As much of clown show as it is now, when Jerry does pass away, the real circus begins when Stephen, Jerry Jr, and daughter Carolyn begin fighting for control.
And Jimmy Johnson had the class to never express any animosity over the situation. He wanted to go boating off the coast of Florida. Right. Instead of going for 3 in a row. Right. That is sportsmanship.
I think that was the excuse because Mr. Ego Jerry Jones basically forced him out and wanted to be GM...while Jimmy Johnson wouldn't accept that. Jimmy wanted control over getting players..and the fishing was just the excuse.
It’s like this in every walk of life when you get a gold standard team. It’s tough to keep together because of pay scale personal eval and ego. Football bands sales fortune 10 firm
Used to be a big Cowboys fan. Now there’s not another team in the whole league that I enjoy watching lose more than the Cowboys. The single best thing to watch on TV is fourth quarter shots of Jerry Jones when they’re down by 4 touchdowns. The Cowboys will never have success in the playoffs until Jerry passes away. And that’s a good thing!
I wasn’t there so I don’t know, but looking back objectively at the cowboys since then, how can anyone, including Troy, think that Jimmy was the or a problem?! My goodness.
Lifelong cowboys fan...thru thick and think, but, definitely not myopic, I can't stand Jerry Jones...he is THE problem. Crap rolls downhill and we cowboy fans have rolling in it since Jerry fired Jimmy. Troy is spot on and wholly underrated.
well, actually, Jerry was right, they fired Jimmy and two years later they won again, a third championship in just four years, the Cowboys were that good. but after that, it went all downhill from there. They could never repeat that quality of a team. They were all amazing players, in both, offence and defense.
The cowboys spotted the 49rs 21 quick points in the championship game and but for the pass interference that was NOT called on Dion Sanders when he held Irvins arm down they would have went to three in a row.
Ya let it slip by Jerruh... You an Jimmuh could of done some great things together... a couple more Bowls won... You guys had the best OL in the history of the NFL... Emmitt gets 5 yds a carry before he even gets touched that's how big Larry Allen & Co. would open holes for Emmitt...Oh well... 😏
WEIRD ! In the early 90's the Cowboys owned the NFL and were on their way to 6/7 Super Bowls ! The BRUISING steam rolling OL sticks out to me ! This feud is like Al Davis / Marcus Allen monkey wrench to end 80's Raiders Dynasty ! Ego Jealousy !
TRUE COWBOY!!!! Aikman was GREAT I don't believe all the talk about him having a O-line made him good. The ball still has to placed where it has to be place.
And the main reason was Jerry Jones' stupidity (and the Vikings). Add to that; the Cowboys were so good for so long was the Herschel Walker trade which many say Jimmy Johnson made happen. They built a team that everyone wanted to play for with the players they received via draft picks by giving up Walker. The rest was gravy. Herschel was a really good player. But no front office can give up an entire Pro Bowl team for him and still win. And the Vikings didn't!
What could have been is as lame a question as there is, because what could have been can be applied to what if the team hadn’t been sold to Jerry Jones in the first place?
They way Jerry Jones unceremoniously fired Tom Landry pissed off alot of people. Not saying he shouldn't have just that he could have done it with a lot more class. Firing Jimmy is unforgiveable and I haven't watched a Cowboys game since.
As a non expert football owner. You defer to the expert football coach and let him do his thing. The whole fault for that situation going left, was Jerry Jones. Troy Aikman said the absolute truth. But it is well known. And has been for 3 decades.
And now the Cowboys live with The Curse of the Jimmy. Much like Boston lived all those years under The Curse of the Bambino. If there is a parallel then Dallas can expect it's next Super Bowl win around 2082. My grandchildren will probably live to see it. There is one thing. The Cowboys are the only team in the history of the NFL to win a Super Bowl (1996) without the benefit of a head coach. Jones was the author of amazing success for a few years and then the author of dismal mediocrity for a generation. Whatever he is or isn't he is an American original. Despite the fact that his football team hasn't won a second round playoff game in almost 28 years his Dallas Cowboys is the most valuable sports franchise on Earth and by a lot.
Considering they came back and won a third SB after missing the year before, one would have to seriously think that not only could they have won 3 in a row, it could have been 4. Nobody will ever know of course because injuries sure do happen in football, as just one reason why they might not have, but it could be argued that they sure could have.
Jerry couldn't handle the fact that Jimmy got all the credit for their success, in his mind he was living in Jimmy's shadow and that will eat up a narcissist like Jerry. And now look at Jerry, 30 years later and he's still getting in the way of the team's success.
Any other GM performing on the level of Jerry Jones as would have been fired decades ago. Jones is the problem. He's the naked emperor no one in the Dallas organization has the balls to point out.
