    The classic stream was much easier to use as it does not require the OneDrive integration. It has been just great, especially for Teams recordings.

  • @wafkt

    Not a fan of the new Stream experience, I actually find it harder to find specific recordings, I alway see a bunch of recordings recommended from across my organization, but I only want to see recordings for a specific Team I’m a member of and sorted by date. Though, I guess I need to get onboard with the new Stream, and hope that it becomes easier to configure how videos are organized. It’s all just a bit too chaotic at the moment.

  • @galateah1

    I really wish you would have covered some of the 'gotchas' by switching over to the new stream. I support a team of around 70 instructors and there are many pain points with the new stream / teams experience. I'll try and cover what I mean as briefly as possible.
    When recordings are made from Teams meetings, (ie. not scheduled from an MS Teams channel): 1. The person who starts the recording becomes the recording owner, meaning the organizer of the meeting has no ownership over the recording. This is problematic when students start recordings. 2. If auto record is turned on in the meeting options ... then without strict lobby settings, the first person to join the meeting triggers the recording and becomes the recording owner. 3. Sharing recordings from the Teams' post by default has a permission set where the link only works for those who attended the meeting - most users aren't familiar with adjusting link permissions. There are loads more pain points - but most of it stems from the storage pattern and permissioning.
    Thanks for sharing all these helpful app updates, but for the new Stream, I don't feel like its all sunshine and roses.

    We are delving into stream and plan to move all of our content to stream/sharepoint for the company. My first thought was that we should be using the new stream but I find it lacking (despite it having been introduced almost two years ago). Documentation is sparse. For example, try to find how to enable transcription in new stream; nothing on the MS documentation but lots for the classic. After an exhaustive search, apparently there is no transcript feature except for Teams meetings videos.
    What happened to channels? We want to have separate channels for meetings, training, etc. And this all needs to be managed by a team, not one individual.
    Also from MS: "The "Stream" web part only works for Stream (Classic) content, it does not work with videos from OneDrive or SharePoint" - without the stream web part, we're missing the playback speed, search transcriptions, closed captioning buttons when we add the videos in a SharePoint page.
    Stream classic looks great and exactly what we need but now I am apprehensive to adopt it when MS will force a migration to an inferior product.
    So my question is, am I missing something or is the new version indeed missing a bunch of functionality Classic has?

    Frankly, it sounds like a huge mess compared to the classic Stream experience. Instead of having the training-videos that are recorded by multiple colleagues on one place, it is spread over various onedrive-accounts and various different document libraries on Sharepoint. It is basically impossible to manage where the videos are actually stored. How do you easily organize videos of similar kind? In classic stream I used channels for that. How to easily share training videos with new colleagues and give them access to the videos without a centralized privilege management and centralized video storage? Multiple colleagues would need to adjust the privileges then? Sounds unhandy. What if a colleague leaves the company - what happens to the recordings on the user's onedrive? I see only drawbacks and zero benefits compared to classic stream for the moment. Let's hope it will improve over time.

    Only issue with the new build is you can't edit it without downloading and reuploading it to the classic Stream or some third party software. According to a MS tech community post, MS are in the process of building a basic trim start and finish option - though they seem to caveat that with the option to wait until ClipChamp is integrated! Makes you think MS should have sorted the integration/Trim challenge before moving to the modern experience!

    Kevin, I have a feeling that Powerpoint is using Stream technology, am I right? For example, if you want to play a native video from the files section of Teams, it does NOT stream the video and is choppy. OTOH, all you have to do is embed that same video into a Powerpoint slide, then play it from the same files tab in Teams, and it streams perfectly.
    So, what do you think is happening there?

    • @KevinStratvert
      @KevinStratvert  2 года назад

      PowerPoint might be prefetching the video to ensure smooth playback.

    • @moodberry
      @moodberry 2 года назад

      @@KevinStratvert yes. Maybe. But I do know that this is the ONLY way to show smooth video within Teams. So although you said you can upload a video to Teams, people should understand that those videos won't play smoothly if "streaming" from Teams. Therefore, I challenge your statement that Stream is playing videos from Teams.

    • @marc38374
      @marc38374 2 года назад

      Doug can you file a support ticket? Videos played from the files tab in Teams are running through the new streaming we added to SharePoint and OneDrive from the Stream team. We are heavily focused on making all video playback in M365 great so your support ticket may help us find a new bug or issue we haven't found ourselves yet.

    • @moodberry
      @moodberry 2 года назад

      @@marc38374 Unable to file a support ticket. This issue is about the "hops" a presentation must make. If a video is being sent from the server as a native mp4 file, the file doesn't "know" how Teams handles video files. Putting it into PP informs Teams how it is supposed to work.

    • @marc38374
      @marc38374 2 года назад

      @@moodberry are you talking about playing the video in a Teams call or just clicking to play it in Teams from Files tab? The later should stream and not have choppy playback. The former is painful today and putting the video into a PowerPoint and using PowerPoint live to present and play the video is the workaround today.

      It’s still very much a work in progress since it’s a preview. It should eventually without a doubt be better than classic stream. I think they found that very few people used the Stream portal and by being in a disconnected system, they weren’t able to surface videos through Microsoft 365 (recommended, search, etc.). It's all well and good, but I don't see any option in the new interface or the docs about embedding links when you share. This feature is baked right into the old stream console when you share a video. I rely heavily on this for embedding videos on other platforms. I even tried spoofing the in bed URL using the snippet from the old console with the video link that you get when you share a video from the new console and it just straight up does not work, in fact the URL that is generated in the new stream share option it's just like sharing from anywhere else in OneDrive for SharePoint, it's like three times as long as the link that's embedded in the share / embed video option on the old stream platform.

    Can the videos be stored locally on your computer instead of in the cloud?

    New Stream seems a bit barren for content organization. All I get is a long list of videos that were shared or recently viewed by me.

    Does the new version allow for clipping the video? Classic allowed it.

    Why does Microsoft keep on repeatedly ruining their own product? I've been trying to simply trim one meeting video for an hour, there is no Trim function anywhere, and I don't think we have Classic option in our company. So annoying.

    Will the mobile app be converted to use the new experience vs. classic; or will a separate mobile app be made available?

      I believe the plan is to integrate the functionality into the Office Mobile app available on iOS and Android, similar to how the web experience is based off office.com.

      In addition we are also working on a dedicated mobile experience for Stream on SharePoint, no timeline for release to share yet.
