lights should turn off after a couple hundred miles of driving.
@@brighteyes6559 thank you for subscribing!
Can I use Castrol grease as I don't have any of the above
Will vasaline work, or electrical grease?
Vaseline is fine
Does plumbing grease work?
I used plumbers grease, problem didn't return.
Thats all very well with a plastic fuel cap, but on my bikes there made of metal and alloy and the rubber are bonded to the metal, plus there's nothing wrong with the rubber seal, its the rust thats the problem and it would probably take you a couple of hours to dismantle the cap even if you were wanting to lubricate the rubber seal.
How would you know if the valve in the cap is bad
Engine light comes on! Hellooo
@@charlesstuart1119 okay thanks
Thank you for telling the code, and thank you for showing each step. (Be sure to use enough snowscreen!)
👍😂
You wouldn’t believe how cold the sand can get on some of those beaches. 😂
Wouldn't petroleum jelly be just as good? Thx for sharing!!
Sure! 👍😃
Petroleum jelly can cause the gasket to expand/stretch. It might become loose and too big to fit anymore.
No.
Petroleum Jelly deteriorates rubber.
Not true at all!!@@jeremygeorgia4943
Not true at all!!@@motorcitymanman7711
Could I instead use WD-40 to clean it I have seen some people clean it with this
When you say Super Lube, can you use Vasoline instead? What other items can serve as a substitute?
Don't put a petroleum based lubricant on the seal. It will swell and eventually deteriorate.
Vacuum pressure?
I wouldn’t recommend any lubricant on your gas cap gasket. Small amounts of dirt will also cause a leak. The lubricant is going to attract WAY more dirt than if you just cleaned it with 70% isopropyl
Cute Yorkie ❤. 😊
❤ I love him !❤
My old gas cap on my 08 equinox was starting to not click anymore so I bought one of those cool locking gas caps on Amazon, just the next morning after I replaced it the car threw the p0455 code can I just add a seal to it or just buy the oem original?
Always buy OEM
Teflon lube is hard to find I've been all over town nobody has it. I'm wondering how vaseline would work
Pool stores will carry teflon lube. Vaseline would work fine.
Can I simply use Vaseline, grease or similar lubricating gel ???
Vaseline would be fine
Cool! Thanks! And may God bless you and yours 🙏😎✌
👍😊
Vaseline also works great! Thanks for the videos!!
never put vaseline on rubber gaskets
@@kkp4297 why not?
Vaseline can work too I guess because it’s petroleum right?
Thanks for the great simple common sense explanation and video. One question: to lube the gasket, what kind of household type products could I use? petrolium jelly? WD-40, water-based lubricant? lithium grease, etc? Or would I need the product you used?
Avoid anything petroleum based since it will cause the rubber to swell up. You can just get some silicone brake lube or dielectric grease at any auto store. They may even carry O-ring specific lube and that would probably be the best to use.
This worked for me ... Thank you
You sound like Bob Odenkirk.
Thanks. Never would have thot to do this.
I have a doubt. As I understood, there is a vacuum pressure inside the tank, which means the pressure outside the fuel cap is bigger. So, if the cap didn't seal correctly, there will be air entering the tank, right?
I mention this because there is something really weird happening in my car. It randomly fails to keep accelerating even tho I have the pedal fully pressed and it happens only in hot weather in sunny days (20°C and more). I suspected the problem comes from the EVAP system when I removed the fuel cap in a hot sunny day and I heard a "whoosh" coming from the filler neck - which, as I understood, would be most likely air entering the tank, since there is a vacuum pressure inside it.
Any insight will be very appreciated.
Hopefully you've figured this out by now, but there's supposed to be that "whoosh" when removing the cap if the vehicle has been run recently (which is why I think I need to lube or replace the gasket on one of our vehicles that isn't doing that).
Seems like your issue is something else. Check the OBDII for codes to help get you in the right direction (many auto parts places will do this for you for free). Try to figure out if it is the engine or the transmission. And do the simple things first, like cleaning/replacing the air filter, checking the fluid levels, seeing if you have any drips or even gunk on the bottom of the car, and looking around in the engine compartment for anything that is disconnected (especially small vacuum lines, or the big air intake). There's tons of things it could be, but start with the big things.
It would probably take a lot more troubleshooting if it was something small, like a bad temp sensor or a leaking seal somewhere.
@@giro994 thanks for your response. Just for the record, I searched for codes with no success and replaced spark plugs, injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, solenoid purge valve, EVAP canister, air filter and TPS sensor and none of these actually worked solving the problem. I also cleaned the throttle body. The car was "usable", so in the meanwhile I had to use the car anyways and learn to live with the problem while I think of another solution. The thing is, the day of oil change arrived, so I pulled an "engine flush plus" from Liqui Moly and replaced the oil. Since then, the problem dissapeared completely. Maybe there was some gunk stuck somewhere inside it, I don't really know...
@@felipemunoz4177 Good that it is working for you now. I was thinking to check the oil and automatic transmission levels, and how clean that transmission fluid is. But that would be if it wasn't shifting right.
When a friend gave me a 3000gt a decade ago that had a bad engine knock and was failing CA emissions, after getting gas to drive it home it didn't feel right so I didn't jump back onto the freeway. It was barely idling, and spewing smoke. After he had it towed back to his house, I checked it out for a couple days, looking at all sorts of things like you did. In the end it turned out that part of the air handling after the mass airflow sensor had come undone when I downshifted getting off the freeway. It was a simple thing of just reconnecting it. But with it disconnected, a different amount of air was getting in than the computer thought there way, so once the car warmed up and was using these sensors it just ran terribly.
I had it for a while after that, but the head gasket was already having some issues, and when I drove it hard up the mountain after taking it to the DMV I think I finished off that head gasket. I had too many projects to do, so ended up selling it (with full disclosure), but still wish I had kept it and replaced the head gasket myself. It was a fun car.
@@giro994 sometimes the smallest things causes the biggest problems. I never faced this problem before and it was actually driving me nuts, I mean come on... I replaced just about everything. The car not showing me any codes was odd, and now I know where to start looking if another car has these symptoms. Maybe worth to note, I was using Mobil Super 3000 5w30 and replaced it with Liqui Moly New Generation Molygen 5w30 and the car is now running really nice.
Thank you!
God bless
Can you use petroleum jelly
Yes
@@proclaimliberty2000 have a follow up question. I cleaned the seal ring, took it off wiped it, wiped the cap, nothing was really dirty but did it anyway. Then put a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the ring then put it back on. Been a few days and the check engine light hasn't come back but I noticed my average mile per gallon on the odometer has gone down, now it shows beteer 13-15 mpg. Since the check engine light hasn't come back could there be a different issue now? I know there could be but what would be the most likely issue if any.
Thanks
@@MistahBroccoli Gas mileage is commonly affected by oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor or an EGR valve.
@@proclaimliberty2000 thank you for the response. Would either of those cause trigger the check engine light?
@@MistahBroccoli Yes. You could take it to an auto parts store and have them check it with a diagnostic scanner which they will perform for free and see if it shows any stored trouble codes. How many miles do you have on the vehicle and has the mass airflow sensor ever been cleaned?
Great.👍
