I bought a new 2019 Z71 last year which is super nice but not as sturdy built as the 2005
I had to have my transmission replaced at just over 198,000. The 6 speeds (2007-2014) are known to have bad torque converters and bad pumps. When the new one was installed, it came with the upgraded converter and pump. It gave pretty much no warning before it went. Diagnosed that it was slipping in all gears.

Greg B I sold it at 246k miles. It was still running decent for a vehicle with that many miles. Had a clicking on the engine but the transfer case, transmission and everything else was good.
Yup. I had 2 Tahoes and man I loved those SUVs. Very minimal maintenace. I had the 2003 & 2007 models and they both were a gem. Decided to switch up after over 15 years to an escalade and man I regret it. I have never had to see the mechanic this much. I'm going back and I am specifically looking for 2000 model Tahoes. The peace of mind and reliability with those trucks are awesome!!
What year was the escalade because the use the same platform. i have an 05 escalade with 134k. owned it for 10 years now with no major problems. i wrench on it myself. basic stuff has gone wrong. water pump, alternator, brake lines.
You must have gotten a 10 or above with that switch to 4 cylinder crap. The 07 must have been an all wheel drive or just a lemon because the motor is beast and as long as you upgrade the torque converter to a billet steel at about 130,000 miles that thing will last at least 300,000 miles on the low end. If you wait, the tranny repair gets more expensive.
Back in December spun out with my 94 K1500 and crashed into a side of a iced over bridge rear bumper first at 30 mph. As i recently bought that truck i was really pissed off, get out and look at it and and it bent the rear chrome bumper about an inch on one side and 0 damage to the rest of the truck. Really impressed me. Got back in drove off no problem.

