Thanks brother for uploading this video, it is very helpful in my current situation with my car. I have a Toyota corolla 2008 model that had a problem in the fuel pumping system. I thought there was a blockage in the fuel injector line or something else. Now I realized there was dirt surrounding the fuel cap like yours. I'll change my fuel cap and I hope my car runs smoothly! Thanks again and stay blessed🙂
Great explanation. My wife's car got a p440 error code. I checked her cap and it seems really loose but the thing that convinced it was bad was the tell tale discorlation you mentioned. I was wondering why that area was always dirty as hell. Thanks dude !
@@Pinkielover Yes. It's funny because I saw this video the day before I had that truck into the shop for an oil change. They saw the code and wanted to make the whole situation a major operation using smoke etc. I told them no I'll take care of it. I swapped the cap and it did the trick. The tell tale sign was the black residue all over the outside of where the cap is and inside the door as well. Swap the cap ....it's a cheap attempt and you probably need a new one anyway.
Yup this might be my problem! I have the P0441 evap incorrect purge flow code check engine light. Went to Firebone and they replaced two parts and still couldn’t get the check engine light off. Firebone is a big rip off. So I’ll try a new and better gas cap. I still have the original cap from my 2013 dodge avenger se and I had to clean the inside of the gas cap area too.
thanks, man. just got engine light come on and code is p0442 (evap small leak). checked gas cap and the ring is full of cracks. so I'm thinking change the cap and hopefully engine light will go off in a few miles. thanks again.
Thanks for giving details and specifics. During an inspection, I was told the cap needed replacing (on a low-mileage, 1999 Lumina). I had the impression they were trying to upsell me, and in the end they didn't replace it, but passed the car anyway. But, if it really needs it, I want to replace it. I suspect the cap is the original, as it still has its tether connecting it. When you replaced yours here, did you just cut that tether? Anyway, thanks again.
I was getting a check engine light, and the code was 0442. The light was reset. And the code kept coming back. Then while driving, I started to smell fuel vapor. The code was for a small EVAP leak. The gas cap was original and on a 2006 Ford. I found cracks in the seal on the gas cap, and a crack in the EVAP system hose that runs from the gas tank to the charcoal canister. I replaced the hose, the gas cap, and the evap purge valve. The light has not come back on, and there are no more fuel vapors while driving.
Just for future video's it would have been nice if you used a flashlight etc to shine on the o-ring to give us a better view. It was straight to the point so A1
I hoped this was my issue so I bought a new cap and turns out the new cap was faulty and wouldn't seal lol. Bought a new one and works great, check engine is off too. Thanks for the help.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! My check engine light has been on and I do have the original cap on my 2004 Impala. Been terrified that I was facing major car repair! I also have that smudgy stuff all over. Thanks for posting! :)
Hey! I am having this issue with my car! My car starts but sometimes it doesn’t crank up right away. The service engine light is on as well! Would the bad cap cause this problem to?
Yeah I'm having this problem with my 07 Audi A4 it seems like every time I'm done pumping gas my car had problems starting but when I first start my car it doesn't have a problem starting
I have a 2004 subaru Impreza 2.5RS with 200k on the body and 60k on the engine swap. My car keeps throwing the code P0457 (Evap control system leak - detected (fuel cap loose/off) when I inspect the fuel cap it doesn’t seem to have any cracks on the seal and looks ok condition. I’m gonna start with a new fuel cap from a parts store and see if not do you have any other ideas on what it could be? @@blackericdenice ok I took my gas cap off a few minutes ago and it had some nasty stuff around the threads I’m cleaning it now and gonna clear the code and if not imma try a new gas cap then go for the vent valve next
But OBDII P0442 code what means? I have a KIA RONDO 2012 yr, 4 cyl. The check engine is on after error code erased. I changed the gas cap w/new one KIA. Very expensive in Canada. I can't fix the problem yet. Now I'm looking for a canister purje valve to be changed but I'm not sure yet. In EVAP system to fix the problem must waist a lot of $$$$.
I have 442. It's emissions fault. I took mine to the Chevy dealer and they couldn't fix it. Cost me $175.00 so my engine light is still on. I am gonna replace my cap and purge valve next month.
Thanks for the video. Recently bought a truck and noticed how odd the gas cap area was dirty. Going to go get me a new cap for sure haha even though I just bought a cheapo at autozone since I ended up losing the original (it felt loose anyways).

@@blackericdenice i figured it out!!!! The inlet of the filler has a bent metal flap, and has a broken thread!! Which is most likely the cause of the p0 453 code...or maybe its 452, either way i ordered the part..im sure its the reason.
I have the gas cap warning message and check engine light for a while. Now my car is sputtering and misfiring scan tool detects a large Evap leak. Could a gas cap cause such a problem or is it something else like the evap valve?

@@blackericdenice I get an engine check light on occasionally (months apart) and I fiddle with the gas cap and the light will disappear in a day. I do not know if that is the cause of the check engine light or not (coincidence?). One day (the light was off) I was at Autozone and they plugged in and found one 'Historical Code' P0327 knock sensor. No correlation. Anyway, today I took the gas cap off and just cleaned everything on the cap and rim of filler pipe. The only thing I had handy was some ATF so I used a little of that and a rag. The cap does not have an o ring, instead it has some kind of flat plastic seal. Also there is some kind of spring in the cap (not sure what it does) but getting a little ATF in there loosened that up too. The spring seems to have to do with twisting the cap, not applying pressure to the seal? There seemed to be a very very tiny amount of crud near the rim of the filler tube. Seemed too small to make a difference. Bottomline, maybe just some dirt is causing (very) intermittent check engine light. Hoping knock sensor is not an issue. No check engine light on now, but it was not on before I cleaned the cap, etc. either. 2010 chevy cobalt. Original cap, first time I ever looked/cleaned it.
I consider myself pretty familiar with mechanics and cars that I still have a lot to learn. This is never been explained to me that good to know
