  • Today I checked out live concert performance of Iron Maiden and their song Hallowed Be Thy Name. I definitely loved them not only from vocal coach reacts point, but also their energy and crowd participation. The work with contrast is incredible and the sustainability in belting was insane. It was an amazing first time reaction! I was blown away by this performance and super excited by the way they embodied those amazing lyrics in music.

Bruce has been their primary singer for let's say 80% of their schedule, you can do the math. Add his solo career and we can say you are witnessing a 50 years old singer with 2'000 gigs under his belt, singing the last encore of a 2hrs set. And if you were familiar with IronMaiden you will definitely know this is not re-recorded: he had some mishaps here and there which he overcame with class as always. First of all, thank you so much for reacting to the legendary Iron Maiden. Like many of the other comments, now you’ve heard Bruce sing in his later years it would be brilliant if you could compare this performance to his famous one in 1982 at Hammersmith in London. He has greatly changed his singing style over the years to prolong his voice but, as a young man, his live vocals were unbelievable. If you think he likes to hold onto long notes in this performance, you’ll love what he did back in ‘82! Thanks again and loved the reaction.

Katrina, Bruce has been belting out the vocals like this for his first band Sampson since around 1975. Then he joined Maiden in 1982, he took a little break for a few years in the 90's, then came back to Maiden doing this kind of singing every since then. Stargazer is a great studio song, not so much live. For a great live performance for Ronnie James Dio:
Mistreated live 1977 with Rainbow (35 yrs old) or any song from the 1977 Munich concert.
Children of the Sea 1983 live with Dio (41).
And to hear him older, Neon Knights 2009 with Heaven and Hell (66 yrs old a year before his death from cancer).
He started singing before 1960 in the doo wop style. Listen to Love is All 1974 with Roger Glover's album The Butterfly Ball for a non-hard rock/metal song, then live in 1999. Go back further to 1963 with Ronnie and the Prophets, I Left my Home in San Francisco.

His moving of the jaw may be the result of no formal training in the early years. He was singing in a way he thought that all singers sing (remember - no videos from shows etc. in 70s when he started) and that may be the result for that. 20 years later he took some lessons (not from the teacher, more like extensive reading on the subject) but probably this become habit for him.

Iron Maiden do not go through the motions. They leave it all out there on the stage - full throttle every time. I think they get their energy from the crowds and from the music itself. They also have a lot of fun and you can see that. Steve Harris and Nicko McBrain often “get carried away” when the song moves up tempo and then have a good laugh at Bruce trying to hammer the words out at a thousand miles an hour! I have read elsewhere that they are also pretty blunt about each others performance. I don’t think Steve Harris accepts anything less than 100%

    Katrinka,
I'm glad that as a vocal coach & singer, you can appreciate Bruce Dickenson's vocals with Iron Maiden. Hallowed Be Thy Name was off Maidens 1982 album Number of the Beast, which was Bruce's first album with the band.
Now I said that, so I could say this, I would love to hear your thoughts about Bruce's singing on the following Maiden songs. "7th son of a 7th son",,
"Rime of the Ancient Mariner", "Fear of the Dark, & "Alexander the Great". All live versions please.
I was also happy to see how you became one with the song, swayed to it, sang a little bit, & you now understand the energy you use in just listening to a Maiden song live. You feel like you just had a workout. Being at a Maiden concert is 3 fold worse, however, the best time you'll ever have. Anyway, I hope you react to those songs above, you won't be disappointed.

First 30 seconds - they look exhausted... well yeah they are at the end of their marathon playing 23 shows in 13 countries covering 50,000 miles and virtually every continent except Antarctica in 45 days. Bruce doing double duty as the Pilot of their plane -EdForce One. Iron Maiden is one band that will always give a minimum of 110% to their live shows. They are amazing live and being in that crowd is an experience - epically on the songs like Fear of the Dark where the fans chant along with the band. I hope you do more Iron Maiden from different eras - I first saw them live when I was 13 in 1983 and seen them 5 times since - the last time being August of last year and they still deliver! Thank you beautiful and talented Katrinka - happy new year - your reaction was amazing!

Ms Kat, Having seen this band live numerous times, Bruce's voice sounded very tired here, and he still sounded that great. Hearing him live is a whole different experience. His voice can not be captured on recordings properly. He is SO good it leaves you speechless. And their set list is usually 3 hours long. He sounds exactly the same on the last encore most nights. He truly is one of the greatest metal vocalists ever.

I've never paid much attention on whether Bruce always has this jaw-shake, but for this song it's kinda fitting. These are basically a man's last words, so I can imagine his jaw would be shaking.

Not sure how you came to choose this performance, but to get Bruce in his prime, if you can find performances in the 80s or 90s, this is where he is at the top of his game vocally. Good idea might be to just ask the subscribers on the community or on social media which performance to use.

If you liked this, you should react to that song from 1982 performance, where Bruce is young and at his top. Here is 50 years old and he's still killing it.

Iron Maiden, amazing and awesome group. He has a great voice still, a fantastic talent. Glad you are reacting to Maiden, Metallica, my original favorites. Yes Bruce is like Floor, Simone, or Damian Wilson (and many others) an amazing story teller. Love the reaction and looking forward to more Maiden. And Happy New Year to you also.

You should check out the “Studio performance “... It’s from 1982 this performance was from 2009... and Bruce the singer is not only just the singer HE PILOTS THE JET ... anyway the studio track vocally is AMAZING, long held notes, great range, and the tempo is kept under control, so he’s not rushing to fit all the lyrics in, this live version not bad as far as rushing due to it being a live performance, but huge difference between “studio” version from 1982 and “live” version from 2009....

Plus they have an history channel on RUclips of their own in which they explain the historical event behind the song in question. Also for these reasons they are truly unique! And Iron Maiden has Ed Force One. a 757 on this tour and a 747 on another tour. And both flown by their lead singer Captain Bruce Dickinson.
Bruce was (until his mandatory retirement at 65) a full blown commercial pilot. Initially for Astraeus Airlines until they went belly up in 2011, then chaired Cardiff Aviation (now known as Caerdav) specializing in pilot training and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul).

Bruce Dickinson, 'The humain air raid siren", throat cancer survivor, licenced 737, 747 and Airbus 320 pilot, Olympic level fencer, writer of children books, founder of a flying school, owner of a driving and racing school and stable, about 80 years old now, and STILL does all that, but alas he reached the age limit for his piloting licences and cannot fly the band's planes himself anymore. A true Renaissance Man in every sense of the term. UP THE IRONS !

    I suggest Ronnie James Dio.
For great live performances for Ronnie James Dio:
Mistreated live 1977 with Rainbow (35 yrs old) or any song from the 1977 Munich concert.
Children of the Sea 1983 live with Dio (41).
And to hear him older, Neon Knights 2009 with Heaven and Hell (66 yrs old a year before his death from cancer).
He started singing before 1960 in the doo wop style. Listen to Love is All 1974 with Roger Glover's album The Butterfly Ball for a non-hard rock/metal song, then live in 1999. Go back further to 1963 to hear him croon with Ronnie and the Prophets, I Left my Home in San Francisco.

    Hello Katriinka!
If you want to hear a band that Iron Maiden has heavily influenced, I highly recommend a singer named Brittney Slayes, who is the lead singer of a Canadian power metal band called Unleash the Archers! I would recommend:
    1) Awakening
    2) Tonight We Ride
    3) Time Stands Still
    4) Abyss
    5) Test Your Metal
Relatedly, Brittney Slayes could be called the "Female Bruce Dickinson." That's how good she is! 🤘🤘🏹🏹🏹
