- "Rhiannon" was Jimmy Iovine's pick for Haley (2nd of 3 for each contestant).
It is a single released by Fleetwood Mac in 1976. The song was written by Stevie Nicks.
"Rhiannon" was voted #488 in The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. Its U.S. chart peak was in June 1976, when it hit #11. It reached #46 in the UK singles chart after re-release in February 1978. The song is always referred to as simply "Rhiannon" on Fleetwood Mac albums. The suffixed title "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" was only used on singles in certain territories.
Live performances of the song were sometimes prefaced with Nicks saying, "This is a song about an old Welsh witch." During 1975-1980, Fleetwood Mac's live performances of "Rhiannon" took on a theatrical intensity not present on the FM-radio single. The song built to a climax in which Nicks' vocals were so impassioned that, as drummer and band co-founder Mick Fleetwood said, "her Rhiannon in those days was like an exorcism."
Nicks discovered Rhiannon through a novel called Triad, by Mary Leader. The novel is about a woman named Branwen, who is possessed by another woman named Rhiannon. There is mention of the Welsh legend of Rhiannon in the novel, but the characters in the novel bear little resemblance to their original Welsh namesakes (both Rhiannon and Branwen are major female characters in the medieval Welsh prose tales of the Mabinogi). Nicks bought the novel in an airport just before a long flight and thought the name was so pretty that she wanted to write something about a girl named Rhiannon. She wrote "Rhiannon" in 1974, three months before joining Fleetwood Mac, and has claimed it took 10 minutes to write.
American Idol Season 9 finalist Didi Benami *performed a cover of the song on the Top 8 female performances on Tuesday, March 9, 2010.

Her stage presence coupled with her voice and beauty is just unmatched by any other A.I contestant. She is amazing.
This song is possibly the best cover of Rhiannon yet! I think she did amazing! She has a husky voice sort of like Stevie's was in her Bella Donna era.

I always come back to this performance. It’s so captivating. Her voice, her movements, the wind. Absolutely breathtaking.
You have no idea how insane this was in person from the second row. The fog was thicker, you could feel the wind, and then those drums kicked in. It was like reaching the top of the first big drop on a rollercoaster or that moment when the magic of a kiss reall kicks into high gear.
At the beginning I noticed a woman in the front row waving her hand in front of her face because I think the smoke was going up her nose!
As an avid Stevie fan I approve this performance.
Me too n I usually say anyone singing Stevie committing a a felony , like to see her do Gypsy Gold Dust Woman, but then Iam a Stevie Nicks Addict....even have a FB group Stevie Nicks Addicts.

They should of dressed her more for this song. First person I can say was able to sing Stevie's song and not murder it.
Personally I thought this look was beautiful and Haley really shined. So it’s a bit more conventional glamor than what Stevie does but it was good for her.

This performance is very very underrated...the way she just slows it down and smothers it with such heartfelt emotion is breathtakingly soothing!!
I really love the sound of the crowd getting excited right around 0:51 when the wind machine kicks in. Haley you look and sound so perfect in this video... I LOVE it so much, one of the best Idol performances ever, "hands down".
It's nice to see it slowed down a bit.. hear all the true colours in her beautiful genuine voice. One of her best performances, in my opinion.

I agree with Zvivarado her voice is phenomenal not to mention such a mature stage presence totally amazing. I believed she would win but after having read that other winners have not really done much since their win. I would hate to silence this incredible set of pipes.

The following is from the Charlotte Newsobserverdotcom. “Third-place finisher Haley Reinhart showed more vocal prowess and charisma than the rest of the field combined; it was interesting that she, rather than Alaina, got the penultimate performance slot.”
Given this is ground zero for Scotty fans this is quite a compliment!

