About two years ago I found myself $35,000 in debt, majority credit cards. We were days away from filing bankruptcy when I just had this really strong feeling to push through it and intensely commit myself to paying it off. I cut all of our expenses to the bare bones minimum. Our last payment is in about 10 days. We paid off $35,000 in about 18 ish months. This video came at a perfect time for me, Matt! I'm 22 and just graduated this year and am looking at 100k in debt. Just had to make the tough decision to live with my parents while all of my friends move out into their own places. I landed a full-time job that pays 30k with guaranteed promotion to 60k+ after 6-12 months in the role. This video helped me realize that it's okay to live at home and to cut costs, and I could not be more thankful. I want to celebrate my first win by moving out once I land that promotion, whether that be in February or August of next year. You also inspired me to use my art skills to start my own company on the side, so excited!
I have been following you for a couple of years now, and I appreciated all the advice and teaching you have given to your audience. Love the “chunking” method. Glad to have a name for the way I have been attacking h debt. Feels a lot more tangible when putting a sizable number towards debt rather than a small amount each month.
This is really inspiring as someone who has been struggling with debt since I was 18 (I'm now 28) I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now but it's been a long road
I really appreciated this perspective from someone else!! being in your twenties, you consistently see others your age quickly increasing their lifestyles (or expenses) when their incomes aren’t matching that inflation. I’m glad I’ve personally stayed strong, making similar choices to you, to pay off my debt rapidly while still being able to lead a happy life.
Good for you! It's so hard not to get sucked into 'keeping up with the joneses' when you're in your 20's, but its SO worth it when you're able to become debt free and start on some bigger life goals!
@@howtoadultschool I agree completely!! And I luckily do have a few good friends/boyfriend who feel the same way, so I have a smaller bubble of support which helps!

Thanks for sharing this! I’m currently $23K in debt, and starting to document my journey. I’ve realized mindset is so important. Having the courage to tackle the debt and openly talk to my partner, family, and close friends has been a game changer. Anyone else out there struggling? Remember, we’re not alone
I unknowingly was doing the chunking method myself! It feels way more satisfying to see the balance significantly drop. I'm sure some people har disagree, but there's also the psychology of the fact tat money isn't going to loans when you are moving it around. It does provide a cushion, and when the cushion gets big enough, you can chunk it into a debt payment.
private college exists even in other countries but it never gets this expensive . something is wrong with the american education system for it to cost so much

