Classic game I remember watching dad play Metroid when it first came out. He would always rage quit and I always expected him to bash his head through the tv. Good times.
I grew up playing this game. I remember making a map for it so I could beat it quickly as possible to get the best ending. Would love to see Metroid as a movie!
Zero Mission is possibly one of the best remakes ever made. Damn how I miss 2D Metroid... yeah we got one not too long ago, but I hope we get another one.
Zero Mission should have had a secondary mode like this. Just a total recreation of the original Metroid with better sprites and improved gameplay. I'm glad this person used Super Metroid to make it though. I need to download this.

I noticed this one lets you keep both beams at once and fires faster. That would make the game a bit easier. The Ice Beam in the original has limited use because you shoot so slowly the faster-moving enemies can escape in between freezes, and you always have to double back to get another Ice Beam before confronting Tourian. Nice job though. :)
This playthrough is so awesome to watch. It makes me think about the SNES and if there was a Metroid All-Stars, akin to the Super Mario All-Stars, this could have been the remake for the SNES.

I like how there's little subtle changes here and there to make the game more enjoyable yet it still gives it that NES Metroid feel (aspect ratio, play mechanics, slowdown, etc).

This really show the scale differences between Metroid and Super Metroid. Quite interesting to see how Samus has either grown or the world around her shrunk between games.
It shows they can dress the same game up, update some graphics, change the name and sell *the exact same story and map* over and over and over again to *so* many people. They’re all the same story!

Plus, Metroid feels more like you're walking through hallways with slight cavernous formations, while Super Metroid's Zebes looks more like an actual planet with caverns. Just because it *looks* the same, doesn't mean it *is* the same.
Having to choose between ice beam and wave beam was a mistake in the original NES version. Glad this version didn't repeat this mistake. For the Norfair and Ridley music, I'm not saddened they took SuperMetroid stuff since it was great. Nice version of Kraid's Lair music. That was my favorite in the original game.
Hahaha, it's baby Ridley! This is an interesting proof of concept, but it just makes me want Zero Mission, which was and is still awesome. What this demonstration makes me feel is a desire for Zero Mission, but with sharper graphics.
Hey so I'm having a little trouble with the audio. I can't seem to get the sound as clean as yours. The title screen music is crackling pretty bad and if I turn the sample rate up to 196k or something higher it causes a crash. Could you tell me what your audio settings are? I'm using the Mesen Retroarch Core btw but it shouldn't matter.

Doubt it. Miyamoto has gone on record saying how much he hates metroid. He has the same to say about F-Zero. Apparently to him those games are unimaginative and repetitive yet he loves to pump out multiple Mario bros and mario kart for every console. I know he's not in charge of all nintentos decisions but his voice still carries a lot of weight. Tbh I wish the senile old man would retire. As much as he's worshipped by nintendo fans the guy is really losing his mind.
And honestly nintendo as a whole is a company that exploits their fanbase and shows how much distain they have for us. They've always been a monster. I get them being credited for saving the gaming industry but their monopolistic ways have damaged it more than anything over the early years. Luckily now their influence is minimal as a whole and are just catering to the casual crowd. Shamefully their base is willfully ignorant to the abusive and exploitive nature of the company.
FWIW, the NES didn't use square pixels. Long story short, this video is about 12.5% too narrow, and the HD graphics (fortunately) assumed a 4:3 aspect ratio, rather than the "emulator default" of 256:240. If you do more of these, hopefully there's a way in Mesen to fix the aspect ratio.
This is built on top of Metroid Mother, right? It doesn’t have the different tiles for breakable blocks that Mother had… it’s still my preferred way of going back to Metroid 1, but it would be perfect if it could be included.
Yeah, I got lost all the time, I remember my older brother taking graph paper and mapping out the whole game (remember the map in super metroid, his map was like that except on paper), then he played it after spending months mapping it and was finally able to beat it

No, the ips patch files seem to combine them. Nice catch, though. For me as a newb, I definitely like how they combine as it made it easier for me. Since then, I've been able to beat the original Metroid on native hardware and it prepared me.

But that isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as the game is still fun). They're more elitist than Half Life 2 fans
It's unfortunate that many cool rom hacks such as these require the use of the inferior NES version of Metroid instead of the Famicom one. The latter one had better console specs in order to improve things such as random enemy behavior. Ridley in particular is a more challenging boss in the Famicom version.
While it makes sense to use Super Metroid assets (after all, it's the same planet on Metroid and Super Metroid), at same time, it takes down the distinction between the two games. I prefer mods that makes Metroid 1 look slightly better, while maintaining the old 8bit look to is, instead of playing this way, which looks like a tunned down map on Super Metroid.
