A monopod is one of the most-versatile tools that a photographer can have, and it's often overlooked. Like many things in photography, buy the best available with your money, and it will last a long time.
Excellent tutorial on monopods. Having essential tremors I use my monopods frequently where tripods are not practical. Another accessory that works well with them is an L bracket that allows switching between portrait and landscape easily.
@denisroy81 agreed my anxiety causes minor shakes in my hands, I often find myself reaching for my tripod and using it one legged. The weight is the biggest downside because I like to shoot in the woods.
Excellent discussion. I am a Manfrotto/Bogen fan, both for tripods and monopods, and their heads (as you note, the Italian-made units are almost indestructible).