I don't have any college debt because I'm from Argentina and we have public/free education here, but this is a great video for anyone to watch. I'm trying to save money and there is amazing content here, as always ✨
I have about £21,000 worth of debt from going to a university in England (pre-fees hike). The interest rate is so low the accepted way to deal with it is to pay the minimum, which is a percentage of your monthly wage, and let it cancel off after 30 years. Costs me about £80 per month.
Thank you, Matt. Really. It's kind of cheesy if I say that I've been looking up to you since 2019, when I decided to get serious in trying out Minimalism. You're an inspiration to many, man. But it's funny that the dislikes of this video also is 117. Super great video againnn. Stay safe, you guys in AU! ❤️ from the Philippines.
Excellent video Matt! That is a lot you paid off in a short time! I started a business last week and my first step is more apprenticeship. The right people in my life make a huge difference!
And then there's me, in Portugal, were like in all europe, every school expenses are paid by the gouvernment because thats why taxes are needed, not to pay billions to send soldiers to midle east
Well done Matt ..as a student no one should have that amount of debt it has gone crazy and adds to the stress. In creative roles we need to be as stress free as possible so makes no sense that the fees are this high
I'm not based in the US, and I can't imagine how stressful living with such debt would be... I think that the debt-free culture and free health care system are such a wonderful thing of living in Europe. Of course there are some things the US are so much better at. I would love to live in some US states, after all.
I live in Canada (province of Québec) and it's similar to Europe. Living in the States seems so stressful! A wonderful country to visit, but to live..no way.
For me my biggest spender was collecting comics and Funko’s so now I say to myself I can only purchase each twice a year and got a 100-50 spending budget for each depending on how I am at the time. Definitely saving a lot of money instead of buying at random on a whim 😂
"Chunking" is what my wife and I do as well. Now that we don't have any more debt we do it more to invest. We let our savings get to a certain threshold and then say "we don't need that much money in a crappy low interest bank account, so what should we do with it?". And we also always have an Investing Plan so we typically just use that accrued money to invest toward that plan. Sometimes that changes though to buy an investment property vs Vanguard. But the trick is to have the plan for that money, then you have to justify why to not follow the plan and do something else with it. If you don't have that logic, then it's too easy to spend it on a home renovation or boat or something else that's more so instant gratification and not long term gain.
Thanks Matt, helpful information, it just shows how consistent hard work really compounds over time. You did pay off your loan over time and not over night and that’s a big difference to what most young people think about an overnight success.
I absolutely love Matt as a creator. This video is exactly what I need. Every single point is so easy to understand yet feels so insightful and helpful. Thank you sooooo much Matt.
I think in Australian, at least in Sydney, its very very common for people live with their family during university. probably because of how expensive it is to rent in this city. can anybody else relate, or am I wrong?
A year ago, I started hating Matt because I couldn't relate to anything and it was about productivity and success all the time. But I gradually started working on my career, I build an amazing social presence, worked with quality clients, and now I get all sorts of opportunities. I did not have a student loan but I'd a family loan which I'm almost going to pay back InshaAllah. I'm doing most of the things Matt mentioned, even tracking my finances... So whoever is reading this, I'd only say this: Start developing your skills, provide honest work and work hard as much as you can. Once you'll make some money as a freelancer, you'll get better. 🖤
Recap: 1. Spend less. Make more money 2. Start your own business (eg. freelance filmmaker), need not be a RUclipsr and have audience and sell courses 3. Increase your earnings by selling your product in an exponential rate and have a good justification and deliver your work at the highest quality 4. Track your progress

Wow, this is one of your more underrated videos. The title kept me from clicking for a while because I was like “hasn’t he told this story like 3x already?”
But the middle section about your entrepreneurial journey is really valuable. Great advice!

2.Focus on making more money 12:53
3. State commited to your vision (trace ur progress) 16:02
I have been following you for a couple of years now, and I appreciated all the advice and teaching you have given to your audience. Keep up the good work.I can say you have completely changed my life from your productivity, minimalism, and many more videos that really help and changed many things in my life at my lowest point. So again thank you. You are making a difference in people lives.
This video is a great reminder that all storms come not to stay... But only to pass. Life will always have its highs and lows. Just don't forget to enjoy the journey! Awesome video.
Love the “chunking” method. Glad to have a name for the way I have been attacking h debt. Feels a lot more tangible when putting a sizable number towards debt rather than a small amount each month.
These videos on finance are always posted exactly when I need them. Thanks man 🙏🏻
I always wondered how your videos always looked so clean. That’s a perspective I’ve strived to acquire.
Now this is a good, practical, honest look at a successful path.
This is really inspiring as someone who has been struggling with debt since I was 18 (I'm now 28) I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now but it's been a long road
1. Intentionally cut back on spending
2. Focus on making more money
3. Organize your finances
I LOVE this more sit-down-and-talk-style, Matt!
I always find the concept of Student Loans interesting because it’s just not a thing in my country.
There are a ton of credit facility fintechs rising up here too and loans and credits will be a thing in the near future here
Yeah, it would be so weird having those in Nigeria
for that to be a thing, I think our judicial system needs to feel more impactful
Love the progress over time! Went from "I spent 18k on a new car" to "I made 30k on one project"
Thanks a lot Matt! Your way of presenting things makes things appear manageable and achievable. Its always good to see a person who gives real advice with their own experiences.

