I want to see a clash of Titans review between the FX-19 and MR/DR920. What if I say please?
J frames are awesome!
Great content yet again!!
640 or T605 much better choices if .357 is wanted other than maybe dedicated jogging gun. W 340pd I'd carry 3 110 critical defense .38 standard pressure than 2 .357 125 gr critical defense. I usually don't like critical defense but right choices for this lightweight short barrel. I've got review of great speedloader type strip thing that would fit this and various revolver reviews and subjects on my channel. Edit...110 standard pressure .38 should be ok just not plus p or magnum stuff under 120 grains??? I guess short barrel gold dots would be good choice too
I've got a 637& a 638 and am looking a 357 in that size so it wood have ammo compatibility with my 586 357, cause with the ammo situation being what it is I don't want to worry about having ammo for one gun and not the other.
I’ve owned the exact same no-lock gun for a few years and keep it stoked w/+P due to the ability to make quick & accurate follow up shots. My 340PD, that I paid around $900, is my EDC. My trigger has become smoother w/range time but still measures in excess of 12 lbs. As an aside, shooting magnum rounds out of the 340PD is like catching a 95 MPH fastball w/o a glove.
That is the most accurate and forewarning description I’ve heard about the recoil.
Ive heard they cant handle a ton of rounds. Have you experienced that? It sounds like you have put some good rounds through it
I’m just shooting standard pressure and +P thirty-eight b/c the magnum rounds are too difficult to handle, at least for this 77 y/o retiree.
@@oldcop18 nice, thanks for the reply man. I decided to go with the Ruger Lcr 38 due to price. 38 +p is about all I want to shoot too. Im 37 but I have arthritis/ gout so I gotta take it easy when I shoot
@@willl4219Understood, stay safe.
I own and love this gun. The S&W PD series is great. ... I keep .38 +P in the 340PD. If you continue to shoot .357 in gun that weighs less than a can of beer, your hands will fall off.
But, correct me if I'm wrong, that firearm (like all j-frame revolvers chambered in .357 mag) isn't made to fire industrial quantities of .357 rounds each year. Full-power .357 ammo shoots well, albeit violently, but it's just not for everyday use in a gun like the 340PD. They're best saved when going hiking or hunting.
@shikat2371 sure it wont hold up the same as an L frame but youd be surprised what these guns can handle...prob more than your hand 😂
Thanks very much for doing this video. Much appreciated. I carried steel frame J Frames as backups for many years running +P ammunition and they ran just fine. I'm currently using a Ruger LCR 327 Federal Magnum revolver with 130 grain Buffalo Bore ammo as it's easier for me to shoot than the hotter .357 loads now that I'm a older. Hard to beat a good J Frame for a rock solid carry option. Thank you very much. Greg
Great Pocket Rocket!!!
I carried one for years, if you get to your secondary firearm this one right here is a true hell raiser (5) shots and the external ballistics are premium!
I’ve got one and the brother version, the Model 360 with the FDE grips. I bought a titanium cylinder from midway USA for around 120 last summer and tossed it into the 360 so they are a matching pair.
My wife loves the 360 because of the single action option, she’s not scared of the recoil at all. I’ve got high speed film of her shooting full house mag loads and you can literally see the shockwave run from her hand through her entire body. Such beautiful little pieces of extreme firepower
Two of my sons, went in to class, for their concealed handgun license. While, on the first day, I, while waiting, two hours, decided to rent a booth, and practice shoot my S&W 340ct. I had 50 rounds of .357 hollow point. Went thru every round, in 2 hours. Driven. The " tethered " flap of skin, and deep red hole, below my thumb, was gone, within three weeks. Still on of my favorites.
You shooting at the end...
tells me I don't gotta worry about recoil.
Excellent. Thanks bro!
Man keep the j frame and revolver videos coming! Nice relaxing content as always!
