Central Otago is where I grew up, spent so much time 4wding around the place, living in Perth now and watching you enjoy my home as much as I do fills me with joy and makes me miss home. Thank you for doing the place justice and getting out to some of the lesser known and seldom visited places👍
Awesome ride, Bannockburn used to be my playground when I was a kid, I rode my dirtbikes up there all the time, last time I did Carricktown was a few years back coming back on the MTB FS, rode up the old Quartz town side and back down Carricktown, epic place esp in Summer for a bike, Nevis river has some great Trout fishing further along and yeah you'd probably struggled to get the bike through! I rescued a couple of Adventure bikers of New Years at the far end the last big ford where a TT500 had drown and filled the airbox and carb with water, poor buggers had ben there for hours while no one stopped to helped, I had my big LC 80 and plenty of tools and being a bike enthusiast was keen to help em out. good guys too. the fords were plenty deep in Summer so now be well flowing Id say, though my big girl would get through no probs. Glad you took the Hawksburn road as well that's an awesome loop into Clyde, ya should have stopped at the Old Post Office, they have great food and coffee there too, and plenty of places to camp if ya had got a bit tied up there, its pretty hard to leave once ya settle in there, I never want to leave that place, beers pretty good too haha. I also went up to the PoolBurn and Manorburn dams over Xmas New Years, but the gate was locked on both tracks to Alex so had to turn back unfortunately still a great run, so props for going up there, def out of your way but worth every mile of it. look forward to the next day, cheers mate, btw NZ can be 4 seasons in one day, esp this time of year, ya doing well though and dam the miles ya doing each day is impressive considering allot of it is also gravel roads and dirt tracks.🤘 Next time def come in Jan or late Jan early Feb best weather!
Thanks mate, great to hear you are enjoying the series. As I am riding I keep thinking there has so much more out hear to explore and as you have mentioned there is. Just means I'll have to come back again and probably again after that. I would have been epic to explore the area as a kid, so many cool adventures I can imagine you would have had. I am loving ever bit of this journey.
Wow Joe, another awesome episode, you are showing the real New Zealand like I'v not seem before, may because of your really special photographers eye ...... it just a great series that's for sure .... cheers
Thanks mate, great to hear you are enjoying the series. Yes so many unique landscapes in New Zealand, this one surprised me, totally different but epic all the same.
Cracking episode yet again. There's a couple of big name RUclipsrs airing Aotearoa motorcycle trips right now, and this one is just so much better. I didn't watch it yesterday as I wanted some time to really settle in and watch without distractions. A good decision. I'm enjoying this as much as my own trip, and it's not as cold!
Thanks mate, great to hear you are enjoying the series. i haven't had to stop and shelter due to the cold which is great, so it's not affecting the trip.
Thanks mate, it's great to hear you are still enjoying the series. Definitely a fun track to ride, it's wild New Zealand keeps throwing up new unique landscapes to explore.
Have you read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?" Your Art is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Travel. I'm sure there is plenty of cursing behind the scenes. But it is great Art to remind us that life can be simple and sweet. We have the privilege in the west to put ourselves in the way of the majesty of the world. Good on you Joe.
Hi Ralf, no, I have not ready Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, I struggle with ready books as I am dyslexic so they become quite a mission to get through. No cursing behind the scenes as there are no expectation on these trips, so there is nothing to get worked up about, what ever happens is all part of the adventure. Thanks mate, great to hear you enjoyed the episode. Oh that a bummer you can not free camp in Italy. I guess when I ride through there i'll have to focus on something else unique about the place, maybe the food :)
You have a really great bike :) how it goes throw the ancient rocks, very cool Also half-desert looks like wasteland, amazing references for the artists
Yes the landscape is other worldly, and the fact there are so many different landscapes on this island is also mind-blowing. You can see why lots of movies get made here.
Watching all the way from India. Someday my husband and I would love to come see these amazing places. We have some Kiwi friends , so hopefully someday!! Thank you for your videos. You definitely should try Ladakh, India. You’ll get lots of dirt road and river crossings, I saw you love those. 😅
Thanks you for the support. It is great to hear you are enjoying the series, New Zealand is definitely worth exploring, such an amazing place. I am working on getting to Ladakh, India, not sure when but I am keen to explore there, it looks amazing.