It is simple...nothing more needs to be highlighted. Jerry Jones REFUSED to honor Jimmy in their "circle". The NFL recognized how great of a Coach he was enough to put him in the HoF. Only then...did Jerry pretend to give credit. It killed him. And now...all in baby...to show who runs the team.
Jimmy built the team, and Jerry wanted all the credit. Jerry wanted more attention and more control, and the cowboys have been average ever since. Aikman was lucky to be on that team, he was an average qb and never would've won anything without those other guys.
Misplaced modifiers are such fun. Who knew that Joe Buck had a feud with Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones. 😆 I think what you were trying to say is, "Troy Aikman shares with Joe Buck the REAL reason Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones couldn't get along."
It's Jerry Jones fault. He is single handly the worst thing the cowboys have. His overwhelming desire to be more than a rich dude and interject himself into daily and game decisions has been the best weapon against the cowboys. The Achilles heel, he has had great coaches and staff and fucks it up trying to be the leader and final say.
I'm not a Dallas fan but it is obvious that Jerry Jones was stupid for not doing anything it took to keep Jimmy Johnson as Cowboys head coach! You can have the best players in the league at every position and unless you have a good head coach who knows how to bring his players together as a team you are not going to win!
The hubris and arrogance of Jerry Jones has been costing the Cowboys for 3 decades now. Jimmy was the last coach to stand up to Jerry and exert some real power. Parcells wasn’t on the same level. Instead, a country club atmosphere pervades that whole team, thanks to Jerry. It’s a circus.
ego and thats why Jerry and Jimmie parted ways both had huge egos neither wanted to give credit to the other and each one thought they were the reason for the success when it was actually both of them together
Jimmy Johnson is a Great Coach, Jerry Jones is just the Owner.. So leave the job for jimmy to do what he does best... Jerry has too much eager that kills the team and himself.
As far as Troy goes, it really speaks-to the trickiness of a championship. How everything has to fall the right way: Injuries at a minimum (esp season ending), everyone sacrificing (Troy coulda broken every QB records that exists if it was just about Troy). Team before everything. Same with Tom Coughlin's 2008 and 2012 spectacular NYG championships - everyone working together. That's why I get this long stretch by the NYG (some teams have never won it all). I said back then if we never win another Super Bowl - I'll live in happiness remembering THESE two most recent NYG rings. And the next one will be here soon enough, and probably one right after that.
Cmon Troy. Jimmy wanted to go fishing?? Dude..! Even if he did, he was dedicated to winning/coaching. We fans can see clear as day what’s the real problem in Dallas. Three decades of NOTHING!! Thanks Jerry
Jerry Jones gets most of the blame, but I think BOTH men's egos were to blame for the divorce. I'm no fan of Jerry nor am I a hater of Jimmy, but though Jerry made the final call, I'd make a healthy wager that Jimmy did his share of pushing the rift.
unless A-Listers all athletes think that they're better than they are. My comeuppance was playing with/against former Rhode Island star Claude English in a league (not quite semi pro but close) filled with guys who'd tried out for pro teams (or went to pro camps). When I saw how good Clyde was (despite being drafted not making it), I pretty much came to realization. That I didn't belong with the Division One guys.
Per Troy's "Every athlete has an ELEVATED OPINION of how good they actually are." I played with (summers pre season's former Duke to Harvard transfer "Sunny" Jim Fitzsimmons. Of Fairfield's great Jesuits championship team of 1968-69. Best hs basketball team the State of CT has ever seen.. Featuring former Bob Cousy award winner (1974) Wally Halas at point guard. Our own teammate/star Russ Hunt was Soph year at Furman University (four year athletic scholarship). Three greatest players I ever had privilege of playing against/with. Fitz once had 64 in a game that he easily could have scored 90. They crushed a Warren Harding team (MBIAC of Bridgeport CT) that was easily the best had it not been for Fitz and Gator (Halas). Won by 30 twice (including State semi's) after losing to Harding by a point. Beating us by just a point i.e. a jumper by the great Fitz with just 7 seconds left. As devastating as this loss was for us (we'd been planning a revenge game vs Fairfield Prep since the previous spring - they'd been beating us by at least 50 for years/years.) As devastating as this loss was - it gave us instant credibility around the state - and teams began to fear US (we'd also beaten Harding by a point, forcing a 3 way tie for MBIAC lead - unheard of at our school - we'd long been league doormat). (Jim and Wally both became friends of ours - in Wally's case we both played vs. Jerry West up at Camp Woodbrook - Wally actually held his own - but I froze). LOL Couldn't quite grasp the fact that it was Jerry West GUARDING me (then a college player player 1972).