Had one exactly like the one pictured on the link. Awesome gun. Super snappy. None of my buddies could ever shoot 25 rounds of full power 357 mag. Took off the rubber grils and used small wood grips. Shirt wood ride up on the rubber ones. Awesome gun. Carried the beast everywhere
15 November 2022 - consider using a pocket holster. DeSantis has one outstanding pocket holster which is the Super Fly® which I use for everyday carry of my 340.
I have one of these I gave it to my father this year for Christmas excellent carry pistol. And the way the laws are going it may be the most practical thing to own. Gotta love a wheel gun. I have the SC model.
I just picked up a 360.. it's not pleasent to shoot.. like at all! I love it!
I really like my 340PD and have had it for a good number of years. Not only is it easy to use without thinking, but I can hit what I shoot at with ether hand (38+P). But the best thing of all is I do carry it and at the end of the day I have almost forgotten I have it.
Mrgunsngear making wheel guns cool again!!!! I still carry an air weight 38spc every now and then. It's so simple to drop it in your pocket and walk out the door when you dont want to carry iwb... This is a pretty cool gun that I would love to add to the collection.
Beautiful gun & great video... I have an M&P 340 that I carry every where, love the J frame
These little revolvers are extremely underrated.
Typically in a defensive situation, the presentation of a firearm is all that is nessesary to defuse a potential lethal force situation. "Most" bad guys don't want to get shot. They are looking for an easy opportunity "victim".
This little revolver disappears in your pocket, waistband, or even around your ankle.
I have carried a 5 shot S&W 360pd in a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster in my right front pocket for the last 6 years. It doesn't even interfere with my Benchmade Bugout. I carry with the Hornady 158gr 38 spl +p Critical defense. It doesn't throw flames and its not punishing to shoot. I carry 1 speed strip with a Neo-Mag RASC clipped to my left pocket right next to my Streamlight Protac 1AAA (awesome edc light). This provides a light weight reload and it gives me the ability to top off the gun in the event (God forbid) I would have to use the revolver.
For me, this little pistol is a fight your way out of danger and to a safer place gun. If I am at my property, thats getting to 1 of my two safes. Lots of options.
If I am out, it's to get to my vehicle. In my vehicle I keep what I call an "inconvenience bag". Others may call it a "Get Home Bag". I have found that the 5.11 Covert 18 works the best. In it, I keep the 5 C's. 1) Cover (USGI Poncho), 2) Cutting tool (ESEE 4), 3) Container (Stainless Steel water bottle with nesting cup), 4) combustion device (Firesteel and a lighter), and 5) cordage (25 feet of paracord which with the 7 inner strands + the outer casing = 200 feet of overall cordage). 1 change of under garments, travel hygeine, 1 MRE, a 20,000 mah power bank, extra AAA batteries for flashlight, and a Glock 19 MOS with a Holosun 507 in a Crossfire "The EDC holster" that fits over 50 different models of pistols, and 4 magazines, in universal pitbull mag pouches. A lvl III armor plate, a medical bleed out trauma kit, and a general boo boo kit.
If I can break contact, retreat, and make it to my vehicle, I can either leave, address wounds (mine or others), or if need be I can fight harder.
For everyday on person carry though, I love the lite lil' snubby.
I forgot to add, due to a revolvers construction and function, you can press the muzzle into an attacker and press the trigger multiple times with out causing a malfunction.
With defensive shooting happening in very close proximity (typically within arms reach distance) this is a very useful trait.
A semi-auto, due to its design, if pressed into an attacker will more than likely force it's slide out of battery, rendering the pistol useless until pressure is release and the slide is allowed back into battery. And if the trigger is pressed, a malfunction clearance is usually nessesary to reset the sear.
This is one major advantage to a revolver over a semi-auto.
You take things way too serious...
@@MechInvent
Or maybe you don't take things seriously enough?🤔
Or maybe you should just keep your comments to yourself. I think that would be better.
My wife went with the 442 and she is super happy with it. I put some FDE g10 grips, epoxy painted the front sight high vis yellow, and added the Apex spring kit and she loves it.
