For those who weren't around when Schramm was there you had hear about Schramm in every game you watched even when it was two different teams. And Schramm was in the newspapers everyday. Sometimes all through a game they would talk Schramm. Then when Schramm died he didn't fade quick.

Jerry Jones has been a BLIGHT on the Cowboys since the first hour. The fact that Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman rose above the NARCISSIST for a few years is NO CREDIT to Jones.
A true class act. 2 SB championships, 5 SB appearances, numerous playoff and championship games, The Washington Redskins, the bitter rivals, gave a formal farewell party for Landry at that time. Landry said he never imagined that he would be treated better by the Skins than the Cowboys. Very sad.
I remember when Landry was in command, that the Cowboys acted as a team. No player was no more important then any other player. That on break from huddle, the team went to the line together as a team then simultaneously getting into position, just like a machine. I did not like the Cowboys back in the day, because they beat my Broncos in the Super Bowl, but by God I respected the Cowboys and Tom Landry. They don’t make them like that anymore.
tom revolutionized the game!! utilizing the shotgun more, his flex defense, whether on offense or defense the front line would pop up n down in unison...n tex made some unbelievable draft picks!
It was a sad ending and it did not have to go down that way. The demise of the Cowboys near the end of Tom Landry’s tenure was not his fault. Dallas kept drafting for positions instead of talent, and there was very little to no talent at the positions they were seeking to fill those voids with. Some great talented players slipped past them, which proves the point that in draft day, teams should go after the most talented player available instead of a position the team has a weakness in.
@@rog9601 which was a hallmark of the Tom Landry Cowboys. They often drafted the best athlete and taught them to be good football players. So both of those comments seem really off the mark. And with their unparalleled success, they frequently have very poor draft choices to work with and still maintain a winning franchise.
There was no reason to let Bill go. All teams go through a cycle of ups and downs, someone needs to tell Mr. Kraft that you can't have it all every year.
@rog9601 honestly man I get it because of the horrible devlopment of mac jones and the throwing used parts to the offense and full top dollar to the defense, the last couple years it was time to move on, but it still hurts cause he helped us win 6 superbowls
HIs football philosophy is still the gold standard in the NFL dude...study up. He won the NFC East in 1985 had 25 straight winning seasons only 3 aging teams at the very end.
Tom Landry was a class act all by himself! He always look so debonair on the sidelines, with his suit, tie, and fedora! Coach Landry made the Dallas Cowboys America's team!
I was in high school when this happened. Tom Landry was the single biggest reason why the Cowboys were America's Team up to that point. But those mid to late 80's teams were terrible and the franchise needed a change. There is no good way to fire a legend that doesn't want to step down.
Maulekuul: Even a lifelong Packer fan such as myself mourned the disrespect to a true gentleman coach he was. Back then before he was fired by JJ, there was an article in newspaper, or a Sports Illustrated, at that time talking about the top winningest NFL coaches: Laundry, Shula, and Knoll; who were still coaching, but having losing seasons. Writer was trying to demystifying how these successful coaches were on the other end. This was before your time, You didn't know Coach Laundry
@@mastersonic707 Not technically correct, Switzer and Parcells both resigned. However it is true that Jones has made every coaching change in Cowboys history.
I was born in 66 and Dallas was my team. I live in New York and It was tough to get every game. I would lay on the floor 2-3 ft from the TV and when they scored I'd jump up and run around the room. My mom and I still laugh about that. I would cut. Every picture out of the paper. I still have that scrapbook. When Mr. Landry was fired I have never watched a Dallas game since.
I'll admit when Jones fired my childhood hero Tom Landry I disowned the team for a couple of years! Tom Landry was a man of class, strength, composure, and intellect. He played a huge part in building the mystique of that incredible franchise. The COWBOYS of today are still riding his coattails as a result!
Everyone was so moved by the passing of Coach Landry and sooooo many showed up for his funeral. I'm not sure the same will be said for JJ when he passes.
While Tom Landry had the reputation to be calm and collective, I recall many many years ago on Monday Night Football where there was a camera on Landry that caught him in a fit of excitement . . . as about as excited as anyone ever got to see him. I'll never forget that video replay MNF did of Landry's reaction to a momentous play that happened a moment before, where he was wide-eyed and expressed his excitement with a subtle hop into the air. xD
@@Solitude47152 True that the Cowboys needed to switch gears and there was no easy way to fire Landry after all he did for that organization. Tom Landry exhibited the class and elegance of a Southern gentleman and the winner that he remained the rest of his life in the face of this gross disrespect by the clod Jerry Jones. The winning percentage of Landry when Clint Murchison owned the team compared with Jerry Jones' Cowboys is not close. Landry's winning percentage of 64% (which includes the first few losing years after expansion) is much higher than Jones' teams.
