Karen you make the most useful quilting videos on the internet:) Thank you again for an excellent roundup of stuff I need to further consider. I'd love to see your take on minky backed quilting best practices for having it look and feel the absolute best, maybe with a few options for the minky challenged such as myself. I love it and would like to use it more often. And I'm never sure what batting to use or if I should use it with minky. By the way your method of afterquilting has revolutionized my scrap use.
Very interesting Karen! I'd like a specialty fabric backing episode please, with some attention paid to flannelette strategies. Thanks for all you teach me ☺
Me, too!
Me too!
Me, too. Thank you.
Me too!
Me too!!
My #1 Tip for sewing with minky is don't sew with minky.
I’d love a tutorial on other types of backing. I either use 108” backing or flannel sheets as the sheets are pre shrunk so I don’t have to worry about the flannel shrinking too much.
I love flannel sheets & I am always searching thrift stores for flannel sheets, especially the flat, king sized sheets.
Yes! Please do a video on the specialty backing fabrics! Thanks for all you do and I hope you’re feeling better now.
That’s the first time someone’s laid out the thread count differences in quilter’s cottons, batiks, and bed sheets for me! Thank you.
I've used sheets for backing for 2 quilts. One was finished in 1990 and the other in 1999. No problems so far.
Both quilts were hand quilted. I prewashed them.
Oh, That’s right, I forgot about this hack. Thanks for the reminder. That’s exactly what I’m going to use. Thank you again.❌⭕️🙏🏽♥️
Whenever I find a beautiful fabric that I think will make an excellent quilt back, especially if it is on sale, I purchase it and put it in my backings stash. That way it is not an additional expense when I finish my quilt top. I usually choose the back when I begin the quilt, and that way if I dont have one, I can look for one I like that is on sale while I make the quilt. It takes me longer than most to make a quilt, so this works for me. I think backs are very important and should be pretty enough so that the quilt is reversable.
Agreed 👍
I love piecing my quilt backings! I use the leftover fabric from the quilt top and combine that with coordinating fabric from my stash. Sometimes my backings are more interesting than the quilt tops! I find that piecing the backing is fun and I feel good that I’m saving money!
Me too. I do it most of the time.
It's a great place to use those wonky blocks too that didn't make the cut.
I just dye flat bedsheets. They're designed to wrap the bed, and I've never had trouble getting one big enough!
Yep me too. A duvet cover and a sheet breaks down perfectly into a quilt top and a backing
I try to use up scraps from the front on the back.
Often I widen the backing fabric to the needed size by adding a row of scraps running down the middle.
Thank you very much Karen for your great video, it is always a pleasure to watch and learn 👍
Greetings from Germany
I use sheets all the time doing QAYG. Works great and reminds me of the quilt backs on some of the quilts my grandmother made using feed sack fabric. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for sharing!
I would love a video on minky and flannel, thank you😊
Hi Karen, Lynne here. This video was very helpful, and I would love to see a tutorial video about using flannel and fleece as backings. My biggest question about those is do I need to use batting with them? Many thanks for all you do for the quilting community. ~~ Hugs!
I used cuddle fleece on the back of a lap quilt without using any batting. I love it. It drapes and wraps around me much better than a quilt with batting.
I’ve used flannel for a QAYG project and it turned out great.
I used the lightest, thinnest batting I could find for a flannel quilt (both sides flannel). I believe it was Dream cotton “Request”.
I don't use batting when using a fleece blanket ... I glue baste my top and blanket together using Elmer's school glue ... works well!
My favorite backing to add warmth is fireside fleece. It has a nap and a bit of stretch and comes in 60 and 80 inches wide. I quilt with my domestic machine and have quilted up to a king size with fireside on the back. It is heavier than cotton, but i have found it much easier to quilt than minky and still gives you a cozy, comfy quilt. I do use batting with fireside as well.
The best thing that happened to me as a quilter, during 2020, was challenging myself to your "afterquilt"! Thanks so much for your clear instructions and constant encouragement!
You are so welcome!
Last night, I finished my first quilt with a pieced backing (after quilt). Never again. It was a hot mess and I'm just glad it was the back. I'll stick with a solid backing and find another use for the leftovers.
I used leftover fabric to make a pieced back for my very first quilt last year, not realizing the potential challenges. Thankfully, with help from an experienced quilter, it turned out great! Love your videos, encouragement, and style of teaching!
