  • Hey Everyone, in today's review we'll be checking out the 2009 Ford Expedition EL Limited & 2009 Chevrolet Suburban LT. Both vehicles seem pretty nice, but lets see how well they've held up over the past 11 years. Which One would you pick?

    I bought my first ford expedition 4 years ago with 165k miles for $6k. Did some updates on all suspension parts and maintenance tune ups, it been running great. No transmission issues or any check engine lights. Still going strong hitting 260k miles soon. Ford built tough for sure!

    After checking out both brands back in 2004. I bought a brand new Expedition because the 2nd and 3rd row seats go down completely flat and the fit & finish looked higher quality. I still own it to this day. And them outside mirrors on the Expedition have power fold.

    In 2017, I swapped by 2009 LT Suburban for a 2014 Expy EL Limited. My Expedition has 90K on it and I have no plans to replace it. If I had to replace it, it would be another Expy or perhaps a Toyota Sequoia. GM build quality has really slid in recent years.

    • @BrandonWest87
      @BrandonWest87 Год назад +2

      Honestly, GM build quality has been trash since the 90s. Had a ‘91 S10 that was a maintenance queen. Radiator, heater core, several coils, drain plug in the rear diff rounded off inside itself (took a 1/2” drive head), a dozen or so fuel pump relays, 2 fuel pumps, alternator, thermostats, AC compressor, cracked dash, the silver paint had completely deteriorated and was rusting before the truck was even 10 years old (the black paint was okay), the leaf springs sagged, the cloth seats were ruined and tearing apart at the 8 year mark, manual window crank broke, interior door handle return springs broke often, outer passenger door handle snapped in half, a couple of oil pressure sensors, a locked up rear brake drum, and I’m sure I’m missing something else.
      Fast forward a few years and my wife wants an HHR so I buy her one. In two years the drivers interior door handle snapped off (was chrome painted plastic garbage), gutless little engine couldn’t even maintain speed climbing hills with 4 adults in it, interior was LOUD on interstates, gear position sensor went out, rear wheel bearings went out, hard plastics everywhere, and it rode like a log truck.
      In laws have owned several trailblazers, equinoxes, and Acadias. All of those have had rampant transmission issues. Surging, mis-shifting, TCM error codes…all before 75k miles.
      Every Dodge (Ram 1500) Ford (Taurus and Navigator) and Honda (Civic, Insight, Odyssey, Goldwing, Rebel 1100 DCT) product I’ve owned since those GM junkers have all been fantastic vehicles with minimal upkeep aside from fluids, plugs, brakes.

    I bought the 2012 Lincoln Navigator "L", which is virtually identical to the Expedition in drive train and interior layout, but has a number of standard upgrades over the Expedition. Note that the power tailgate switch mounted on the door frame of the Suburban cannot be accessed from the inside when the door is closed. Ford/Lincoln chose to place the switch on the interior side panel so it can be easily accessed to open or close from the interior. Very handy when camping and sleeping in the vehicle and it cannot be activated by children when the vehicle is in motion. With a full 54 inch wide flat deck with seats folded, it fits a double size air mattress perfectly.

    Being relatively knew to both vehicles, having never owned either. I have found a ton of "problem" links come up for the 5.4L Ford engine, enough for a DIY mechanic like my self to shy away from. Not seeing the same amount come up for the 5.3L Chevy engine. One thing I think you should to point out for viewers is the amount of latches for child seats. We almost bought a 2010 Suburban yesterday (wanting to upgrade from our minivan, but discovered the 3rd Row only has 1 tether and no anchors... The 2nd row (bench seat in the model we looked at) has 3 tethers, but only 2 anchor systems, 1 on the passenger side and 1 in the middle seat. For older kids this wont be an issue. But with younger kids, this isn't ideal. Great quick comparison video, about cosmetics and creature comforts only.