am i the only one that freaks out a little when you hear someone refer to 2000 2002 2004 or 05 or 07 time period as the old days? Man i cant beleive its been 20 freakin years already
Ya I can't believe 20years have gone by so fast it is like you tell someone you bought a 2004 tahoe and they look at you like how come you bought so old vehicle, it not till you liok back and say wow that many years but they did make better cars then they do now.
My friend's mom drove a similar Tahoe to 300k before getting rid of it. They also have a Silverado 1500 HD from 2002 with 400k and running like a champ!
The 1500 HD was actually a 2500 with a leaf removed from the spring pack in the rear end. It was a bit of a marketing gimmick to try to sell more pickups, but it did work and they were good trucks. They could haul more than the standard 1500 but didn't ride as harsh as the 2500. GM's attempt to try to have the best of both worlds.
My girls parents have a 02 suburban 5.3 with almost 320k on it. Original motor and trans. Lifter finally starting to go. My boss had an 02 suburban 5.3 a few years ago that had 300k and still ran/drive perfect. And i had an 02 silverado 5.3 last year with 280k that ran and drove perfect.
im at 302,657. and no check engine light and can prove it on my channel. and just did trans filter, marker on old trans filter said 74,894 last time it was changed doesnt mean they didnt drop the drain plug then fill here n there lol then killed one in an s10 at 200,000.
BIG A MEMPHIS 10 my dad originally planned to sell his 2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT with 350,000+ miles after he bought a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban LT with 50,000 miles on it in 2019 but I told him that if he tried to sell it, nobody would want to buy it because it is f*cked up on the outside since he abused the hell out of it over the years since new because it was his work vehicle for both of his gas stations that he owns to this day
The 4.3 vortec had an intake manifold gasket problem. Pretty much every one of them. The gasket goes bad because it is inferior and you start burning antifreeze. Then you replace the gaskets with premium Felpro with metal in them. Gm should have had to recall every one of them.
01:50 "This one is 18 years old, they built them alot better in the day" Hop in a time machine and go back 18 years ago and all the Scotty Kilmers in the world would be blasting this same vehicle saying that the ones built 18 years prior were much better.
True! Before my 2001 Yukon I drove a 1989 K-Blazer. Steel Blue and white - a beauty. Put 275K miles on it before I needed more room for the family. I'd drive one today if I could put modern guts in it.
2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, original owner. I bought it brand new with 7 miles on it. It's got 226k miles and still purring along. Room and comfort. The seats are like couches. So comfy. I love it. It's home to me.
My mom used to have a '99 Yukon I think it was when I was little. Got rid of it in '06 for a Honda Accord. 10 years later the Accord got totaled because a hail storm destroyed it. Wish she would have kept the Yukon.
my dad has owned both a suburban and tahoe the suburan was a 08 and the tahoe was a 99 the only reason the suburban went was because the transmision gave out
2005 Yukon Denali 6.0 V8, black w/ two-tone leather, 170k, just bought it for $5k, no interior issues, paint still buffs up nice, no dings or dents, 1 owner, so there’s definitely deals out there if you look 😎
I just bought a 2001 4x4 Tahoe today for $2,000 in Portland, OR. 260,000 miles and that thing just purred during the test drive, suspension tight, shifted smooth, good acceleration going uphill and the original paint was pristine. All California/Oregon miles from original owner. No rust on the frame or exterior. Coming from the midwest, I was shocked. I'm super happy I found this gem. I'm gonna convert it into a camper/ski truck.
It’s been great for me! No mechanical issues whatsoever. I love it for what it is. I put about 5,000 miles a year into it (Im up to 280,000). Engine purs and tranny is super smooth. I took it all the way to Salt Lake City and back last winter no problems.
I’ve always liked that generation of Tahoe right there. I think they had a cheap interior but a friend had one with 300k on it before it died. Don’t buy new Chevy crap
I also have an 02 Chevy Tahoe with the 5.3 V8, amazing reliable SUV never let's me down. Mine's about to reach 200k miles but still drive's very smooth. Always loved the look of these Tahoes.
In 2007 Chevy started using active fuel management. It shuts down 4 cylinders when it can to lower fuel consumption. It also rips the lifters apart. Thanks Chevy.
@harry b Moronic people like you are the reason my job sucks changing plastic timing chain guides for your damn OHC motors. My pushrod LS gets unbelievably better milage then my damn OHC Ford's and it feels way better on the low end. OHC, more then two valves per cylinder is total bullcrap, that you absolutely do not need in a V8.
Obd1andDown if you want more power per cubic inch then yes it is needed, look at the 5.3 vortec for example, it’s making power that the 5.0 coyote was making back in 2011
I love my 2004 it's got 160,000ish miles and is strong powerful and safe, if anyone hits me, they're newer car will suffer more than likely. Love the older Chevy's and GMC's. I love your info scotty! Iv used a few of them and fixed my car issues all my myself! And I'm just a single mom 3 kids on a budget so thank you so much appreciate it
I have the 4WD version of the truck Scotty is showing. 275,000 and runs perfectly. Everything stills works except the compass on the rear view mirror. I expect MY tahoe to go 400,000 plus. It is mostly due to the durability of the LS engine, 4l60e trans, and the Eaton rearend. My neighbor has a 1997 Z71 that is daily driven with 525,000 miles. And it purrs like a breast-fed kitten.
And my dads 2015 malibu has 345k miles so far on the original 2.5L ecotec and trans, engine light is on but that's because of a o2 sensor, he's gonna be at 400k real soon, lots of highway driving lol
Sold my dads old 04 Tahoe before going to college that he bought right when I was born. 362k miles and never had a major problem. Now here I am in college looking to buy an 04 or alrighty newer Tahoe.
95 here also, 252k on the ticker and it's running like a beast still. Shes starting to show some rust but at her age, in the midwest it's hard to find something without a bunch of rust. Trucks that arent even 5 years old have more rust than my 25 year old one, and I laugh at them for it. Our metal dinosaurs will keep rolling down the road while the plastic ones rattle to pieces in half the time it took ours to rust.
I have a 2002 Tahoe, identical...need to do the water pump soon-never had problems until the small coolant leak on the pump...239,000 miles. Pulls my 1957 Ideal camper like it's not even there, runs like a top.