15 November 2022 - the Apex spring kit is an excellent choice for J-Frame revolvers.
And just like that...I feel the need for another revolver. Great review Mike! Thanks!
lol yup just bought a Rossi 357.
I hate his reviews or my wallet does I should say. He makes me want to run out and buy everything he shows lol.
@@johnmaresca69 No doubt!
I was just telling my wife the other day that my collection was reaching a point where I don’t feel like I need much more. I was wrong...
Might wanna try before you buy...just sayin’
I've owned one for many years....pleasure to carry. I had it ported and added an Ergo Delta grip. Makes it tolerable with magnum loads.
Like I said on TFB I had one few months sold it. Took a huge beating $250 loss. Impulse buy. It was a gun i regretted selling never even fired it. Few months ago found a 340 M&P similar weapon maybe just 2 ounces heavier not quite as expensive but close. I bought it and restored the balance! I carry it pretty frequently no plans on ditching it.
I have a m&p 340 w/o the lock. It shoots good. I love it for a carry gun. I can carry all day and forget it's in my pocket.
Really love this dude and his delivery. Well played my friend!
I'm partial to the 360PD! Same thing but with an exposed hammer. The 329 is a pleasure to shoot as well, being a .44 mag and all.
Thank you! This was very informative. I have owned my 340PD for well over 8 years now. It’s a great EDC Pistol. Cheers
I had a 340PD in .357. Excellent revolver once you master the heavy trigger. You could literally forget it was on you and that was IWB.
I barely notice my 17 when I carry it AIWB.
@@MrMalicious5Your body must be portioned very differently than mine. I can't appendix carry my G19, forget about a 17. And I'm a slim guy. I bought a P365 for that which works out much better.
@@andygrew4832 I’m 5’10 160lbs. The trick is raise your pants a little higher and the gun won’t jam you in the thigh when you sit. I don’t wear baggy clothes either and I barely print.
The heavy trigger is safer to carry. I like the heavy trigger because I can stage the trigger. There's a definite click just before the hammer falls and you can stop at that point, take aim and the trigger pull from there is as light as you need for accuracy.
Why spend the money on an airweight magnum when you can just smash your hand in a car door for free
Hillarious! 😆
I carry a 640 and that's already pretty terrible with magnums.
It is light enough you forget it is in your pocket, and I choose to carry .38 +p just because it is more manageable.
And that is the type of Revolver that ALL Revolver Fudds and Revolver biased fan boys will tell every first time lady gun buyer to buy.
@@SCH292 The 340PD? Nooooo. I'd advise, for example, my cousin Joyce, who is in her early seventies and a little frail (Can't rack a slide.) to get something like a Smith & Wesson Model 60, 2⅛" barrel or a Ruger SP 101, 2¼" barrel and carry .38 Special +P in it.
She wants something simple and a semi-auto pistol is too complex for her, both in operation and in cleaning.
I have carried the SW 642 Airweight with .38+p in an ankle holster. This is my work backup. Early in my career, we all wanted to buy a ‘cool’ backup, but none of us really understood what was needed in a situation when you actually need a backup.
This gun is so light you can forget you are wearing it. With all the other equipment we carry, weight reduction is a MUST for a back up. Carrying on your ankle is also a plus because one of the most common places you will be is on the ground when you need your back up. Finally, this revolver is a backup weapon that will not fail when it is dirty or held improperly. There are no safety switches or hammers to get caught on clothing, malfunction, or forget about when it comes time to shoot. When the barrel of a revolver is shoved into the body of your enemy during a struggle, there is no chance of misfire, stove-pipe, or failure to feed.
This is not a gun for accuracy or your primary daily carry, in my opinion. However, as a backup, this gun is a lifesaver!
For me an ankle holster is a problem not because of weight but rather because the gun gets filthy and as it moves around so much as you're walking it wears the finish off of the gun. I can see where you would need to wear one since you're evidently in law enforcement.
