- DISCLAIMER....not a professional here....cannot read music! Ha! Some silly folks were asking ME for a Guitar Man lesson....like i really know, but here it is anyways. Played on a 1965 Harmony H173.
Ain’t he just the best? I love his lessons, playing and manner. What’s not to love, right?
Course, I’m his mother❤️
You raised him right!
It's so great that you just don't seem to know or care about naming notes or chords, and yet you play and teach so well. After a few hours studying your video I'm starting to come to grips with Jerry's style. Just to say thank you doesn't seem enough.
Thanks partner! I’m sorry...I wish that I knew something about music notation or theory...I taught myself at a young age and play by ear mostly...kind of embarrassing when I sit in with a group of real musicians and I don’t know some of the chords or timing they’re talking about. Either way...glad the video helped....there’s better out there though. :)
Dow
the Jerry Reed funky tuning is from high to low E C# G D A D , I remembered that i had heard it ,, just checked it for fun , A very simple great lesson from you , thanks
This is a cracking lesson full of quality and genuine personality. I was hooked about 10 secs in. And took away some good things to. Love this song...
10 seconds in and love this guy already!
it took me 20 to notice the hat and click subs !
I haven't played in about 5 years due to a medical condition watching your videos has gotten me interested in playing again
Thank you
I am extremely impressed that you break this tune down for everyone. Good job.
Thanks so much Dow. I'm 14 but been brought up around all this music and it's an absolute pleasure to learn this tune!
Finally found a proper tutorial, I started playing guitar 3 years ago and I never guessed I’d be able to play jerry reed, thanks for the tutorial! great job
Brother!! Thank you so much for making this video even though I'm 7 years late to finding it haha. This picking pattern has been kicking my ass lately and the camera angle on your picking hand as well as the way you played/explained it FINALLY made it stick. I can just about pick this tune without stumbling now. Thanks again!
Great job Tex! There is a cool story about how Jerry ended up playing on Elvis' cover of this song. There were of course highly professional guitarists in the studio with Elvis, but Elvis kept saying it didn't sound right and Elvis got highly frustrated. So, the producer ended up calling Jerry and Jerry went in and did it!
Thanks Steve! Oh ya...one of my favorite stories. Jerry was down fishing for Carp on the Cumberland River...when he was beckoned to come in and record for Elvis. Instead of going home and cleaning up, he went right in to the studio, unshaven, dirty, smelling like fish. When he walked into the studio, Elvis saw him and said, “What is that?” But as soon as Reed picked up a guitar and tuned it up to his funky tuning and started picking guitar man...Elvis smiled and knew he had the right man for the job!
@@texican65 Cool! Thanks Tex!
Love it! You learn like I do: EARS! Thanks for SHOWING us what your ears taught ya".
Thanks for posting this hoss!! Mighty fine lesson. Best lesson I've seen on one of my all-time favorite Jerry Reed songs. You summed it up extremely well despite not having Jerry's secret tuning!!! Sounds as close to the real thing as possible. Very little difference. You should indeed do more helpful lessons like this to help us Jerry fans with our pickin'!
What other lessons would you like?
Thank you! That is the single best lesson on how to play Jerry's Guitar Man. Fantastic!
Thanks guys...I have fun with it. I've got tennis elbow something awful from work, it's been hampering my playing...I can't hardly pick without it hurting my right arm anymore.....so, I've been on a break.
Is anybody getting the song down good enough?
I love jerry telling the story about how Elvis called him into the studio because no one in his band could figure out how to play the song.
Great job! You got enough to mock ol Jerry as good as any I have seen. Thanks for your tutorial. I'm traveling without a guitar so I can't practice right now so I hope I can tune back in to your channel when I get home. Sort of on quarintine but it won't last forever.
Thank you very much! I’m no pro...but nothing makes me happier than learning/playing/sharing a Reed tune. Lemmie know how your practice goes, and please don’t hesitate to ask questions. Have fun!

@@texican65 thanks my friend. I'm not a finger picker and I'm old but after you explained "the claw" I really think I can do it. Thanks, I am a fan
texican65 Hey man, great video. Do you know how to do that little solo he does on the recording?
Wow thanks Dow. You nailed it. Many thanks from a Jerry Reed fan in the UK
Great son! Very nice and simplified, in a very good way, for us! Plus you are so nice and gifted for teaching! Many thanks from Italy!
This is superb man. Thank you.
Fantastic! Love it! 💥👋👋🏆
Everybody is very welcome....I had fun making it!