“Let’s watch….” (Roll clip, world class offensive line mows everyone out of Emmitt’s way) yup, that’s what I remember about Dallas winning ways.
It’s like this in every walk of life when you get a gold standard team. It’s tough to keep together because of pay scale personal eval and ego. Football bands sales fortune 10 firm
Well hiring a guy's ex-College Football Coach that he hated after Jimmy was let go must have Grinded Aikman gears for sure
I find it totally unsurprising that no one has mentioned Switzer here.
Ha! The headline made me think JOE BUCK was the one they couldn’t get along with! 😂
Monster Ego's....that's what made them great & made them part ways
Interesting comment about Belichick. Once Belichick lost Brady and went beyond ‘just coaching’ the team went south and hasn’t been the same.
That title is confusing
I wasn’t there so I don’t know, but looking back objectively at the cowboys since then, how can anyone, including Troy, think that Jimmy was the or a problem?! My goodness.
Success sometimes creates egos
WOW An I formation Pro Set What a Novel Idea 💡 Everyone gets involved Coaches Have to Coach 😊
Reportedly; Jimmy hardly ever left the offices when he was leading and coaching the Cowboys…sacrificing his marriage for the team.
Jimmy keeps his boat down in the Keys. I wonder how much time he spent fishing when he was coaching the Dolphins?
Jerry and his EGO !!! He couldnt stand to see Jimmy get the shine ✨ it was killing him to see Jimmy get the pats on the back
Ya let it slip by Jerruh... You an Jimmuh could of done some great things together... a couple more Bowls won... You guys had the best OL in the history of the NFL... Emmitt gets 5 yds a carry before he even gets touched that's how big Larry Allen & Co. would open holes for Emmitt...Oh well... 😏
Larry Allen still the strongest OL ever to play and he played 30 years ago
He could bench 705 lbs.
It's on RUclips look it up
I find it very difficult to believe that Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones didn't get along with Joe Buck. Joe Buck just seemed like the nicest guy
Ditka Thought he could win without Buddy Ryan!……….he never did!
Grammatically incorrect title.
Right? It reads like they couldn't get along with Buck. 😅
@1:19 ... I remember watching this live and thinking... why the Hell is the owner taking over the spotlight!? Jones destroyed this dynasty.
Troy is the man !
Real reason he left was he saw Troy showering with a strange man
Considering they came back and won a third SB after missing the year before, one would have to seriously think that not only could they have won 3 in a row, it could have been 4.
I think what you were trying to say is, "Troy Aikman shares with Joe Buck the REAL reason Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones couldn't get along."
Should tweak that title a bit. Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones couldn't get along with Joe Buck?
It's Jerry Jones fault. He is single handly the worst thing the cowboys have. His overwhelming desire to be more than a rich dude and interject himself into daily and game decisions has been the best weapon against the cowboys. The Achilles heel, he has had great coaches and staff and fucks it up trying to be the leader and final say.
Damn!!! I MISS those days. I am increasingly hating Jerry Jones for ruining my teams history!!
Joe Buck's the same way - he'll sacrifice self for the good of the
broadcast, on air partner, always respect Joe so much.
It's cuz Jimmy wanted to use hairspray and Jerry insisted on gel
This is life. That's how it rolls for most of us.
Jerry Jones ruined what could have been one of the greatest dynasties. I think they win 3 more Suoer Bowls in the 90s if Jimmy Johnson wasnt fired.
Fact is no one can coexist with Jerry Jones. If you want to be a successful leader you must let your team members claim ownership of that success.
Jerry Jones gets most of the blame, but I think BOTH men's egos were to blame for the divorce. I'm no fan of Jerry nor am I a hater of Jimmy, but though Jerry made the final call, I'd make a healthy wager that Jimmy did his share of pushing the rift.
I would bet it went more like that Jimmy simply refused to back up any. I doubt he pushed. MHO.
unless A-Listers all athletes think that they're better than they are. My
comeuppance was playing with/against former Rhode Island star
Claude English in a league (not quite semi pro but close) filled with
guys who'd tried out for pro teams (or went to pro camps). When I
saw how good Clyde was (despite being drafted not making it), I pretty
much came to realization.
Our own
teammate/star Russ Hunt was Soph year at Furman University (four year athletic scholarship).
I'm a Browns fan
We have a J Jones type owner in J Haslim
Title has nothing to do with the video.
"Troy Aikman shares REAL Reason Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones Couldn't Get Along with Joe Buck."
Why couldn't Jimmy and Jerry get along with Joe Buck? He seems like an okay guy.
Troy is no one to talk bad of anyone.
They couldn't get along with Joe Buck?? What did he ever do to them?
Jerry Jones should have known better. He had the best example in Bud Adams in what not to do.
