Pumped for my new website!!! RELEASING SOON!!!
Can I send U my photos sir pls suggest me some tips for photography ✌🏻
Looking forward to seeing it😎
I remember that old video. I've watched it twice.
does anyone really still look at websites ... except for webshops?
Will we find that dope sweatshirt on the new website?...LOL Yes Please : )
The real challenge for me, and I think most people, is branding yourself. As a designer I can brand other people no problem, but as soon as it’s for me.... I just hit a wall. Every time. Overcoming self doubt about this is also a key stumbling block. That said, this was a good reminder to really kick myself up the arse and sort this out. Thanks man.,
Yep. The struggle is real 🥺
I feel this! I feel like my style changes based on project and the cohesion is never consistent. I do sports photography and portraits and as you can imagine its just a wild range of styles.
Maybe have someone read a script of your style of photography and needs and act as if your branding someone else but really it’s yourself
Hey,
I need a Rebrand.. Pop me a Message.
@@BobbyMakepeace can you message people on RUclips anymore?
Such an honest video Pete! Most Creator/Photographer, are suffering from this stereo type. The fact is, you don't have to post all of your work on social media. 💪🙏
This was basically a 12 minute squarespace pitch and I watched it till the end 🤣 nice work Peter they are lucky to have you! Now what template should I choose...
yeah I saw it coming even before clicking, but Pete is just too cool to ignore so I watched the whole thing!
@@SantiYounger i'm 100% the same haha
And i have since bought a year on squarespace haha!
But he has a solid point. I definitely agree with him
Having your own website, is like having your own show-room, you decide what goes where, what the client sees first, what he sees second, what he doesn't see at all, how and when he can get in touch, you are in control so you can show your best the way you know best!
Thank you Peter. This is everything that I needed to hear. This should be echoed loudly throughout all social platforms to all creatives out there.
Oh, I'll be getting a print for my shop immediately!!!
Bro! I do videography for work but just got started doing woodworking and subscribed to you a litttle bit ago! Thanks for everything.
SAME!
*_nice... what type of artist are you?_*
What shop do you use to order your prints?
I love to see my favorite creative people comment on videos from some of my other favorite creative people!
“Don’t moind mae” 😂
This literally has a “translate to English” option under it 😅
@@tombuck 😂😂😂
😅😂
Pete's a pirate and sailed around Australian waters for a couple years
Bro, right under your comment my youtube app has the option “translate to English”. That cracked me up!
What’s really crazy is that I literally thought about shutting my social media today for a while and concentrating on a website, then bring my social media back as a way of solely advertising the website as my main outlet for blogging, writing, and photos etc
This is actually what has been going on in my mind.
I was just thinking the same TODAY and maybe start from 0! And keep social media for just that.
@@EdwinRucci I think it’s a smarter approach ☺️
We all should do it.
My social media are all over the place and it just doesn't work the way I want it. So yeah, I'll probably start it from scratch.
same thinking here
Social media is a great place for being a complimentary side to your main website portfolio! Dope video
You got me super excited to work on my reel!
I’ve been doing jobs here and there non stop. Everything started watching you and your tutorials 3 - 4 years ago.
So thank you !! So stoked to watch your reel
I remember you talking about Instagram being "the new portfolio" like 3-4 years ago in a video, and ever since then I started upping my game there. But I started realising otherwise like a year ago - more clients want a website where they can choose what category of work they want to see. It's overall more professional... and the quality doesn't get compressed. But your tip overall helped me be more picky with what I post on instagram, witch I also think is important!
Social Media is a ‘window’ into the room where your portfolio lives, you can look through the window or you can enter through the door (link to website)…excited to see your new site! 😎👍🏻
Online presence is EVERYTHING. This is definitely something we have to get better at.
That's what they want you to believe. There are alternative's.
100% agree Pete. Especially with the frequency of social media accounts being hacked or even simply because your work is being controlled by another company. My wife had a lot of her work on her facebook and it was recently hacked, so lesson definitely learned the hard way.
great video Peter! I was thinking about this recently...and also have been pushing my reel for too long. Thaaat's why I am so ready for this REEL competition!!! Let's go! Where do we post/send them??
