Ahh Melanie ham 😢 I, like you, came into quilting during the pandemic so a lot of the famous quilters you see and hear about are no longer with us, Nancy Zieman is one of those . I found her videos so helpful. When I found out she had passed I was incredibly sad. Thank god we have all these videos and tutorials that they left behind to help us. Not a bad legacy!
😀 Hi there Karen hope You and your Family are all feeling good today 😊 Loving your tutorial On Binding you Explain everything so so well thank you very much for Sharing all of your Fantastic ideas 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞 hugs n 👄👄👄
I do the same, I use the backing scraps to make the binding for the quilt, it matches the backing and as the backing fabric is chosen to compliment the top layer of my quilt, it really suits it.
I have watched Binding the Basics a million times! Thank goodness I found you Karen, my binding was a disaster!! It is not so much my nemesis anymore, I am not fantastic at it yet, but I am definitely getting better and the 3 and 1 tool is amazing!! Thank you!!!!
Perfect timing! I've got 3 quilts to bind and always refresh my memory about best ways to do that with your videos!! I have learned already to plan for my binding as I am making quilt! Thank you!
I do!! I had plenty of pieces left from my scrap quilt. In fact, I cut plenty of them first, since they needed to be wider than my border piano key border strips. I figured out how large the quilt would be, cut plenty of length, then put it all together, and used big stitch quilting on it. I did use a cream color flange to break up the business a bit. I will be doing the same with future next scrap quilts. I love my scraps, they are memories of clothes and quilts I've made for family members, and they're It's about the only type I make, anymore, maybe supplementing with similar themed fat quarters, in case I want it larger. I'm familiar with quilt math, so it's easy for me to figure how much I need.
@@koalamaster101 I made a quilt for my goddaughter. Her mother designated it as her daycare nap quilt. Well it was used daily and washed every other day. I have never had a quilt come apart before but this ones bindings came off in an area. My sweet goddaughter had a minor meltdown that all of the kisses that I put inside the quilt were leaking out. 😂 The teacher had no clue what she was crying about and I received a phone call shortly after. Needless to say there was an emergency quilt repair. And yes she had to watch me blow extra kisses into the quilt. (The teacher was so confused 😅). Lets say I re-sewed the entire binding on for no future melt downs. Hence my recommendation is to use a binding with minimum seams if it will be heavily used and laundered.☺ Good luck.
The binding does have the most friction. That why normally the joins are on a diagonal. If you are using straight seams on the joins use a smaller stitch. For any quilt, after lots of love, it's not unusual to replace/repair the binding. I watched a friend replace one last weekend
Just finished the Scraps playlist and found several in here I hadn't seen before -- and the others I had seen were good review. Thank you so much for these!
Love how you show diagrams/pictures of the variations! I hadn't thought of or noticed focal points on bindings before this video. Thanks for the idea! I made my first quilt in December and gave it away as a Christmas gift. I thought it needed an extra pop of colour, so I used the extra layer cake squares and cut strips to make the flange part on a flanged binding. It worked out beautifully! 💟
Brilliant!! I appreciate the diagrams of the different methods. Have you ever used crumbs to make binding? I've been using freezer paper strips to replicate your adding machine tape technique. I found out that "receipt paper rolls" are still widely available and cheap, and the standard size of 2.25 inches wide will be splendid for crumb piecing strips!
The main concern with binding out of crumbs would be how bulky it can get. The smaller your pieces the more seams you’ll have and the thicker the binding would be. I would plan to hand stitch the back of the binding if I were to do that because once it is folded over it might be to thick for the machine and/or running over that many seams will make it hard to stitch a straight line. I would probably also try it on a mini quilt first to get a feel for it.
Great tips Karen. Many times I have come to a join too close to a corner on the binding. Planning placement will save time fixing later. Echo binding method looks very effective, must try on the next non bordered quilt♥️🇦🇺
Fabulous ideas for using scraps in the binding! And I like your tip for preparing ahead for future quilt binding by sewing the trimmings of a current project and storing it as a roll, easy to grab and use later.