After you turned around and all the way to the town and one lane bridge....which we have many in this province...be that they are always green...don't know why....anyway, I got side tracked, that is the roads I ride now...a little older. Heading out in a bit to do the first ride this year. As always, Great ride...way to go, Joe. Garth
Oh wow, you're right it just click, most if not all bridges are green, I wonder if it is like the Sydney harbour bridge, the reason it is grey is that it was the only colour they could get enough paint for. Maybe there was a sale of green paint when they made the bridges and they stuck with it haha. Sorry had to google it, there was nothing specific about New Zealand but there was this "It was a shade designed to complement the natural surroundings" Have fun on your ride.
Very nice as always. 👍 I'll have to get there someday. I just made it into Baja on Tuesday on the ferry, landing in La Paz. There's TONS of desert here, broad valleys full of cactus, sand, and rocks. On the sides there's rugged mountains with almost no vegetation, only steep crumbling sides, tumbling rocks working their way to the bottom. Highway One coming up from La Paz takes you mostly through the center, going through high desert, then turning right at one point it takes you to the coast, and the Sea of Cortez, passing through the mountains on some lovely twisties. As you head down you can see bits of blue between the rocks until you get closer, then you see expanses of blue/green beauty. We are truly blessed to be Himalayan riders.
Yes these track and valleys are amazing, the more I explore here the more unique places I find, so many different kinds of landscape. The scram is definitely getting the job done. Glad you are enjoying the series.
Thanks Joe. Almost as many gates as bridges crossed!! Who’d have thought NZ had such a beautiful desert landscape🤔🤔 I’m wondering where to next Joe. New bike?? And new country?? I need some cryptic hints. 😁😁 Annie
Yes so many gates and bridges. Yes it surprised me too with the landscape. no trip is confirmed until i am on the ground with a bike under me, it's a long shot but hoping the bike and ground are the same in the next one.
those ruins, we've plenty of them in morocco, but unfortunately non preserved, we find many in southern provinces, i love exploring them and think how our ancestors build them
Yes, it's amazing how different the landscape is across this island. I was surprise to see the sign Heart of the Desert, if it wasn't raining it would have definitely looked like one.
Wow that was amazing what a diverse country NZ is. Capturing this on video and sharing is a mission in itself and I take my hat off to you for your dedication. Plus each episode is like going on a journey of learning about life and what waits beyond, magic waits beyond ⚔️
Thanks Frank, great to hear you are still enjoy the series, it was a little different terrain on this one and the landscape in New Zealand keeps changing totally different but still amazing.
You suffered for your art on this one mate! Stunning scenery and a fantastic narrative. I usually watch these videos at the end of the day and they are just the thing to watch with a cold beer. Thanks for keeping the journey going Joe.
Yes, I'll do a reviews at the end, I find I need to do a lot of km on all types of terrain to get an idea of a bike. It's great to hear you are enjoying the series.
Enjoying this series of 'home'. I love doing the loop from Canterbury, to the brown of Central Otago, to the green of Westland and back to the gold of Canterbury. Now for all you rabid lot talking about NZ being so beautiful, .... just cut it out. NZ does not exist (even on the world maps displayed in many of our embassies). [jediMindTrick] This is not the south Pacific paradise you are looking for [/jediMindTrick].
Thanks mate, great to hear you are enjoying it. Another place I am going to have to come back to explore, I have missed what seems like hundreds of great places, I got as close as the bottom of Lake Pukaki, I should have made the right hand turn and explore up there.
Did you end up catching up with that sheep you were chasing? I'd imagine even the scram would eventually tire her out... Those roads Joe..... breathtakingly beautiful.
haha. Yes no matter where I go on this island there is something new and awesome. The rocky hill climb was fun and then dropping into the next valley was hard to capture on camera how beautiful it was.
Amazing Vid! We finished our 2 week 3500km tour and now the daunting task to edit all the footage. Looking forward to your next vid, be safe out there!
It is definitely getting the job done, I don't have to think about it and to me that's a great bike where I can just get on with exploring. Well the main difference between the Scram and Himalayan beside some cosmetics the seat, wind screen and dash, is the front wheel, so if you changed the wheel you'd basically be on a Himalayan.