It had indeed - We don't know if he was given the option to resign or retire and if he refused it, like someone else said, firing is the only alternative

I have never been a fan of the Cowboys because I'm an Eagles fan! Lol! I do have the utmost respect for Coach Landry who was one of the greatest coaches of all time and WW2 veteran.
Thank you from a Cowboys fan.
Ewwww! Lol!!!
You're correct. Bomber pilot I believe
As a Steeler fan since 72 Coach Landry and those incredible teams he assembled were always a top tier adversary. A class act on the field and off the field.
This why, Jerry is going through the stuff they are going through. He deserves it. He did Jimmy the same way
Tom Landry was CLASS whether in victory or defeat....Never made excuses and the press showed him respect.
I miss the NFL of years past.
The CNN/ESPN reporter did an excellent job on reporting the facts of the matter, and respecting the totality of what Tom Landry meant to the team, Dallas and Texas. Nothing lasts forever.
Tears are still streaming down my face… 😢
For those who weren't around when Schramm was there you had hear about Schramm in every game you watched even when it was two different teams. And Schramm was in the newspapers everyday. Sometimes all through a game they would talk Schramm. Then when Schramm died he didn't fade quick.
Lifelong Eagles fan and remember this dark moment in Cowboys history. Jerry Jones showed his true colors then. Tom Landry and Tex Schramm were winners in football and in life.
Oh believe me people here are still pissed off about this.
@@johnmagill3072 lmao.. got that right.
@@texas1526 then won 3 super bowls and ppl forgave winning fixes everything
@@Ciauskhaleesi real football fans know that Jones had nothing to do with the cowboys success in the 90s.
He didnt even have the money to build it, Jimmy did it all. And even he was pushed out. Jones is a true loser.
Jones is still showing his true colors
Mr. Landry will forever be held in higher regard than Jerry Jones in the hearts of us older Cowboys fans.
this is true
Jerry Jones is not a head coach.
Has nothing to do with being a head coach or not it was about being held in high regard.
@@anthonycampos8057 thank you Captain Obvious. You're now held in low regard.
I can't even get myself to watch this. It was a sad day.
Vikings fan here. I always respected coaches like Tom Landry. Guy was a winner. When the cowboys and vikings went at in the 70's it was always special. Tom Landry/ budGrant, epic coaches.
I loved that too. I wish Bud and the Vikes would have gotten a championship, they had some dominate teams, and a huge advantage in the snow in Bloomington.
I was a lifelong Dallas cowboy fan until that day when Tom Landry was fired I was fired there's still some emotion for the cowboys but I don't have the same passion I had back then he was a good god-fearing man with a good heart and love for people and I'm a true believer yeah they won the super bowls but lately it's been a curse of Landry and it's going to stay with them like they say in the movie sandlot forever! Forever!
Loved coach Landry he is one of best coaches ever
One of the most despicable acts that I can recall. I was a rabid Cowboys fan until that moment. Landry, all class, as always.
If you do not root for the cowgirls, good for you!(check my comment)
Despicable? You need a life
Jerry Jones has been a BLIGHT on the Cowboys since the first hour. The fact that Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman rose above the NARCISSIST for a few years is NO CREDIT to Jones.
If this hadn't happen, Jimmy Johnson doesn't come in.
@@dannysunay4386cowgirls is a sexist comment.
One of the finest men in the nfl.
Tom Landry exude confidence in a quiet solid manner.....best dressed Coach ever......Coaches these days look like they work at a car wash!!
As a Cowboy hater, Coach Landry was a class act.
A true class act. 2 SB championships, 5 SB appearances, numerous playoff and championship games, The Washington Redskins, the bitter rivals, gave a formal farewell party for Landry at that time. Landry said he never imagined that he would be treated better by the Skins than the Cowboys. Very sad.
Very sad! 😔
A man like this didn't deserve to walk away in this way. He deserved much much better than this after all that he did for such a storied franchise.
Coach Landry was a great coach!
I love tom awesome man
I remember when Landry was in command, that the Cowboys acted as a team.
A great Christian ...Tom, thank you!
He was a real Christian.
Doesn’t get any better than Tom Landry and Joe Gibbs Two of the top Best
That's a Nice 88 Cadillac he drove... I have the same one... great coach ( Legend ) RIP
I was just reading about that exact point two nights ago, go after the most talented player available, not necessarily based on position.
@@rog9601 which was a hallmark of the Tom Landry Cowboys. They often drafted the best athlete and taught them to be good football players. So both of those comments seem really off the mark. And with their unparalleled success, they frequently have very poor draft choices to work with and still maintain a winning franchise.
Landry was ALWAYS A CLASS ACT !
Jerry Jones will never wipe that stain off of himself
This was the darkest day of my football life! He was my father figure.
The day I quit being a cowboys fan. Not mad at letting him go. But the way they went about it. Classless.
I was NEVER a Cowboys fan, but I had respect for Coach Landry. This firing without FANFARE was a DISGRACE.
