Yeah. I tuned in late and missed the sponsor etc announcements, then when "Drink up, there's more!" came on I lost my mind. It was the first soundtrack I used at home and will always have a special place in my heart
I got the feel of Grey Wardens from Dragon Age univ when the man said about drinking Hunter's Bane to become more like the enemy you hunt on. It's just like the ritual of Joining.
I am a lv 7 bloodhunter, I have the mutagens reconstruction and rapidity. Reconstruction descreases speed by 15 feet, but you regain 4 hp at the start of the turn and rapidity increases my speed by 20 feet, but giving me disadvantage on saving throws.
Easily my favorite Blood Hunter subclass. Celerity is great for a dex based Blood Hunter. If you start with 17 dex and then use a bonus action to take celerity, you get a +1 to dex and your modifier goes up by 1. That's a +1 to attack rolls, damage rolls, AND armor class (because you start with studded leather) at level 3.
Great video, as always. You strike an excellent balance between accessibility and thoroughness with your explanations! Please keep the great content coming!
Any plans to cover the order of the lycan subclass that was released separately from the main class? It's what I'm currently playing and I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
Campaign doesn't just take place a little further in time but on an entirely different continent. Also, Blood Hunter is OP but since they keep hurting themselves they at least need a healer handy if they don't take a feat in that regard. Considering Taliesin, not sure which of the Orders he'll pick but he does like focusing on an attacker character...
It's much darker in tone yes; that's why Matt got gleeful about being able to use the Witcher soundtrack. The setting is more Witcher than typical fantasy like Tal'Dorei.
Great video! I appreciate these in-depth, understandable overviews. Are you planning on doing a video on the Order of the Lycan subclass? It is a separate document released by Matt Mercer for the Blood Hunter.
I surely am -- folks have been asking for it all morning. If I'd had my wits about me I would've remembered it for this release, haha. It's on the list, hopefully early next week release :)
Hey I’ve watch a lot of your videos just to see what I’d like to play and learn more about the game (I’m super new to D&D) I’ve been really impressed by your content the level of professionalism and your explanations are great you definitely deserve more subs keep up the great work
One of my favorite mutagens is probably mobility but its very bad for a non dex based character I'm going to be seeing how this plays out in the next couple months hopefully it wont be too harmful
also now I want to figure out some kind of Blood Hunter dip for a Alchemsit Artificer.. really play up the "I can't use mnagic... but my blood is an amazing sythesizing item"
The Side effect of Mobility isn't a Downside, if you use it AFTER you've already rolled initiative, go through your first turn as normal then after your attacks drink it as a bonus action, your initiative score goes down , oh look your turn happens again this round.
If you use it in combat and an enemy has a initiative roll of 1 lower your turn would be changed to after theirs. At least that is what I would do to keep players from doing what you said and getting away free.
I dont understand how the mutation score works. Your character level ÷4 rounded up? Surely then until level 8 that's gonna be a 1 which really isnt a big benefit when it comes to adding stuff to ability scores for certain mutagens
Hey Sophie -- the math works a smidge differently thanks to the 'rounded up' qualifier. At level 5, 5/4 = 1.25, which rounded up becomes 2! So the Mod is effectively 1 for levels 1-4, 2 for levels 5-8, 3 for levels 9-12, etc, which helps keep to a more 'normal' bonus growth cadence for 5e.
Titan Bear Gaming thanks! Yeah that seems a bit better! Im playing a blood hunter soon and dont know what order to pick yet but am thinking that mutant may tie in best with my backstory- do you think it is a worthwhile order to pick in terms of comparing the mutagen effects to the negative side effects?
Worthwhile? For sure -- especially if the stats you're penalizing are already high enough that a mutagen side effect still keeps you with a positive modifier. A lot of the side-effects are specifically chosen to be opposite to their benefit, which makes for some really compelling drama at the table. You should embrace the high risk high reward concept with this archetype. Personally, I like the negatives since they are not all just 'you lose ability scores'. You get neat story things like sensitivity to daylight, or you focus on offensive output at the expense of defensive. Lean into it, I say :)
Titan Bear Gaming thanks so much for the help! I think i'll go for it then 😊 it wont let me feel OP and i guess lets me be able to strategise a bit more! And any consequences make for interesting RP! But yeah, thanks again for the tips, i appreciate the help 😊
My core advice for anyone considering Mutant is to really look at the mutagens and fall in love with some. Let them define your character. Just like Warlock invocations, let them set your character apart in terms of their personalities and personal goals -- don't just treat them as a set of spells you have access to. Flight would be a huge aspect of your hero, same with a hard offensive or defensive edge, or a sudden leg-up in social interactions. Integrate into your persona :)
Definitely the most complex sub-class in terms of forward planning and knowledge of the game. One thing you didn't seem to realise (or at least didn't say) is that you can drink your mutagens at any time and they will last until you can concoct new mutagens. So drinking them during combat is the least effective way to use them. Instead drink them before combat if you can, or better yet if they aren't going to get in the way drink them immediately after you finish your short rest. Again though, that really requires knowin what you are doing, both in game as your character and out of game as the player.
That's a great point about the duration of mutagen effects, Kyle. That's significant enough it should really be at the forefront of player's minds when considering this archetype.
So.. is it intentional that they can't make a mutagen after a long rest? So.. they have to I guess... take a short rest after a long rest, or before a long rest. or get something that lets them logn rest in 4 hours instead of the more and then maaybe get to do it during a watch. Mutagen Craft At 3rd level, you can take a short rest to concoct a single mutagen. Consuming a single mutagen requires a bonus action, and the effects (including side effects) last until you complete a short or long rest, or spend an action to focus and flush the toxins from your system.
Looks like I missed this comment originally! I hope you caught my Order of the Lycan video since I released it a few days ago -- if not, find it here! ruclips.net/video/6UqIkxKLTQ8/видео.html
Honestly Matt Mercer being a big fan of the Witcher series, with Blood hunter first was named Witch Hunter and incredibly influenced the class creation. Plus the potions and supernatural features of the class are eerily similar to how the common folk perceive witchers as evil that hunts evil, but in the older ages they were considered a sword of light in the darkness
inm hving alot of fun with the order of the mutant, the flavor is nice and the way people react to a blood hunter is interesting, and for a nice flavor i have it so that my mutagens, instead of beeing poitons to frick, that they're injectors that he stabs into his arm when using them, abit more dramatic and fun
Im playing my first campaign right now and im a Yaun-Ti Abomination mutation blood hunter, and im trying to learn good combinations of mutagens to use, my stats are LVL 8 STR 16 DEX 12 CON 14 INT 11 WIS 14 CHA 12. I am using a battle axe and hand crossbow. any tips on anything
also if i use a mutagen that has a side effect of disadvantage on all dex throws, but use the one that gives me advantage on dex will it cancel out or will over power the others effect? (example)
I cannot read through this without the witcher theme playing in the background
Some solid themes in that series. Did you hear on #CriticalRole that they have permission to use the themes on the stream now? Too good.
Strong thematic parity :)
I honestly got the Witcher feel more. But yeah Grey Warden makes sense too
I am a lv 7 bloodhunter, I have the mutagens reconstruction and rapidity.

