Fun fact: You can carry Dog's Ball through Ravenholm, past the mines(drag it along the ceiling of the water areas, and for some reason it won't explode), across the coast, and into Nova Prospekt. The part that it is impossible to carry it over is the teleporter sequence, which is sadly the very last bit before you reunite with D0G himself.
This brings back so many memories from when I was a kid. I love the way you mess around with props throughout your playthrough. Even the act of exploring and playing with the physics in Half-life 2 is fun, so there's never a moment in this game that feels boring.
Wow, I'd never even considered reversing and waiting for the train to pass on the bridge. I was always flying along at such speeds in the buggy that playing chicken with it just seemed natural. Very prudent of you.
At this point we're all just spitting out everything known about Half-Life up to this point, to inform as many people as possible, just on time before the next installment arrives. Your punctuality is impeccable, Phillip.
Also: there are three ammo boxes w/ rockets. I wounder why they are here.... And if you thought, the rpg was a fire abd forget weapon, tough luck to you
I don't see how people forget anyway. You're blocked by a force field at the top, so your whole reason for going under the bridge is either to find a way ahead or disable the force field. Why anyone would go back after doing nothing but killing a few dudes is beyond me.
15:51 fun fact, you can drop down and reenter the building again and wait inside until the skilift thing arrives, effectively dodging ALL enemies that would normally climb to the roof to attack you! this especially helped me get the achievement for using only the grav gun
This game is so much better the second time you play. You notice so many more small details. Like I didn’t originally notice that Eli winks at Gordon after he makes Alyx blush.
My favorite way to play through Ravenholm is to only use the Gravity Gun. It was so satisfying getting the achievement at the end. The way I got through the roof section was just dodge and weave through the fast zombies.
As someone who hasn’t been able to play these games, but has wanted to learn since Alyx is out, I got to say this is one of the best explanation videos I’ve seen. You actually include gameplay, tell the story, and are entertaining. I actually kinda want to play these now cause of you. Thank you for some really good videos to watch during this Coronavirus quarantine :)!
I've played true the entire Half-Life series multiple times, but this video still brings some things i didn't know about like: the cart you can push forward just before exploding the gate. Something about this video was just really relaxing and fun to watch, maybe it's simply your voice, maybe it's the nostalgic gameplay, maybe it's both. I'm looking forward to the next parts, just as i looked forward to this one, Great entertainment Philip. And perhaps a usefull guide for those only playing the game for the first time.
why am i watching this? i've already played the campaign like 90 times, i've memorized enemy locations, the gman's speech, and i even memorized almost every line of dialogue in the game!
Duuude I'm just amazed how well our thoughts about various parts match. The scale of the bridge and and the calming music was definitely one of my favorites too. I just had this sense that since enemies are not coming now, they'll come after I've reached the ending part so I deliberately did that part slowly just enjoying on my way
Yisyisyis thank you so much Phil, i haven't been waiting for this, and I've already finished both hl games but hearing your voice and your playthrough's makes me feel warm inside.
Not to discount the utility of this video, but I can recommend wholeheartedly recommend Half-Life 2 to everyone who is interested in playing Alyx. I think it still holds up as an amazing single player FPS. And that's not nostalgia speaking. I only first played it in 2013 or so.
On one of my early playthroughs I brought D0g's ball all the way through Ravenholm. It's pretty much a gamebreaker, as zombies go after it seeing it as an enemy (and vice versa), while also being a good launchable object for the gravity gun. It broke the zombie-street for me for a while, because I didn't know how to go through it properly without it, it's just that useful when all the fast and poison zombies are pouring out. The only place I couldn't bring it was the cart ride to Grigori (it got cought up on the border of the level segments I guess), so it can simply be thrown to the end of the street where the fast zombies spawn and they won't even bother to come up for Gordon.
Yes, I also really enjoyed taking the functional ball (one that zaps) for as long as possible. It not only distracts zombies and crabs, it also kills them! I brought it all the way to the point where I kill the antlion boss (sry, I forgot how are they called)

I also beat the first game and both "expansions" in the past few months. Honestly, hl1 and hl2 feel very different to me. They are both unique in their own way, and they are both brilliant.
Breaking this game using rocketjumps and spamming "impulse 101" bound to a key to both survive and get ammo was a lot of fun (especially doing the car part without the car and ravenholm)
Half Life Alyx* I really dont get it, why you have to call it half life 3. I understand its the next big half life game, and half life always made huge steps in the industry, but the game is still called Alyx. Calling it HL3 just confuses people.

The bridge part is what I remember the most tbh of this game. Also the sand ones which were annoying. But I loved when we get that op gun later. It must be in part 2

I love the hl2 physics bugs. They happen often in gmod and rarely in singleplayer but often in synergy. When props just start "swimming" on the ground, like all the solid land becomes sea, and the corpses start dancing and spazzing out. Good times.
No matter how many times I do it, that train bit always gets me. It's probably the hardest part in the game, especially when you don't have enough speed

So when I binged played and overdosed on Half-Life 2 it would take over my dreams, but the polygons would be replaced by the real places making it all too terrifying...Sofia is depressing enough without Combine invasion...
Ravenholm isn't actually that bad for me since I get a lighting glitch on Black Mesa East which removes all shadows and lights everything up. This sucks though since I have never played Highway 17 with the un-glitched lighting and it looks really good. :(
When Dog dropped a boulder on Gordon's head killing him instantly, Alyx just laughed joyfully. What a psychopath.
