  • I leave the dry barren centre of the island and take a short cut through an epic track west towards Wānaka. With it being very touristy I decide to head north out of town, I find an incredible lake to camp on the shores of on my solo motorbike camping adventure around New Zealand on the Royal Enfield Scram 411.

    A funny thing about St Bathans and more precisely Vulcan Hotel. Last August we were in the South Island and had planned to take photos at various landmarks by drone of both of us in them too use as a desktop picture. We drove to St Bathans only to find carpet cleaning vans outside with their hoses going into the building, we just drove on. We now have the old Post Office at Ophir on the desktop.

    Interesting...... The shore line at the lake looks similar to the shoreline in Baja, on the Sea of Cortez. In many places the mountain face just runs straight into the sea, no beach at all, or only a sliver of rocky sand. I'm in Loreto, BCS now, and this week I’ll start looking for some dirt track. BTW..... If every day is epic, there’s no reason to to say so. I love the pics at the end, as always, they’re epic. 😎

    What incredible ride Joe, and those pictures, wow this is type place you don’t ever want to leave, you said a line that I use to hear from a guy that had a show when I was younger, it was called On the road with Charles Curalt, he would end his show with, wonder what’s up the road around the next bend, anyway, I notice when you camp I do not see much in the way of preparing a meal, just wonder if u do or not and if so is it dehydrated meal, me and my buddy carry these and some are better than others, anyway great video as always, stay safe my brotha. Rob U.S.

    • @freewayproject
      @freewayproject  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks Rob, it is great to hear you enjoyed the episode. I searched On the road with Charles Curalt and found a few old episode on youtube, before I knew it I was 20mins in haha.
      A few reasons for the lack of seeing what I eat in each episode. If you go back through the Australia series you'll probably see why, but
      I had restriction on the plane to 23kg (50lb) so limited space.
      the days are normally quite long and at the end of each day I have to download all the footage from the cameras and recharge everything, so it limits time. If I then to have to prepare food, then cleaning the cooking stuff (find water to clean) it means it's later in the night before I can get to sleep, which build day after day and I don't want to be tired riding on the bike.
      Also the cost, most of the time I eat something like tin tuna or fruit or raw veggies, it keeps the cost down to a few dollars (the dehydrated meal here are $15 - $20 each), I don't have much of a budget to do these trips, that's why I am mainly free camping also and Royal Enfield let me use the bike for free> I get a lot of comments from people (trying to be helpful, which is great information) suggesting gear that I should get, but I can not afford to get anything else. My priority is the experience so I am totally fine with making small sacrifices (but I don't really see them as sacrifices just part of the adventure).

    Not sure 🤔 if that Bank was when NZ was part of Australia ( if you didn’t know mate ) Australia and New Zealand have always had a close relationship. But for a few months in 1840-41 our connection was even closer - New Zealand was formally made an extension of the New South Wales colony

    Awesome!! Loved it. Darn tent zippers hey! I have a phobia for zippers since our tent zipper broke in Zambia/Tanzania on our 6 month trip a few years ago. Letting every critter into the tent including the dreaded malaria carrying type. Zips are important hey. That 72 sticker on the mirror might need to do a ceremony and remove it (might depict the amount of gates you will be opening on the next stretch hahaha). Anyways safe travels further, looking forward to the next video!

Yes there were a lot of gates in that one. The sticker was on it when I got the bike off royal enfield, as they are letting me use it I want to "try" give it back the same way I got it, hopefully I can keep it in once piece.

      Thanks mate, it is great to hear you enjoyed the episode. The Scram was great, I'll do a review of the bike and the differences between it and the Himalaya at the end of the series. The Scram is definitely better on tight twisty turns on the tarmac with the 19inch front wheel, it was great for this type of trip. You'd only need the Himalayan if you're going to tackle more difficult off road trails and tracks.

    Do the original tyres have enough grip? Than you for your great videos!!

    • @freewayproject
      @freewayproject  15 дней назад

      It all depends on the terrain you're riding, but there was enough grip from the CEAT tyres on the off road terrain I took it on. Episode 9 had a decently step climb with loose larger rocks and I had no issue, water crossing were also fine over boulders. I think if you were trying to get up on steeper climbs and it was muddy that's where you would probably want to get tyres with a more aggressive tread.

    Do you not have any problems with wild animals when camping. I live in Bulgaria and still like wild camping but we have Bears wolves, foxes, badgers.
    Last year i was in Romania and used a camp site that had an electric tall fence to keep the bears out but my tent still got raided with foxes in the night. You never seem to have any problems,or never mention that you do. I get to the point i just don't get any sleep in my tent anymore.

    • @freewayproject
      @freewayproject  3 месяца назад +1

      No, I have never had issues with animals. New Zealand definitely has no animals to worry about. In Australia if you keep your tent zipped up at all time (even if going out for only 30 seconds) then no issue as it's just the snakes spiders, scorpions etc that are the main thing to watch out for. Unless you are in the very north with Crocodile but that's more understand where to camp. On my journeys I am only ever camping over night so I never leave the area around the tent so nearly all animals here won't come near humans.

      I am not exactly sure as I stopped 5 times to film and one of those was with the drone so that was probably over 30mins just for that one stop. I was at St Bathans around lunch time and would have gotten to Wanaka I think around 4ish. to get to the start of the track was around 20mins and it was only 30mins once out of the track to Wanaka. I think the track (Thomson Gorge Road) is only about 40km long, so an hour or an hour and a half I think. I hope that helps.

    Hi Joe, I have a question for you. I am looking at getting either the Himalayan or Scram, for some off road adventures, probably nothing super taxing. Dirt, gravel and forest logging roads. I was just wondering which one of these two bikes would be best. They both look very capable but I prefer the look of the Scram. Just thought I'd ask your thoughts. Many thanks Steve

    • @freewayproject
      @freewayproject  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Stephen, I'll do a full review of the bike at the end of the series, but the main different between the 2 is the front wheel, the Scram with the smaller wheel handles better on the tighter twisty roads. If you are not going to do anything more off road that I did in episode 4 (river crossing rough rocky tracks) and episode 9 (a steeper rocky track) the Scram was comfortable in both situation and you like the look of the Scram better then it would definitely be the one to go with, The Himalayan with the bigger front wheel is an advantage when you're dealing with bigger rocks and even more nasty trails.
      I hope that helps.