Definitely a huge impact bonus, Sajan. And at lvl 3 no less.
Just found your channel today and you're fast becoming one of my favourite D&D channels. I really like your commentary and your video style
Aw thanks 56sketch! What a kind thing to say. Welcome to the family mate!
Great video again. It's cool that you are reviewing these custom classes
Thanks TRQ.
This is my favorite because the flavor of how you become a hunter reminds me of how Grey Wardens in Dragon Age drink darkspawn blood.
Yeah, very evocative origin story. Love the thematic element here.
Great video, as always. You strike an excellent balance between accessibility and thoroughness with your explanations! Please keep the great content coming!
Your wish is my command!
Any plans to cover the order of the lycan subclass that was released separately from the main class? It's what I'm currently playing and I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
Absolutely -- it'll be out early next week! I'm keen on your feedback as well, with you actively playing it. Welcome to the party Andrew!
Some of my new favorite videos. I'd love to get your take on really fun and powerful multi-classing builds.
Thanks George! That would be a good segment.
And that new continent seems pretty different so far!

Thanks Raging Panda. Welcome to the adventuring party!

Report back my man!
also now I want to figure out some kind of Blood Hunter dip for a Alchemsit Artificer.. really play up the "I can't use mnagic... but my blood is an amazing sythesizing item"
You think a DM would let to poison pcs/monsters with a mutagen?
I don't see a reason why not. Its supposed to be a pretty vile substance, so it'd make sense to me.
The Side effect of Mobility isn't a Downside, if you use it AFTER you've already rolled initiative, go through your first turn as normal then after your attacks drink it as a bonus action, your initiative score goes down , oh look your turn happens again this round.

Have you considered doing an updated guide, given all the changes to Bloodhunter?
I have made a goblin that is a Mutant BloodHunter and an Alchemist Artificer legit one of the most fun characters I’ve ever made
Matt has imbibing a potion as a bonus action, but RAW use an object is actually an action.
Good distinction here.

This order is so cool especially since Matt buffed some of the more interesting ones so the downsides aren't so bad.
Mr Mercer's love of pathfinder is obvious:)
Oh Mollymauk Tealeaf . . . . . poor, poor Mollymauk

Big question. Does alluring give you full freedom to change into whatever or is it restricted
What about the order of the lycan? Did it become its own thing? Thought it was part of the blood hunter as well...
Looks like I missed this comment originally! I hope you caught my Order of the Lycan video since I released it a few days ago -- if not, find it here! ruclips.net/video/6UqIkxKLTQ8/видео.html
yep i watched it as soon as it went up, you even replied to my comment on it :D
Ahh good good okay. :)
you and i look more like brothers than my brother and i do.
Is it the beard? Its probably the beard.
Hmmm not sure if Blood Hunter or Witcher.
We'll go with both! Its one of the richest thematic concepts, thats for sure.
Honestly Matt Mercer being a big fan of the Witcher series, with Blood hunter first was named Witch Hunter and incredibly influenced the class creation. The stimpack stylistic element sounds fun! What level have you gotten to? Are you toying with multiple mutagens yet?
So do the mutagens you’ve drunk, stay active until your next short/long rest?
I'm pretty sure ye
What is the new critcal roll campaign 2 episode 1 call?
They titled it "Curious Beginnings". ruclips.net/video/byva0hOj8CU/видео.html
Order of the Lycan??
Look for it early this week Jacoby! Its next on the setlist.

So, pathfinders alchemist. I got it
I know this is 2 years ago but I'm getting big Geralt witcher vibes
They nerf it so much now, oof
