Gabe you son of a bitch!! Lol nah totally get it man! I honestly do the same exact thing. I barely watch any RUclipsrs these days and definitely not my self-development friends in the space. I find that it narrows your own creative vision and I begin to compare myself to others more often (and that makes me feel crappy). Appreciate all the love and support you've given my videos over the years. Your videos are really great and you've grown so much since I've seen them last! Keep up the good work!

So I’m 64 and have been a minimalist before it became popular. I follow numerous minimalist channels and garner things from each. More along what we have common and enjoy the diversity of each person’s journey. I can see where you’re take away could cloud your perspective. However being yourself is also a compilation of learned from life and other mentors. Keep doing your thing your way. Enjoy it

Massively relate to many of the points here. Throughout the pandemic I stepped away from most social media (mainly as comparison to a highlight reel was making me feel rubbish), but I was surprised to find that without the noise of influence I've started to find my own voice, my own thoughts and opinions and felt less of a need to achieve certain things because 'everyone else has that'.

I don`t think " orginality" is so important. You can watch 1000 different chefs make omelette. They are all great and make it a little bit different. Non of them invented the omelette. Who cares who invented coca cola. The inventor sold it for nothing and even dident see the value in his own creation. What matters is that you like doing the things you do. I watch your videos not because you invented minimalism. I watch them because i like watching how you interpret " minimalism". If it`s 1% different from how i live it. It`s that 1% im interested in. Even if you copy Mats style, your copy is just a copy of how he copyd Fumio Sasaki. And Fumio made a copy of Konmari, and she learnd it from working in a shinto shrine. Orginality is so overrated. Just remember to give people credit when you use their style. Have a great day

This is a great discussion. This is a very human thing that I (and I’m sure many others) also went through. I remember one of my favorite style youtuber (Jenn Im) told me that she started out her fashion journey copying exactly all of her favorite outfits from the people she looked up to. And through time, she picked out her favorite parts of each outfit and slowly developed her own sense of style and now her own brand. So I think its great that you are so self-aware of where your position is in your creative journey!

A friend of mine sent me this and I love it. I love. Everything about this video. I have stopped watching a lot of the bigger guys too. I stopped watching Matt because I didn’t like the 30-day challenges. Moral of the story. Be yourself. Love it man. Can’t wait to see you grow to the point you become unrelatable as well. Lol.

Thanks, Gabe, for your honest thoughts on this. I have been watching a lot of art journaling (and minimalist/declutter/productivity) RUclips videos and recently came to the same conclusion as you: What is my art style? What level of stuff contributes to my comfort? What exactly are my true goals and helpful routines? There is a thin line between learning from someone and copying someone. Too much outside influence and input can certainly hamper our own authenticity. Time to break away and make our own path.

Going through this same dilemma at my current job. I realized I had lost my voice months ago, and I was just regurgitating my supervisor’s way of doing things, which isn’t my style at all. So I took a chance on myself and put in a resignation letter...I have never felt more like myself

You're a rare one. I- literally- just watched a video from a more well known content creator (interior design) that made a video which promoted ideas as being his own that a less well known creator had done a month prior. She got no credit. I discovered her video after watching his. I also caught another creator (of an entirely different topic) in an act of overt plagiarism (word for word of an older article I found because the topic of the video interested me) that they never sourced either. Most of us understand unintentional similarities in videos- but your level of introspection is a good thing. Hope you have a blessed year.

Hey Gabe, just found your channel and love it. Have you ever read the book Steal Like an Artist? I think you may like it. There are two forms of art they say, that worth copying or not. I think Matt is someone we all appreciate, his editing/production is amazing, but it is hard to emulate. Except if you are trying it for your own videos, it's still in your way and naturally differs.

Good recommendation. 💯 you should, Gabe. The gist of the book is that originality is a facade. The best artists are a product of the art and people they’ve been exposed to. We are all standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before. And it’s okay to be comfortable doing so.

It's probably true that most ideas and creative works are derivative to some degree because we all learn from others. But we can't be content with just copying what others do or think, otherwise we stop growing . Life is definitely a journey and there's nothing wrong with following the paths of those who come before us, but at some point we have to start making footprints of our own. Thanks for being willing to share your journey with us Gabe!

This reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell's quote: "Once you've written something, it no longer belongs to you. It belongs to your readers. When your readers buy your book, they really buy your ideas and your ideas become theirs."
It becomes tricky when we create content in the same genre and space as our inspiration.

I do think this is very relatable, even for people who aren't content creators. I love indulging in self improvement podcasts and inspirational minimalist videos, I want to be productive and I want to learn something almost every minute of my day. Although the last months I've been taking walks WITHOUT listening to podcasts or music and I've been eating my lunch without watching RUclips-videos. I think it has created som space for my own thoughts, it's easy to forget that you have to make some room for yourself sometimes.
I really enjoyed this video. I'm too very inspired by Matt, and I get that it's ultimately not about him, but you made a lot of great points. Now I'll turn my phone off and take a walk hahahah. Thank you!

Its truly awsome for someone such as yourself who has been on a journey for a long time, to stand up and to have found their own standing ground to declare how u wanna be different than others coz u r right, I mean why???? Why can't we all just do be ourselves and enjoy putting out there what we enjoy rather than following the trend of others??. I have been following your vlogs for a little while and truly I enjoy them very much but am now looking forward to more contextualized and authentic contents created directly from your own research and so on.