F
up!
I have been teaching my students this concept for nearly 15 years. Lol Glad to see you finally see the light. Social media is good, but it should always point viewers to the "Real" portfolio.
This has become a beautifully produced shopping channel, all advice is given seamlessly matching the sponsor of the week.
I think is a great way to make money and create great content for your subscribers at the same time. And, is a more creative way to do sponsor segments
@@IzaelNeto It feals sellout-z, I went "oh its one of those" in the first minute and switched to reading comments.
@@advfix I don’t know why it’s a bad thing to make a video selling something if it’s great advertised, you don’t have to buy it, but he’s been honest 🤷🏾♂️. At the end I still enjoyed it
@@IzaelNeto Yea I know... I dont judge like/dislike is subjective anyway. I just wrote how I feal about his content.
@@advfix I get it, we can have different perspectives, but was great to hear yours and chat a lil bit. Sorry if I made it look like my opinion is the right one
LOVED this video. My favourite of this year from Pete. I’m in the process of redoing my website, and was just addressing this today. Very timely. Thanks Peter!
Excellent video and so true. As pro sports photog for over 10 years running, with 100+ teams I’ve never set up a website to showcase a portfolio or video work I’ve completed.. since starting a YT channel, this is SOOOO TRUE because a possible client may seek out our channel, and that would not entirely reflect the capacity of work that we can execute.
The challenge that I have at the moment is getting people to notice my work. As I have all these things set up, just getting the right people to see my work and keeping up with all updating everyone and getting clients feels like a full time in itself and it’s tough.
Same here. It’s like people don’t want to spend the money for pictures. I always get into discussions with people about doing it but once it comes to money they don’t want to really do it. But those few instances is all the encounters I have had. It’s hard to find people and in constantly trying to reach out to people to get paid gigs.
If portfolios were as simple as IG, everyone would have one.
Make it simple
i have IG. it's rubbish
They are, they just aren’t free like social media and people are cheap when they shouldn’t be.
Right. A square space website isn't yours to keep either. If you don't pay it will be taken away from you
@@lIREADYIl eh - well pay for it then. What a ridiculous thing to say.
I have been following and watching for a long time now, and that was one real video man. Follow your heart and keep yourself happy
Loved this video. Having a physical portfolio that people can touch and view, or a dedicated, curated space is huge.
Yes, exactly!!! 🙂 It certainly isn’t. It’s difficult to battle people’s perception that it is.
I totally agree. My wife is a cake Baker and gets 85% of business through FB and Insta but having her website sets her apart from other local bakers. She can direct everyone through the website and it gives them everything they need to know without having to send 30000 dm's to the clients.
Another great Video Pete, thanks 😊
You energy, your work and your attitude in these videos have truly inspired me to become a better photographer. Your one of the best photographers in my opinion and your drive to be an even better helps drive me to achieve my goals. Thank you for south great content.
Thank you so much!!! Just started creating a business with my photography, and it is always great to have someone that guides and inspires you. Great Work! 👍
I definitely think that there is a happy medium when it comes to social media & portfolio. But I believe a website ties it all in together.
Glad you're posting more again.
Almost thought I had to take over as the filmmaking RUclipsr #1 😂😜
This is a great video. Thank you for making it. 2022 Everything!! So important to keep up. Things move so fast.
Sooo agree! I am on the same path. Cheers to your epic energy. Looking forward to more.
Having a professional website that shows you in the best light is absolutely KEY. Definitely a game-changer for me 👊
Damnn this video felt like a wake up call ! I am only use my Instagram page to showcase my portfolio. Creating a website is on my to do list for this month !!! The real video idea for a RUclips video is awesome hope we can see that in the future (who knows I might even send my own video for the competition ). Great work as usual Pete !
great one man, thanks for kicking up to other space than just social media life!