I personally love scrappy binding, but haven’t ventured there yet. I’m fairly new at quilting but I’ll be sure to do one in the future. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Binding scares me; I've done 2 crib quilts that were self-bound (or is that self-binded?), and 2 quilted cat blankets for our SPCA (wherein I learned that it ain't easy). I'm going in, all ahead full and damn the torpedoes! Thank you, Karen, for breaking down the monumental into manageable. Much love from a newbie in New Brunswick.
Karen have you ever made a double binding? It looks really pretty, but I'm not sure how it's done. I love your videos, by the way. Lots of great tips that I've used in my projects. Thank you for taking the time to make these wonderful tutorials. 🥰💕
Such a great video!!! I am currently working on a quilt that will highly benefit from a scrappy binding instead of a boring, one color binding. Thank you so much for these ideas! You are so creative and a wonderful instructor
Great ideas. Good use of scraps. I have used this idea when I have some binding fabric that matches the quilt top but not enough. I used coordinating or contrasting scraps to add a few more inches to the middle of the binding in 1 or 2 places and line it up on the quilt. I have used it in the corners or on the sides. It can add interest to one corner or 2. Thanks.
Perfect timing! I’ve spent today taming my own Mount Scrapmore, and I was amazed at how much fabric I had! it’s all been sorted by colour, and I’ve already used it for several metres of binding. Thanks for sharing such great tips!
These were some brilliant ideas. I have done scrappy bindings but hadn’t thought of all these ideas! You truly give me more food for thought every time I watch one of your videos and I’ve been quilting for thirty years!!!
I'm not as dumb as I thought! I'm making quilts for my grandbabies. I use the same pattern, a jelly roll pattern and from the 1st one I used scraps for the binding. I'm on my 3 quilt with 4 and 5 on deck! Thanks for your videos!
I have been doing this for years. I am glad that I am in good company and not the only one who does this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us in your videos.
So the Echo sounds so fun, especially since the quilt I am working on is a wash of colors, but since this is my first full quilt (I don't count the one from my teenaged years, or the tree skirt), I don't think I will try it yet. Someday!
Please come to sister sew weekend. We need your help. Lol. I finished the top and need to boarder and bind. Your such a great teacher. I love how you explain.
Thank you for all the hard work that goes into developing a video. I am not a quilter, but I make handbags and other items that use binding and I love the idea of using scraps😊 Your videos are professionally done.
Karen, this is great, as far as it goes. But what do you have for those of us that prefer bias bindings? I don't want my recipients to have to deal with a straight-of-grain binding that has grown worn and frayed before its time.
Can you show how to do the math to add yardage as blocks to a block from a panel? I bought a Makower Hedgerow panel along with the beautiful collection of fabric to match. I would like to make large rectangle blocks and square blocks to go along with the lovely panel blocks. But i get confused whether to add 1/2 inch to one block when joining sashing etc to match up panel block size.....what did i get myself into?
I think I have watched most of your binding tutorials. In one of them, you had a brown tool for matching the binding, one strip was face up and the other was face down. The two strips were joined at 90 degree angel. What is that tool and can it be purchased? Thank you for the wonderful tutorials!
Thank you for this wonderful video on combining scraps for binding. Something I've thought about and maybe will try. My binding scraps contain a mix of bias and straight. Do you recommend sequestering those different types from each other?
Another great video!! Would you ever consider doing a series similar to your video “ memories of a churn dash”? I don’t have access to a guild but would loved to be challenged to make more interesting modern quilts and blocks and to get out of my color comfort zone.
I taught Beginning quilting for many years. The first thing I told these new quilters was, “some new quilters come out of the class at a run, sewing blocks that are near perfect. Others it will take practice, but I guarantee if you love the process, enjoy working with cloth, you too, at one time will “be near perfect”. “ However, remember no matter what, your creation IS A Quilt, ready to snuggle in, or ready for a new grandbaby to feel the love their Grandma made to keep them snuggled, a treasure for always, and believe me, babies do not know or care how perfect the seems are or if the corners match.” Just enjoy the process. ❤
Me too!! I do a mix of pattern quilts and scrappy quilt. For the scrappy quilts I use up all the left over bindings from all my pattern quilts. Usually the scrappy quilts go to kids and they love the scrappy binding as well 😊
Ahh Melanie ham 😢