Jimmy Iovine produced Stevie NIck' first solo album, "Bella Donna", and the 1983 follow-up "Wild Heart." They lived together as a couple during that time. Jimmy Iovine served as the in-house mentor on Idol during Haley's season. He was the one who chose "Rhiannon" for Haley to perform as his Mentor's Choice ("From the minute I met you, I felt you should sing a Stevie Nicks song"). After the season ended, he signed her to Interscope.
This was the same week they flew the final three home for hometown visits. So they had less time to prepare to sing more songs, and two of the three songs they were performing were not their choice.
Haley, who was born in 1990, knows a lot of older songs (jazz, classic rock) but was apparently not that familiar with "Rhiannon." After she finished, one judge commented that she looked relieved and she joked that she was thinking, "don't forget the part about the cat."
The other songs she performed that week were Haley's choice ("What is and What Should Never Be" by Led Zeppelin) and the judges' choice ("You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette).
That said, it does not suck.
I heard Haley in a recent interview while on tour, that she loves performing and singing on stage. I don't think she gets stage fright. She was born to be on stage and sing. Such a showman. As Steven Tyler noted early on, Haley sings sexy, it is part of her. What a super star she is going to be. We cannot get enough of her. We all want more Haley.
I miss the fact that we didn't get a studio version of this...she would have just nailed a longer version, but as always she was simply beautiful on stage...voice and looks.

I wouldn’t turn her off like I do that stupid some Umbrella and Beyoncé. Record producers pick out people they can mold, they don’t care about the talent or the voice. They choose songs that they can mold a horrible voice to and make sound ok.

@seker7 I thought she was confident from the beginning. In her audition tape she perhaps was portrayed as unconfident due to the prior season - go back and watch the confidence she displays after the judges remarks. From the moment she uttered "rock on" her confidences soared with every performance. I can agree that became nothing short of awesome - The TOTAL package. Let’s hope she does not sell out and truly achieves the greatness she is capable of.

This is what the writer said: "The judges listened intently to each song and Jennifer Lopez, after Haley’s song, put her producer hat on and told Haley and the stage manager to use the fan better during the performance. She took a few minutes in fact to demonstrate and explain to Haley where she should stand (“you could turn around”) and where the fan should go (“put it here on an apple box.”)"
I am probably the only fan who didn't love this. I was a little underwhelmed. Maybe it's because that background singer was way sharp. Or maybe because this performance was short.
However, I loved the little change she did to "Rhiannon." And the wind effect was genius. She looked absolutely gorgeous. Actually, the wind machine was JLO's idea. At least she helped Haley with something!

If you listen to her comments throught this season she just is not smart enough to have an original idea or thought. But enough on JAYLOW . Thank you for visiting w us in Haley's world.

I couldn't imagine any Artist who has had Haley preform thier work (Adele, Stevy Nicks, etc) are going to be complainin' about it - since is that much more esposure for thier work (there has got to be at least a whole generation that is ignorant to THIS song's existantance)
This video is really hard for me to watch now... It just brakes my heart that Scotty didn't go home and that the two girls battle it out...That way, at very least, she would have been runner-up! Lauren's my favorite, but I really loved Haley, too.
@therese You are entitled to your opinion, of course. For me, after checking - Fleetwood Mac Rhiannon Live 1976 Stevie Nicks - I am most impressed with Haley's rendition - far better than Didi Benami or anyone else.
@dig4424 Country music in the USA has a 70% market hold over all generations of music that's why it is a country music finale American Idol really need to overhaul the voting system and take account of these kind of facts
She definitely has hat Stevie Nicks appeal. They should have not voted her off. This girl has lots of potential. Guess Idol wanted to see a country showdown instead

This was great. I heard Stevie Nicks live on TV last week.....sorry but this women needs to really retire.....she just doesn't have the sound anymore.

Hmm... I love her voice, and this song, but it didn't give her enough to do. Compared to her Janis Joplin song or "I Who Have Nothing" or "Blue" or that FANTASTIC cover of "Habits" she did post-idol... this song was just a poor choice that late in the competition.
Of course it wasn't her choice. This was also the week of the home visit plus prep for three songs. I think she just focused on remembering the words. But I'm mesmerized just watching and listening.
