I remember living in Dallas at the time Jimmy was the Cowboys coach. He made the games so exciting. The players were very talented, but I believe he brought out the best in them. The Super Bowls they won proved that. Jerry Jones was very careless causing Jimmy to leave. The Cowboys have never been that exciting again, sad to say.

Jerry and Jimmy knew each other since they played college ball at Arkansas in the 1960s. Their relationship was based on more deeply than owner/employee. Jerry micro manages, and they are both strong egos. Besides, Jerry totally disrespected one of the best football coaches in Tom Landry when he fired he and GM Tex Schramm as he bought the Cowboys.

What Jimmy Johnson doesn't say here, although has said in other past interviews, is Jerry Jones' stranglehold over the franchise solidified his decision to leave the Cowboys.
Jones would always place himself over everyone else, to be the most visible person responsible for the success of Dallas...not the coaches and players.
After Johnson left, the dysfunction spread over the entire organization, despite winning a Super Bowl under Switzer with the Johnson built team.
Since then, the Cowboys have been an underachieving ball club at best.

He talks about how he's a 'live in the moment' kind of person and that probably is what made him such a successful coach as he probably looked to maximize every day on the job. But with the passing of his mom, he also realized that the people you care about aren't around forever so he gave it all up to spend more time with them. I'm glad he's happy and he seems to be at peace with how his career in the NFL turned out

What an absolute baller. Left out on the top. Didn’t let Jerry puppeteer him.
What if he stayed, and had Jerry’s finger on him and did what Jerry wanted him to do? 3 more years, but 3 years of potentially no Super Bowl appearances, losing in playoffs… coaching schemes he wouldn’t like, personnel changes he may not like, players being traded, dropped, and drafted in ways that may not have fit in his plan…
*Think if you were Jimmy. You’re chilling with a drink and a cigar, overlooking an ocean or the mountains somewhere. You’re reflecting about all of the memories and achievements you’ve made in life. If you go out on top, you’ve got 3 years of incredible memories of the dream team and the superbowl wins. All the camaraderie and that unique formula to success.*
Or, you stay with Jerry, and you have those great 3 years, but also had 3 years of Jerry’s bullshit being the last 3 years of your coaching career. Why overwrite or add some of those negative experiences when you can end out on top?

It really came down to that both wanted all the credit and they didn't want to share it together. If they had been say what we saw with the Patriots with Bellichick, Bob Kraft, and QB Tom Brady, the Cowboys wouldn't have gone down 21-0 against the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship game after 3 possessions. I know Jimmy would have gotten the team ready. Yes, Jerry was trying to take over more of the operation and I can't blame Jimmy for that, but if the credit was shared and Jerry's ego wasn't in the way, the Cowboys could have easily won 4 or even 5 straight Super Bowls. You see the current dynasty in the Chiefs. Clark Hunt the owner staying in the background and letting Andy Reid do his thing. Having great players in QB Patrick Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce. It's about the team and not the individual.

Jerry is the single remaining denominator on the franchise, and they've won nothing meaningful since. The franchise became the wealthiest team because of the fanbase buying into a pipe dream...hope, not because of wins. Once the fanbase gets tired enough of pumping money in the Jones' direction things will change. This Cowboys fanbase has all the power that matters to Jerry...FINANCIAL. Have that stadium and attendance looking like the Panthers stadium did a few weeks back and things will change

Literally every franchise buys into hope, give me a break. The fan base won’t get tired of Jerry in a significant way - with their wallets. As long as the team is visible and profitable, and Jerry is alive, nothing will change. But I doubt the Jones kids will be any different. Were the fans spoiled in the 90’s? Yes, who wouldn’t be, they had an all-time great team. Unfortunately, every subsequent version of the team will be compared to that, and they just can’t compete.

Still mad that Jones fired Landry right before the end of the Cold War and is still with the Cowboys longer than Landry was who started the Cowboys. Who would Landry have selected to replace himself? Mike Ditka maybe? Because of Jerry Jones, we will never know. They should have given the Vikings some of those SB rings for that ridiculous ransom they got for the Herschel Walker trade.
Dumbest trade in NFL history on the Vikings part, and Jimmy knew just what to do with all of those picks.
Jimmy Johnson was the greatest talent evaluator of his day, bar none.

He was a great coach and as a cowboys fan for life but he sounds like the most selfish person I’ve seen in a while. Jerry’s an idiot and delusional but Jimmy has obvious faults.

Everyone knows that Jerry the alcoholic wino owner wants all the success to himself, mark my words cause I only say it once that they will never win another Superbowl on my watch unless they get some one to help them how to manhandle your opponent if not oh well like I've said this last few years back if any team manhandle them in a this year 24 they will not go into a championship game it's a true fact

The same way with Al Davis when he got rid of Gruden in the 2002 offseason. He could’ve captured that 4th trophy for his Raiders if he didn’t ship Gruden to Tampa. Big egos will cost you success so therefore you need to let it go.

"I wasn't having fun." Tell that to the tens of millions of people who WORK for a living to provide the basic needs for their families. No wonder it took 30 years for them to put you in the Ring of Honor.

That's not why. If you read the history, Jerry is the committee of one who decides who goes on the ring. Jerry's ego is the reason it took so long. The way he treated Landry was unconscionable. They could have come to an agreement. Landry could have retired or just decided to leave. Jerry wiped away Landry and cared nothing for him. Alabama won't do that with Saban. Successful former coaches are to be celebrated.

All these comments praising Jimmy and downing Jerry. Well, at the end of the vid here, Jimmy basically tells you what an a-hole he was back then , but because he was the coach and not the meddling owner, he get's all the love. So Jerry FIRED Landry. BIG WHOOP! It was time and I loved the Cowboys of Landry. Why aren't we pissed at Bum Bright? He HATED Tom. I love Jerry Jones' passion. He loves the hell out of the Cowboys. He hasn't won a Super Bowl in 29 years. Ok.