While you are doing that, consider changing the knock sensors and adding the suggested RTV. also, there is a sensor that tends to leak at the back of the engine that is easy to get to when the intake is off. Worth the time to change out, and easy to do by yourself.
True you don't need to pull the intake to change the water pump. Just a suggestion if you are going to spend time in there... it's likely you'll have to change the knock sensors eventually.
They are long lived but in the snow belt you will probably be changing out the brake lines as they tend to rust where they cross over the frame. Generally it occurs just forward of the ABS module. I've replaced a lot of them.
DesMck36 I see a lot of these in Wichita, KS. If I was to get 1 of these older models, I’d probably get the GMC Version even though they look the same and are the same vehicle.
Real spill scotty!!! I just bought a 04 5.3 with a solid 160k. Runs like a champ!! You made me realize I made a hell of a purchase. Thank you!!! Your the man scotty.
My 04 Silverado got me through the recession without any major repairs. The paint didn’t fall off of it. I don’t expect a lot, so it’s easy to love it…
About time you made a video on these bad boys. GM made an excellent truck of this design back in the day, I’m planning on getting one. The design is old but good for today’s standards.
2001 105k miles in Mexico. Just took it on a good trip, rock solid. Newer suburbans and tahoes look powerful and luxury but I wouldn't trade reliability for that.
My dad got a Honda Pilot in 2010. Everything but the engine was total crap. Paint is faded and everything. So seeing these cars 20-25 years old with perfect paint just hurts! He should of got one of those instead.
@@porschematt991 mine doesn't have perfect paint it's just missing some paint it's not faded it just to scratched up in some places cuz we need to take it to the car wash it still shines
@@firstlast7613 Yep and they built them with pride back then. Still got my 99' Accord V6 running strong. Nowadays they build them like they're coming out of vending machines. Oh wait they really do(CARVANA) 😆
Love my 02 Chevy Tahoe 💕💕 138k miles and I can't get over how good she run, no issues at all with simple upkeep! Rather pay for gas than expensive repairs 🙌🏽
I had a 2002 Suburban LT Autoride with 204K on it. Ran great, was super comfortable, and took my family ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE. I donated it to a friend in need 2 years ago and it's still running strong. The best vehicle I ever owned.
Coming from a guy who owns a beautiful 2006 Chevy with a pushrod V8 and a 4 speed (4L80E) transmission.... it's nice to hear good ol' Scotty give these Chevys some love! 😎👍
@Carlos Rodriguez My dad has a 2013 silverado crewcab that he tows his 26' travel trailer with. He's towed that trailer 4k+ miles roundtrip across the country from Georgia to California and back. That truck will pull that trailer easily without any problems, even going up huge montains in 110-115 degree out west.
It's amazing how well an old Chevy will hold up if you just take care of it instead of just running it into the ground. Same is true for a lot of other cars as well.
Thank you Scotty bought my wife a 2005 Tahoe for cheap, with 130,000 miles, comfortable and still runs like new, changed all the fluids, put new tires on it, it's been ultra reliable and way better than spending 60 grand on a new one.
@@edgarh252 aesthetically, the 07-13 interiors I find to be hideous. But that's subjective. The generation that this video covers is more appealing to me.
Love old Chevys! First truck I had was an 02 Silverado. Just sold it with almost 200k on it and still ran like a champ. Now I got a 95. Love these trucks. Built to last!
Romans 6:23 _ my dad still drives his 1996 Chevy ck 1500 Cheyenne 5.0 Vortec V8 with 360,000 miles (original engine and 2nd transmission). All I could say, what a bulletproof truck we’ve had in the family. My uncle has an 08 Silverado 5.3 (108,000 miles) and it’s still holding up. Truth be told right after the Economic Recession and Government bailing out GM (2009-now) they’ve made nothing but unreliable and cheap trucks/SUVs
"When I was a kid, windows always fogged up up north." I had a similar problem with fogged up windows as a kid but not up north. Usually it happened near Lover's Lane.
Vehicles are not an investment. Older ones have deprecated to thier true value and the other commenter in this thread is just a condescending tool who likes to overpay for his things. Good for you saving your money!!
You don't know peoples finances I do pretty well for myself and drive a $4k Civic I paid cash for. I'll take that any day over someone paying payments on a $50k vehicle that won't be worth half that when they pay it off. Just because you can manage to make a $400 payment like a sucker doesn't mean you're better off. I'll drive my car for 5 years and might lose $2k. I'll take that any day
Non-AFM Gen III 5.3's are bullet proof. From previous experience with Gen IV AFM 5.3 with a blown head gasket at 125000 miles, definitely not. AFM truly did ruin GM legendary engine long term reliability.
@Greg B Oh long story short. I did not take Scotty's advice and paid a garage to replace the head gaskets and remove the AFM lifters with standard lifters. They charged me for a dongle disabler. 3 months later, I complained of engine noise, after they reprogrammed the computer to disable AFM, suddenly I had no oil pressure. They concluded my engine was shot and wanted me to buy a new engine. I declined. 3 months after that, I consulted an GM engine specialist who guessed my problem. Bad valley cover. Another $500 to replace the gen 4 valley cover with a Gen 3 valley cover, I've had consisitantly good to high oil pressure ever since. Engine noise I originally complained about were bad engine mounts I replaced myself. 142000 miles and counting now. But $7500 over the last 14 months in repairs definitely qualifies my 07 GMC Sierra as a money pit. But not necessarily a never ending money pit.
@@reempire888 Standard lifters without Active Fuel Management capabilities. There are videos that show how Active Fuel Management works. It isn't just simply shutting fuel off to 4 cylinders when it turns on.
My 03 Tahoe had 171k miles on it and they still stoled it and stripped it down to the frame. Those SUVs are still very valuable and the most reliable SUVs on the road.
I have a 2000. I paid 2800. Couldn't be happier with it. 177,000mi. Runs and drives like a dream. So far only one repair for 300. Didn't mind paying that at all. Great truck.
Got a 03 Tahoe. Just like you said. Runs great . Goes up hills in a snap. It’s no slow poke either. Plenty of room for gear one might have. Seats are very comfortable.
That’s like a 5.4 2v vrs 3v. 2v were good 3v not so much. Same things with the new 5.3s. They are Pos engines. I’ve seen multi get rebuilt at 50k miles. An older 5.3 2003ish. Will run till u park it
It is 2024 and my 2002 Tahoe has 374 thousand miles and runs great, update IAC started acting up . No big deal it was Original and inexpensive to replace