What about beach towels? Especially for baby blankets …soft and absorbent for those newborn surprises 😮!
I had actually thought about doing this for summer Quilts because I think they would be heavy ( which I like) but cool and breathable. The problem was big cotton towels are expensive and I couldn't find the Terrycloth by the meter where I live. In the end it would be way more expensive than normal batting.
I don't know though if the little loops in the fabric would interfere with the quilting or even get pulled through the outer fabrics. Still, if I ever find some really cheap on sale I will definitely try it! 😊
@@pollyanna8473 At the end of summer the towels often come on sale at department stores.
Yes please. Long-awaited first grandchild is on the way! I've got a panel that she wants me to back with minky.
I love flat, king sized, flannel sheets.😊
What a great idea! 😳
Backing fabric is a huge expense. If I can, I get a 108 so I need less yardage-- but there isn't as much choice in colors or design. I just had to shell out $90 for backing fabric for a queen sized quilt bc I got a 44" fabric. That's the biggest reason I sometimes skimp on how much bigger than my quilt top it is. So far, I've gotten away with it! 😂
For sure! 99% of my quilts have widebacks
I agree. A wide back on sale is definitely a money-saver. Even if not on sale, it usually is less expensive.
Yes, yes! A tutorial on working with minky… please, pretty please
Unfortunately bamboo is not recommended here in Canada as our vast changes in temperature and humidity will cause bamboo to warp over a few years. Learned this the hard way.
I love your afterquilts. I was going to try it. i quilt by hand. However, i decided to buy a wide piece of fabric for the backing. It was so much easier.
I am a new quilter. I haven’t made many quilts at all. The ones I have made are usually baby quilts with stitch in the ditch or simple line quilting. I do love to watch your lessons. You have a calm voice without a lot of silliness or time spent seeking expensive things all through the video. I have learned a lot from you but also realize I need many more lessons, lol. I would love to see more about minky backings please.
Wait we can use sheets as a backing? Well my mind just blown 😐
Karen, I really enjoy your pleasant demeanor and helpful information. It’s been years since I’ve quilted but just watching your videos is always inspiring. 😊☕️🍩
Me too! I love the easy tone and softness of her voice.
Yes please Karen make a tutorial on Minky for sure. I am tired of dozens of opinions that do not help. You ALWAYS help. Thanks again
Karen, you are so great! OF COURSE we would like a video about specialty fabrics...PLEASE! You do such an awesome and detailed instruction! You answer questions I do NOT even think to ask! Thank you again for these great videos.
Thanks for the great information. Yours is always trustworthy 😊
Hello from Florida
I got into quilting during covid19 shutdown and as time went on, I made some adjustments during my quilt sandwich approach.
I prefer an old technique of hand tying instead of traditional quilt stitching patterns.
And I don't bind, I use the flip inside out technique that I learned from Donna Jordan.
Backing...in the past I have purchased yardage to compliment my top, always using cotton. Lately, I have been using queen or king flat sheets from a thrift store and love it.
Living in Florida, the quilts need to be light enough for year round use.
I really enjoy watching your videos and I get inspired and educated.
Thanks, Michael Fedele
Would definitely appreciate a video or two on specialty fabric. I quilted with fleece many times on my domestic with no issues. Then I got my long-arm and I over tightened. It was not a great result.
Yes yes! I loved this video & would love a specific one for specialty fabrics! Thank you
My son's absolute favorite quilt was one he got with a flannel back, I'd love to get a slightly more detailed video about specialty backs...
Used flat sheets for backs since the early 1970’s, before the advent of 108” fabric. I will use the extra fabric of the back trimmed and folded over to the front to form a faux binding. I just add real binding if/when the edge starts to show wear.
More great tips on getting 'it' done. Yes, I too would like a video on specialty backing fabrics; as they do look rather a challenge.
Thanks for your tips and tricks - Cheers from Australia.
Thanks to you Karen, almost all of my quilts feature fun pieced backs. I love using up leftovers, a s giving the back some love too!
I won't deal with piecing a backing. I just get 108" fabric.
I love the fact that I learned after quilts from you. I have done many many many after quilters and love them. I really don’t worry about “straight backs” if there are lines a on them it’s part of the fun! Thank you Karen
I've never used minky for a backing but would like to try. A video with some tips would be helpful. 😊 thanks for your tutorials Karen!