Fun to watch too
Having trouble on the picking pattern
Thank you so much… What a joy this is to play!
THANKS A LOT!!!!!INCREDIBLY CLEAR AND WELL THOUGHT LESSON.
Awesome Man! Thanks for putting these videos on. Loved Amos Moses also. I don't know what you call your teaching style, but it sure as hell works for me better than college did! You are a Jerry Reed Jedi Master. Thanks again!
Jerry Reed Jedi Master...ha...that’s got a good ring to it...thanks partner! I’m no pro...but I try!
Thanks for breaking it down so well. Jerry Reed was one crazy SOB. 🤣
Thanks for the lesson. Not a second wasted in this video.
Absolutely brilliant first class
One cool dude Gerry reed fan sharing with us all Gerry's style God bless you that's beautiful man Thank you !
Good to see you back, old chap ! Keep that good work and thank you for sharing it with us. Cheers !
Great lesson and playing. The coolest! Thanks man.
Thank you for a great lesson and keeping it interesting. Please bring in new tunes to play.
Any requests mike?
Brilliant. Been looking to learn this for years.
Thank you very much for this lesson!
Thanks again! Great lesson.
Mate this is spot on, many thanks for clearing this up, I'm on it.
Great lesson, thanks! I'm going to get this down and play it at my next gig....I try to squeeze in as much Jerry Reed as I can get away with! :)
Great video !!!!! Greetings from Argentina. I´ll try it as soon as possible!!
Great lesson - I loved it - Thank you for making this video.
You’re very welcome pardner! I need to make some more...but not easy juggling life with a family and working for the railroad.
Nice pickin' Dow ! That old chopped Harmony H173 is sounding good. Thanks for the lesson.....and great hat !!
Great playing, love it!
Hey, you have nailed it for me!!! Thank you. You are a top man.
Thanks mate, learning that one now in Spain!! Really cool lesson
You certainly can do it, I will never be able to do it. You make it look easy and your guitar sounds great. All the best from an old fella here in England.
Come on old sport! You can do it....just gotta practice.....A LOT!
Man I had fun watching you do this ,wish I could .I'm gonna try an do it .
Heck...if I can do it Ron...anybody can. Just put the saw down for 5 mins and practice your guitar a little! Glad you enjoyed.
@@texican65 wish I had the cord shapes .this is amazing 👏
That was an awesome lesson! And such a nice tribute to Jerry Reed, one of the few real guitar Gods. 🎸
Thanks Fred, I really appreciate that. I’m just a backyard picker, but I’m trying to keep Jerry’s spirit alive. Anything else I can help you good folks with?
Amazing technique.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏
Jerry's guitar tuning as recorded: Eb / C / Gb / Db / Ab / Db
Absolutely stunning man !
Thank you for detailed explanation.
Hot damn I can’t wait to be a guitar man
I was a little unsure at first but damn if you didn't get it!! Good job!!😄😄👍👍
This is brilliant, you're obviously a massive reed fan as it seems you have worked out this on your own, plus the cap! This, along with big boss man are 2 of my favourite lesser known Elvis songs and have intoduced me to Gerry Reed. Anyways, I've practiced it a lot, and after a slow start, have almost got it down. Thanks dude
*jerry
pretty cool thanks for sharing that!
That's some damn fine pickin! Btw I'm jealous of that hat
Thanks buddy!
Ya...I’m lucky to have gotten some Reed memorabilia when there was still some available.
Here is Jerry's fancy tuning: low to high: Db-Ab-Db-Gb-C-Eb. I LOVE your simplified version, tuning the guitar like that is tedious. THANKS, man, you make my day!
BRILLIANT !! i Also LOVE Jerry Reed !! one of the Absolut BIG old Guitar heroes ..i Like to play "Jerry´s Breakdown" get me a long time of learning
Took me almost one year to get a nice speed on that one!
@@clakoclakson Yes, and now I had a good 9 months break from playing guitar ..
But it starts again and first one of my Strats is played.
Pretty dang good!
Thanks Snowman! That was a good lesson.👍
good lesson man and i like how you put it all together .and you are right the guys who did this music when by ear not theory !!!!!!!
how could anyone downvote this?
epic tutorial, ty bro
Usually because they’re jealous....and ugly...and have been to school and know all sorts of music theory...but still can’t play a lick!