15 November 2022 - you are right! Three of my J-frames are DAO because in a self-defense situation I would not need a hammer to cock. The Apex "Duty/Carry J-Frame Spring Kit" eases the trigger pull by around three pounds. My three J-frames are Mag-Na-Ported as well.
Glad to see your still around making these great videos
I have a very similar version of this model, but mine came from the factory with the big dot from sight installed with a large U rear notch in the frame. I love this gun and it is a handful with 357 loads. Too much really unless you are carrying it in the woods for protection from critters. Shooting 38 +P ammo in it is not bad at all.. If you want to step up from normal 38 +P, but not go to full 357, try one of the hot 38+P loads from Underwood. I have tried their 38 Special +P 158 Grain Lead Semi-Wadcutter Hollow Point Gas Check load, and it is a very hot 38. Underwood claims a Muzzle Velocity of 1160 fps, and Muzzle Energy of 472 ft lbs. From a 2" barrel it is probably hitting 975 fps, which is as much as I want with a 158 grain bullet. The bullet also has what Underwood calls a "Hi-Tek Coating", so it is not going to foul as much as a plain lead bullet would. This ammo shot very clean and accurate from both my 2" J Frame as well as from a 3" K Frame.
Have had one for 15 years. It is a handy one to have.👍
My everyday carry gun. And worth every dime of what it costs.
It is my deer and hog hunting carry gun. I have it on me anytime I am hunting in case need to do business at VERY close range. Also works well when eating breakfast at a truck stop when headed hunting or a bar when done hunting. Lol.
The 340PD is my summer pocket gun or used for a back up carry if needed. I purchased it with the S&W, Crimson Trace grip which is nice to have if things go sideways. I fired five 357 & five 38 +P rounds when I purchase it and have no interest in shooting it again unless a bad guy is down range. I only use Hornady critical duty, 135 gr. Flexlock, which I’m sure will do the job.
I use my 340 with a clip for my workout gun. Its so light you forget its there. Went running through the woods and had some coyotes following me. This was great to have with me. I typically run 5-6 miles and I don't even notice its there. Great review!
What type of clip?
@@ryanjordan7268 paperclip
I have a Smith 329PD which is titanium and chambered in .44 mag. It kicks the crap out of me. It's a beautiful gun; I swapped out the hardwoods it came installed with (which are beautiful) for the rubber grip just because the wood hurt to shoot it with lol
I have the 340CT with i love that revolver, its my pocket/ backup gun. Great review.
I've had one since it came out. Tried 357's, wasn't easy for fast follow up shots.
Carried Corbon DPX 38 Spl. 110 gr. +P for years, until Buffalo Bore started loading the same bullet
in a Standard Pressure load. Expensive gun & expensive ammo.
For me, it's worth it. I also have an electroless nickel 442, a nickel 49, a 351C and what I think is the best J Frame ever made.
The 640 in 38 Spl. The 640 is the one I'd pick if I could only have one.
Spurless Ruger sp101..been the daily for years. 2.25" 357 and a decent weight in your hand. Cool to see the 340pd and your opinion on it.
Perfect timing Mike! Just got my first 642 last week.
S&W's 'scandium' frames ARE aluminium but with the scandium element mixed into it. It does make the alloy stronger so (as normal) can be done lighter due to using less of it.
One good thing or reason to have a light gun, running. If you run outdoors, carrying a very light gun is advantageous. The G43 or Sig P365 may be good for this also.
Carried one as back up and off duty when I was in LE. Really liked it. The 357 mag rounds kick. Took it out when I bought it new and shot @ 50 rounds. The hand was sore the next day. Went and put a two and a half finger grip on it.
It’s a horror to shoot. Takes dedication to shoot accurately. I have one. Love it. Dont know why. Hurts like a bitch.
My 442 is the same
This cannot be understated. With full 357 magnum its like swinging an aluminum baseball bat at a concrete wall. It's exactly what it feels like.