Great tips Karen. So many options for backing. Great to make a decision and "just get it done". 😂👏♥️🇦🇺
I have a problem using polyester and other man-made fabric if they are in a fire they melt and could stick to the skin😢.
Yes! I don't understand using synthetics at all. Minky and fleece get staticky and feel oily to the touch. Makes me cringe!
Yes, please make a video on Minky for he backing.
I would definitely love to see a specialty fabric video!!! Your videos are so helpful! Thank you! (Also, what’s “nap”? Maybe you can explain in the specialty fabric video.)
I would love a video about specialty fabrics for backing. I’m thinking about backing my current project with minky or flannel. I quilt by hand, so tips on hand quilting minky or flannel would also be appreciated.
Karen, please do video on speciality fabric. Thank you 😊
I just love your videos and you! Wonderful info, encouragement and a certain spark that makes me want to watch more. I would have quilted more if I’d found you years ago!
Another great video but don’t make one on specialty fabrics for me because no way will I ever use any of those fabrics 😂. Thank you very much, I will stick to quilting cotton…. Can’t wait for your next video…
Would love a video on specialty fabric backings. I saw I video with beach towels used as the backing . (?)
I use Robert Kaufman Quilting Calculator
You always have great information. I always look forward to your various interviews as well. I like your interviewing technique.
Question, where did you get your sewing chair? What other information could you pass along about brand and style. It looks perfect.
Robert Kaufman has a quilting calculator app that can be downloaded to your phone.
Hi.. my first quilting had minky on the back. It got so frustrating that i used pressnseal to cut. After that i haven't tried anything other then 108 ' flannel and minky on my backs.
I know you said aligning backer print is an advanced skill. If you have borders on the back, how do you make them centered? The fabric moves so much, I can't get it even. Any suggestions
After years of piecing backs from 44 inches, I only use wide back for any quilt larger than 44 inches. I use temporary spray adhesive to sandwich the layers and then pin. Some people don't like using the spray. Some do. I've learned to buy quality fabric for the back.
I’m getting ready to make a baby quilt and have considered using minky for the back but I’ve never used it before. Do I need batting in addition? Best way to bind? Please do a video on specialty backings. Thanks for all your very helpful videos.
Thank you for teaching. I appreciate this video and loved the quilt at the beginning. Is there a pattern for it. Your choice if fabric is always so beautiful
Could you do a video on a french linen quilt. Whole cloth quilt with boarders?
😊You’re so fun to watch, Karen! I have pieces of beautiful leftover fleece and would like to use them for the back of a quilt. Is it possible to interchange large fleece squares with cotton squares for a pieced backing? Should I stabilize the fleece squares first?
It's like getting an unexpected gift when I see you have a new video. Thank you. I always love your tips, tricks, and strategies.
Awesome! Thank you!
I often use fleece blankets from Costco or Amazon on the back of winter quilts and omit batting ... I have found glue basting using Elmer's school glue works very well to baste my top and backing ... I let it dry overnight ... It has been suggested to me to use my serger on the cut edges of the backing ... I haven't tried this yet, but it reduces the amount of fluff flying around
Influencer ads drive me nuts and generally when they come on I close the vid! However!! Yours is an exception!🤔 Love your new table that changes height so easily! Can you tell me the Model number of your desk? Also did the castors come with it or did you buy them separately? I do wish it came with a sewing machine well built in to lower the machine surface flush with the desk surface! Very informative video!
If using a flannel backing, do you recommend using batting? If so what kind? I am thinking of doing this for a quilt for my son who is always cold. Thank you for all you do!.
I would like a video about quilting minki on a long arm and or domestic machine. Thank you. Karen
I did a heavily pieced quilt backing once and I don’t want to say never again, but… it didn’t help that the top was t-shirts! It’s a beautiful quilt and I’ll love it forever but I wouldn’t do it again.
My grandma made us all quilts out of her old dresses, and she didn't use any batting, and the backing on mine was rough and scratchy, lol
Yes Karen to a video about specialty fabrics for backings. Your such a wealth of info, I feel grateful after each one you publish. Thank you for keeping your channel going.
Thank you for interesting video. I would love to know more about Minky type backing and flannel too. I have never used a sheet but with the price of fabric theses days i am thinking about it. 😊
why have I never thought to put the binding on back to front!!?? I used to hand stitch bindings, but I feel they are not as durable. So i began to machine bind, but did not like the inconsistency of my skill level to make the stitching look good and then just switched to a wavy stitch to avoid the obvious occasional uneveness. But I would not mind it so much if it were on the back. I will do this with my next quilt. Thanks!