Hey, now you're in my neck of the woods... sorry about the weather. It was almost certainly a wasp (yellowjacket) that stung you. There are a lot of them around Central Otago because of all the orchards. No hornets in NZ.
Oh the weather is all part of the adventure, it didn't stop me exploring. Ahhh a wasp, well it was weird feeling the barb go in but I couldn't let go of the handle bars at the time as I was on a rocky decent.
@@freewayproject they are such arseholes. Keep up the awesome videos man, only recently found your channel but I'm a big fan already. I'm a 4WD guy but am looking to get my first bike after winter is over. Leaning heavily towards the new Himalayan 450.
It seems a lot of people use the word dirt bike for a wider category of bikes than I do, I should have been clearer, my apologies. I was talking about enduro bikes (road legal dirt bikes) at around 100kg. I was specifically thinking of my KTM 250 EXC-F which makes rocky steep hill climbs a breeze when making my comment.
@@freewayproject for sure ! A drz is still only about 135kg wet compared to 190 odd or whatever the scram is, I’d say it bridges the gap well between an enduro and an adv.
I've had a European wasp string before while riding but had the luxury of it happening just as I was riding into a small town so I could stop but it was up my sleeve and absolutely got at me. I react too. Not allergic but I react, and nothing was open. 40km to the next town where they stung me again. $27 for a box of antihistamines 😂 Also, the word you were looking for is "New Zealandish"
I must have been concentrating on keeping the bike upright on the track as I pasted higher up the ridge and didn't look left down to it at that moment.
I thought that😂 There were so many mine sites on both sides of the track from the bottom of the hill including some vertical shafts so it pays to be careful walking around
Amazing work, great editing, just wondering at 11:34, you surely went that far and back to reclaim the cam?😂 but truly meticulous, trying to present the best cinematic view, binged in all ur vids, thanks.
Thanks mate, great to hear you enjoyed the episode. Oh it just have me an excuse to ride that section of track again 😁. And there was no one else on that track when I sent through.
Great videos and great scenery - loving the journey mate. Production question - when you're filming the B-roll where you ride past the camera and off into the distance, are you doing that with a drone, and fly it up to you, or going back and fetching the camera :) Mr brother-in-law's partner comes from the south island and he's done a couple of the tracks you have by 4wd and said how great it was - but nothing in his photos captured the country you've shown so far. Keen to go myself now.
Thanks mate, great to her you enjoy it. yes this island just keep delivering unique stunning landscapes. If it's a low shot tanked within a metre or so off the ground I have put a camera down and have to go back and fetch it, but normally done on a fun section of track so I don't mind doing it twice.
the north end that I saw was stunning, it just means I'll have to come back and do the hold road next time, I have a long list of places I have missed and need to do next time.
HI mate, The music comes from one of the online music providers. As the music is on youtube you have to have permission to use it other wise youtube will not play the audio or delete the video. So there are website out there that provide what is called Royalty Free Music which means they have been release for use for a fee. There are several site like Premiumbeats, Artist, Epidemicsounds and more.
Yes they gate are for animals, the land is private land, not public land but the farmers are kind enough to let people travel through their land as long as you respected it and shut the gates so the animals don't run away.
1st Bungy jumping place in the world where it all started. thanks to AJ Hacket... don't know what dirt bike your talking about every 15 hours service ....have you owned a DR 650 or a XR600 they go for 5000k before servicing. Ya talking about motocross bikes.
I should have clarified "Dirt bike" as the word is probably used differently in different areas I was referring to Enduro bike which are basically road legal motocross bikes. I have a 250 KTM EXC-F, light, awesome bike, eats up technical trails but as mention needs a lot of pampering.
Thanks!..lot of dirt today ..continued safe travels
Yes a great area to explore Larry a lot of fun trails, thank you again for the continued support.
Awesome, thanks for taking us along for a great ride
It's great to hear you are enjoying the series Ray

Hi Joe, great video. That looked like a really good days riding. You and the Scram did a mighty job. 👍🇦🇺
Thanks mate, great to hear you enjoyed that one. Yes great day riding and the Scram does surprisingly well up a rough rocky track.
Mate, your videos are awesome. Glad you're enjoying NZ.
Thanks mate, great to hear you are enjoying the series. Definitely having a ball in New Zealand, such an amazing place to explore.