Thanks Pete for bringing up some points I never thought about and now I have a different thought on anyone’s own website to show the portfolio
Pete's just rattling off all my marketing tips as a marketer 😂
congrats Pete! I think you burned over 1000 calories just moving your head in this video!
keep up the energy loving it hahaha
You’re incredible Peter! Love your work, your efforts and your personality. You inspire many people, keep doing you! 😁Thank you for all your advice and tips!
Learnt a lot from this channel in the past few days, including premier and aftereffects. Your tutorials helped me make my own montage videos, so thanks!
One thing about Peter is he never let us down , great work man 🔥, always learning something new ❤️
I mean... It can be. So many people these days base their experience on how many subscribers, followers or likes they have... And that (for sure) plays a big role for your business 🤷🏻♂️
I agree, and social media is so accessible.
@@KristoferBurns Exactly. Being a public domain, it allows the world to see what you have to offer.
"people dont have time for that" such a true statement, people will watch a tutorial but when it comes to certain things they are looking for then they want the info NOW and not in 20 minutes. The biggest thing is learning your audience and what they are looking for. This is my 4th and newest channel and I have learnt this the hard way. I do product reviews and people shopping want the info quickly. I can make a 10 minute video and it gets 50% viewed or I can make a 3 minute video that gets watched almost 100%. Was the same for my cooking channel, my gaming channel etc.
Awesome video mate, and that makes total sense, thank you for sharing this idea, all the best, and stay strong!
Love this: "You need to focus on what you want people to think about you"
Peter McKinnon: “Your social media is your portfolio…”

Peter Mckinnon: “Your social media is NOT your portfolio…”
Bingo, hypocrisy at it's finest
The way he keep motivating upcoming and ongoing photographers by making videos on such topics stands out his content and make him greatest photography teacher of all time 🙌🔥🤩 Thanks alot PM 🙏🤝
Man this is awesome! Thanks for talking about this! You are one of my inspirations for photo and video creations!
This video is just opinions from a professional but website or IG page is good. Having a website is good because then it's easily accessible from a distance. Professional Avenue is Phone Text to Phone or contact via Website. So at the end of the day don't listen to videos like thi. Do you! Period!
Awesome video, Peter! A truly, unparalleled eye-opening.Thank you so much for your time in sharing your expertise.
Must admit , this video really motivated me to continue creating my website. Because I always was more into a Website than in Social Media, but now I even want to focus more time on my Website than on Social Media!
Thank you!
Like is frustrating when you make a good photo or an Instagram reels that has been beautifully made and you get only 100 views. The work that is behind is not reflected.
I didn't realize I needed to hear this...
Peter, man! You always get me pumped to keep improving! Time to keep building the dream! Cheers!
Thank Pete you have Lit the Fire. Needed this, been saying to the other half I need to update my square space but never find the time to, but I really must.
Day always gets better when that Pete notification comes in!
It’s 2021 and apparently we need to be convinced to make a personal website again.
Mr. McKinnon, thank you for the 1-2 years of lessons and inspiration. For a while now I have been considering creating a website and exploring the possibility of taking my photography to the next level. I watched this particular video and decided to take the plunge. As of yesterday, my Squarespace site is online. I know I should have a clear business plan... I don't. So my site is a showcase and prints store front... primarily. I have a full time job that I love just as much as photography... Anyways, I've jumped into the deep end. Let's see what comes of it. The encouragement is greatly appreciated. Cheers to you and your continued success. Thank you for sharing meaningful content. Wish me luck.
Thanks for the inputs, Peter 😊 I learned a lot from this segment since I am also struggling with planning of my portfolio in a professional environment ( tech platform).
True but to be fair.. a good website is not always a 'template' website... it needs to tell your story and fit you as a person or brand. Otherwise you are the same as anyone else... Socials are good for community building.. which can lead to your website... but because it's this end station, it's important that you present yourself the best you can.. and templates are not always the way to go then... this might not fit everyone or every brand...
I agree, I personally don't like templates at all lol, but, I think you can build a website from ground on squarespace can't you? Although squarespace ads always highlights the templates
Templates aren’t what they used to be old timer. They’re soup to nuts fully customizable these days. Perhaps research a bit before letting your fingers yammer away.