That said, it weights damn near nothing and recoil is fine with 38 +P
In a self defense situation your not going to notice the pain in your hand
@@Al_capachino same and it’s only .38 lol
I’m curious if recoil is a tiny bit better with light bullets like 125 grain 357 vs 158. Also if j frame light trigger springs help with the pull.
I have a 442 .38spl+P Airweight, and it was my primary EDC for many years. I carry a G42 with Hornady XTP now- much easier to shoot accurately and quickly.
Love the 42
Solid review as always Mike.
I used to have a 360pd and I would warn people when shooting .357 “the first round will catch you off guard so hold on, but after the initial shock just finish the other 4 rounds and you’ll love it”
Pinned comment; see info below 🇺🇸
Love your videos. You cover a lot in a short time. Some people like to hear themselves talk and load their videos with filler. No nonsense here. Kudos!
got a 432PD which is an airweight 32H&R mag they only made for a couple years in the mid 2000's
it's alright.
I'm not much of a revolver fan but it makes a nice pocket gun for the summer.
The metal thingy above the barrel in front of the cylinder is to prevent flame cutting the top strap....
Love mine! 125 rds in 1 range session with full house 125gr. I must say could not feel my strong side thumb for 3 day's.
I’ve watched enough of his videos..... and have seen him even positively comment on others videos. New subscriber and new fan. Ty.
indeed 🇺🇸
I absolutely love 357 loads in my K6S and extremely accurate. But yeah it hurts.
I have the 340 M&P, Love it.
I've been wanting a little snubby revolver. Maybe I'll pick one up when gun stores finally have stock again
Great video, I carry a 340PD in a horsehide pocket holster as my daily EDC, keep mine loaded with 38+P. Can carry this all day and hardly know it’s there.
Nice video. I have the 360PD version with a hammer. Thanks for sharing!
I have one and with .38 +P it kicks. I have never shot it with .357 Magnum. It's a good "up close & personal" handgun; simple, light, small...but anything past 10 yds...good luck.
I tried shooting the 360pd all 5 full house loads as fast as I could and bruised my palm for about a week. some serious power transfer! also cuts my trigger finger on the trigger guard almost every time I took it out.
Great review as always!!!
I would love that for pocket carry! It’s definitely pricey, especially now if you can even find one! But I’d probably carry the Buffalo Bore 158 grain soft lead HP in 38 Special, it’s still gets like 1050FPS and is totally effective out a snubby. 👍🏻
15 November 2022 - consider the Black Hills Honey Badger cartridges.
Thanks for the great video. I carry the 360SC (same exact gun but with exposed hammer) every day, I like it for the one reason that with .357 Mag you only need 1 or 2 well placed rounds to end any conflict. Verses 9mm (which I carry as well) requiring possibly double the rounds to achieve the same result... Just my 2 cents... Cheers all
Oh on the front sight, check out Trijicon they make a standard white outline tritium that I have on both of my 340s before you spring for the BIG dot it works very good.
I would imagine a Hogue Monogrip for the Centennial J Frame would make that 340PD sweet to shoot. I have a 642 Airweight, 38 Special +P, that I almost sold because it was painfully snappy and limited my range time. Someone recommended the Hogue Monogrip to me which completely encloses the back strap and has some give over the backstrap which made it an absolute joy to shoot.
I put Crimson Trace laser grips on my 340PD and I can shoot if from my waist better than I can aim it with the stock sights. Crimson Trace makes a model of grips made from soft rubber for the 340PD that covers the backstrap completely. I use the old discontinued model of CT grips that are made of hard polymer because they're lighter than the stock grips and they don't hang up in the pocket. They are more unconformable but who in their right mind shoots a 340PD just for fun?
With 38 cal Gold Dot I chrono'd velocity at 1,000 fps in a 2" 642. Seems pretty fast and recoil is light.
That’s a hand cannon for sure. Thanks for another great review. 🇺🇸
I have that exact model. 340PD with red ramp sight and no lock. Thing is absolutely brutal to fire with .357 mags in it.