Thanks for sharing this! I’m currently $23K in debt, and starting to document my journey. I’ve realized mindset is so important. Having the courage to tackle the debt and openly talk to my partner, family, and close friends has been a game changer. Anyone else out there struggling? Remember, we’re not alone
it's a real privilege to live at your parents rent free after university. I don't know if this is a realistic plan for most people to save money...
you can also get roommates. i’d suggest a larger group (3 or 4 people) cheaper all around and there’s always groups on facebook looking to do so
I unknowingly was doing the chunking method myself! It feels way more satisfying to see the balance significantly drop. I'm sure some people har disagree, but there's also the psychology of the fact tat money isn't going to loans when you are moving it around. It does provide a cushion, and when the cushion gets big enough, you can chunk it into a debt payment.
private college exists even in other countries but it never gets this expensive . something is wrong with the american education system for it to cost so much
Yes brother... it's crazy how someone has to pay 100K for a 4 year education, makes no sense...in Europe youcan find great colleges with 10 times less expenses or even less.
What an absolute chad
i am
Bruh it's you again
Damn you really do be everywhere
Matt has made more money talking about his debt on this youtube channel than the amount of debt itself.
Love this. I started a real estate photo and video company in 2020 after another business completely failed.
In 2020 I made $40k in revenue and in 2021 I made just under $60k.
Hoping to 1.5x this year and finally be able to start paying off debt.
I appreciate your videos man! Take care.
living rent free with your parents was a big part of getting out of debt
Tks, Matt. You not only share facts on your channel, but also your story, your mistakes and how you became a minimalist. It makes more sense when we see the facts from a real story. Congrats!

I can’t stop thinking about the irony and insanity of Elon Musk becoming the richest person in the world why they individual who has spent $20billon.
Prince of Brunei’s spent it all maybe he would have been among the rich if he invested his money
Another interesting presentation…. Elon Musk technological development is mind-blowing…
His investment in Bitcoin because he is aware of the profit he would make

This is great advice. I had to live with my 'rents working a shitty job until I save enough to get my own apartment and eventually purchase my condo. Not even close to paying off my debt but on the way. Keep doing your thing. Very inspiring.
I started filming YT this year and I still live with my parents. His mom shutting back of his video is such a mood because my mom does the same when I film lol
I've literally been binging your videos for the past two hours and then this pops up, what a great surprise!
You must had beencraazy bored brother 😆 but yeah, that would be nice if it happened to me
Omg this should have been one of your first videos. I'm been waiting for this.
"What are the things making money disappear from your account?"
Bills, Matt. Just bills.
I graduated college 1 year and 3 months ago with $48,000 in debt. I made the obvious decision to live with my parents so could aggressively pay off my student loans. Today I have about 28k in student loans. In 1 year and 3 months I paid off $21,000. And I’m still going!
This video is the equivalent of “tell me you went to college in America without telling me you went to college in America”. Why do they allow you to take on SO much debt at SUCH a young age! It’s wild!
But good on you for prioritizing your personal finances.
Capitalism keeps you in debt and in the working class.
@@radrose8673 private college exists even in other countries but it never gets this expensive . something is wrong with the american education system for it to cost so much

Thanks for sharing! Interesting hearing basically the exact story from your perspective. Graduated college, financed a car, and decided "What am I doing?" Glad to say, I paid off all of my debt two weeks ago about 3 years out of college and it feels awesome! Really enjoy your content, keep up the great work!
Problem with debt is how cheap it is to get it. And paradoxically very rich people take lots of debt because it ends up being cheapest way to fund something
Not only did you offer sound financial advice but also great advice for growing your own business! Thanks for another stellar video! ✌🏻

