SHAG / THE CAGE from LIVE STREAMING FROM TOKYO

From the psychedelic jam band SHAG's first live streaming concert "LIVE STREAMING FROM TOKYO EPISODE III - THE SHAG STRIKES BACK -" held on Thursday, May 20, 2021, the band has released an even more elaborate mix of "THE CAGE"!
With a shocking relaunch in December 2020, SHAG is the dopest and most radical 2020s jazz-rock of all time.
The lineup consists of SUGIZO (Gtr & Vln), KenKen (Ba), one of Japan's leading bass heroes and a member of early SHAG, Shinpei Ruike (Tp), one of the top improvisers of our time, Kazuhiro Bessho (Key)of a brilliant keyboardist formerly of Yasei Collective, SUGIZO's longtime bandmate and extremely versatile percussionist Kenji Yoshiura (Per), and the amazing new generation of skillful player Yukino Matsuura (Dr).
The improvisation battle between six geniuses is an unpredictable thrill and a beautifully ecstatic jam session.
In conjunction with the psychedelic and trippy video by Shinya Takaoka, a frenzied ensemble that seemed to unleash the inner magma of each member at once.
Under the tense atmosphere, the interplay between the players, all searching for the right moment to make a sound, is as tense as watching a sword fight, and as cathartic as letting go and letting it all hang out.
Why did SUGIZO revive SHAG, the opposite of his original solo album "Love and Tranquility", in 2020, the year of the Coronavirus pandemic?
He referred to the consciousness and feeling of the late 1960s and 1970s, when the rebellious spirit to society and anarchism were inextricably linked with music.
"Division is widespread, discrimination is rampant, and extraordinary inequalities are worsening, ...... I want to appeal true freedom and the dignity of all life to this modern world. Music can be a means to that end. So did Jazz, Rock and Funk half a century ago.And they were fused together at a high level.
I revived SHAG in order to customize the important attitudes of that time to the 2020s, to make the music freer and more evolved, and above all to seek the shiver, sensuality and euphoria of sound through improvisation". (SUGIZO)
SUGIZO’s tone of voice as he talked about the relaunch of SHAG and his determination was filled with a sense of urgency for the world and love for music.

2021年5月20日(木)に開催された、サイケデリック・ジャムバンド SHAG初となる配信ライヴ『LIVE STREAMING FROM TOKYO EPISODE Ⅲ ～THE SHAG STRIKES BACK～』より、更に精巧なミックスを施した「THE CAGE」を公開！
2020年12月、衝撃の再始動を果たした今最もドープで過激な2020年代のジャズ・ロック。
布陣はSUGIZO(Gtr & Vln)を首領に、初期SHAGのメンバーでもあり今や日本を代表するベースヒーロー KenKen(Ba)、当代屈指のトップ・インプロヴァイザー 類家心平(Tp)、元Yasei Collectiveの才人鍵盤奏者 別所和洋(key)、SUGIZOの長年のバンドメイトである極めて多彩なパーカッショニスト よしうらけんじ(Per)、そして驚異の新世代技巧派 松浦千昇(Dr)。
6人の鬼才が織りなすインプロヴィゼーション・バトル、それは予想不可能なスリル、そして美しき恍惚のジャム。
極めてサイケデリックで異次元へのトリップを誘う高岡真也によるVJ映像と連動し、メンバー各自の内なるマグマを一斉に暴発させるような狂乱の合奏。
張り詰めた空気の中、音を鳴らす間合いを全員が探り合っているようなインタープレイは、剣術の試合を観ているような緊張感と、そこから解放されてすべてをぶちまけるカタルシスの連続。
SUGIZOはヒーリングミュージックに特化したオリジナル・アルバム『愛と調和』を世に送り出す一方で、なぜその真逆に位置するSHAGを、コロナ禍の2020年に復活させたのか？
彼が言及したのは、社会的な反骨精神、アナーキズムが音楽と分かち難く結びついていた1960年末～70年代の意識と感覚だった。
「分断が広がり、差別が横行し、異常な格差が深刻化する……この現代社会にやはり真の自由と全ての命の尊厳を訴えたい。音楽はそのための手段となり得るはず。
半世紀前、ジャズもロックもファンクもそうだった。そしてそれらが高次元で融合していた。
当時の重要なアティテュードを2020年代にカスタマイズして、音楽をより自由に、更に進化させていくために、そして何よりインプロヴィゼーションによる音の戦慄と官能、多幸感を求めるために、SHAGを復活させた」（SUGIZO）
