Man! That's some killer isolation on the snare mic! How you do that?! It didn't sound gated.

The MicParts SDC84 has some of the best rejection of any mic I've used. The capsule is hypercardioid so that helps too.

Are you compressing the room mic’s for heavy drum tracks? I do light compression around 2.5 to 1 ratio but now I am thinking it’s better to let it all through and smash the close mic’s harder if necessary. I will be side chaining soon too so love the tips here, I have been learning lots from your videos.

What I do know is usually 2 sets of main room mics. A stereo pair of ribbons (usually the AT4080) 8"-10" feet in front of the kit with some compression from an Overstayer VCA. I have no idea what my settings are each time as I compress until I like it. The second main set gets no direct compression. Sometimes they are set to omni and somtimes they are set to cardioid and placed behind a gobo.
      Then.....
I split the uncompressed room mics to another pair of channels and blow them up. Really aggressive. On their own they don't sound so great but when mixed with the uncompressed rooms they add ambience and character and the uncompressed still have some punch. Since it's the same mic there are no phase issues either.
I really try to create the sound I'm looking for as much as possible while tracking yet still leave room to maneuver when mixing.
      Thanks for watching!!

I think I've worked with too many bands in that genre, it gave me a lot of headaches. I felt I bit burned out because of it lately.
I don't mind the music but the editing mixing is often a nightmare, even with very good musicians. If you want to stay all natural, it's all automation cause dynamics is the enemy. I always use triggers in addition to the mics, just in case and if I don't use samples in the end, they are still very good visual aid for editing as well as very good side chain/key in signal for compressors and gates.

The single they just released has no triggers on it and we did no editing beyond comping takes together. It was all pretty headache free actually.
