When my boys were little we didn’t have a lot of money and so when we would go on trips I would pack a cooler for our meals. The one thing that I always made was ham salad. I always felt a little bad for the boys that we couldn’t eat out but a couple times on the trip. But to this day my boy (they’re grown men now) say that’s one of their fondest memories of childhood. And when we go on trips now they still ask me to pack a cooler with some ham salad! 😂
I'm a 68 year old male who LOVES to cook. I also find the evolutionary changes in food culture and methods (across the span of my lifetime) to be very interesting. One thing that occurred to me when watching MeMe make this ham salad: is that I very much remember in my childhood (in the Good Ole Days I might say) many cooks VERY commonly added ground cloves to their ham salad. Not a lot, just enough to taste. It's a surprisingly good addition. Doesn't sound like it wood be, but it really is quite good. I wonder if anyone else remembers ground cloves in ham salad??
We rarely had left over ham, but my mom used to make "ham salad" with baloney and gherkin sweet pickles when I was a kid. She had one of those old manual meat grinders and I loved turning the handle to help grind up the baloney and gherkins 🙂
My mom did the same thing with the Bologna, Sweet pickles n Miracle Whip. She's been gone 13 years and our local meat market sells it made with ham n when you take a bite it sends yours memories just flooding back. YUM 😋
Same here! My dad used to make the bologna salad and I loved helping turn the crank of the old school meat grinder. And it tasted so delicious, you just can't beat a homemade ham or bologna salad made with love and beautiful memories!
Thank you for sharing this recipe. You're such a joy to watch. I use your cookbook recipes every week. I'm looking forward to your next cookbook. God bless you, Mrs. Diane.
I want an egg chopper like yours, Meme!! I ordered my cookbook yesterday and can’t wait to get it. I’m a great home cook and love to cook for my family. Looking forward to including some of your recipes in my rotation!
Me Me you are amazing with all of your no waste no nonsense recipes that are all DELICIOUS!! You have been a blessing to me and I always Shine for Jesus ❤️
I am living a blessed life and enjoying our beautiful fall here in Ohio. Thank you for asking about me and keep sharing your delicious recipes.@LivingHealthy-cb8is
when I was very young, my mother used to buy these tins of devilled ham for our lunches. I could not eat them, but she wouldn't listen so I ended up starving myself daily because I would throw it away. Your ham salad is definitely much, much better looking and I'm sure the taste and texture would be wonderful. I have a texture issue with eating, you see. I'll give this a try at New Year's Day when I do my next ham!
I have the same chopper. I use it all the time. My Mother’s Sunday School class had a fundraiser 50 years ago or more. I do make Ham salad from Ham…or from Balogna. From way back when Balogna was $.39 a lb. I enjoyed your video!
Miss MeMe My precious mother in law would make this for all of us. Mom W. Is now in Beautiful Heaven. She was a Great cook. I cried when I came across your Ham Spread...Thank you Miss MeMe for the forever memory...Blessings..🦋
I love watching your cooking shows 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I pray you will continue to be greatly blessed beca you first serve God, you love your family and definitely share some great stories ❤️ You are such a great incredible inspiration to countless women. Thank you! Keep smiling for Jesus! Oh! I love when you did banana bread. I mad it but used melted butter instead of vegetable oil. Everything is better with butter 😊. I’m in Texas! It’s triple digits here this week but Gods yet blessing us all. I’ve made a few of your goods and been very pleased. The recipes are very easy. I’m use to cooking from scratch and never measure but grew up eyeballing measurements like my mom and grandmother. Again! You are incredibly talented and I thank God for you. Keep sharing the good news of Jesus while you share good recipes. Oh! How do I get your cookbook for me and several others? 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😊
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!! Welcome to my kitchen!! Buttah makes everything better. www.memesrecipessc.com God bless you!!
One thing my family loves in meat salads, potato salad, or macaroni salad is sweet relish instead of dill. I do put in a small amount of yellow mustard in my macaroni and potato salads to give it some tang. I’ve never made ham salad though. Have to try that next time we have ham leftovers.
Great idea. I will try this. I also like to boil my ham bones to make a broth (air you can used boxed chicken broth). Then I make a ham and bean soup and I can it and have soup all winter long. I just put great northern beans, celery, onion, ham. When I’m ready to eat it, I add cooked barley and it is yummy with a pan of cornbread.
You are simply a ray of sunshine❤ Loved watching you and video was perfectly timed 😊 Thank you, I've never made ham salad but I'm going to try it. I'm going to try the ham perlow too. Thanks again for your recipe, God bless you
What a blessing your videos are! I love ham salad. My mother cooked for 6 kids and always had options for leftovers. For ham, she made what she called ham puff, like a soufflé. It was my favorite served with warm cherry sauce. Bless you MeMe!
I made your macaroni salad yesterday and it’s sooooo good!!! I made it just like you did, just less sugar. At first I thought it was to strong in flavor but I see why now it’s best to let it sit and mingle with all the flavors! I give it 5 stars out of 5!! Thank You! I can’t seem to stay out of it 🤣
My mother always chopped her eggs if she was putting it in salads! It seems most do not, but I sure don’t like getting a hunk of egg white! It just blends in so much better. Love your cooking and videos and personality!! I’m waiting for your cookbook to be available again…
When I was young, my grandma bought Oscar Mayer Sandwich Spread and we loved it. Then, they stopped making it and I am so happy that your recipe is just like it! Thank you.
My mother, another South Carolina lady from Greenwood, used to make ham salad. We all loved it growing up but I had forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. I’ll be using this recipe next time I bake a ham.