@@creativemofoo I was thinking that too, they're not locked or unchangeable
Can we for a moment appreciate how he unconsciously uses his hands as well to pass out the powerful advice?
Yay!!!! I just became extra motivated today 💯, oh I’m excited super excited
THANK YOU for this. There are legitimate reasons why some people may refuse to access Instagram (aka Facebook). Don’t try to force your potential clients into your world; give them a publicly accessible website. No animosity intended, but there are businesses I don’t work with because the only way to learn about them is through “social media” sites I do not use. Also, if you work for local government/schools/services; make sure you aren’t making this same mistake. Because you will be blocking citizens/parents from participating if you communicate only via closed “social media” systems.
I’m not really convinced on the whole squarespace thing. You know who would have REALLY sold it? Squarespace Pete 🤷🏻♂️
Why don’t you do a regular video series where you review and critique viewer’s submitted portfolio.
Because you can tell someone to make a portfolio. But it doesnt do much good if you don’t showcase what to do and what not to do. As well as to showcase how portfolios can look completely different from one another yet still get the same message across.
"you want to be in the driver seat of your creativity/creative image" This one statement made me decide that I need to learn something from you. Thank you
I love this video because I have been saying this for 15 years. Social media is for being social. It's why I got my own website 20 years ago... and it points to all my photography, each for specific demographics or buyers.
Peter you got big from social media. And i include RUclips with social media.
Pretty much nobody ever visits a website. They need to specifically look for you to find your website
RUclips is a website for the owner to get people to use the platform. People can post their content on here while the owner (Google) can profit off of people's content. Without websites, the internet would be just text like back in the old days before internet became public.
Ugh... I used to love your videos. But it really just feels like everyday you're trying to sell something. "Social media is not your portfolio... which is why you need squarespace." I miss when it was just you and your love of the craft.
I had been thinking about the necessity of a website for quite a while now.... I loved this video, it definitely inspired me. Thank you!!
I came here for all of this!! Pete that’s the most sense I have heard in a while!!
I totally agree
Hey Peter what does it feel like to actually just be a glorified sales person….. Dope Right.
“Social media is not your portfolio, what you really need is a good website and that’s why we are proud of todays sponsor skillshare…”
Please let me know if that line is not in this video.
It's not.
Thanks for a great year of content through a difficult year! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺👍
Now that you have said this I think it is very true that we post so much on social media specially being a photographer/Videographer that we don't know what people first see when they start scrolling down.

Glad you're waking up Peta. Some of us creative's have to learn things the long and hard way! The more of a sales person we are, the more successful. You've been giving A LOT of GREATNESS, to make Social Networks a LOT of MONEY!!
This is such fantastic advice, thanks pete
Hyped for the website!!!
Thank you for speaking on this :D
I'm kinda in the middle of stuck situation, and luckily this video showed up and now got something to do or at least something to figure out 🙌
I am a 100% believer in the points you make here.
When I ask a restaurant if I can find their menu online, and they say, "We're on FaceBook," they lose me as a customer.
I don't use FaceBook. Or any social media.
"Why are you making this more painful for me?"
totally agree, social media now just shuffles everything around for their own benefit - creators should curate their contents themselves. Good call Pete.
I appreciate you sharing your journey.
l'm glad you made this! l get so much inspiration from you & value your work so knowing you made this vid makes me have to step it up... l think this is good though bc now my IG can be used as a social space rather than a gallery.
Another great video! Can you make a video talking about how you built your new website and where / how to print photographs?
Coming back to this. I just got my dream job, and the reason why is because they saw my insta feed and loved it. In this sense, my feed was my portfolio. Now, I had a website to supplement it (or the other way around), but it was extremely crucial for it to be polished. Dont neglect the feed! Could be huge. (Full time gig, not a freelance gig)
thank you for sharing. Goode to know
And you are lying yourself away!
Yo why was this perfect timing, I needed this video for sure!
Thanks Peter. Haven’t really thought about it like that! Cheers✌🏻