    I had an 08 Escalade (that generation) up until this week when a truck ran me off the road. Looks like it's totalled. Here are my thoughts on GM:
    Like he says, the dash was cracked in mine also. The button decals wear off. Carpets wear poorly. The transmission was beginning to have issues. The previous owner had to replace the engine. The rear lift gate would not go up/down automatically anymore (grinding noise). Camshaft position sensor was broken (unhooking it worked - behind accessory pulley. Lost some efficiency). Power running boards were broken (relay taken out to keep them up).
    Just telling you, from my experience the quality on GM products is sub par. I'm shopping for a Ford Expedition EL as we speak. I hated it all falling apart around me.
    This guy is right - Ford is better. My 2001 expedition fit/finish interior quality was better than the 2008 Escalade. I'd still have it if it weren't for those damn spark plugs blowing out.
    Every car has it's issues though.

So far everything mechanical is original. My main gripe is the aluminum hood and tailgate are known for corrosion and mine is no exception. Paid $1400 to get it repaired. So far 4 years later it's good. Great room and still has the same power and smoothness as the day it was new. Hate the hard plastics and cost cutting head scratches like only 1 auto up down window, rear windows don't go all the way down, only tilt wheel not telescoping as well, these vehicles where almost $50k new in 2011!! The Expedition has a real 3rd row and can hold 3 5-10 teenagers. The Suburban 3rd row has no real footwell and very little leg room. You can see it in the video when he shows the Suburban interior.

    Expedition has less cargo volume. 130 ft vs 137 in the Suburban. The Expedition seats fold into the floor which is nice. I've owned an Expedition and the flat floor is super helpful. The engine of the Expedition is not great. They use the extra long spark plugs that break off in the engine. My rear hubs wore out and I had lots of gasket and vacuum issues. The BIGGEST knock on the Expedition is the panel contamination. Body panels from 2002 - 2018 were contaminated during manufacture and will oxidize from the inside out, your paint falls off. There is no fix for this and Ford has issued a number of Technical Service Bulletins on this issue. Common spots are the front fenders and rear hatch. I'm now looking at getting a Suburban/Yukon XL to replace my Expy but I love the fold into the floor seats!

      Don't get the 5.3 with cylinder de-activation, it'll give you just as much headache as the 5.4. The ecoboost expedition can be an option, or toyota sienna, town and country, pacifica, odyssey vans if you don't need to tow.

    • @chadfleenor2275
      @chadfleenor2275 3 года назад +1

      They changed the head design of the 5.4 in 2008. Different spark plugs and everything. I have a 2010 and changed my spark plugs at 100K miles in about 30 minutes. I do try to take care of mine. I have completed the differential, transmission, and transfer case service at 80K miles. Changed the radiator coolant at 100K. I do all the work myself, dealer wanted 400 to do a pan drop on the transmission. CRAZY!!!! It's at 116K miles now, still rolling down the road. I tow a little with it, usually under 4K lbs, and don't have any issues at all with that low of weight. Pulling my side by side, Viking Vi on a 14" trailer, I can barley tell it's back there, except for the fuel consumption.

    I have an 08 expedition eddie bauer and would chose that over the suburban anytime.
    173k miles and nothing in worn on any on the interior controls ir buttons, much better quality interior.
    I think the trans issues with the expedition stem from that "sealed for life transmission" ninsense.
    It does have a dip stick located under a cap on the left side of the trans - right next to the super hot cat! Who checks that. Low fluid causes shift studder.
    Just do a fluid/filter change every 50k miles and it would be fine.
    Fluid seeps out over 14 years believe it or not, dumbness not to use a dipstick people can check.

    Two things. up in the front you can turn off the power liftgate which is probably what happened in your Suburban in the video. The driver of the Suburban was probably a woman which is why the paint was all chipped off of the buttons. I drive a Suburban pretty much the same one you showed in the video. But when it comes down to it I would like a Ford. Not having anything against my suburban.

    By '09 the 5.4 hopefully had some better spark plugs after the disaster of the earlier models with the Tritons. I'm wondering if the Sub had the cylinder deactivation that Chevy put in their v8's.....def not a fan of those as their components wear out way faster than the pre '07 ones. Ford's interior is better in my opinion, they've had power 3rd row long before any other brand. Both have a massive amt of space, I've got an '03 Expi, would love an EL but both are very solid vehicles. Edge to the expi just cuz I have one currently ;)
