@tmWasted except that's Sigillum, not Sigil. Sigil is an English word derived from the Latin word and it's only pronounced Sijil. The exception is the city in Planescape which is pronounced with a G sound, no matter how awkward that is.
Sounds like he took the Dragonmarks from Eberron and skinned it for a sorcerer subclass. I like it. I also like his tattoo rules Mercur just introduced in the last crit role episode, s2e41.
This is such a cool subclass honestly. I'm glad you covered it! Have you done Cobalt Soul yet? If you haven't, remember to check out the UPDATED rules instead of the original version as Matt has adapted and improved it as actively playing it revealed some flaws.
I like the rune child, but in the short time the character is level 1, the level 1 abilities are unusable, since there are no sorcery points yet and you don't get a free charged rune at the beginning of the day (unless Matt Mercer has done an errata on this). If I have a player with this in my game, I might add a free charged rune at the beginning of the day, and perhaps let that evolve into a free charged rune upon rolling initiative if there are no runes already charged. Or something to make it usable at level one.
Hey WrittenInShadow, I didn't spend enough time explicitly covering it in the video, but you do have something you can do at level-1 with the power set. You can still spend the action to actively charge a run, without any sorcery points. Since you've only got 1 essence rune in total at level one, it effectively makes it the same as pre-buffing your Aegis ability. Then when you hit 2 you come into the usual action economy I described in the video. Hope this helps -- your suggestions for amping level-1 are also very good, especially the initiative related suggestion. Cheers!
Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 1 Episode 40- Now I can see how Gilmore could battle an ancient dragon! Even if he couldn't win, the fight must have been freaking epic!
Thanks for the video! I'm fascinated by the story and roleplay components of this class, but was having trouble wrapping my head around what makes them fun and cool in actual gameplay. The girl I have in mind is 15 and as soon as I read that there tend to be magic casters who seek these rare runechildren, I could see my DM having so much fun with this (I really love an in-depth character so he tends to use my background to create the main plot and build the others into it in a very active way, just since they take a little longer to wrap their heads around their characters). My current character is 31 with a dark rogue assassin backstory, and DM and I have talked a lot about me playing a less repressed, younger character with some magic prowess in the next campaign. As soon as we found this class, we started brainstorming a party of this girl and her protectors where she kind of comes into her own and becomes just as powerful as a defense and buffer for them. Anyway, I've listened to podcasts with druids and wizards so I was looking at those classes until I found the runechild, and this video really helped me understand Sorcerer a lot better, so thank you! I'm less nervous to tackle it now.
Sounds like Matt read the "Death gate cycle" by Weiss and Hickman, there was a race of magic workers that used magical tattoos that glowed as they used magic.
@@TitanGamingTV. With this bloodline you could also do thematic effects, so have specific runes glow when you cast spells, no actual effects, just glowy special effects.
@@TitanGamingTV I read it a long time ago, when Weiss and Hickman were on fire with their Dragonlance books. My memory of this series is that I really enjoyed it. So even if you don't see the similarity you'll probably enjoy the books. If you've read other things by them and liked them I think it's a safe bet you'll like these books.
Yes! I really enjoyed your insight into the previous classes, glad you're continuing the series. Having read through it myself, I love the theme but feel that the runes don't give you enough of a benefit for having to use sorcery points. I don't feel that it actually competes with meta magic. The aegis dice doesn't scale (d6 is kinda low at high level) and using runes equal to spell level just to ignore resistance when you could just use a different spell seems...lackluster.
Ah I apologize, maybe I wasnt clear enough -- you get the runes for free any time you spend your normal sorcery points. So if you spend 3 sorcery points to perform a meta-magic, you ALSO get 3 charged runes from it. Its completely on-top of your existing sorcery point usage.
Titan Bear Gaming Thanks I completely missed that. I literally had the book in front of me and I still missed it! Can I also just say that I love that you reply to comments. Gives a really good sense of community
I make the videos for you guys, so I love camping the comment page on releases. Soon I'll use the new 'debut' feature RUclips has to really connect with y'all. Glad to have helped :)
I love the theme of this subclass and it seems generally balanced. However, if I'm not mistaken, it gives you zero benefits at first level. You don't pick up any sorcery points until second level when you get Font of Magic, which means you have no way of charging your essence runes at first level. Although you gain the Essence Runes and Glyphs of Aegis abilities at first level, they can't do anything other than look fancy until second.
Hey Ben -- I didnt make a big enough deal of it in the video, but you still have the ability to spend an action to charge an essence rune outright. So you can pre-charge your rune to get the Aegis effect at level 1.
Welcome back :) My initial thought of incorporating "Rune Child" as a way of creating sorcerers, Maybe it is a Dwarven way of creating more arcane magic users or a darker cult that uses them for nefarious means (maybe a link to a Cthulian old one on a side note have you seen the Cthulhu Mythos source book from Peterson games eu.petersengames.com/ ) maybe as supercharged sacrifices which you have to save and there by release rune children into your game world?
Hey Alex. I was wondering on how one would fix the unearthed arcana for theurgy as it seems like it takes everything that the subclasses from cleric have and even taking the channel divinity when you have the divine arcana seems kinda weird in my opinion. As well as the fact you get the 17th level cleric domain benefit at 14th level.
@@TitanGamingTV I've never been a sorcerer fan, so I'll pass on playing a Rune child. But I'm playing a artificer so you should do an analysis on that class!
@@TitanGamingTV mine is a whole class that ranges from similarities to elemental monk, eldritch knight, and glyph of warding expanded spellcaster between the subclass similarities. I even had concept art commissioned.
I find it a bit weird that you can't use this stored magic power to attack. Shouldn't you be able to use the runes to unleash attacks of. pure magic energy, or make spells deal even more damage?(I know thats what metamagic already does, especially empowered spell, but I still think that it would be a cool idea to be able to attack with the magic building inside you)
Truth be told, you're still able to engage the action to charge your single essence rune, letting you pre-charge your Aegis rune. So your action economy isnt as good, but you are able to utilize the powers. Cheers!
@@TitanGamingTV well, since I've only DMed I can say that I love the style of the class, and well if one of my players is going to be a sorcerer, I'll point them to this video and this class

I won’t spoil anything else then. 😁
Most flavorful magical tattoos in D&D history will go to Planescape: Torment. Truly sublime
I like that it doesn't Stop you from doing Sorcerer things. While you're casting spells and using Sorcery points you're building rune charge.