I'm sitting in my 2002 tahoe watching this and just giggling like a schoolgirl, love your vids scotty!
Carter Wood you weren’t giggling like a school girl, you are a school girl.
Giggity 😂😂👍

Are you looking to get a new car or you just love it so much that you watch videos of people reviewing it ?
It's crazy you just mentioned this Tahoe Scotty. My 2000 Tahoe was just totaled. I loved that truck.
Sorry to hear that. Those things are tanks.
My father's got hit from behind yesterday. All damage was some dented plastic pumper liner and paint chips on the towing hitch from the other car.

Mines got 250k we haven’t replaced anything
The 1500 HD was actually a 2500 with a leaf removed from the spring pack in the rear end. It was a bit of a marketing gimmick to try to sell more pickups, but it did work and they were good trucks. They could haul more than the standard 1500 but didn't ride as harsh as the 2500. GM's attempt to try to have the best of both worlds.
Same here lol

The 4.3 vortec had an intake manifold gasket problem. Pretty much every one of them. The gasket goes bad because it is inferior and you start burning antifreeze. Then you replace the gaskets with premium Felpro with metal in them. Gm should have had to recall every one of them.

5.3's are bullet proof

Scotty. I bought an 01 Tahoe that was a paramedic transport vehicle. 160,000 miles for a song. Very well maintained. Pretty cool ride.
That’s what I’m talking about!! GMT800 FTW!!
Hell yeah brotha
Haha, two of my favorite RUclipsrs. I beg to differ about the offroading though!
@@bandjolyn I have a 2005 Tahoe and all I did was put all terrain tires on it and have taken off-road many times and never had an issue
Mine has 248k and runs like new -I’ve had a Sierra hd with 340k and no issues
@@ELKOBRA03 my 2002 suburban z71 has 315k
Once the gas prices went up back then, a lot of owners dumped them.
crlaw75 big mistake in life.
cash for clunkers took out many of these vehicles
@@ryderdriver954 they intentionally killed the motors by pouring sand into the oil. what a waste...
I got mine cheap when the gas prices went up. Think I paid $5,500 today I can sell it for 4,500 and I had it 7 years.
2005 Suburban, 298,000mi, still rollin down the road...original motor and trans
My 03 Tahoe had 171k miles on it and they still stoled it and stripped it down to the frame. Those SUVs are still very valuable and the most reliable SUVs on the road.
2003 Tahoe with 230k miles. Still going strong 💪.
18 yr old Tohoe will be running when the 2018 Chevys are setting in the repair shop. Or worst yet the scrap yard.
2018 chevy tahoe have the same drive train 5.3 engine
@@Dannyboy-nj4wh but it’s not the same generation engine it’s totally different besides the size
@@Dannyboy-nj4wh they are not the same 5.3 at all
That’s like a 5.4 2v vrs 3v.
