  • Hidden down two flights of stairs of a former city shoe shop lies a secret underworld in the shadows of Norwich Castle. Discover secrets of the past in a subterranean exploration of an ancient street two storeys below ground level. The so called “Diagon Alley” was once located in the castle ditch before it was gradually filled to create the street level we see today. Descend into the depths of another dimension to explore abandoned houses from the 15th century, animal outbuildings, 300 year old graffiti and a medieval undercroft. The ghost of a boy called Jonathon is said to reside in a weaving room one level below ground which dates back to the 1400s. He is said to be particularly attentive to females by gentling pulling at their clothing or stroking their hair. He is said to be scared at being told by his weaving family that he needs to start work. Two levels below ground in the old medieval street a heavy door has been known to inexplicably slam shut and whispery voices have been heard. This buried underground street was also utilised as a make shift war time bunker during WW2 as local people sheltered from the bombing raids of the German Luftwaffe.

Hi Chris - thanks for sharing this - I don’t think I’m aware of this one - lots of undercrofts in the older parts of the city and the chalk mines of course - lots to explore under the streets of Norwich - most as you say inaccessible though

As a young lad my two cousins and myself were heading (this was roughly 50 years ago) into Manchester town centre, there was some new boarding at the side of a road in a old industrial area of the city that had a little gap that we pulled a liitle further more, so we could peer through, what we saw has never left my memory, there was a wide tunnel and you could see a road going gradually downwards and curving off to the left, there were single storey shops either side, some had flat-fronted windows and some were bow-fronted all with small panes of glass, there was a pavement in front of them with street gas lamps, the road was a cobbled one, all in immaculate condition except for dust and cobwebs, if ever there was a real Diagon Alley then that was it.
Another amazing thing about it was the actual entrance to it started between two tall brick-built railway arches, there were two very large old wooden doors that were opened, the new boarding that had been put up was to stop prying eyes from seeing. I could never understand why it wasn't cleaned up and turned into a tourist attraction.

That is an incredible story - how fascinating - thank-you for sharing this - surely this hidden street has to be turned into a tourist attraction - although it is intriguing to think secret places like this could still exist in the modern world 🙂

Hi - yes you’re right - many chalk tunnels too and WW2 bunkers - probably a few more in and around the castle which remain hidden - lots of medieval undercrofts too - about 60 in total across the city - the largest collection in the country 🙂