Another wonderful video Joe. I really like the tracks you rode, and yet again a very unusual landscape. But it's spectacular. I felt cold for you. 👍😁

The ability of Scram and Himalayan to go through these kind of trails really impreses me, great video as always 😁
it's the Scram is doing a better job than I expected, it has had no issues on the rougher terrain.

$27 for a box of antihistamines 😂
Also, the word you were looking for is "New Zealandish"
oh that doesn't sound fun with it up your sleeve. Thanks for the word 👌🏻
@@freewayproject to be clear, I made that word up 😉
Awesome. Looks like you copped a bit of wind burn mate?.
Thanks mate, yes New Zealand just keeps delivering.
One of the joys of being on the road.
@@freewayproject I like riding with my visor open and cop wind burn all the time. Just part and parcel of riding.
Hey Joe, after NZ, what do you say about a Himilayan trip, maybe in the pipeline for future videos, we'd all be waiting for that one....cheers
There are a few options in the pipeline, it just depends what I can make work, but the Himalaya's would be an epic place to ride.
Do you ever have problems with people when your camping in some isolated areas, Great to watch your videos , keep them going mate
No Bernard, never an issue with other people, but most places I have camped there has been no one else.
How did you miss the Young Australian water wheel on the carrick track!!!
I must have been concentrating on keeping the bike upright on the track as I pasted higher up the ridge and didn't look left down to it at that moment.
I thought that😂
There were so many mine sites on both sides of the track from the bottom of the hill including some vertical shafts so it pays to be careful walking around
Production question - when you're filming the B-roll where you ride past the camera and off into the distance, are you doing that with a drone, and fly it up to you, or going back and fetching the camera :)
Mr brother-in-law's partner comes from the south island and he's done a couple of the tracks you have by 4wd and said how great it was - but nothing in his photos captured the country you've shown so far.
The Nevis Road is great it's a pitty you couldn't do the whole thing.
the north end that I saw was stunning, it just means I'll have to come back and do the hold road next time, I have a long list of places I have missed and need to do next time.
@@freewayproject more videos to come
It must be Friday! What sort of dirt bike needs service every 15 hours? My little Yamaha XT250 only needs to be serviced every 5,000 km.
ready to race, KTM Dirt bikes, mine enduro 250 KTM EXC-F 6 Days says 15 hours in the manual.
@@freewayproject Ah, enduro, that's different. You'd need a support crew for that :)
You have camped in all kinds of grounds, what kind of tent pegs do you use?
They came with the tent (Big Agnes), they are super light and have a right angle V profile.
Mate I did the Nevis on a Classic 500 - you turned around too early....
I turned around because of the rain, but got wet anyway 😂 so you're right. Oh well i'll have to do all the track on the next ride around NZ
Where do you get your music Joe? How can I find these ones?
HI mate, The music comes from one of the online music providers. As the music is on youtube you have to have permission to use it other wise youtube will not play the audio or delete the video. So there are website out there that provide what is called Royalty Free Music which means they have been release for use for a fee. There are several site like Premiumbeats, Artist, Epidemicsounds and more.
@@freewayproject I will check them out. Thanks Joe. 😁 Buddy u r amazing.
Why do they have those gates in the middle of nowhere? People can open and pass through. Animals can't. So probably for animals. But why?
Yes they gate are for animals, the land is private land, not public land but the farmers are kind enough to let people travel through their land as long as you respected it and shut the gates so the animals don't run away.
@@freewayproject lovely
1st Bungy jumping place in the world where it all started. thanks to AJ Hacket... don't know what dirt bike your talking about every 15 hours service ....have you owned a DR 650 or a XR600 they go for 5000k before servicing. Ya talking about motocross bikes.
I should have clarified "Dirt bike" as the word is probably used differently in different areas I was referring to Enduro bike which are basically road legal motocross bikes. I have a 250 KTM EXC-F, light, awesome bike, eats up technical trails but as mention needs a lot of pampering.
Don't you encounter wild animals at night camping in such places? Bears, boars, deers?
New Zealand has no dangerous animals at all, no snakes, no bears etc...
please change your narration style
Show me your narration style so I can understand.
@@freewayprojectnah mate, don’t change anything 😎👍
Thanks
Thanks mate, you know it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks you for the support Henry, it is greatly appreciated and will go towards the next journey.
