  • A new version of the Metroid "HD" mod for the Mesen NES Emulator was just recently released. Keep in mind this is merely a mod and it will only work if users have a legitimate ROM of the NES game, Metroid. Also, the ROM must have a SHA-1 checksum of ecf39ec5a33e6a6f832f03e8ffc61c5d53f4f90b or the pack will not operate correctly.
    !!!IMPORTANT!!!
    This mod currently only works with the standalone version of Mesen 2. It is not yet compatible with Retroarch. Download Mesen 2 here:

      @kryptin420 Exactly what I was wondering; I never saw this secret on the original nes metroid; also when he gets kills himself at the bottom of the pit as a shortcut, he gets back with full energy tanks, and i never saw cumulative weapons (eg. ice wavy beam). The Kraid, Ridley and Mother Brain battles seems too easy too. Other than that, the animation is superb, and the music is quite fun to listen to.

    And I think the best way to go with item placement is to have two versions, one thats the same as the original, and one with remixed item locations and additional rooms. Have our cake and eat it too.
    If you really want to go balls to the wall, incorporate Zero Mission content into a separate version.

    • @NESGameFan
      @NESGameFan  6 месяцев назад

      Having a separate .ips file is under consideration with respect to the additional room in Brinstar. For anyone not wanting the room there, all that will probably be needed is a simple file swap. Maybe in the next rev. level. For anyone that would like to make it more default right away, there is a separate video on customizing room structure here: m.ruclips.net/video/VnEgGEjZdmE/видео.html. All that should be needed is an unbreakable block placed behind the ice beam to seal off the additional room. Everything else about the layout of the game is pretty much untouched.

They said yes. As I was moving everything over, I found out even more recently the ultimate tracks were from you. As a result, you are in the credits! Looks pretty and sounds great... but I need to question some of the redesigns. Why put Wave directly after Ice like that? And why allow beam-combo? It defeats the intended strategy of the original game. To me, this is just an "easy mode" hack rather than an upscale.

    • @NESGameFan
      @NESGameFan  6 месяцев назад +1

      @theeffete3396 Fair points. One big criticism of NEStroid is that many feel it's too difficult. So, a decision was made to make it a little more accessible in the default version. There's a separate video showing users how to adjust level layout and add or remove power ups depending on how much challenge is desired (ruclips.net/video/VnEgGEjZdmE/видео.html). If there is enough demand, it should be relatively easy to include a separate download with a more default layout. Also, it might be hard for many users to even know the additional powerups are even there without watching certain parts of this video ;)

      @NESGameFan  6 месяцев назад +1

      Might consider looking into that. I do know some folks are trying to find ways to get the pack on a CRT, though (which are more prone to cutting off things near edges). As a result, if we found a way to hack the ROM to move the HUD closer to the edges, it could cause other problems... maybe...

    • @spires655
      @spires655 5 месяцев назад

      Is it possible to graphically offset it higher by adding empty transparency pixels to the bottom and setting the origin spot for the swap higher? Just guessing.@@NESGameFan

    • @NESGameFan
      @NESGameFan  5 месяцев назад +1

      @spires655 There's not much wiggle room in the native 8x8 squares. The ideal option would probably be hacking the ROM to move the HUD up. With that said, it is possible to move the entire HUD up with just Mesen commands. However, that would probably be a lot of work. This is partly due to the fact that the HUD is constantly changing and shares sprites with other areas if the game. If it was a static HUD and if there were no shared sprites it wouldn't be so bad. Also, because of the fact a lot of coding would be required to pull it off, it could also negatively affect performance and the pack might run a bit slower.

    FINALLY, the update I wanted Nintendo to make for the Super NES back in the '90s! I'll have to download it at some point!
    But you should have edited the video to eliminate the areas where you were stuck for a couple minutes, it makes you look like a weak player! 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

    does the JUSTIN BAILEY code still work in this, its not the original metroid to me unless the option to use suitless samus exists as it was and how i always liked playing the original. the suitless samus sprite was unique and i think better than the original crappy power suit design which always looked like a motocross outfit with a big helmet.

      The MOD swaps the password system with a save system. So, no code. But, a non armor version is in the pack... Just fast forward to just after credits. And as far as skipping to the non armor version, I suppose people could always share save files and save states.

    • @jescis0
      @jescis0 6 месяцев назад

      The Famicom Disk System version didn't have suitless as an option… this'll be an improvement in that regard… but the save feature WAS in the OG Famicom Disk System version of "Metroid" 😉😉🫣🫣

    I'm on the fence about the music... it's too smooth and too soft. the harsher sound of the original... is what I want to hear.

    • @NESGameFan

      If music isn't to your liking, customization is relatively easy with the pack. There's a separate video on it. Mostly just a simple .ogg file swap.

    Wasn't the biggest fan of the SM screw attack sound, unfortunate that not only does it play here, but it persists even if you stop.
    Also was hoping the metroids would be a bit bigger, heck the rinkas were terrifying by comparison!

    • @NESGameFan
      @NESGameFan  6 месяцев назад

      There is a bundled alternate sound effect folder. All that's needed is a simple .ogg file swap. Granted, Screw Attack is not among the assets that have a different version.... but maybe a future rev level could have an alternate option for that particular effect if there is enough demand.

    • @Ragesauce
      @Ragesauce 6 месяцев назад

      @@NESGameFan cool, hopefully it is added in the future. The original isn't the best either, tbh almost every screw attack sound is pretty annoying. Zero mission isn't terrible, and as long as it stops when Samus isn't spinning its not so bad.

      If the default music isn't to your liking, customization is relatively easy with the pack. There's a separate video on it. Mostly just a simple .ogg file swap. 8 bit and 16 bit variants are among the options included in the pack.

      @@NESGameFan oh I love the original 8-bit score. Especially more how they re: orchestrated remixes for later games. Sorry I wasn't trying to be mean, but that remix changes the dynamic. Original focus more towards so you feel the intensity of the atmosphere while the remix draws it away, probably to represent a huge cave. Great for exploration game, bad for action run and gun. It's just a small opinion, but it is good to know you can change the bgms.