Thank you Ms MeMe. I have a ton of leftover ham in the freezer. There's only so much split pea soup and ham sandwiches one can eat. I can't say I've ever had ham salad but it looks like something I would love
This made me think of my mother. She would always make ham salad or roast salad when she had leftovers. Your salad looks delicious. I have been wanting your cookbook and it was sold out, but today I went to your website and it was available. Very excited. You have wonderful recipes. Thanks so much.❤✝️
I usually buy a spiral glazed ham and after the holiday I take it all off the bone. I use the bonebfor bean seasoning and the ham meat like you. I cut it to size for whatever I'm making. It is so good for seasoning beans. With the glazed ham, it is sweet and goes so good with the salt in the mayo or beans.
can't wait to try this... we called it meat and pickle sandwiches as a kid, we always used sweet relish. I look forward to trying it with the dill! Thank you!
I found your RUclips channel and enjoy it so much. I ordered the cookbook today. I use the internet for recipes but I like to see the cookbooks! Thanks for sharing. Watching from Gillette, Wyoming
Miss Diane, wow, I love Ham salad. I haven't had it in years...no one makes this anymore. I love ham and I'd love to try this ham salad. Please tell me how I can buy your cookbook. I hope it is still for sale! I just love watching your videos and I love your stories. They are perfect... Your vieos is like getting a big ole hug from your mother or grandmother! My best to you. Be well and God bless you. I told my sister today about your cube steak and gravy recipie and she is ecited to try it too!
This looks SO good, I can't wait to try it! It looks like the ham salad my dad used to make when I was a kid and he also made "bologna salad" with pickles made like this, it was so delicious! I just ordered your cookbook and am so excited to get it!
Yum! I grew up eating Ham Salad, Tuna Salad, Egg Salad & Chicken Salad sandwiches. My Mom really knew how to stretch a meal out. Nothing went to waste. Ever. One way she concocted to use up the leftover Easter ham was a Ham & Egg Casserole. She made a white sauce and put her chopped leftover ham into that and put that into a casserole dish. She then layered a few sliced boiled eggs to use up the Easter Eggs. Next came a little shredded cheddar cheese and then she topped it fresh white bread crumbs and drizzled some melted butter over it. It was soooo good!
Oh my gosh when MeMe said eggs I had forgotten the hard boiled eggs she chopped up with that handy dandy chopper, and I was picturing her cracking in raw eggs!!😂😂😂 I couldn’t remember her putting in eggs hahaha. Then I said ohhh! The hard boiled 🥚 💡 I was so confused for a minute hahaha!!
Meme... I love your recipes. I am known as a Meme too. I a hosting a Christmas Family party. I will sure make make your ham salad recipe. Thank you for sharing. Here in Maine we use Hellmann"s maynaise . We don't have Dukes. But, I am sure it is just as good.
my mom used to make something so similar! except they called it bologna salad and she would buy a big roll? of bologna - with a red skin around it that you had to peel off. then she'd grind it in an old fashioned meet grinder that you attached to a counter. she also ground the hard boiled eggs and used mayo to make a spread just like yours. we always ate it in sandwiches. myself? it wasn't one of my favorites, i think i found it too greasy maybe. But now i see that your recipe adds relish and i think that might make a lot of difference. adding another taste like that, whether sweet or dill sounds good to me. thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Well my goodness Mimi... I put the Baked Ham in the Crock-Pot because you inspire me so much to cook more I was talking to my daughter on the phone who lives a few hours away!! She said mom do you like ham salad for some of your leftovers? And I said I love him sell it but I've never made it but Mimi has so I'm going to go find it and get her recipe. While watching this video I heard you mention that you had lost your husband and I had mentioned that to you in another section. I always just thought your husband was probably in the living room reading the paper waiting for dinner to get done. Well unfortunately we belong to a club that no one else wants to and we sure didn't pick it did we? Thank you for being a friend!
My mom used ring bolonga . We still use her ancient grinder attached to a table to grind the meat. Then Mayo and sweet pickle relish . No eggs. and Not garlic bolonga ! 3 ingredients. Yum ! We called it ‘Mixed Stuff ‘ Mom asked us to come up with a proper name for it. Didn’t happen , it’s still mixed stuff. ! Love your show ! Common sense cooking ! Never could watch the cooking shows where you had to un out and buy some ingredients you couldn’t pronounce and would never use again. Two of my grands grew up in Anderson area. My granddaughter teaches school there. Or rather she is the head of a dept specializing in earlly child learning. Since she got her Masters. She needed a good mechanic recently. Isn’t one of your grans a mechanic ?
Several people have commented that make the bologna salad! Very interesting! Thank you for watching! Food is so expensive nowadays… I like to cook with simple ingredients. No mechanics in the family. But there are some good ones in town! Thank you for watching!
Another recipe you could make is ham balls. If you’ve never had them I think you’ll love them. They are covered in a sweet and sour mustard sauce. So delicious.
My mama used to have one of those choppers you used on your eggs. That thing was so sharp too. You had to be careful when using it. Occasionally she would use it for chopping walnuts or pecans. After she passed, I'm not sure what happened to it. I did get her grinder that you clamp on to a table with.

I absolutely love this!!! Meals don't have to be complicated to be good... and memorable!!
Eating out is so expensive
What great boys you raised!!

Another recipe you could make is ham balls. If you’ve never had them I think you’ll love them. They are covered in a sweet and sour mustard sauce. So delicious.
Great idea!!
Fried ham for breakfast
My mama used to have one of those choppers you used on your eggs. That thing was so sharp too. You had to be careful when using it. Occasionally she would use it for chopping walnuts or pecans. After she passed, I'm not sure what happened to it. I did get her grinder that you clamp on to a table with.
