Sega's equivalent to Kirby's Avalanche gets its own movie. We all know these games by now, clump together alike beans in long combo chains to chuck mess onto your opponent, and win by blocking up opponent’s screen. Just the third column will suffice.

I think my favorite thing is the robots leading up to the end being some of the most intimidating looking robots Robotnik's ever created and then there's just Scratch.

For those wondering.
The original Puyo Puyo music is still in the game. They just moved it around to the Vs mode, exercise mode, when you get to Robotnick, the ending where the cast appears, and password screen.
The rest of the game uses its own OST.
Not entirely true. You're right that some of the original music is still in the game and some of it is still used, like the 2P Vs. mode which comes from the last round of Puyo Puyo. Still, there are still some tracks unused but still in the game's data. Like the Puyo Puyo theme for example.
And the music that plays when your board is almost full uses Satan's battle theme.

Imagine being the guy who designed all of those background robot characters for the AOSTH pilot only to find out your quick work that would've been relegated to one episode of a show gets put into the actual games based on said show. Cool shit.

They could have had potential to be boss characters in sonic games at the end of every zone instead of fighting robotnik over and over and over...

Dr. Robotnik's PINGAS was just not enough for the power of TAS.
Fun fact: Dr. Robotnik's line "snooping as usual, I see?" has become an Internet meme in 2007, due to the emphasis Robotnik puts on the syllables "ping as" sounding like something vulgar.

I got lucky when I beat this, Robotnik's AI derped and it ended up stacking beans straight upward at the start of God knows how many restarts and I won. I don't think I'll ever beat this game again, but it's nice to play it with friends.
Sounds like the AI just dropped dead by the shear weight of your iron will.

What??? I beaten this game countless of times. If you try enough times the cpu eventually just lets you win. But if you have skill, like me, you can still beat him. It’s a fun game that I like to play, as a mind exercise

Imagine how this must look from Robotnik's perspective. You have this machine all set up, it's ready to go, and inside of 30 seconds each, every hench-bot you send out suddenly gets rocked by this one person. Doesn't matter the strategy they use; They're deleted in 30 seconds or less.
Then they reach you, and in under eight minutes of operation, your entire plan has gone belly-up, your robots are in shambles, your machine is felled. Seriously, Eggman wishes he had a warning.
"IIIIIIIIIIII haaaaaaaaaate thaaaaaat TAAAAAAAASer! I hate him! I hate him! I! Hate! Him!"
All I'm hearing is that getting any kind of combo over 2 hits is just broken as hell
Especially since the offset rule in Puyo Puyo didn't exist yet.
If you get a 5-chain or higher, there's _literally nothing_ your opponent can do. Since you can't offset incoming garbage in this game, the amount a 5-chain will drop on the opponent will fill their board immediately.
Puyo 1 is janky as _hell._
@@blueblur98 Shame too, since until Puyo Pop on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, all localized Puyo games were based off of Puyo 1. Though at least Kirby's Avalanche did have a hidden offset feature due to the devs experimenting with it during the SFC conversion, IIRC.

So I just discovered three things:
- how the other robots beyond the third green one look.
- my first time seeing this game finished.
- I still hate it so much to this date.
I could never get past Frankly.
I pride myself in the fact that got to Davy Sprocket as a kid.
As a kid the game clicked with me after a while and I managed to beat the game, can't do it now as an adult

The way this player moves and makes combos (I know it’s a TSA) makes me think they could be a nightmare final boss in a Puyo Puyo game

Never thought I'd ever see the staff credits for this game let alone the 4th stage.
Scratch on the thumbnail is basically my reaction to the TAS.
Probably my favourite game I owned on SEGA, maybe tied with Sonic Spinball. I could never beat it as a kid but finally conquered it on the Steam release like fifteen years later, haha.
I still remember as a kid guessing passwords in this game and putting one in that was all B’s and getting warped to Grounders level. That was nuts to me as a young child, that I could guess a password somehow and see a part of a game that was impossible for me to get to at the time. Love this game.
I've never been good at Puyo Puyo, so seeing this TAS was somewhat cathartic lol

in Sonic Mania the boss at the end of Chemical Plant Act 2 is basically just mean bean machine and you can unlock a mode in the extras thats entirely just mean bean machine (i forgot when it was unlocked)

Robotnik's plan always involve some within-system way to defeat them. Pinball fortresses, puyo-puyo based defense systems, or an egg fortress that explodes when... what causes the death eggs to actually explode? Like, Sonic goes in and defeats some robots, and - that causes it to explode?
That fake suicide at the end had me dude, and the janking of the yellow bean in the second match was funny. I can tell you had a little fun with this one.
I remember this game, and the paper that we noted the level codes on.
And this game became part of the Chemical Plant Zone boss fight on Mania
The funny thing is out of all these characters we only saw them all used in the first episode of The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog and never seen again.

What a coincidence that the last robot before each music change in the game ended up having a role in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog t.v. show.
Well, really, each bot featured in this game is in the show, even if only for a few seconds. Most of them make appearances in the first episode.

I had a roller coaster-type experience with this game throughout my childhood. When I was super young, I was stupidly scared of this game for some odd reason. However, before I hit my teens, I brought this game over to a friend's house for summer break and we both got really heated and despised it because we couldn't get past Frankly. I remember it took 2 DAYS of us discussing strategies of how to get passed. When we did beat him, we were ecstatic and something clicked for me.
We powered through to where I think was Skweel (who my friend nicknamed dingleberry) before we looked up a guide. That's when I saw people doing chain patterns and where we discovered Puyo Puyo, which I quickly became invested in.
I sometimes revisit this game and usually beat it within 40 minutes to an hour.

What I think is kinda cool is that, theoretically, a human might actually be able to get this good. I might not be the best at Puyo Puyo (I can play it, but I’ve only gotten up to Skweel if I’m lucky to get past Davey Sprocket), but if it was my favourite game of all time, I could see myself as this good a player.
I say this out of no disrespect to the actual Puyo Puyo masters out there. Yes, I know this is a TAS.

How can you make a TAS when the next block given to you is random?
I suppose at the start of the game a seed is generated and predefines all blocks to come next, in order. Then it's just planning the fastest route in the TAS. Possibly may be some RNG manipulation involved
Randomness in computers is always derived from somewhere. In old games like this, it’s usually something like the current frame or maybe certain button inputs will be used to mix things up. When running in an emulator, especially in the case of a TAS, all of those elements can be controlled, so you can guarantee that you get the same RNG every time by always starting on the same frame, pressing the same buttons, etc.

I remember playing this years and years ago on the Xbox360 collection. I got to Robotnik the legit way but could not beat him.
Got so pissed one day I just stacked and randomly placed those dots. And for some bizarre reason I beat Robotnik and finished the game. 😂😂😂😂😶
