I was set on picking one of these up anyways but you just confirmed my wants 10 fold, also great patches too. Subscribed!
Glad you came back with a review based on the new version. ❤
Thanks for watching ❤🙏
Your "Patch From Scratch" is way better than the presets that came with it IMO. I was disappointed when I first got it but I see how to make it sound better after watching this, thanks.
love the modal synths, I still want an argon8 for those modern deep house chord stabs
That reverb is nasty...guess I'll have to run it thru a PCM, SRV, or DEP.
Would love to see this kind of review of the Argon8 as well (if you have it)
Great video! One correction on the 8x - it's 61, not 49 keys. I've got it and I love the keybed. The space to the side is perfect for an iPad or a module (e.g. the Boutiques fit perfectly)
Yup, my bad! Thanks for watching ❤
Is the 49 keybes same quality as 61?
"Edge of The World" got me. I really want one of these. I want something living-room-portable haha.
Thanks! The Coablt5s, Hydrasynth explorer, or MiniFreak would be excellent portable options. The Cobalt8 is like 25lbs so it's portable'ish 🤣
@@TeftyMeems So it comes in at 12 lbs according to the all knowing internet overlords, which is pretty hefty for a 37 key. Probably feels incredibly durable haha. I definitely have any/all of the Hydrasynths on my radar. Mini keys drive me crazy though haha
@@remyvegamedia You're absolutely right! Not sure why I was thinking 20+ lbs. It's a sturdy keyboard. For the record, the keys feel fantastic on it! So if you don't mind the 12lbs, it's definitely an option.
I think ya like the cobalt
*checks notes* I think you're on to something 🤔
This is my first fully fledged synth and I love it, started using the modal skulpt SE for my dawless setup and then it was a breeze with the C8. It’s my opinion an preference and it’s way above the minilogue line
Definitely more flexible than the Minilogue. The Minilogues each have their own character, though. Congrats on an amazing first synth! Modal has some magic going on in the software department .... plus the keys feel incredible 🥰
I love the Cobalt8 and it feels and sounds great. I just don't like the small screen.
I think the envelope click from a short attack actually is intentional and not a bug. Since you can get that sort of sound from an analog synth with snappy envelopes I presume they intentionally wanted the same behavior. I don't have the cobalt anymore (thinking about reversing that decision...) but I would probably still find it annoying. Sometimes I have a hard time "tuning" the envelopes on my Moog Minitaur to to get a punchy attack that's not clicky.
So part of the reason I think it's a bug is it doesn't happen consistently. Like it doesn't happen with single notes, but after a few additional notes it'll start clicking (with a particular envelope algorithm). Thanks for watching!
Ok, I would love to know is this a good companion piece for the Hydrasynth. Or is it too similar? I do own a Hydrasynth it haven't used it enough yet to have really gotten a sense of it's overall pallette. I will be looking for something to pair with it. This is the one I have my eye on but am worried about overlap!
So yes, some overlap, but the general tone of the Cobalt is 'virtual analog' so all the oscillator algorithms are generally geared towards that lush analog vibe. You can definitely get that in the Hydrasynth, but it's got more options to go deep into wavetable territories. And the Hydrasynth has waaaayyy more modulation options. But the Cobalt has a lot of "sweet spots" which makes it super easy to create/adjust patches. And the panel is well laid out on the Cobalt.
Hope that helps! I might do a comparison vid on our second channel at some point.
@@TeftyMeems Yeah that was helpful, thanks. And that comparison video would be really cool. Cheers!
It has a " rugged steel and aluminium chassis and the premium FATAR 37-note full-size key bed."
And that's why it's 20 something pounds! Feels super solid.
@@TeftyMeems That is super heavy for such a small KB...
In terms of sound, which do you prefer - Cobalt vs Minibrute?
Haven't used the Minibrute before, only the DrumBrute impact. I'd imagine the Minibrute gets dirtier easier 🤔
@@TeftyMeems Sorry, I mistyped, I meant "minifreak", haha
Makes way more sense! 🤣🤣 I'd say for lush analog'ish sounds Cobalt wins easily. Both have unique characters. I'm still getting use to MiniFreaks sonic pallette but it immediately stands out as a 'fun' or 'unique' feeling synth, just like the MicroFreak, but way better than the MicroFreak because of the extra features. I think Arturia has made something really special with the MiniFreak. And the plugin is the cherry on top!