I have purchased faux fir blankets on sale and used them for backings. They work great and the folks who get my quilts love them.
I have embroidered blocks , they do have batting and stabilizer , they do not have backing fabric. I need to add sashing between the blocks. Do I add batting before or after I sew on sashing. If after how do I attach the batting . When all is done and top completed I’m gathering stitch in the ditch to quilt it together .
Do you have to straighten the grain of the fabric before cutting material for a backing?
Love it! Oh and where is your Dustbuster from??
Karen, thanks for all your quilting tips and tricks for a new quilter! You have made it fun to learn quilting!
So much good advise I saved this video for sure. Thank You
Karen. What is that stool you are sitting on? It looks more comfortable than my stools.
Would love a video about flannel. Does it last through the years?
Minky video please! one of my oldest kits is all Minky. I feel I need to understand it better before starting it.
I used to just use sheets, but I'm starting to piece the backing too so I use up some fabric :D
thanks for this info. I always dread the back.
I bought the backing for my son’s queen sized quilt. Paid $100, after doing a video call because he was out of the country and was due back two weeks later and I wanted to get something he liked. When he returned he didn’t like it. I just asked him to give me $100 so I could buy another. After speaking to my quilt shop I mentioned that he didn’t like it. I was so surprised when they offered to take it back for a credit. I took 4 packets of the printable fabric in it’s place. I bought fabric which he liked at another place and I pieced it and hand quilted it in my chosen pattern. I also was able to match the three borders, front and back. And hand quilted everything. So far it is turning out great. I’m just going to do the binding, also hand sewing.
Thank you for the ( very extra) tips about the backs of quilts. I learned alot.I will be checking out the table also.❤
We also use doona covers for backing, we have a great op shop that donatethe covers that are all like new for charity quilts even if we had to buy them you get 2 backings out of each cover and are very economical.
Oh yes a video on stitching a minky or fleece backing would be great. I've got a commission for a quilt and they now want this fabric on the back instead of the addition of wadding! Yikes!!!
Specialty fabric video Yes! Please
I am old school. I just like I bleached cotton.
❤❤❤ this is so helpful! Thank you so much!
What a fun video! I do love your colorful quilts. I've been following advice about "After quilts". One of my lap quilts has a flannel backing. I split the fabric vertically (crazy cats) so that the middle section is horses, more cats. Thank you Karen for all the wonderful ideas! Marion
I normally buy 108” Kona white and dye to whatever color I want. Joann’s has it on sale for 8.99 at least once a year, I buy bolts then. I haven’t liked sheets, but probably because Grandma taught me to not use them.
Dyeing white Kona is a great idea! What dye product do you use? Do you have any bleeding afterwards? I'm intrigued.
@@cathybabnick7326 usually Jacquard iDye or Dylon. As long as I follow the directions, I’ve not had bleeding issues.
I have been using your afterquilt ideas for my backings. Love it.
Thanks for the info packed video of options as well as pros and cons of each! I avoid sheets due to the fraying. When people report their binding coming off in the wash, there’s usually a sheet for backing. Always enjoyed wideback muslin. Nice affordable neutral. Joann’s makes a premium one that’s soft.
When I started quitting just a couple years back I immediately made pieced backings I had sewed clothes and crafts and was always used to sewing up my scraps so it seemed only natural to do the same with a quilt such fun to do I enjoy it as much as the front
I was JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS a few hours ago!
I too wrestle with backs. I use up my scraps, making tumbler quilts, or Dresden quilts. Love your ideas also, always fun to learn something new.
I would love a video on flannel, etc backing.
Is quilt-back fabric (108”) interchangeable (the same as) “regular” quilt front/piecing fabric?
Some is. Some are looser weave.
Thank you Karen for another great informative video. I have learned so much from each and every one of your videos. Also, I had never thought of piecing my backs until I saw your first after quilt video. Now I do it often and it’s fun and eliminates more “stash fabric”.
Since doing your Declutter Challenge earlier this year, I have been making after quilts. Result - no leftover fabric to put in a box, magic!!! I feel in better control of my sewing room storage. 👍❤️
Wonderful!
Great backing video. Love your standing desk. Ergonomics is so important for quilting!
It’s one of those things that you didn’t know you needed…and there is no going back now