Such a great man and coach
That was a vicious hit on #16. I hope he was ok.
I remembered watching this. It was surreal.
To this day, many people have still not forgiven Jerry Jones the way he handled this.
I know at least one who never went to games again.
@rog9601 I assume that's you
You’re right about that!!!!
Im a patriots fan and my friend at work is a cowboys fan and he told me it sucked when they did that, now i know how they feel
This was sad. Looks like the game passed him by. But he’s one of the greatest Cowboys coaches ever.
HIs football philosophy is still the gold standard in the NFL dude...study up. He won the NFC East in 1985 had 25 straight winning seasons only 3 aging teams at the very end.
I spoke to an older gentleman recently who says he has not been a Cowboys fan since the day they fired Coach Landry.
Tom Landry was a class act all by himself! He always look so debonair on the sidelines, with his suit, tie, and fedora! Coach Landry made the Dallas Cowboys America's team!
I stopped being a Dallas Cowboy fan in 1989...Tom Landry was a class act...He was from my hometown Mission, TX...
Too bad you missed out on those three superbowls
I was in high school when this happened. Tom Landry was the single biggest reason why the Cowboys were America's Team up to that point. But those mid to late 80's teams were terrible and the franchise needed a change. There is no good way to fire a legend that doesn't want to step down.
Maulekuul:
Even a lifelong Packer fan such as myself mourned the disrespect to a true gentleman coach he was.
49ers fan here, and I remember this day clearly and thought Wow that new owner better have a plan.
Landry time was up as a coach but the whole situation could have gone down better.
Jerry Jones has fired every Cowboys coach.
Not true at all
@@mastersonic707 Not technically correct, Switzer and Parcells both resigned. However it is true that Jones has made every coaching change in Cowboys history.
and rightfully so
@@lakebay972 how did firing Jimmy work out for you?
@@rolltide9547 Jerry didn't fire that man
Dearly despise Dallas and Jones, but I LOVED Coach Landry. An awesome football mind and even better person. Rip coach. Love ya man
Under Jerry the Cowboys have three Superbowls
I stopped being a Cowboy fan because of this. Never regretted it.
You cheer for the Texans?
No. Stopped following NFL altogether.
Too bad. You missed out on those three Superbowls.
I remember this day oh so very well.... It was a dark day for Cowboy fans.....
Landry is a french canadian origine. Im proud of him. Merci entraîneur Landry!
Everyone was so moved by the passing of Coach Landry and sooooo many showed up for his funeral. I'm not sure the same will be said for JJ when he passes.
JJ is an owner. Hes not a coach Einstein.
While Tom Landry had the reputation to be calm and collective, I recall many many years ago on Monday Night Football where there was a camera on Landry that caught him in a fit of excitement . . . as about as excited as anyone ever got to see him.
I'll never forget that video replay MNF did of Landry's reaction to a momentous play that happened a moment before, where he was wide-eyed and expressed his excitement with a subtle hop into the air. xD
30 Years later in 2019 Jerry Jones regrets how he handled the Tom Landry situation and wishes that he could have handled it differently.
That's true, but Jerry didn't regret the way he dumped Tex Schramm and Gil Brandt.
Not so sure he has the depth of character to care..
@@vincentprincipato9234 I'm sure that he doesn't have an ounce of character. He is a character. That's his legacy.
Look the old man had to go. There’s no easy way to do this
@@Solitude47152 True that the Cowboys needed to switch gears and there was no easy way to fire Landry after all he did for that organization. Jerry could have had a meeting with Landry and said to him I think we need to go in a different direction so I need to bring my guys in order to do this which means I am going to have to let you go.
I can’t LIE this was when I STOP cheering for the Cowboys. Up to this MOMENT the Cowboys was my team in the NFC & the Pittsburgh Steelers Steel Curtain was my favorite it in AFC until they broke up from the 70’s!! I had the Steelers Room Curtains and Dallas Cowboys Vest Jacket it looked like a Bubble Jacket Vest for the Spring & Fall. ON EVERYTHING I LOVE ❤️
The 5:00 minute mark might have been the most vicious hit on a Cowboys QB ever.
Jerry Jones at least should had let Tom Landry leave with some dignity. That said, I think the game had passed Landry by.
"passed" and I think you're right
It had indeed - We don't know if he was given the option to resign or retire and if he refused it, like someone else said, firing is the only alternative
@@1983jblack I agree 100 percent.
@@Bob31415 I corrected it.
I am not defending Jerry Jones but we will never know if he fired Tom Landry outright or he gave him some options.

The interesting thing is that the same thing will happen to the Jones kids in another 10 years when Jerry is gone.
Except NO one will look at them like Tom Landry.
You don't think the team will stay in the Jones family?
No, the Jones kids definitely want to run the team & will inherit the ownership. No telling how long it will stay in the family, could be multi generational.