Today is National Quilting Day. Who knew we had a day dedicated to our craft. Have fun my fellow quilting friends.
Karen, it never dawned on me to use the shower curtain rod on the tub in my spare bathroom! Thanks, so much. See you tomorrow evening.

I have a Rowento. I like it. I do love how the Oliso lifts. The quilt in jewel tones is beautiful. It's on my list 😊
I love a scrappy binding! Thank you for the new tips in Methods 3 and 4. I frequently use the backing scraps to make the binding for the quilt.
I do the same, I use the backing scraps to make the binding for the quilt, it matches the backing and as the backing fabric is chosen to compliment the top layer of my quilt, it really suits it.
I mix leftover backing scraps with other scraps I've cut of the front scraps. And yes, it all works together.☺️
I have watched Binding the Basics a million times! Thank goodness I found you Karen, my binding was a disaster!! It is not so much my nemesis anymore, I am not fantastic at it yet, but I am definitely getting better and the 3 and 1 tool is amazing!! Thank you!!!!
So glad to hear. I’ve been using it a lot myself the past week
Perfect timing! I've got 3 quilts to bind and always refresh my memory about best ways to do that with your videos!! I have learned already to plan for my binding as I am making quilt! Thank you!
I love your channel , will you have a serie how to use scrap to make pouches ? boxed pouch 😊❤️

Oh I was just thinking about how to do this!!! Thank you Karen as always for providing the best quilting videos on YT.
Due to the increasing number of seams, would this still be appropriate for quilts expected to have "lots of love? I'm afraid of it falling apart.

Nice ideas for scrap & binding.
Ms Brown love your videos I binge watch them I have learned so much
These are great tips, and I have to ask why I didn't come up with some of these myself. Thanks for keeping practical and easy.
This is extremely helpful for me. Thank you so much for posting this.

I did not know there were so many ways to make a good binding. This little video was packed full of great information for me. Thanks!
Fabulous ideas for using scraps in the binding! And I like your tip for preparing ahead for future quilt binding by sewing the trimmings of a current project and storing it as a roll, easy to grab and use later.

Awesome idea
I feel you've opened a whole new binding world for me. Thank you
Yes, another rabbit hole to go down. It can add a twinkle to a quilt but often at the end it's hard to be inspired. I hope this helps

I love your presentation style. It is easy to understand for a beginner like me, and gives many ideas.
Just did my first scrappy binding for my jelly bargelly pattern- a bit busy but happy to use all the scraps.
Hello, how are you?
Love this video especially the color wash design for binding. Never thought about it. It is an unique way to guide the eye. Thank you
Perfect timing! I’ve spent today taming my own Mount Scrapmore, and I was amazed at how much fabric I had! it’s all been sorted by colour, and I’ve already used it for several metres of binding. Thanks for sharing such great tips!
Again, I absolutely love your design instruction that goes with all your videos!

Hello Donna, how are you?
Very interesting tutorial. Thank you.
The amount of time you have put into this video is amazing! Thank You for such a valuable video.
I appreciate your tips on choosing colors.
Hahaha. I loved seeing you dig through your scrap drawer! Looks so familiar!
Love these tips and tricks. FYI - Donna Jordan is showing patterns with ‘an after quilt’ pieced back. You’ve started a trend.
Hello, how are you?
You always have great ideas. Thanks for being creative so I don't have to !!! Lol

Ty, Karen! You gave me the info I definitely need now so I don't need to throw a lit match in the room to solve this scrap tsunami.
You are a genius!
Great video, Karen! Have a great day on this World Quilting Day. Blessings to you.
This video is great…as are all your videos. Can’t wait to try these out!
Hello, how are you?
I have been doing this for years. I am glad that I am in good company and not the only one who does this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us in your videos.
I do that, too, and group the fabrics by colour.

Awesome! Thank you so much for these videos 💕 Not only am I learning, but once again you inspire the creative spirit!!
Thank you for sharing this. Also thank you for making your “old” videos easy to refer back to in the future. Happy quilting day!
Thank you Mary. I am glad they were useful

It’s a jig I designed
Thanks in was wanting to so it but I was sooooooo strugling about how to do It!!
It's nice to use up those last scraps
Thank you for this. Food for thought for the next one.

Maybe. I was talking with Prequilt the other day about doing another challenge
Great tutorial! thanks a whole bunch!
Fantastic! Thank you!
What is that rule about imperfections in a quilt? Something about, " They only count if they are visible while riding by on a horse at full gallop"!
I taught Beginning quilting for many years. The first thing I told these new quilters was, “some new quilters come out of the class at a run, sewing blocks that are near perfect. Karen, I love the quilt behind you! Is there a pattern?

Your tips are as fsntastic as you!!! Thanks!!! 🌹🌹🌹🇧🇷
You're so welcome!
Great ideas! 😃
Glad you like them!
I’m really bad for making too much binding, so I have a basket of leftovers to use later lol.

Where can I buy the tool you used for turning the corners? I checked some of the links you provided but didn't see it.

Hello, how are you?
What modal of Bernina do you use?
i have a 750 and a 30 year old 910