Funny how moving in with parents is a "sacrifice", especially straight out of school.
yeah it's like, the opposite of that. that's a huge privilege. generous on his parents part.
Depends on the relationship between both people. I love my mom but as I got older and experienced living away from her in my own space, moving back in is a sacrifice. The relationship is better when we’re not living under the same roof so it’s definitely a sacrifice IMO.
@@ajh.4131 That is fair. I get that it wouldn't be something you would want to do and it is a compromise of independence. I guess the word sacrifice just seemed off.
@@ajh.4131 It's a personal sacrifice to you, but an overall privilege that you even had the opportunity. The life you had to deal with was the sacrifice but the OPPORTUNITY is what is privileged about it. But I get you! :)
Could you talk more about your freelance business?
Especially the start, your first clients, were you cold calling people? Networking? Posting ads online?
117K to became a filmmaker on paper and landing on youtube anyway? USA is a joke. I became a lawyer in Hungary (with a doctorate ) for less than 5K and i got a FULL medical coverage for 25 bucks a month. My post-socialist, illiberal little country seems not too bad after all
Matt! I've been loving your channel for ages but you just merged so many of my own interests and what I teach my (language) students! "Chunking" is the way to do things, for sure. Thanks for the fresh air your channel and your message and delivery bring to the online spaces we occupy.
Matt actually did it on purpose. He foresaw that he would be able to monetise his debt on RUclips!
my headache woke me up, but hey i caught a matt d’avella upload in the first few mins.
Why do Americans come back to their parents’ BASEMENT? Like, you had a room in their house, where did it go?
fitness room
The parents transform their old room into an office or something lol
That's a good question I've never thought of (I'm not from the US either haha)
Most likely so he would have more privacy than he did in high school. Most US homes have finished basements and they are as comfortable as a second living room
in North America, basements are like an apartment. It's finished and confortable.
So much compassion for your viewers. Super detailed and valuable content. Great video Matt !! Thank you !
Imagine how much faster we all could pay off our debt if our federally backed student loans had interest rates lower than the average mortgage. My average % interest on my student loans is 6.5%. Ugggggggggghhhhh.
EXACTLY
My used car loan has a lower interest rate than my federal student loans. Why are they making so much money on the backs of US students?
I am not a business owner, am an RN, but I appreciated this video a lot and the notes I took will help me along my debt-free journey. My wife and I took Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and it felt like we were willingly signing up for jail 😂. Your mindset seems more in tune with our mindset. Thanks!
Graham should see this!!
Especially the latte part 😂😂

The title should be:
“How bad the U.S. educational system is in 21 minutes”
It's sad. Crearly they're taking advantage of rich americans
It's not sad, it's shocking. They had such an outdated system. They don't even use PayPass...
I graduated with $10k in student loans and an engineering degree. I now make $85k. Not a bad deal.

I don't have any college debt because I'm from Argentina and we have public/free education here, but this is a great video for anyone to watch. I'm trying to save money and there is amazing content here, as always ✨
AS A BROKE COLLEGE STUDENT, PAYING FOR MY TUITION FEE, I NEEEEED THIS!
i love the chunking idea!!! that definitely sounds so much more doable for me thank you for sharing
I needed this. Thankful for all of your content. Was just checking off some of the last lessons on Master RUclips this morning.
I have about £21,000 worth of debt from going to a university in England (pre-fees hike). The interest rate is so low the accepted way to deal with it is to pay the minimum, which is a percentage of your monthly wage, and let it cancel off after 30 years. Costs me about £80 per month.
Most debt don't grow to where it is overnight. Likewise, paying it off won't happen overnight but keep at it and don't stop!
Your cinematography is stunning and all of your videos are incredibly insightful
And then there's me, in Portugal, were like in all europe, every school expenses are paid by the gouvernment because thats why taxes are needed, not to pay billions to send soldiers to midle east
true
Humour is something I thought USA has lost… forever. But damn, Matt’s humour could save the whole country’s image
Rice and beans, beans and rice.
Speaking of curating your feeds, Matt, thank you for always creating such nurturing and beneficial content :) you do great work.
I think in Australian, at least in Sydney, its very very common for people live with their family during university. probably because of how expensive it is to rent in this city. can anybody else relate, or am I wrong?
In Buenos Aires is the same (except with smaller numbers, probably)
It's common in the expensive cities here in Canada (Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, etc.)
30 years?! to pay student loans from college? whoa!