@@texican65 the picking is tough, 3 hours at it and hitting about 60% speed...
if it was easy, everyone would be doing it ;)
fyi - For this tune, Jerry Reed tuned his guitar to (low to high) - Db Ab Dd Gd C Eb
its the B string tuned up to the 1st fret (C) that confuses everybody :)
I love your style. Nice one.
Thanks for your effort, gonna try it out!
Thank you verrry much, i salute you. Please make more Jerry Reed lessons greetings friend.
Sounds GOOD to me man!....Many thanks.
Hey Texican65....just seen your vid and love the down the neck angle....really useful to try and learn JR's picking patterns....Cheers! Neil
Thank you for sharing your tips ! Regards
The tuning is exactly what you said. Drop D but half step flat. Its a D-Flat 2sus4 chord. Db Ab Db Gb C Eb it's weird because the B goes to C.
Great lesson I am going to learn that one. Any other Jerry Reed tunes?
this is great thanks dow
Great ❤
Thanks jerry weed
I see this feller everyday on the side walks playin fer change and smokes. Hope everybody hits like on his video, I know I did.
What's up RAILROAD!!!
Just follow this little pattern. You got 4 seconds. need you to 6.6 and take it at restricted speed. My claw don’t hammer quite like that.
This is gold thanks man
You’re very welcome...glad you enjoyed it! Now jump on it SON!
Great stuff.
Thanks for the lesson man, but you realy should do the intro a lot slower, cause i had a hard time figuring out how to implement the fingerpicking patern and how to play the first back and forth in the intro
Ps. For anybody who is strugling with that part you actualy start by playing the last bar of the picking patern (the 2nd and 3rd string) while pressing 9th fret on 2nd and 10th on 3rd string and then you slide it to 10th on 2nd and 11th on 3rd string and just continue the picking patern from the begining. Just note that you should slide at the same time that you hit the 6th string aka, The first bar.
Thank you so muuuuch man.
Great job!
thats so cool cheers for that
Nice lesson DOW thanks!
Good lesson
Would you kindly tackle the Elvis version of "Guitar Man" with Jerry playing on it?? All the layered guitar harmonies and tracks with this much (OR MORE) detail... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! .. btw, awesome job on this video and song!
That was Church of Jerry Reed good ... bless you ... son!
Church of Jerry Reed...I really liked that. Thanks man.
Thanks for this!.
Always liked this, but clueless as to how Reed got this one going...
Getting the pattern down is the secret...It took me two days....but Oh Man!....
Nice job brutha
Reed. Wztched this again amazing brother would love t to pick with ya
Cool brother, sounds great! Can you do a video playing the whole thing man? The chord he uses after the the "0-5-6-7" walk up, is "-X05685-" I believe. It may not be right, but it sounds close enough. Also I've been told the original tuning Reed used for this was the 2nd string tuned up one step from A# to C. But I've been learning it just fine "The Dow Way" heh heh. Cheers Man!
ledbthan
Dig the badass beard too!!
Merci beaucoup je vois mieux le style. Question. A tu baissé les cordes de la guitare, elles sont souvent hautes sur les classique?
Cool.
Great!
Hell yeah !
Your a nice guy, cheers
Good job! Are you tuned in standard tuning just one and half step down?
Спасибо, здорово !!!!!!
Could you do a thing called love or like talk about the good times.... great tutorial by the way :) u can pick SON!!
Lemmie see if I can work on "Talk About the Good Times" for you!
you da man bro
Hope your alive and well !
drop D tuning Jerry Reed Played it in drop the D flat. Turn the 6th String The low E to D
Yes thank you….that is exactly how I have the guitar tuned in the video. But that is NOT how Reed has it tuned on his recording.
Nice pickin..thank you brother
You’re very welcome!
Hello, what is the model of this guitar please. Thank you for this lesson it helped me a lot. Thierry Girard Old French Guitarist.😁
Comment ca va? Thanks for the inquiry, glad you enjoyed the video. As indicated in the description, it is a 1965 Harmony H173, almost identical to Jerry’s Baldwin 801…built by the same company.
@@texican65 Thank you for your answer, I found this guitar, I lowered the strings and put a very strong tension, it had to be fine.
Maybe I'll saw off a bit...
I take back the guitar that I had stopped to work in 1978. I was Shoemaker for 44 years, and now retired. My idol is Jerry Reed. I worked on Jerry's breakdown, Guitar Man is next.
Thank you and see you soon.
THIERRY GIRARD. Old French Guitar Man
Sorry but I couldn't send the photo of the guitar I found. It's not important
