A few years ago Dick Nolan's son, Mike, who coached the 49ers, had to get approval from the NFL to wear his suit in honor of his Dad, who also coached the 49ers. Can you believe that? The NFL used to be a lot more fun and easy going. They are so into the marketing of their NFL gear everything just gets lost.

He wasn't going to step down willingly. He thought his success had bought him some down years but the Cowboys had been in a decline for years. Unfortunately, as a Packers fan, I find you argument hard to align with because they were so dominant in the early 90s. They were not winning any more Super Bowls with Landry. Favre and the Packers were denied three years in a row to Jimmy Johnson's team twice in Divisional and once in the NFC Championship. Who knows what would have happened in 96 and 97 had Jerry and Jimmy not feuded. Bottom line is the move made you a powerhouse, mostly due to Jimmy's brilliance and a sweet trade. Jerry's issue has always been personal relationships. He picks fights and favorites and needs to be so involved that he let a HOF coach walk. He probably should have been more graceful with Landry but Tom wasn't leaving willingly. I at least respected that he told Landry even when the old owner offered to fire him before selling off the team to Jerry. Jones made it a point to say it himself which I at least respect.

It was a sad ending and it did not have to go down that way. The demise of the Cowboys near the end of Tom Landry’s tenure was not his fault. Dallas kept drafting for positions instead of talent, and there was very little to no talent at the positions they were seeking to fill those voids with. Some great talented players slipped past them, which proves the point that in draft day, teams should go after the most talented player available instead of a position the team has a weakness in.

I played holes 15-18 with Coach Landry in about 1974, at Woodlawn Hills public golf course in Nacogdoches, Texas.
    I was 13 or 14.
Never knew till then that he was as tall as he was, and he did not ride in a cart, he walked ( that's in the summer heat of 100°f +), he NEVER said an unkind word and NO profanity.
He did not smoke and he counted every single stroke because I was watching and he knew I was watching.
What I am saying is I have known very few men like him in my life.
I hope that I can be, at least on a much smaller scale, a man like him.
Thanks for the putting tip, Coach, I still use it!

I remember when Landry was in command, that the Cowboys acted as a team. No player was no more important then any other player.
That on break from huddle, the team went to the line together as a team then simultaneously getting into position, just like a machine. I did not like the Cowboys back in the day, because they beat my Broncos in the Super Bowl, but by God I respected the Cowboys and Tom Landry. They don’t make them like that anymore.