Just got one of these i love this firearm it's so light
I need to get a revolver. Its been a few years since I had one. Great video and I appreciate the info.
Finally a small lightweight revolver you can run with it in your ankle holster without feeling like you’re training for a triathlon
Thank you
Had a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug 44 spl.
If the roll crimp wasn’t deep enough, 4 doses of recoil would climb the 5th pill far enough out of the brass to hang out the front of the cylinder and stop it from indexing......here, try it, it’s fun to shoot. 🥴
Don’t forget my favorite feature of the enclosed hammer. You can empty all 5 from inside your coat pocket without a hammer or slide getting caught in the lining of the pocket.
Mike, thanks for taking care of the hillary hole thing right out of the gate. I can now continue to watch the rest of the video and maintain interest. this is a serious thing that a lot of folks take for granted or overlook. Hillary holes ... whaddya ya gonna do?
hey great outro.
Lots of info thanks!
I will stick with my Ruger LCR .357. I got it for $400, and I had no problem putting 50 rounds of magnum ammo through it shooting one handed. And I don't have bear paws by any means. The grip is very comfortable.
I put a 342 cylinder in a 642 years ago. It weighs about 12oz. Great back up gun.
Thanks Mike
Thank you for the video.
I have the 340 M&P. It's 2 ounces heavier but is still painful to shoot. It's not bad with +P 38 but . 357 magnum is harsh but I still love it.
There are day's I miss owning my old 340 scandium... then I remember having retrain the flinch out. It would be cool to film the frame under a super high speed camera, as bad as it wacks your hand with full power loads it must have a significant amount of frame whip.
Why didn't you just shoot .38 Special in it? You do know it'll shoot both calibers don't you? One for a man and one for a woman or wimp. ha ha
@@AlaVol66 of course, but who buys a 357 to shoot 38's. It's ok though, I got a boat out of the trade.
I have a 340 with the SS cylinder and I love it as a grab and go backup gun. Its a little heavier than the titanium cylinder but its negligible really. I did replace the grip with a Hogue 3 finger grip that wraps around the backstrap. For some reason the gun digs into a bone in my thumb when I shoot it and it was just way to painful but the new grip I can fire 38 like its .22 and full power .357 hurts but nowhere near like it did with the stock grip.
get one of those screw-on clips and i can carry it in my gym shorts when i walk the dog or take a short trip to the store and feel like Im covered fine.
This is my dream j frame.
Great content. Thanks
Love my S&W340ct, and I love my S&W500mag.Yeaaaah!
I've had one for years and refer to it as the 'oh shit' gun. Many friends and family who have fired it, usually remark 'oh shit' after one .357 round. It's always fun to see the look on their faces.
very veyr informative
Need this sooo bad perfect backup to my shield plus
AHHHHHH The Devils handshake !!! I love mine and keep it loaded with 145g 357 Magnum rounds 😈😈😈😈
I carry my 340 in my pocket. A big advantage of a revolver is that they don't print like a pistol does, because the topography of the cylinder makes for a irregular shape.
I'm a newish sub, but these are the best reviews on the tube! 👊
Love mine. Has night sights and ct laser grip. Stout and loud.
Videos of the highest of quality.
Love the hoodie will be getting one 🇺🇸
Once upon a time a had one of these. So comfortable to carry but kicked like a mule, even with standard pressure 38's.
I would load 4 38's, and the last round would be a 357 mag.
Sadly I had to sell it. I'd love to replace it but they are so expensive.
Thank you.
Just a thought!
If a person shoots the 340PD for practice, use 38 special or wear a glove with cushioned pads in the palm. Like the host said, if your in an emergency you won't notice the impact on your hands at the time.
Back on guns!!! Nice review!
Cool flames in intro!
Like ur style mate
Sweet pocket gun. 357 mag actually made me cry out in pain. Three times. Couldn’t empty the cylinder.
Did you notice the ATF agent trying to put the sneak on you by using a beer can for a stealth snorkel? Some times, adult ADD can be a real life saver.
